Smokey is one of the best singers ever to live. "I Second That Emotion", "Tears of a Clown" and "Tracks of My Tears" are three near perfect singles.
One of the best songwriters ever, as well. Smokey WAS Motown, as much as Barry Gordy was.
Oh “Second that emotion” - I forgot about that song, it’s sooo good!
Great picks.
Near perfect?
Bob Dylan called Smokey a poet. High compliment from the best songwriter on the planet!
You still have the best Smokey & the Miracles soing left to discover: Tears of a Clown.
Yep🤘
"You've Really Got a Hold On Me" is my favorite Smokey song. I'm sure it's others' too. Smokey is one of the biggest class acts of all time. You'll never find anyone with a bad thing to say about the man. In the 80s, there was a band called ABC who did a great song called "When Smokey Sings". You may want to put that on your list.
Gotta do you really got a hold on me.Amber you will melt.
Then, hearing The Beatles cover "You've Really Got a Hold On Me" just showed the influence that ones like Smokey had on Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
Love When Smokey Sings!
It’s my favorite song, period. The Beatles did a good cover of it, too.
You know you're absolutely right,, I never heard nothing bad or controversial about Smokey Robinson and I'm in my 60s so I knew his whole career..👍🏽✌🏽
Claudette Rogers is one of the background singers on "Shop Around," and she was also an original member of the Miracles. She later married Smokey Robinson. This song was the first million seller hit for both Motown and for the Miracles.
And Claudette is also the sister of group member Bobby Rodgers. (She and Smokey were already married by this time.)
@@Greyareas27 Claudette sang lead on one of their songs "Father Dear".
@@beachbumsailordude Really? Gotta check that out.
@@Greyareas27 she was Bobby’s cousin, not sister.
Claudette was not a background singer. She was a full member of The Miracles.
Smokey is one of the all time greatest in my opinion! "Tears of a clown", "I second that emotion", "The tracks of my tears", "Being with you", "Cruising". You will love them all.
Yes to all...
Great suggestions!
Cruising is my favorite Smokey song followed by I Second That Emotion.
Is Amber fangirling??? So cute. That's his natural voice which has held up even til today. This is good. Going to a Go Go is better. Now I must play my Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Anthology.
Yes, more Smokey! Ooo Baby, Baby or Crusin' or anything else by Smokey would be great. Your talking about Smokey having a naturally high voice reminded me of another singer like that Wayne Newton-Danke Schoen. He tells of a funny story about calling his wife long distance and the operator thought he was a woman.
Smokey's opus work is the song "Cruisin' " which came out in 1979. You guys MUST do that one...
It's so great!
Smokey’s voice is so glorious that people forget he is a genius level songwriter who had hits for decades. Smokey can not receive enough accolades.
What Smokey was doing that you’re referring to, is called “head voice.” It’s done with the false chords (falsetto) but with breath support and a bit of chest register mixed in, then just add a bit of volume and pressure for compression.
It’s used a lot in Pop Music and all kinds of forms of Rock, Blues, including Rock/Glam Rock, and Metal.
The falsetto of these early artists, actually inspired Barry Gibb in his singing. I also love and miss the choreography of the older artists. My friends growing up were so in awe and spent many, many hours in our basement, trying to re-create their moves, lol.
w
Smokey does not use a falsetto. That is his natural tenor.
Surprising
My friends and I also.
If you want to hear how good Smokey *still* is, check him out on Darryl's House (Darryl Hall of Hall & Oates fame) singing "Ooo Baby Baby". He can still sing very high and beautiful even in his 80s!
I saw that episode of LADH when it was first aired
Darryl is a big fan of Smokey and his music.
Here is just a segment from it

Amber FYI in your Dad's defense, Johnnie Walker Scotch Whiskey is a premium brand sold in the States and in Europe. Johnnie Walker has different levels of whiskies, each identified by a different colour and each with a different price-tag. In order of least to most expensive, these are Johnnie Walker Red, Black, Double Black, Gold, Green, Platinum, and Blue. In terms of quality, the best Johnnie Walker label is Blue. Johnnie Walker Blue is the most coveted of the brand's line of blended whiskies. However, Johnnie Walker Red is a best-seller and has won many awards.
