The story of Jassi Sidhu, the beautiful, young Canadian woman who defied her family when she fell in love with and secretly married an impoverished auto-rickshaw driver in India.
Not long after, she was murdered in a roadside attack, her new husband left for dead by her killers. In the years since, four men were convicted of Jassi's murder and sent to prison in India.
Evidence gathered by Indian authorities at the time, and presented on the fifth estate, pointed to Jassi's family allegedly arranging her murder from their home here in Canada.

Care to explain why? This is an issue of the courts not the Canadian Government. The government issued the surrender order years ago for their extradition and it has been blocked by the courts.

I found it heartbreaking when her husband said he wished he would have died the day with her when she died and how hard his life now is. She seemed so beautiful in and outside. This is so sad.

The one aspect of honour killings that I have never understood is that isn't it far more dishonourable to have a murderer in your family? Or several of them? Or murderers that are still supported by the rest of the family?
I was born in this culture and it's several things but mainly social pressure and isolation.

A delay in both prosecuting them and having them extradited them to India would be not only a joke but also a spit in Jassi's face as well as to many of those who knew her well enough and cared about her. Even if the justice system in India were as corrupt, as many legal experts in Canada say it is, the mother and the uncle can still use the system to get themselves out of the slammer, like the guy, whom they paid to have Jassi murdered, did, esp. after he was tried and convicted for plotting Jassi's murder. Justice should be swift for Jassi and both the mom and the uncle should be sent to India. I don't care what happens to them. Nobody ought to be shedding tears for them, not for what they did. I don't expect judges on both sides to 'mickey-mouse' with the law. I expect these two to either rot in prison or be executed.

I've never heard of any other religion or race apart from Muslims who originate from the non western parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan, India etc who use "honour killings" to restore a families shame so this is who I was referring to because these type of killings are more common with the non western Muslims that migrate to the Western parts. Honour killings are on the rise in the UK where they do follow Sharia law behind closed doors! I live in a town where women wear the full hijab which only shows their eyes they are completely covered up from head to toe.

Imagine being killed just because you wouldn't marry someone who's 40 years older than you, on top of all of that your mother was one of the killers who planned your murder. Despite all of that Jassi's killers are walking around free! This is life people, this is the world we live in!

that 'terrorist', Omar Khadr, was just a kid, who was taken to Afghanistan, by daddy, who was supposed to provide him all the love, care and everything needed for him to do better in life, but instead, chose to have him work for his stinking terrorist organization, which cost a soldier his own life, emotional trauma on his family (his wife had to raise her children on her own) and traumatized another soldier.
He should have known better back then. He could have stood up to daddy and said no, but was not mentally equipped to do such a thing.
I understand that sounds a bit corny, esp. now that he's back in Canada, where he's on bail, and now compensated, which upsets you, but young people, esp. children, are not fully equipped to understand what goes on around them. I think the only thing he could have known better was that his family were not really good people, due to their dislike of western cultural influences and the father's alliances with Osama bin Laden; he could have had intervention from both the U.S. and Canada, so that he would have been referred to social services throughout Canada (and live with a loving, caring and responsible Canadian family), so he can go to school, get a decent education, get a degree, become whatever he might have hoped on becoming. Had that happened, Christopher Speer would have not been dead and Layne Morris would have not been as severely wounded as he is now (and there also would have been no divided opinions about Khadr, like many people in both Canada and the U.S. see him). Sadly, however, it is just impossible to re-write that chapter, whether we think of him as a terrorist or a 'child soldier'.
He's not like Willie Bosket, Jr., a New York teenager and habitual offender, who shot 2 passengers on a subway train in the late 1970s (and got only 5 years for that offense), before reoffending again, which not only got him additional time for assault, but also attempted murder on jail guards, prison staff, as well as stabbing an inmate. This led him to being incarcerated for good. Unlike Khadr, Bosket bragged about being a criminal, like his father, and guess what, he ends up getting his face in the news and he seems to enjoy it.
Nor is Khadr like Yaser Said. He killed his two daughters, Sara and Amina, in 2008, in a parking lot in Dallas, Texas, because they were dating American boys. He is still on the loose. He could be anywhere. Yaser is now on the FBI's Most Wanted List. He has abused his daughters before as well as his wife, who is American, and harassed other family members and relatives on his wife's side. We can't liken someone whom was dumped in the middle of nowhere by his father and whom some people later brand a 'terrorist', to a person who is not only considered dangerous, but also could be walking the streets.
These parents (well, the mother and the uncle, actually) are much worse. They evaded the law for a decade before they could even be caught - and still no extradition has been made. A spit in the face for Jassi and many Justice For Jassi advocates. Including people like myself. I am just downright mad.
Both claim that she married the 'wrong guy'. Jassi was in love with this man, even though he was of lower status. He could have been able to come to Canada and become anything, like a cab driver, or a chauffeur. Had she been alive, she would be having children with Mithu, living in Canada, or India, or wherever. She was hoping to live what many would call a Canadian success story. However, it was cut short, because what they committed was an 'honor killing'. It has no religion. It has no culture. It has no place in life. It is meaningless.
The family who took Jassi's life seemed to think otherwise as well as other relatives in their own family. Plus, they are not interested in locating the men they hired to kill Jassi. The mastermind who killed her was already convicted of murdering her in India, but how could he have made it to Canada? Why would people in Jassi's family say he is India? That is something that really ought to shock us the most.
So, I'd say, the government of Canada has been remiss since before 9/11, 9/11 itself and onwards. Ours here in the US just needs to be more aware of such matters in case they are notified of such instances, like honor crimes, domestic violence, abuse to terrorism. Sadly, we in the US now have a leader who just does not care one single bit about such things.
Oh I am sure they will. There were (and have been) some of the most sadistic criminals who even got away with crimes, like murder or rape, even though we know there could have been enough to indicate they had planned it further in advance. For example, OJ Simpson, Yaser Abdel Said, Willie Bosket Jr., Casey Anthony, George Zimmerman, Brock Turner, William Bradford Bishop, Joran van der Sloot, you name it. Some of these people could either be walking free, or still on the loose. You never know.

