      @gavincole9733 6 лет назад +24

That may be true. But the real question is what does proper treatment look like? If a psychiatrist can’t get near her because she out of control. If you have to pin her down to accept medication and she can’t safely be around other people what is the answer. Ultimately you are left with the same result. Isolation and restraint of an individual that is a harm to herself and others. If you’re going to blame the correctional officers then you need to suggest a safe alternative. What do you do if reasoning and negotiation go out the window?

    • @BS-dq1kz
      @BS-dq1kz 5 лет назад +5

Gavin Cole I agree with both of you. There was definitely a need for mental health and behavioral issues but she was out of control. These correctional officers are not to blame really. They only do what they've been taught to do. What they are equipped to handle. If her own mother and father couldn't handle her or anyone else then how can we place blame on the officers? The girl was strangling herself repeatedly! Constantly! If my child was doing that, I'd get them some mental help and I'd tie them down too in a heartbeat if it persisted. She had some emotional issues for sure.
Something does need to change though. I just don't know what and obviously others don't know either or I'd say they would be doing that instead. However, again, the officers aren't to blame. Some correctional officers are jerks but in this situation, what else could they have personally done for this particular girls who was out of control? Maybe they could've been kinder? I don't know. I just know this story saddens me but we have to place blame where it goes and that isn't on people who are just doing their jobs.

@@gavincole9733 appears to me that she never had a chance to leave isolation that started the day she arrived. There wasn't psychiatric treatment until long after she had been in isolation. I think the isolation alone would give the most stable adult mental health problems. She was a teen with 2 minor offenses when incarcerated. I can't see how this inhumane treatment was even allowed in today's society. It's barbaric!!! The system escalated the problems and created her downward spiral. And to just stand there while she died!!! No one deserves to be treated like this. So unreal and mindboggling that this is truly happening and she wasn't the only one receiving this treatment. And it sounded like it was still being used. If you think being locked down at home during the current covid-19 crisis was hard, it's heaven compared to the treatment of a teenage child who didn't even live long enough for her brain to finish developing. You know, the frontal cortex that allows us to make rational decisions, it can take until 25 years of age to be fully functional, true for every human.

This kid arrived to her adoptive parents at 5 days old. Mental health issues are impacted by social support available. Everyone who encountered that infant up until she was taken away (in her teens) for anti social/hostile/degenerate, criminal behavior should be scrutinized and held just as accountable as the prison system that was forced to deal with the mess that kid was when she entered their system. These problems for significant and severe way before she ended up being a ward of the government the lack of mental health the lack of research as to why she was so psychotic (pretty obvious that there is a huge chance that she was abused by one or multiple people for an extended period of time).
I don't know how I always end up seeing videos of adoptive kids who are failed, tortured, abused but I seriously have a fear of giving up a child for adoption. Aborting first term would probably be less painful than what this girl went through before she finally ended her life.

These people had a few things with them in their 'pod' to keep them occupied, and STILL quickly started to display concerning declining mental health signs. They knew they were safe and could quit at any time and it was still overwhelming for them. I feel very sorry for this young girl, she needed mental health support and rehabilitation, not solitary confinement for all those years.