That being said, if there is a whisky that can be justifiably described as being smooth, Johnnie Walker Blue Label is it. ... It is very good and probably worthy of being considered an exceptionally good whisky, especially amongst whiskies in continuous production and so widely available. So according to Red label vs Blue your Dad might have been saying you might not be the highest end of a Premium brand, (in your family) but your the most Popular... The GOAT of the brand (family).
Definitely not cheap!
I was going to say the same. You sir are a man of culture!
I was wondering - never thought of that as cheap. Now, Mad Dog 2020…
@@brynneholt1990 She’s lucky her dad didn’t call her Thunderbird, Wild Irish Rose, Cisco, or my favorite, Ripple!
What About Johnnie Walker Swing???
My favorite from Smokey will always be “Cruisin’.” So freaking smooth. And yes, that’s from much later, and his voice, if anything, is even better.
Listen to ooh baby baby
Smokey Robinson is timeless. He has performed in Vegas for decades. He still performs even though he’s in his ‘80s. His voice is just as sweet as it always was. He has so many good songs. Please review more of his songs
Smokey Robinson is a Motown icon!! He's just as popular today as he was in every decade. Love all of Smokeys songs. He's on my playlist.
I never heard the entire song from Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Those vocal gymnastics are out of this world. Thank you for reviewing this!
The name of the group was known as The Miracles from 1957 until 1965 when they became Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.
If you want to hear an older Smokey listen to the live version from “Daryl House” featuring Daryl Hall of Hall&Oats, and Smokey Robinson singing Sara Smile/ ooh baby baby, both voice age like fine wine…..
Oh, hell yeah. ruclips.net/video/iRxCy44zg5M/видео.html
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles were, to me, one of the best acts that came out of Motown. You might also want to check out: "The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage", "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and "Tears of a Clown". Soul perfection!
"Tears of a Clown" is his BEST song. The instrumentation (name another soul song with a bassoon), the groove, the lyrics, his voice, everything is perfect.
amen
Co-written with Stevie Wonder
That “Female Voice” is
Smokey’s wife Claudette
Rogers-Robinson. She was an Original Member of the MIRACLES.
There is a song called 'When Smokey Sings' by the UK group ABC.
Smokey is one of the best, great songwriter also. OOO Baby Baby and Tracks of my Tears r incredible! Also had two great songs solo early 80s Crusin and Being with You.
Yes and amen. Smokey wrote my favorite Motown song - My Girl. I could listen to him all day.
"Being With You" was his last huge hit, I believe, and it came out in 1981. 20 years after "Shop Around" That's a good song to compare how his voice changed.
I know you both would love "You Really Got A Hold on Me."
Smokey is still alive! He does talk in a high pitched voice. Someone once sang in a song, "when Smokey sings, I hear violins". He was one of a kind. I feel privileged to have lived through that musical era! Motown was it!!!
You should listen to ABC's "When Smokey Sings" - it's an ode to Smokey, and a really fun song in itself.
You two are adorable. Smokey means Motown to me, growing up in the 60’s and the way their songs still touch my heart and fill me with joy. I still love him and the Miracles every time I hear them. I’m back there again, filled with the emotions of that era ❤️ I love that your young generation can see how awesome they still a possivive
What great phrasing... This might be one of the best vocal performances of all time. THIS is how to sing!
Truly an amazing artist, what's crazy is in his older years he still has that same soft sultry voice. And for his age he definitely looks youthful. One of the Legends of Motown both as a group and as a solo artist.
Smokey is still around. He's old as dirt. And his voice never changed one little bit. He still sounds exactly the same way he always did.
That's because he sang in his natural register.
