Great review, many thanks. I've been using 2x Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD's in RAID0 since they came out. I was originally going to just get 1x Samsung 990 Pro 4TB drive but Samsung took ages to release it. The RAID0 performance has been good (14000 read/13000 write), no complaints here.
I enjoy your reviews, very thorough, and informative. I have made a couple of purchases based on your reviews. I will be purchasing a 990 Pro 4TB since it is single sided, which is an important detail that most reviews leave out. I will be installing it on a laptop board that will only except a single sided SSD. Some of the other reviews I've looked at don't take time to do extensive testing or mention physical details such as single or double sided, or heatsink thickness etc. Thanks for the exceptionally good, detailed review.
I just ordered the 990 pro 4GB. Arrives in two days. Nice to hear that they fixed the issues. Btw, upgrading from 970 evo plus 1TB bought in July 2020 for $218, while the new one is $250 (black Friday sale) for 4TB and it’s pro version.

Used it for 10 years in my 1st CPU build and still indicates 70% life. upgrade to a new PC now with a 950 Pro and a 980 pro at very good price, love Samsung SSD. Had one SSD failed after 1 week use -they gave me a upgraded replacement (in nr . not GB) never looked back again.
I was choosing between SN850X 2TB vs 990 Pro 2TB. In the end, I took both: SN850X 2TB for PS5 and 990 Pro 2TB for my PC (I updated the firmware, of course). Both models are very good. It’s great that Samsung has finally released a 4TB version, thanks for the review! Assassin's Creed earrings are very cool :)

Doubly impressive since English is not your first language. Keep up the awesome work!!!

Great review and a very good SSD (as always by Samsung). I have the 990Pro 2TB since December 2022 and I faced the issue you mentioned in the video (firmware fixed only several months, non just weeks, after I bought it). The 4TB is still a very solid product but I really don't like those gaming performances and I don't figure out why they are so poor. I think I will end up in buying a SN850X 4TB just for games while keeping the 990Pro 2TB for OS and apps. P.s. I know it has nothing to do with the review but I love the color and the shape of your nails. Too cute!

I would have gotten the Crucial NVMe but they are way way too expensive. I'll wait. As this motherboard supports Gen-5 NVMe in all 5 slots.

@@TechTestersI have one more question that came to my mind just before i wanted to pre-order. The SSD distributes heat through the heatspreader on the bottom and the controller on the top. Now I have seen on newer motherboards that they also have heatspreader pads on the bottom of the motherboard. I'm using the Msi X570 Gaming Edge Wifi, which has a slot with a heatsink, but it's just a heatspreader pad that sits on top of the SSD. Does that mean that the heat can't really be dissipated completely and the SSD gets too hot? Is it better to leave out the built-in heatsink and buy the SSD with the heatsink pre-installed?
I've got an old...like 8 year old Sandisk SSD. 120GB.A Z400, as a bootdrive. 68TB written and absolutely no issues at all. SSD's for a while now are WAY more sturdy. All my HDD's have some kind of issues and clearly visible in any SMART data viewer.
Thank you for posting this excellent discussion of the Samsung 4 Tb drive. I do own 2 Samsung NvME drives that were affected by the "drive health failure" issue. Fortunately, I did the necessary firmware updates on each of the drives. They are working fine today. I was displeased with Samsung for not handling this issue better at the time. When I had the chance to build a complete system based on an Asus ProArt Z790 motherboard, I opted to buy Western Digital SN850x devices instead of Samsung devices. If I could build another system today, I would watch all of your NvME product reviews, listen carefully to your advice, look at product availability here in the USA, and then decide. Thanks again for this review. I think I understand the amount of work that you put into examining the Samsung product and then producing the review content. Both are considerable projects by themselves and require specialized skills and constant training.
Nice to see the Gen 5 SSDs being included in the benchmarks. I wonder how noticeable the differences in benchmarks are in actual use. I have no idea if the top of the chart performer is 1 second faster, or 10 seconds faster, or 0.1 seconds faster than the middle of the pack when launching a game or application, for example. I can tell that it's faster in score but have no way to translate it to real difference in usage.