My nephew died in a jail cell alone he was only 18 years old. He's how it happened. His family grew concerned about him. He suffers from mental illness his mom's side of the family have alot of the family members that suffer from this illness. So his dad and his sister took him to the hospital get him evaluated to get him into the mental hospital. So the whole day was for them to tell the family they would need them to take him to the crisis response center to get him help. Well when they took him it's getting harder into the day. They started to ask questions. Well they told them the truth that he did have a warrant for traffic violations. So they called for the cops to take him to jail. To the crisis response center it was easier then doing there job to get him into a mental hospital. Well there's video that shows how they treated my nephew. They stripped him naked and then put the suicide best thing on him. Then they threw him into a padded sell for suicide watch. Well after only 8 days they found him dead. But they thought he had finally went to sleep becouse in those 8 days he didn't eat or drink any thing or sleep in the whole 8 days ge was there. When he was going though the manic episodes. He couldn't do anything for himself whats so ever. But they found him in his own urine and crap on him. They knew he was mentally ill and they didn't help him in anyway. They basically killed him. When they did the autopsy they found out he had lost 40 pound becouse they weighted him when he was put into jail. The messed up part no one got in trouble for his death. Like I said you can look up this case. My nephew came is Marc Anthony Moreno this happened on March 11, 2016 im Washington state in Benton county. This has news videos and more details about everything. But if you or I would had left him to die, we would be charged for murder and in Marc case no one has been held accountable for his death. I'm still so angry over his death. I feel everyone that was involved with running the jail That was supposed to be watching my nephew suffer should have to pay for his. And they should be put in jail for what they've done to my nephew. I feel so sad that this young girl went though the horrific situation. Jails need to change how there able to treat people like animals and get away with how cruel they treat inmates. Yes they have done something to be put in jail but that shouldn't give the guards the right to treat them like animals in the pound. They are humans and animals shouldn't be treated cruel either. Just wanted to make that clear to. RIP this young girl and Marc. They suffered horrible deaths but now they are free to fly and be happy in a better place. God bless everyone.

They were concerned parents.. she never got a full assessment for mental health or diagnosis. Regardless of her behaviors she has rights and those facilities had a responsibility for her health and life.. They failed her and trapped her in a cell. Your comment is stupid.

It's aggravating on both sides. Guards have to deal with this kid doing stupid stuff to herself, on purpose, and she has to deal with the mistreatment from them. It's an endless cycle that neither side wanted to quit. Pitiful no one was brave enough to stop before Ashley stopped it permanently.
      P.S. This isn't a stupid comment.

She was treated worst then an animal. There should have placed her in a mental health hospital, seems to me as time went on her mental state was something they shrugged off, she was so young 3 formative years as a teenager spent in a cage. only to end in her death, those who were fired should have been arrested for man slaughter, they are all responsible for her death. oh and love the question your job or her life? There was a hesitation! wHO CARES a job is replaceable a life is not. This is the most disgusting display of control by the legal system i have seen. A pychiatric hospital could have delt with these issues medicine therapy people showing her care a soft bed clean clothes healthy food so much could have been done for her.

totally 100% agree. though ultimately she in the system, she was a minor child which made her more visable & the parents raising flag, blowing whistle, calling every news network around i Truly believe this child be alive today. her mother came across as very detached and cold as she only blames others for the same though she did. nothing but let her die. Well good to know your ok now. Her mom didnot put her there it was jail for a minor crime but because of her issues she remained there for years. Somebody should have had her on medication and in a pych hospital. No jail is equipped to handle the mental problems she had. Maybe the mother did her best who knows, i am thinking that she could have tried harder though and seemed a bit cold and detached.

She needed a comprehensive physical evaluation:
    - genetic testing: shows nutritional weak areas where the body needs supportive supplementation (ie: B vitamins and magnesium for the brain)
    - organic acids testing: to assess toxicities due to heavy metals, molds, candida (all these can cause inflammation in the brain, which obviously won't allow it to function optimally)
    - detailed blood testing (assessing nutritional aspects - deficiencies and imbalances)
After nutritional/hormonal/neurotransmitter testing helps achieve homeostasis within the body, only then can a patient begin to participate fully in counseling. It doesn't mean you can begin counseling sooner (with more mundain strategies), but too much change at once is indeed stressful, which can create/add to brain inflammation.
Anyway. Just pointing out that there **are** strategies to help someone, but not all practitioners are trained in these (functional medicine) strategies.

I think it was a situation that was not dealt with before and the system didnt know what to do with her or how to handle someone like this.
Go in and be attacked. Dont go in and risk her death.
If you blame the person who gave the order not to go in unless she stops breathing you have to ask about the problems it would have caused them with the amount of trouble they received for having too many discipline orders.
At the end of the day it was Ashley that tied the knot around her own neck not anyone else.
They had tried a lot of things to deal with her and would have stopped many many suicide attempts by her. This one they didnt.
Perhaps she should have been in a mental health setting but that not the prisons fault.
They were handed her and had to deal with her in the prison setting that they had.