There was a song in the 80's by a group called ABC named "When Smokey Sings" which was written as a tribute. "When Smokey sings, I hear violins...when Smokey sings, I forget everything"
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, included his wife, Claudette. She joined the group in 1957, while they were still dating. She was in the group until 1964. There is actually a female vocal in this recording, which can be heard, if you listen closely.
He talks like he sings. Kind of light and whispery. Love Smokey!
You really are going to like Tears Of A Clown by this artist.
Yes@!!!
Smokey greats...Tears of a Clown, Crusin, Tracks of my Tears and many more.
Smokey has done SO many good songs, and hit songs too. One of my favorite male artists.
Tears of a Clown, You've Really Got A Hold On Me, and so many more. One of the greatest singer songwriters.
Please don’t forget about the female groups that came out of Motown. The Supremes were one of the staples of Motown along with other groups you’ve already listened to. Please don’t ignore them.
Smokey Robinson was a main force behind the success of Motown. Not only was he & The Miracles one of their top-selling groups, Smokey wrote their songs, & many others for many of the Motown artists. My favorite SR & Miracles song is Would I Love You. You've Really Got A Hold On Me is another good one, & was covered by The Beatles on one of their earliest albums. Smokey said hearing The Beatles singing one of his songs was both a huge thrill & a major confidence booster. So, soooo many great songs to choose from!!
Love all of Smokey's hits, but you should check out Linda Ronstat's version of "Tracks of My Tears". I consider it her best song.
Smokey Robinson was a leader with Motown. Writing many of the hit songs for his group and the other acts was a big part of his contributions. My Girl was one of them.
Smokey and the Miracles along with The Marvelettes got Motown off the ground in the early days. So, if love Motown you really need to check out The Marvelettes . Please Mr. Postman and Too Many Fish In The Sea are two great ones to start with. Also, The Tears Of A Clown by Smokey and the Miracles and when you get around to this one checkout the song that inspired it. My Smile Is Just A Frown Turned Upside Down that Smokey wrote for Carolyn Crawford.
The Beatles covered both Mr. Postman (Marvelettes) and Money (Smokey).
@@wpl8275 "Money (That's What I Want)" was actually a Barrett Strong song. It was one of Motown's first hits. Berry Gordy co-wrote it.
@@wpl8275 Money, Barrett Strong
All of the kids listening to Smokey and the miracles or the Temptations did the dance along with them! So fun! I love this song.
TEARS OF A CLOWN!!! The kids will love it!!!!!
I was born in 1961. My oldest sister was 14 years older then me. We grew up outside Detroit and these songs make up my earliest memories. My mother was from England and it was all Motown and the Beatles. America's poets - Bob Dylan - Merle Haggard - and Smokey Robinson.
Smokey grew into his voice for in-person performances... I remember when I was about 10 y/o in the early 60s, my older sister and I went to see him at the Apollo - nyc - and they booed him so much while singing this song. But I always enjoyed the studio versions of his songs back then. Grew to love his live performances later on.
You just saw what Motown is known for! Smooth vocals, tight choreography, outfits on point.
Great group. Lots of hits. The group started in 1955 as 5 teenagers from Detroit. Three of them had known each other for years. After a couple years one of the guys (Bobby Rogers who I think sometimes shared vocal lead duties with Smokey) left to join the army. He had a sister named Claudette who was singing with a girl group. She took her brother's place with this group and around 58 or 59 the band became The Miracles (they had used a different name before) and also after 2 years of dating Smokey and Claudette got married. After a couple more years of trying to start a family (Claudette had several miscarriages) she decided not to tour any more. So they made the live appearances without her but she sang on the records. Back in the day, most TV appearances were lip synched which is probably why you heard her but didn't see her. (Nice catch Amber) She continued that for a few years until Smokey came down with a bad case of Asian Flu and was bedridden for a couple months. During that time Claudette filled in for Smokey on tour. So I guess the answer to the question was there a woman in The Miracles was yes and no. LOL.
