Starts in only one cylinder, and the other problem is the fuel detonation,,caused by the huge force that the piston make to run,,,the fuel doesnt do the diesel cycle,,the fuel dont burn gradually,,,the engine rotate some degres, and an amount of fuel ignites very fast, and the result is detonation,,,,,,same as the otto cycle when detonation occurs. may break a piston this issue. Another problenm if the engine is old,,,may measure the compression ratio, that may be higher than 15:1 If the compression ratio isnt equal in all the cylinders is a problem,,,some cylinders fire quickly and the others no..as this case.. but for start the engine more fast, a preheater may be installed,,and warm the coolant water,.to 50 or more celcious degrees,,this help the engine to start quicly. the clag is generated because the fuel didnt ignite ,it is converted in steam fuel, very flammable and white colour. The clag may remain until all the cylinders work. When the exhaust smoke is blue colour,is a ring problems or an oil leakage,by the valves seals.Black smoke means fuel incomplete burnt.

Great vid mate! I dont get it... Why dont they install a preheater to keep the coolant at a steady 50celsius would make the engine last alot longer. This 1 cilinder stuff takes aprox 300.000km of the engine's life. The Rabbits in Germany (DB Class 218 have it and some of them still have thier original MTU 12V956 TB10 engine which is aprox 45-48years old now.) Everyone loves this Valenta why not preserve it in a humane way and prevent enginedamage You can hear the bearings complain. When they first rev it up. A 10 minute idle followed by a gentle rev would be ideal.
    Anyways what a great clag!

+DieselHeart BR218 Preheater is on the list.. (install already started) There was one lumpy cylinder in this video which the injector pump (just changed) was over egging - can hear it thumping, part of the reason for startup was so I could adjust. This was our first experience at properly cold starting... I can now get it up to idle in about 10 seconds without too much coughing and banging.

You’re right it isn’t good for the longevity of the engine. The knocking you hear is the piston(s) knocking as further heat is generated before all the fuel ignites.

cidertom the engine was taken out of a fgw hst when thay had mtu engines fitted (The powercar will also receive installation of production Paxman Valenta RP200L engine Number S508 (installed new into 43153 in 2001 under Virgin CrossCountry, before re-installation to 43143 of First Great Western after a spell in storage), donated to the NRM from the MTU re-power programme. This will mark a sooner return to traffic of a Paxman Valenta powercar than previously expected. The work is currently being undertaken at East Midlands Trains HST depot Neville Hill T&RSMD. taken from wikipedia)

@@leehayes70 many people believe that one of the main purposes in life is to preserve human history.
if you want this ""junk"" scrapped, you quite literally want to destroy one of the two prototype locomotives that revolutionised british high speed rail travel.
also you should maybe get a fact check, as if you get every claggy train that has ever ran, not just in britain but all over the world, the total environmental damage would not even compare to what cars and especially lorries / semi trucks have caused.
leave ships, aircraft and trains alone, focus on lorries and cars. good day :)