You're missing the point. No one is blaming the institution for not being able to "fix" or handle her. Even professional mental health experts can't help someone who refuses to be helped but Ashley was NEVER GIVEN THE OPPOURTUNITY TO GET ADEQUATE HELP. This wasn't a case of a few management staff mistakes or lack of ability of staff. All they had to do was make sure she was getting help - keeping up with psychologist, making sure she was being throughly assessed, creating management plan based off assessment and so on.. How did they allow a psychologist to not asses her let alone not diagnose her? Instead they did the bare minimum by providing a psychologist see her everyday and left it at that. Institutional management teams are not stupid, they will create a thorough intensive plan when it comes to behavioural management, release concerns, and risk assessment yet couldn't collaborate with mental health workers to create an action plan.
"They had tried a lot of things to deal with her " .. Did we watch the same video? No they didn't try "lots of things" they used one strategy in forms of different tactics: the rack, segregation, taser, pepper spray and finally neglect (once they noticed their use of force statistic report was higher than they wanted exposed to the public). AND did you not see how they manipulated policies to their advantage - prolonging mandatory assessment by shipping her off to different institutional SEG in which the 60 days of confinement was renewed? Did you see all of that? Did you see the shift in the behaviour of CSC and Ministry after she died ? If CSC or experts THEY hire are not capable of handling her why does the they pride themselves in providing mental health care to the public but once she died it's all " no comment" and pointing fingers elsewhere.
LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY= CONFIDENCE OF CSC TO CREATE A BREEDING GROUND FOR CORRUPT STAFF MEMBER AND HIGHER- UPS...... Im sorry for the rant but you should be more sorry for your ignorance.

Agreed. Some people have suggested Ashley was Mentally Ill (Psychiatrically Ill) but the problems with Ashley started at home long before detention for throwing apples at the Postman.
The Focus of this investigation should have been concentrated upon her environment at home, when she began to change her moods and her, "Cry for Help" became apparent.
When a child changes her behavious suddenly at home, the authorities start their investigatoions with those with whom she is living. I am not making accusations but I would like "The Fith Estate" to explain which adults were investigated for suspected abuse of Ashley, long before she became a deliquent, by throwing the apples at the Postman..
I understand her father pays a visit to Ashley's graveside every day... Ummmmm, strange behaviour of a father wracked with guilt or simply a caring father? Maybe we'll never know.

Tragic circumstances around Ashley Smith's life and death. I know that the media and Ms. Ashley's mother portrayed prison staff as heartless. But, this individual was extremely violent with total diregard for herself and others. As quoted from Wikipedia "Behaviour that Smith exhibited included many attempts at choking herself into unconsciousness; guards responding were often attacked by Smith, sometimes with weapons she had manufactured and concealed.[2]" She was often kept in solitary confinement because of her behaviour. Why should prison staff risk repeated injury or even death because of this dangerous narcissistic person? If someone responds that it is part of their job- no, it's not! Nobody should be assaulted, injured or abused in their job. As for a facility that could treat Ms. Smith she was moved to more than 10 facilities with no change in her behaviour. Prolonged isolation and physical and chemical restraint seem to be the only tools at facility staff's disposal. I know many will cry out that this was a violation of her human rights while little regard is paid to the rights of numerous employees injured while caring for this person and possibly suffering PTSD. I would suggest that many of those wringing their hands over this tragedy seek employment as guards who have daily contact with such clients as Ms. Smith. Hopefully, they will have more enlightened ideas on how to handle them.