I am still running with 4 x 1TB Samsung 970 pro versions. The oldest two are from 2018 and the latest 2021. All of them still have a health of 100% procent. I have a feeling the 970 pro still is the best and reliable nvme from Samsung.
Great video! My greatest disappointment regarding Samsung SSDs is the fact that the "Pro" series are no longer using 2-bit MLC NAND, but they use regular 3-bit TLC NAND, which is slower, 10X less durable, and less reliable. I would like to see a 1TB M.2 PCIe 5.0 x4 drive with 2GB DRAM and 1-bit SLC NAND. But no company seems to release such a drive. (Enmotus's FuzeDrive was the closest to that, however, today Enmotus is no longer in business).
Bought this drive yesterday, false humbleness aside, I am the guy who will make the most revealing single-threaded IOPS-wise benchmark showing that 4TB 990 PRO is the king... it will stress 1100 GB swap file for really random reads/writes of size 16 to 256 bytes... brutality itself... will report the Health and how many Total Reads/Writes in TB were done by reading the SMART... the whole torture will be on Fedora 39... As for your review, it is good but lacks the synthetic IOPS reporting, my suggestion for your future reviews is to include screenshots of 4KB random IOPS for 1GB and 64GB blocks.
As a photo and video editor, I'm so looking forward to finally upgrading my laptop (currently a budget gamer laptop from 2019 with half tb ssd) to a modern premium laptop and the first thing I'm going to do is toss this 4tb 990 in there for a total of 5tb so that I can stop sweating every time I need to import another SD card full of photos. Also I might actually be able to keep some games installed for once.
Thanks for the excellent review! Please consider reviewing also the Lexar NM790 4 TB and the Innovation IT PerformanceY 4TB, both of which cost about 200€ right now, compared to >300€ for the 990 4TB.
Hi Nada, thanks for the great videos. Please would you consider a video on the Lexar NM790 2TB/4TB drives. I'd be super interested in the difference compared to the 990 Pro. Secondly a video for the best type of NVME drives for external enclosures like the Acasis TBU401E Thunderbolt 3/4. Thanks again for the content.
For gaming, the WD is better. The test that collects all sorts into real life tests allows others to go closer on score to the WD. But pure gaming, none of the gen 4 is that close
Maybe you could make a video about NVME enclosures like satechi’s USB4 enclosure and Acasis NVME USB3 enclosure, since most Mac users need this enclosure in order to make it work with their Mac! Would be awesome to see one! Would be cool to see how well a 990 pro will perform in these enclosures, some heatsink tips regarding using enclosures etc. Etc. Oh and greetings from Amsterdam, your vids are great! :)
@@TechTesters yes they are a little spare at the moment. But a lot of people are getting into NVME drives and enclosures. Me and almost all of my creative friends, like a few hundred of us are looking for a good enclosure and are on e regularly basis scouting RUclips and google for reviews of reliable and thermal capable (with decent heatsink) 40 gbps usb4 enclosures, since it is way cheaper, faster and more reliable in comparison to a SanDisk SSD. Especially the latest SanDisk SSD’s ;p. For now we are running the Acasis USB4 enclosures, a little bit shady company, does run hot but it is working for the moment. We are waiting for Satechi’s USB4 Enclosure to be available again, which is expected to have better thermal control, so running a lot cooler which as you know will be more beneficial to drive lifespan and better read/write speeds of course! But we are just creative’s, trying things out on our gut feeling, and you are the pro with the cool test results and benchmarks! So we would love to see the insights (like actual read/write speeds when using a specific NVME drive per specific enclosure, operating temps etc.) from you :) If you decide to make a vid on it, you would be one of the first to do a proper one, so it would be a premiere! Regarding RUclips business, I think you will gather a lot of views and subs, since this is a new niche that comes with NVME drives! Have I already convinced you yet?! Haha We will be waiting! Cheers
Important to mention: there has been research that just shows that - the distinction in heatsink isn't WHAT heat sink you get, but just that there is one. - thats the only important factor :)
as it happens I bought 2x Samsung 980 Pro 1TB and a 2TB NVMe SSD's back earlier this year. The 2TB model is running very fast writes and reads.. but the 1TB model is not as fast as the 2TB one. I may money permitting get a 4TB Samsung NVMe SSD 990 Pro some day.. lol :D
I just bought this for my games & media and to finally move away entirely from 2.5" SATA drives. I currently have one Samsung 980 500GB for my Windows and software and two 1TB Samsung Evo drives, 850 and 870. 990 Pro will replace the latter two.