Check out the 80s group ABC's song called When Smokey Sings. It's a great tribute to Smokey Robinson with an 80s British invasion twist.
Ooh Baby Baby 😍 is my favorite. It really showcases Smokey's falsetto
One of those legendary fun tunes by legendary performers!
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles ran the spectrum from light and airy to dark and stormy. My favorite from them has always been I Second that Emotion. Love y'all!
Smokey Robinson is a legend and a Motown icon.
Smokey is so beloved internationally that the British rock group ABC actually dedicated a song to him called “When Smokey Sings”. In the song the ABC lead singer Martin Fry gushes about who he could never match Smokey’s smoothness.
Fun fact back in 1987 when the tribute song hit the Billboard Top 10, Smokey actually had a song of his own there as well.
I had a chance to meet Smokey a couple of years ago, at a wine event of all places. He was most gracious, and kind. I've been a Smokey since the early '60's.
Smokey’s song Quiet Storm kicked off a whole genre of radio stations whose style was “quiet storm” after that.
I like a few other songs from that period more than "Quiet Storm".
Ahhhhh.....Smokey. He was sooooo smooth. I loved Smokey.
This song was a hit twice, once in 1961 by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and again in 1976 covered by Captain and Tennille, whose version is also great, really different, with lots of piano.
Tears of a Clown is my all time favorite Smokey Robinson Song.
Shop Around was very early Smokey and helped to get Motown off and running. Miracles hits that became classics are Ooh Baby Baby, Tracks of My Tears, Tears of a Clown, More Love, The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage, Baby Baby Don't Cry and then Smokey solo sang Cruisin'.
I'm still dyin' for you to get to the Platters. When Tony Williams hits the high on "Only You", you'll melt! We need you to hear it.
One of the best songwriters for Motown and a fantastic performer!
Smokey Robinson still doing tours at the age of 81. One of his best song as an older man is "The Quite Storm"
You're! That is Smokey's natural register not falsetto. He is in his late 70's and is still performing. And he talks softly and his talking voice is high as he sings. I saw him live when he was in his 40's as a solo act It was a venue in San Carlos, CA called the "Circle Star" theater where the performers were on a stage in the shape of a circle that would slowly rotate around, so there was no bad seats in the place. Everyone could see them! It was an extraordinary venue unheard of elsewhere. But unfortunately , they shut it down many years ago. Great memories as I saw many headliners there!
Can Never go wrong with Smokey and the Miracles. Any Motown! Like Bob Seger. Try. Back in 72.🤠🇺🇸🐎🇨🇦🏈
I remember seeing them at The Apollo after "Ooo Ba y Baby" and seeing. Girls crying in the aisles! That is a cute voice for ya!
You two are the cutest EVER!!!
Love your channel and keep up the great work!!! 😃♥️👍🏼
Cruising is my favorite Smokey song. Actually one of my favorite songs of all time!!
Amber ….. you are sooo right back in the day the girls use to swoon over him… his voice would drive us wild!
Claudette Rogers was with the group from the Matadors days. She was Sonny Rogers' sister and eventually married Smokey Robinson. Smokey was with the group from 1955, when they started as The Five Chimes. They were originally school buddies from Detroit. Toni Tennille (The Captain & Tennille) does a great cover of Better Shop Around.
William "Smokey" Robinson is a living legend. A beautiful voice and a magnificent song writer to boot.
"Ooh Baby Baby" is a must to react to.
Co-written by Smokey and Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records. That's Berry on the piano, and Smokey's wife Claudette singing the female backing vocal. Captain & Tennille climbed the charts with a cover of this song in 1976. Their cover is the only one with a female lead vocal.
Claudette Rogers Robinson is the backup singer and married to Smokey from 1960-1986, inducted in Hall of Fame with Smokey.
I recently just around a year ago Me and my wife went to a Smokey Robinson Concert here in San Diego, and Smokey can still Ding those songs 🙂👍
The summer before covid Smokey with full band and backup came to the San Diego County Fair 👌 🙌 Still has it...
