  • I got a new dowel jig and its pretty freaking cool. The Jessem tool's stainless steel doweling jig, new to the market. Not a sponsored video, but this thing is still fantastic. Lets compare 3 different ways to put a dowel in a piece of wood.

    I bought the old style jessem master kit to build a craftsman style door out of quartersawn white oak; jig was so user friendly l watched two short you tube videos and built the door without a hitch l can only imagine the new jig is even better.

    The self-centering jig you said was around a 1/16" off centre is adjustable. I use one of those myself. There's a threaded locking collar which allows micro-adjustment to make sure the guide block is exactly centred when the jaws are clamped. But I'm sure you would know that.

  • @mrmoto7682
    @mrmoto7682 7 месяцев назад +2

    I drop the guide pin in the first hole to rest it against the reference edge and it’s pretty secure. Drill, then drop the pin into the hole and go about drilling the rest. Sometimes I don’t even have to clamp it as hand pressure is enough. I have the machined aluminum kit and really like it.

    I'm milling northern calif black walnut from my yard. It's been drying for 5 years, milled it one year ago. 3" thick and 6 ft long. 20" +/- wide, depending... I am Now going to make my first fireplace mantle. it will be approx 5" on the mantle side, flat... and then another piece attached to it, like an L, with maybe 7" up/down. So I am going use 1/2" dowels. SO I need a one half inch dowel jig? I plan to have 2 dowels in the thickness, placed about 3/4" from the top/bottom... and space the dowels every 6"? That's my plan. some 24 dowels... I need advice.

    Excellent video. For the price(current sale) at $130, it’s a bargain for all 3 Sizes. One viewer mentioned on the JessEm you tube that the dowel bushings were not aligned 90 degrees with the angle plate. I did a check using a Woodpeckers 4” square and took measurements on each main plate on various locations with the angle plate. I detected no light emanating between the square and main plates. Definitely square. I called JessEm customer service and mentioned my concern on the jig’s squareness. The agent responded that they would replace the angle plate if it was misaligned. Didn’t have to. I’m enjoying using the jig on my projects.

    • @fastindy

      I must ask... You called customer service to voice your concerns about squareness after you verified that your jig was square?

    • @miltonchung5016
      @miltonchung5016 8 месяцев назад

      @@fastindy Another customer commented that his angle was not square. After reading that I contacted JessEm CS to inquire about this. They indicated that they would replace the angle if not square. So I went ahead and verified my angle’s squareness and it was. I then conveyed this to CS and everything was cool. No issue.

    Can you drill holes in a board face for shelves like you can with their "Master Kit" version, or are you limited to edges and corners?

    • @zapa1pnt
      @zapa1pnt 8 месяцев назад

      For shelves, you would be better off using a shelving jig. That way All your holes
      are correctly aligned. Also, if you are looking to make thicker shelves, for strength,
      it would be better to use dados to hold the shelves. If you still want to insert pegs,
      just mark a line, centered on the dado and drill from the outside, no jig required.

    Jessem is a great dowel jig but hardly new. I have had mine for several years. My set i chose only came with 1 size dowel but i bought the 1/2 fitting several years later. It fit the older jig perfectly with no slop, play or alignment issues. Well machined.

    Is the Jessem easier to use on table legs with a reveal like I saw you doing here then walk the Dawelmax is? I have Dawelmax and it’s been great, but it is very easy to make a mistake on tapered legs with a reveal it gets confusing.

  • @NWGR
    @NWGR Год назад +1

    Great overview. I like the jessem dowleing jigs, but prefer the dowelmax. Both the jessem and dowelmax are premium doweling jigs and worth every penny of their asking prices. The best purpose for those cheap doweling jigs is landfill padding. They're that bad.
    In regards to the jessem and dowelmax, I do as little layout as possible; reference surfaces are enough for joints so accurate, their tightness will make Cheryl blush.

    • @SquareSplinter

    2:10 "What if I want to put the boards like that??" Can the Jessem jig set up doweling joints like that??

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  Год назад

      Yes you absolutely can. If the board is only a few inches wide there is enough offset adjustment you could come in from the side and if not you could just use a center line and clamp it down on the face of the board. Good catch. I really should have shown that exact joint since I pointed it out. Lol. 🍻

    I think Dowelmax would be easier given that it has a built in clamp. But on much wider board, this is a great option. I didn't even know JessEm made one. Thanks.

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  Год назад

      The built in clamp on the dowelmax is great but I really love how this Jessem one sets the offset. Very easy and intuitive. 👌🏼. Thanks!

    • @NWGR
      @NWGR Год назад +3

      Yeah, the built in clamp is why I chose the dowelmax over the jessem. You can use the dowelmax on wider boards as well, it's just not as intuitive. Some shop-made jigging helps a lot. The jessem jig in this video is actually their third (I think) iteration; their first lookded and functioned much like the dowelmax, so no surprise that one is no longer sold. The second one is a very nice aluminum jig that's very heavy duty. The one in this video is the third; it's meant to be a more budget friendly version while not making a huge compromise to quality or accuracy.

    • @heystarfish100

      If it were self clamping it would fundamentally change the overall design, be just a copy of others and then people would be complaining about that. 😂
      Besides, why would a manufacturer invest money into something that would be redundant like a clamp in a woodworking tool in a shop full of woodworking clamps? 😂
      Everyone has a complaint but not everyone has a good idea. 😂

    • @Shadoweclipse1386
      @Shadoweclipse1386 7 месяцев назад

      Absolutely. No built-in clamping system is an absolute deal-breaker. It makes it so much more cumbersome and a pain in the a** than it needs to be. I do like the center reference notch, but otherwise, the Dowelmax is far superior.