I feel the same. I posted this above because this one just didn't seem right after watching the girl she met to begin with and then after all of her recorded incidents: As I watched this I wondered why she kept getting items to strangle herself. I understand it's not right to leave a person unclothed - I certainly wouldn't want that either but there's no way I would want to risk this. Also, the other girl in the beginning stated that Ashley like to push their buttons... I'm in no way saying that anyone should lose their life at 19 this way, but I feel that if it was a true mental issue someone should have pushed A LOT harder. There are plenty of punk kids just pushing their luck. Please know I'm not saying that was what she was doing! But there are plenty of them out there

Liberal hand-wringing glosses over or avoids a few things. The mad or bad dichotomy is not approached. This young woman saw a psychologist every day. That does not strike me as neglecting her mental health. Perhaps I missed it, but we did not hear anything from the mental health professional that was seeing her. She was also given an advocate, who may have recommended psychiatric intervention, but we only have her word for it and she was not qualified to make a recommendation. It does establish, however, that Ashley had at least two people a day who were focused on her support. She did not have to choke herself to get human company. This young woman also behaves in a way consistent with reason -self-interested reason- she wants attention, so she does whatever is necessary to get it. I understand that someone with a real mental health issue would be far more erratic, delusional and oblivious to self-interest. I see nothing here that even hints at that. Ashley simply behaves badly. When the authorities try to be humane, like issuing her with a television set, she tears it apart and uses the shards of glass to attack the guards.
Another point is that this woman came from an articulate middle - class family. This would have equipped her with the skills necessary to comply with the system and win her release. The amount of man-power her behaviour was eating up, plus the danger to the guards, must have meant they would have been pleased to see her leave. She didn't get out simply because her behaviour was so consistently violent, arrogant and disorderly in the extreme.
We do not want to consider the possibility of "bad" so titles are made up to try to avoid the philosophical landslide that such a word would cause. Someone behaving now "suffers" from Serial Killer Compulsion Disorder or Child Rape Ideation Syndrome. Forgive what may appear flippant. I do not for a minute disregard the serious nature of the above. My invention serves only to illustrate the point: these violent, disorderly people do not "suffer" from an illness, which is why they cannot be treated. They cause suffering to other people by the free expression of their deviance.
I must finally express my sympathy with the prison guards struggling to deal with such an obnoxious and aggressive person. At this point in history we do not understand the mechanism in the human constitution that causes such behaviour, but we do ourselves no favours by excessive sympathy for that which is bad and making those struggling to deal with it -or even the victims of it- the ones where we center all responsibility.

Isolation has been proven to worsen or cause mental health issues. Take a look at kids in China and Romania who have been left in orphanages. They were born healthy children and end up with mental disabilities or mental illness. So keeping this girl in isolation for over three years obviously was making her worse. She needed help. Not to be left in a cell everyday with only negative interaction from the guards

They made her sicker and sicker and now she is dead. Those in need of help the most are left to the wolves, not the guards and the wardens. She was a child having her character and brain shaped by confinement and cruelty, no wonder she just did whatever she could for attention, that's the closest thing to love that she knew. Poor Ashley, they wrote on your blank slate and they wrote with hate. Hope you are at peace now and hope your story will help others in a similiar position.

This is a tricky one. You want them rehabilitated without making them feel like they are being rewarded. Also, you want them punished to give them a clear message without overdoing it. I think they were just fed up and, as it is always the case, resources/staff numbers were limited and a lot was invested in her on a daily basis. So they did what they did maybe? The guards were scapegoats though. Go in, you are fired. Do not go in you are fired. And where she faked it so many times and apparently tried to attack them, no one believed her any more. Tragic.

There was no punishment needed in her case, she was a struggling child with mental health issues who was guilty of throwing crabapples. What she needed was inpatient mental health support.

It doesn't work that way, but Ashley was in prison much longer than her sentence! How did those guards justify such violent behaviour towards a girl? How could they still sleep at night? How could the person who ordered the guards to not do anything anymore, no matter what she did, still sleep? That hasn't happened even to the worst criminal.

This case is a failure of the Canadian system. My condolences to a fellow young woman. Officers need training in phsycology and compassion. There are too many abuse incidents that correlate with lack of understanding/ignorance on the part of police and correctional officers. Militirized training only provides a narrow set of abilities which is actually kill someone. A little bit shocking we still havent evolved to a modern and humain way of treating mental illness. This case sadens me and it is a reminder that our country is only as good as it treats it's sick or disabled people and Canada clearly has a way to go. Thank you CBC these stories inspire me to fight for our human rights and to demand the quality of care Canada advertises to make sure it fabricates in reality.

