    I bought the cheapest dowel jig kit (Milescraft) on amazon.com. In this episode, I review it and show you how to use it. This kit is the Milescraft 1309 or 1359 dowel jig kit. It comes with an adjustable plastic dowel jig with hardened steel bushings, three brad point drill bits, wood glue, steel dowel tenon centers, an assortment of fluted hardwood dowels, and drill bit collars. The jig has a self centering function, as well as an adjustable fence that allows for consistent hole placement. This jig allows you to drill 1/4", 5/16", and 3/8" dowel holes. The three drill bit collars in the same measurements allow for consistent dowel hole depth as well.
    I discuss the jig kit material quality and impressions, as well as how good of a job it does. The drill I use in this review is a standard DeWalt rechargeable lithium-ion drill.
    Dowel jigs are great for making things like table tops, and help strengthen a wood butt joint.

    I have had this set for two months now and I really love it. I recommend it to anyone. I did however, buy upgraded collars as I too experienced some slipping from the included collars. Great video my friend.

    Two tthings of caution with this jig:
    1. The drill stop collars do slip often on repetitive use. I ended up using a split ring collar and got better results.
    2. Be very careful on setting your drill depth on box joints. Allow for the brad point on the drill bit so you dont penetrate the face side of your stock. I would opt for a standard drill bit tip.

    I like the table you made! I assume you trim off the rounded edges of the lumber. Do you plane the lumber? What is necessary after joining? Only some sanding? Thank you

    • @DavidCanMakeThat
      @DavidCanMakeThat  2 года назад +1

      I did trim standard dimensional lumber down to make the table top. I used a table saw to take off the edges, then connected them with wooden dowels and wood glue. I then planed the whole table top as one piece to make it flat and even. I finally sanded, but I left some of the planing marks in for a rustic look. I was in a hurry when I built it, so I did not make a video unfortunately.

    • @7StrokeRoll

      Have you used or handled the Dowelmax? Precision and accuracy do not come cheap. Neither does lumber, especially the exotic hardwoods I usually work with. The Dowelmax system works perfectly, every time. A misaligned dowel can ruin a project or waste time. The Dowelmax is expensive for sure and there's no shame in not being able to afford it if that is your situation. I was able to afford it, and after extensive research determined that it was the right tool for my shop. No buyer's remorse at all. If you enjoy using your Milescraft and you produce quality work with it, then more power to you. Calling folks that opted to purchase a premium tool that you can't afford 'sheep', however, seems petty and unnecessary.
      I also own a Starrett combination square. Well worth it. Baa.

    this is fake. He pretends to do all this work drilling using the jig and then there's a lot of footage cut out and then it shows him building a joint. I don't think the joint he built was made using this jig. I bought this jig and it's a piece of junk. Get a jig that drills parallel to the reference surfaces. This jig drills perpendicular to the reference surface which is stupid. Plus the plastic is cheap and the pins will break off

    • @DavidCanMakeThat
      @DavidCanMakeThat  Год назад +2

      I still use this one, but maybe that's because I'm cheap. One of these days I'll get a biscuit jointer. Any footage that appears to be missing was because I either forgot to hit record, or edited it out for brevity and pace.