Hey, I’m thinking about this too much haha really need help deciding. I have 1tb 990 pro as my main OS drive and I want a second one mainly for gaming I’m between a 4tb 990 pro or wd black sn850x, they both around the same price here so money is not a problem. Which one should I get ? Thank you
I bought a samsung 990 pro with heatsink (4tb), and a NewQ external enclosure, but the 990 pro with heatsink does NOT fit into the NewQ enclosure! I am very upset about this. I have a new Macbook Pro with an M3 Max chip. It has several Thunderbolt 4 ports, so I'm trying to find a Thunderbolt 4, type C enclosure that will handle up to 40gps (the fastest enclosure possible) that will also fit this drive. Does anyone know what enclosure will definitely fit this drive?
seeing the version with heatsink, I wonder, can anyone tell if vertical M.2 NVME brackets used on certain older motherboards (like what ASUS had in X99 series) would physically fit heatsink (width) NVME SSD ?
I have a SN850X 4TB as main drive and my old SN850 2TB its the 2nd drive, was waiting for 990pro 4TB but abit disappointed with the real life performance on the gaming benchmarks while in theroy the 990PRO is the best latency drive in the PCI4 market, Iam not joining the PCI5 yet since on raptor lake the lanes to the graphics get halved, Bonus points for the AC earrings :D
Remove the file transfer bit within that test and the WD performs even better. Not everyone transfers files. That part of the test allows the others to catch up in points, still the WD was superior in the full test. And add the 4tb version of it, the others aren’t even close.
Can you add real work tests to your SSD reviews? Creative app start up times, game loading times, etc. I can't translate these benchmark scores to normal usage. How much quicker do apps load with a 200MB/s higher PC Mark score or 10us less latency?
That's kinda the whole point of the UL (PC Mark / 3D Mark) benchmarks, they trace real workloads and use cases. As for exactly how much faster X opens, that depends on the exact app, the rest of your system, and other variables.
I watched your review of the Western Digital WD_BLACK 1TB SN770, dated about 1 year ago. I purchase 3 of those drives. I was searching your channel for a review of the Lexar NM790 and the Lexar NM800 Pro but I was unable to find a review. Have you, or would you do a review of these drives? They boast of very high performance and are very reasonably priced. I saw the NM790 4TB advertised on sale at Amazon for $188.90 (USD) Haven't seen many good, thorough reviews, or comparisons for these drives.
I had a question after complimenting you on the thorough test of this drive. My thought on 4Tb drives is very simple, I can get two 2 Tb drives for less, but one needs to have the computer to run that and not all motherboards are made the same. I bought a drive, Fanxiang 2Tb, which has Dynamic SLC. From what I gather, it is great as long as the drive does not get too congested and single level blocks are no longer available. In this, do they really differ that much from QLC?
Thanks! Most high-end drives use SLC caching to feel fast in light use. Cheap QLC drives will really perform poorly though once you get past the SLC and/or DRAM cache, so for any serious work high-end TLCs are a lot better.
It's weird how few of my favorite tech tubers cover SSDs. You're the channel I always look to for SSD advice!

Thank you for the lovely comment, always glad the videos are appreciated!
That left sound dampening panel looks very exited about this video.
super detailed! thank you!
Informative and valuable video ! Well done !!!
Thank you!
TY, Probably waiting to buy when they are cheaper but decent premium drive. Have 970 EVO plus 2tb I just got recently for cheap on sale.
Been waiting for this for a while. Just hoping it doesn’t have the same firmware issues.
They fixed that way before the 4tb launch so it shouldn’t be a concern
Nice to see the Gen 5 SSDs being included in the benchmarks.
I wonder how noticeable the differences in benchmarks are in actual use. I have no idea if the top of the chart performer is 1 second faster, or 10 seconds faster, or 0.1 seconds faster than the middle of the pack when launching a game or application, for example. I can tell that it's faster in score but have no way to translate it to real difference in usage.
thank you for the great Review😍
You're welcome!