I would've sued.. but then again..from the beginning the mom should've taken Ashley to a therapist then none of this would've happened.. why didn't the mom or dad visit Ashley? Thy just didn't want nothing more to do with her cuz she was out of control so thy locked her up and didn't look back..also if Ashley was out of control..the parents should've controlled her when she was younger..thy didn't provide proper parenting
    RIP Ashley

When a prisoner is in segregation they don't get visits and make store. That's here in Louisiana I'm sure most prisons are the same. Visitation is a privilege and if u getting written up as much as she did her parents wouldn't be able to.

If her parents noticed "unfit mental behaviour" they should have taken her to the psychiatric ward of a hospital where she could be examined by a team of professionals and receive medication. It's sad to say, but jail is jail and guards don't care about whether you're guilty, innocent, sane, insane ect. Their job is to react to an inmate's behaviour. It's sad but the jail should have done more to ensure her mental wellbeing, but it must have been difficult when the perpetrator or a crime must face the concequences but also needs additional assistance.

It's obvious that she brought all this punishment on herself. All she had to do was follow simple directions and she chose not to. She could have been out of there in a month, one month if she had sucked it it up and behaved. I have no pity for her, she was an incorrigible human being and you can't tell me that she was incapable of behaving herself on any level, you have to take responsibility for your actions, we all do things every day that we don't want to and I don't feel she was mentally ill. All she had to do was stop and I am truly sorry that she never figured that out.

When i was a teen, i was placed in a treatment facility housing kids from ages 4-17. The staff were not trained, they didnt want to be there, college kids just getting easy pay. This was a place that was suppose to provide kids with agriculture therapy and ourdoor therapy. Beautiful property, youd think this would be ideal for any disturbed patient. But no. Theyd lock us in our rooms and not allow us to go outside. My first week there I always wondered why kids wouldnt comply. But you literaly go crazy! When there is nothing but you and your mind locked in a room, bored to death, not a good mix. Only thing to do is to fight. This is not ok. I understand there is lack of funding and staff but wtf. Sexual predators, child abusers, molesters, rapist do not get treated like this!!! Not fair. I hate our system.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a DSM sited mental illness. The fact that what we are seeing here are the tapped interactions makes it appear there is some level of accountability... but a lack of therapeutic talent on the part of the institution. Unfortunately, these people don't really have a tool box for dealing with an issue they've seen a hundred time and that's the real crime. A metal cell is no place to put a child who suffers from an obvious chemical imbalance and requires interpersonal support. It's a pity for everyone involved.

You're mostly right. Let's assume that someone with a conscious and a love for kids is being instructed by management that THIS is the way they need to deal with THIS behavior. They're being trained in a way that goes against their instinct.....and that would be to handle it differently. Don't get me wrong, I know that some hard a^^ sadists love to work in a place where they can oppress and punish, but the fact the whole interaction was on video makes me think there's a "cover you a^^" issue at this place and management might be trying to dodge some heat....unknowingly drawing more of it. Pity....but for the stupidity.

She should have gone to a treatment center for troubled children.
So in Canada you can be tried twice for the same crime, even if it's not murder?
After she turned 18 she should have been released. Then as an adult if she messed up again, go back in to the system.
If you treat people horribly they will take that in, and who knows how they will react.
This is not the right way, I don't know the right way but this isn't it.

I'm totally disgusted in the way they did this young women. Instead of the "special treatment" of ignoring the choking, how about they realized she needed one on one real help, love, and care by professionals. She was different but not alone in her self destructive behavior. If you constantly treat someone as though they are nothing what is their reaction expected to be? I realize no one is perfect not the staff or Ashley. But I pray that you folks are looking at other measures for ppl like this in the future. She won't be the last to have problems.