No. I am talking about people who can not only commit such crimes and sometimes get away with it for years before being caught. They fit in the same category as Jassi's mom and uncle, given how they both planned and paid the killing of Jassi herself and let it go cold for years before they let the guy who did it come into Canada. This is such incompetence. And authorities did nothing, I tell you, nothing.
Her case isn't the only one that's stands out as gross incompetence or miscarriage of justice. Those ones I've mentioned to you, which may be too much for you to read, are just the examples where people either commit crimes and get away with them forever, or commit them and get caught after a certain time, but get off pretty easily, in some circumstances - and jaws will drop right away. Would you want some of these people living next to you? I know I won't.

This happened near my neighborhood. It is heartbreaking, to this day. I think of her from time to time and I still cannot imagine even thinking like that about my child for choosing love. Rest in peace Jassi.

Event Narration:
June 9, 2000: Jaswinder Sindhu(Jassi) murdered.
January 6, 2012: After a decade-long investigation, Jassi's mother and uncle were arrested by the RCMP.
May 9, 2014: the Supreme Court of British Columbia ordered her mother and uncle to be extradited to India to face charges relating to the case.
September 24, 2017: A team of 3 men from Indian authorities arrive in Canada to complete the extradition process and take the accused home.
The extradition is challenged by the lawyers of accused by petitioning for a judicial review of case. The court stays the extradition.
October 4, 2017: The team of Indian police return home empty handed and accuse the canadian police to purposely exploiting legal loopholes by blindsiding them. The clever trap is as follows.
"The Punjab Police have claimed that Canadian authorities goofed-up with and did not follow the procedure laid down for the extradition in the Supreme Court order. The department claims that one of the conditions in the extradition order was that before taking the accused out of the country, the Canadian authorities had to inform the lawyer of the accused."

This is really sad, that no one has been arrested in her hometown. Also, she was 25 yrs. old, a grown woman when she married her husband, yet treated like a child when she returned to Maplewood! It woulden't have hurt anyone to let her live with her husband and have a happy life. 11 yrs should have been more than enough time, to investigate this matter, and make all those responsible pay for their actions!

i remember a young white american woman about 5 years ago who married a rickshaw driver in jaipur, india. both families accepted the marriage and the rickshaw driver moved to america to start a new life with his white american wife. the last 5 years they are still together and happy. so our there families.

I vaguely remember the case of a Saudi princess who secretly married the man she loved and they escaped to the USA. Her family tracked her down and killed them both there. We had a case in NZ where a Hindu man set his wife on fire and burned her alive in front of their 3 year old son. He was caught within a few days. And another Hindu who killed his wife and 2 year old daughter. He got caught as well. However domestic violence is rife generally in NZ and women are killed often - children too. One white guy also set his wife on fire and killed her. They don't call it "honour killing" but thats basically what it is - when a narcisstic psychopath can't control his partner or she tries to leave him, his "honour", or "ego" is wounded and they will take revenge.
