  • @papalazzzaru

    The video mentions that cymbals should never touch metal; however, this is exactly what is happening when a top hi-hat is held in a normal clutch assembly. Over time this can cause wear on the hole in the top hi-hat, potentially changing its sound. My personal preference is to fit a piece of rubber tubing over the screw thread so that it finishes above where the bottom nut will sit when full tight, so that the upper hi-hat is protected from contact with metal in the same way that a normal cymbal would be.

    • @emrahercancakir
      @emrahercancakir 2 года назад +2

      I was wondering the same thing. Seems like a problem that should have a manufacturer's solution already. Would you mind sharing what kind/size of rubber tubing you use? Any additional instructions you can provide would be appreciated.

    • @papalazzzaru
      @papalazzzaru 2 года назад +2

      @@emrahercancakir To be honest I really don't remember the detail, I bought my current kit back in 2007 so I've only done it once since then, and I don't remember where I got the tube from, the only thing I really remember is that it was tight enough that I had to essentially screw it on, and it's still there now. I guess you can experiment, even a cut-down plastic cymbal holder might do the job.

    • @emrahercancakir
      @emrahercancakir 2 года назад

      @@papalazzzaru Thank you for the quick response, especially 8 years after your original post :) I did try a cymbal sleeve but the inner diameter was too small. My best option for today was to use a shrink tube. The installation worked great and there does not seem to be any adverse effect on the tone. Thanks again!

    I've been playing guitar for over 20 years now and decided to learn the drums because it always looked like so much fun and I thought it'd be pretty cool to be able to record my own drum tracks. I missed the feeling of doing something for a while which you think was correct then having someone who knows their stuff show you how you can do it better and it completely changes everything. Like a revelation. It could be the smallest detail that makes the world of difference. This video absolutely did that for me. Thanks so much for posting.

    not a critique of your lesson, just something that has always made me mad. you even stated no 'metal on metal' but all clutches are metal so when cymbal moves, it slowly maybe very slowly creates cracking or keyholing of expensive cymbals by rocking against the clutch threads.. that clutch is actually one of the worse ones. it has threads all the way with no smooth spot. fyi to everyone, i use multiple layers of electrical tape over the spot where top cymbal sits on clutch. replace tape every so often.

    • @svenmuller7283
      @svenmuller7283 5 лет назад +1

      Man, my thoughts exactly. Another thing that made me mad in my early days was the lower screw falling down while playing, leaving the upper cymbal down. One day I took one of the upper screws and put it under the top hat to counter the normal screw there. To me it makes way more sense like that and I use this method for more than 20 years now. Good thing is that you can easily adjust the tension of the top cymbal one-handed by just turning the remaining upper screw.

    I used to configure my clutch just like this. I hit my hats hard. After years of the bottom nut back-spinning and coming loose, which frees the top hat from the clutch completely, I took one of the thinner locking nuts and moved it to the bottom- problem solved. Finger tight is enough and you’ll still need pliers to break it loose.
    Also- experiment a bit with the tension between the pads on the top cymbal: tighter grip=tighter sound, looser grip=looser sound.
    There’s also the angle adjustment screw beneath the washer. It’ll angle the bottom hat so that when you clap them it’ll eliminate the air dam which will deaden the clap.
    You can also play with the direction of that angle up- towards you or away, as well as the depth of the angle.
    There’s a lot to setting them up, but it’s all really simple. Experiment with it and you’ll find that sweet spot you’re looking for

    how about metal to metal contact of top hi-hat cymbal with the clutch metal in between the small felts?

    • @janzuidhof9646
      @janzuidhof9646 3 года назад

      I have a virtually identical clutch on my Sonor kit. Difference is there is a section in the middle of the threaded shaft that has no thread. The bottom knurled nut will travel to the limit of the lower thread. Above that sits the lower felt, then top cymbal, upper felt, the two counter locking thin knurled nuts and the clutch lock. I find it strange that there is a plastic sleeve to protect the lower cymbal but the top cymbal is subjected to metal contact, especially if you set the top cymbal loosely. I have actually wrapped insulating tape on the cymbal contact area to protect the top cymbal but it needs frequent replacing

    I recently came across a Hammer series pair of hi-hats which are a medium-thin and a thin that are not marked top/bottom and it was impossible without having been able to put them on a scale to know which was which and at the time I did not have such a privilege to weigh them. It was a fast setup and time was of the essence.
    Your question of me with no doubt me well aren't they Mark medium thin and thin No in fact that we're not marking in any way other than an identical stamp on the inside of each Bell. There was no quick reliable way to tell which one was which so of course they were installed wrong at the last possible second.

    Not so great of a video- you are confusing when you said metal should never touch the cymbal. You emphasized this point by repeating it but yet you fail to mention that the top high hat DOES in fact make direct contact with the threaded shaft. That is a very important point you didn't cover which contradicts what you are saying. I saw one person below in the comments say that they covered the threaded shaft with a rubber tubing- which is a good idea.

      The top cymbal does not touch metal in a well-designed clutch. My Gretsch clutch has a plastic sleeve that covers the moving shaft -- and the cymbal is isolated from the nuts -- top and bottom -- by felt doughnuts. Neither cymbal ever touches any metal (except, of course, the other cymbal when they are played together).

    Mhhhhhh, not metal on metal? YES, that's right. But your stupid explorer doesn't took a tape (gaffer-tape, a rubber or someting similar) between the top-cymbal and the clutch (screw). So, when using the hit-hat, you scratch the top-cymbal when playing like using a rough file!... Every time when you give pressure in the clutch, it's like rasp or rubbing the hole of the cymbal-bell in an ugly way. Problem is: the damage of the TOP-cymbal, when really working with them. Make a new clip, than you help drummers. Believe me, I play drums over 45 years. And thanks to my colleague, who recognized the same in your clip, 8 years ago: Have a look at the comment from @papalazzzaru below.
    Make a new video, if you really like to help people.

    A joke , the guy says when connecting cymbals to a stand they should not touch metal that's why there's a plastic protection.
    NEVER LET A CYMBAL TOUCH METAL TO METAL ........But then he attached the top cymbal hi hat to a metal clutch with a thread on it so the top hi hat cymbal is touching and rubbing and whatever else on metal clutch......

    That explainment isn't too right.The two rings up to the second felt isn't for nothing!!The right combination of clutch is : the two rings upside the felts is used for holding the felts with the top hihat inside of them , first screw the 1st ring with his short part upside,then the 1st felt , then the cymbal , then the 2nd felt , then the 2nd ring with his short part downside and finally the tighten nut.This combination used for to securelly the nut with the help of 2nd ring to give to the top cymbal an absorbtion air to move when it hited to avoid the short destroy of it.That is the right explainment!!

    It's a decent start, but it doesn't address the fundamental problem: the bottom and top cymbals both go up and down when I hit the pedal. We only want the top cymbal to move. This method makes both cymbals move at the same time; they don't open & close.

    Great video but it really didn’t need to be so slow and long. You could’ve just showed the last 20 seconds of assembly

      Javi garcia serrano , yes but what about the upper one at 2.45 ? still metal to metal,the felt doesn't keep them from moving,especially when playing loud ,and my question was about the clutch,not about the bottom cup
