February 6, 1988 - Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan won a controversial decision at 1988's NBA Slam Dunk Championship. After receiving scores of 47 or above on each of his first seven dunk attempts, runner-up Dominique Wilkins earned just 45 points for arguably one his finest dunks of the evening (two handed windmill). Jordan then earned a 50 for a dunk he'd already completed in an earlier round and missed initially in the final round. With the victory, Jordan became the first player in dunk contest history to repeat as champion.

MJ is just so graceful when he flys. I also like how back in the day, no one was assisting them with alley oops or trying jump over people. This is just old school one on one dunking

I personally believe kobe is the goat. A young kobe bryant gave jordan who was at his prime, problems. Todays basketball players are much more athletic than today. In todays time Jordan would be average.
He did win 6 i give him that. However... kobes competition was much much much more harder than jordans. Jordan played an old karl malone, old stockton, a one man army charles barkley. Kobe had shaq, BUT Jordan had pippen, rodman, and a really good bench. Even when Jordan retired that team still won 50+ games. So whats my point? Just because he won doesnt really prove anything. Unlike lebron, kobe was an alpha and won more after shaq

It is not about the difficulty of his dunks, as a matter of fact they are so common. But his aerodynamics was unarguably the reason he won it. He was so beautiful in mid-air especially when you replay it in slowmo.

Feel so privileged and lucky to have grown up watching this man M.J.. It was A dream come true following this man & his career as a fan from college @N. Carolina through the draft into pros, Olympics, every allstar weekend, these dink contests, eastern conference post season first losing hard fought battles with cavs, pistons, Knicks. getting beat physically. Mentally. And then seeing the team further mature/develope and redeem Chicago with the Championships. I'm a bit bias of course, but I'd say, from a fan standpoint, the Era, in correlation with being younger high-school age, to mid 20s by the time he retired. Being a bulls/ M.Jordan fan was,, Has to be one of the most gratifying experiences a sports fanatic, could have. A real pleasure. something I am & will, always, be...so extremely greatful to have witnessed all of it. Goodtimes thanks M.J. for the cherrised memories !! And joy of watching greatness!

Your audience was limited to the people watching the show live or on TV. The majority of people today are still racist but they do it inside the closet for fear of being chastised in social media. I watched the two previous years and the prior years as a kid. For me this ruined the Slam Dunk Contest forever. This was my "jump the shark" moment. He proved his athleticism. Made him the icon he is today. The championships was the accelerator to the top.

Just listen to him here. This is Michael freaking Jordan saying he was scared before a dunk. That’s like me saying I was scared to miss the toilet when sitting down. People just seemed more human yet more remarkable back then in the 80’s and 90’s.

Everybody who says that Dominique got robbed should consider that the guy was basically dunking only windmills ! Come on man, you gotta be more creative and do smth apart from a windmill. In this video not all of the dunks are included and if you watch the full version you will see that Jordan came up with absolutely insane dunks - that leaning dunk, Free Throw line dunks with double clutch - one with only half of a foot inside the line and the other with a foot inside, that reverse dunk from the side on which he almost rubbed his head at the rim etc. !!! Just watch and I know that you'll change your mind ! Dominique has always been dunking just windmills in all of his dunk contests and occasionally some reverse double clutches which Michael did on par if not better

Chronological rundown of Wilkins' dunks in '88: Double-pump reverse from baseline, one-handed power 360, one-handed windmill, two-handed 360, double clutch reverse from baseline - beginning on one side of rim and finishing on other, one-hand extension dunk off the backboard, windmill from baseline, two-handed windmill.
While Wilkins' closing two-hander is technically referenced as a windmill, it differs greatly from the standard one-handers for which we're accustomed. Wilkins completed two one-hand windmills, including one from the right baseline, which added a degree of difficulty with the backboard involved.
Of Wilkins' eight dunks, two were traditional windmills. By comparison, of Jordan's eight dunks, two were free throw line dunks, one of which he initially missed.

***** That's what I'm saying - Dominique dunked 3 Windmill dunks in the same dunk contest with little modifications ! Moreover, 360 one-handed and 360 two-handed were almost identical. Out of 8 dunks 3 were windmills !

    • @Swove2204

David Cheishvili Chronological rundown of Jordan's dunks in '88: Side windmill, double-pump reverse off one foot, free throw line (after one miss), side windmill, one hand floating dip reverse (after one miss), double pump reverse off two feet, two-handed double pump dunk, free throw line dunk.
While you're obviously free to disagree, I once again do not feel WIlkins' two-handed windmill has much in common with his one-handers aside from sharing the name "windmill". The two-hander requires a different movement and matter of execution. But even then, let us settle by saying Wilkins performed 2-3 windmills out of his 8 dunks in '88.
Jordan, in contrast, performed two windmills himself, along with two free throw line dunks (including a miss), and two double-pump reverses (though one came off one foot and the other two feet). If repetition is the criticism, I am uncertain Jordan emerges scathe-free.

***** Here's the chronological rundown of MJ's dunks in '88: Leaning-windmill type one hander; double clutch reverse dunk; free throw line dunk with double clutch - with only half of a foot inside the line (Pretty amazing FT line dunk among all of the FT line dunks - considering the double clutch and the distance); amazing leaning dunk from the side; that reverse dunk from the side on which he almost rubbed his head at the rim - he jumps just so fvcking high; Double-pump reverse legs spread from side; figure 8 double clutch dunk; free throw line dunk with double clutch again.
Yes, Jordan had 2 FT line dunks but Dominique had 3 Windmill dunks so....

    • @Swove2204
      @Swove2204  9 лет назад +1

David Cheishvili It appears we are in agreement. Jordan performed two windmills (the leans), two reverse dunks, and two free throw line dunks. Wilkins, in contrast, completed two one-handed windmills and an additional two-handed swing dunk (also dubbed a windmill despite the structural & visual differences).
Whether one person's dunks were awesome may be a different debate. But in terms of repetition, it seems both contestants returned to the well on numerous occasions (and who can blame them with an eight-dunk requirement to win)?