Love the "Miracles". In fact my brother and I have the 45 rpm of this song. This is one of Smokey Robinson's first hits which he was the writer of record which also was before he and Gordon formed "MoTown". Very talented performer and lyricist.
YOU'VE REALLY GOT A HOLD ON ME is my favorite Smokey Robinson and The Miracles song. A must reaction.
Ooh Baby Baby, by Smokey Robinson will really melt your heart! The woman that was in the group at one time was his wife.
Smokey Robinson had so many great songs.
my favorite Smokey song for sure
"You Really Got a Hold on Me".
A few years ago (six max) I saw Smokey perform a concert for two straight hours with just a five minute break for one of his back up singers to sing a song. He wore a red leather suit and silk shirt the whole time LOL. He sounded a little more gravelly just because of age, but still PERFECT.
I just saw Smokey in concert and his voice is still as smooth as silk! And his dance moves are still on point!
oh my, R&B and like a rock and roll beat, love good sax,
His song Cruisin’ Together was the first song I ever slow danced to. It still resonates with me, 40 years later, lol
Ohh Baby Baby one of the best love songs by them
I truly believe us baby boomers grew up through the greatest time of all. We had the greatest music. We were so socially conscious and tried to pass it on to our kids. Our music was from the 50s with some great music from Chuck Berry and the 60s with the Beatles and the Bee Gees and 70s with Motown. We were trend setters, believers and achievers. Moon walks and freedom walks, it was all there and the music told the stories. Smokey is still with us. His singing was the same all the way thru his career. Crusin was a great song by him. His speaking voice is the same just soft and smooth. Check out his interview on the Yankee baseball station on Yankeeography. You'll love it.
One of the most danceable songs ever.
Such a happy pickup sound.....makes you wanna dance around.
The woman name is Claudette Rogers. She was in the group in the early days, but eventually stop live performances but continued to provide vocals on tracks.
Bob Dylan was impressed by Smokey 's way with words. The Miracles did originally include a woman, Claudette Robinson. Yes, she was married to Smokey from 1959 to 1986. She left the group in terms of performing sometime in 1964, although she continued sing back up vocals with them until 1972.
Claudette was Smokey's wife and the sister of one of the Miracles. She always recorded and performed with them until she got pregnant then she stopped performing live and continued to record
I grew up listening to Motown since I was a teen, & this is in my 'top 5' Motown songs of all time!!
Smokey is my favorite Motown performer. Yes! You have to review more!
one of my favourite Smokey Robinson songs is from the early 80s and is a ballard that was a UK number 1 called being with you
The female voice you hear is Claudette Robinson, Smokey's wife. She recorded with the group but due to health issues she did not tour. She had as many as 7 miscarriages & was kept off of the road & was studio bound.
Not recorded in Motown, but you need to do Percy Sledge “When a Man Loves a Woman “
Absolutely. Amazing song
Ooh baby baby or put the blame on me.
Check ABC's tribute. When Smokey sings..
Just sums up listening to him.
I love watching you two discovering music I grew up yo and my parents, this is my parents generation but it influenced what I now enjoy. Mr Smokey Robinson (aka Green Eyes) music tells the story of his youth, His 70's & 80's catalogs are equally as popular poetic and beautiful..try these The Miracles Come Round Here- I'm the one you want, Baby Baby Don't Cry, Smokey solos A Thousand Times, Cruisin, Baby Come Close, The Agony and the Ecstasy, Quiet Storm, Tell Me Tomorrow, Being With You, duet with Rick James Ebony Eyes, .. Guys you are about to enter the poetic world of mr Smokey Robinson and it's soft sensual and timeless,,,
Smokey Robinson did an episode of "Who Do You Think You Are.;" he's the real deal. This guy was the President of Motown Records. He is a giant in the musical culture of America. A rabbit hole worth going down.