Nice Assassin’s Creed earrings. Thanks for the video.
As for your review, it is good but lacks the synthetic IOPS reporting, my suggestion for your future reviews is to include screenshots of 4KB random IOPS for 1GB and 64GB blocks.
awesome review as always❤❤❤
Thank you! 🤗
I got the gen5 700 1Tb when it came out for $129. It is my boot drive. I have a 4TB gen4 for my second drive.
I totally agree with you, I’d rather have 2 990’s!
For now, definitely!
Really lovely video and review. Thanks for the info and the great content. Greetings from Colombia. 😊😊
PDTA: Love your Assassin's Creed earrings. ❤❤
Thank you and you're welcome! :D
I am happy with KC3000 so far.
Great choice tbh
Thanks for the excellent review! Please consider reviewing also the Lexar NM790 4 TB and the Innovation IT PerformanceY 4TB, both of which cost about 200€ right now, compared to >300€ for the 990 4TB.
NM790 has gone through testing and will be included soon. Never heard of the other one before but I'll see if I can grab one.
@@TechTesters Great, looking forward to it!
Love the AC earings
I get it, on paper it’s technically faster… but when you consider the durability of the WD SN850x it makes more sense to go with WD
Both have 2400 TBW endurance if I'm not mistaken. And the WD is 90€ more expensive than the 990 Pro in my country
Both 4TB have 2400 TBW. The WD 850 is cheaper than the Samsung 990 by $20 atm in the US. Choosing between the two is tough imo.
For gaming, the WD is better. The test that collects all sorts into real life tests allows others to go closer on score to the WD. But pure gaming, none of the gen 4 is that close
Where can this 4tb drive be purchased?
I’m not finding it available for sale
Thanks for great review.
My pleasure!
I have a video suggestion for you - Crucial New 2024 T705 4TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe M.2 SSD
The WD 4TB is now $285 and is better than this one in some cases, so good to see more options.
Im using a 990 pro 1 Tb as I mainly stream, light gaming and video editing.
Thanks! I might do something on external cases at some point, but I don't really have a lot of them currrently.
So we would love to see the insights (like actual read/write speeds when using a specific NVME drive per specific enclosure, operating temps etc.) from you :)
If you decide to make a vid on it, you would be one of the first to do a proper one, so it would be a premiere! Regarding RUclips business, I think you will gather a lot of views and subs, since this is a new niche that comes with NVME drives!
Have I already convinced you yet?! Haha
We will be waiting! Cheers
Important to mention: there has been research that just shows that - the distinction in heatsink isn't WHAT heat sink you get, but just that there is one. - thats the only important factor :)
Pretty much. Assuming it's not complete crap :D
as it happens I bought 2x Samsung 980 Pro 1TB and a 2TB NVMe SSD's back earlier this year.
The 2TB model is running very fast writes and reads.. but the 1TB model is not as fast as the 2TB one.
I may money permitting get a 4TB Samsung NVMe SSD 990 Pro some day.. lol :D
Love your videos ❤
Thank you! :D
My almost 10 year old Crucial MX100 still shows good health, but it hasn't been used much since I moved to Linux 2 years ago.
I just bought this for my games & media and to finally move away entirely from 2.5" SATA drives. I currently have one Samsung 980 500GB for my Windows and software and two 1TB Samsung Evo drives, 850 and 870. 990 Pro will replace the latter two.
Can you please review the Intel Optane P5800X??
I Love you nada, you are my best tester
Hey, I’m thinking about this too much haha really need help deciding. I have 1tb 990 pro as my main OS drive and I want a second one mainly for gaming I’m between a 4tb 990 pro or wd black sn850x, they both around the same price here so money is not a problem. Which one should I get ? Thank you
Hi, and thanks for the great review. I am considering 4GB for my flight sim storage. This will help my decision.
Glad I helped!
Does anyone know what enclosure will definitely fit this drive?
seeing the version with heatsink, I wonder,
can anyone tell if vertical M.2 NVME brackets used on certain older motherboards (like what ASUS had in X99 series) would physically fit heatsink (width) NVME SSD ?
Looked for information about idle power consumption of which there was non. Or just power consumption in general...
It's a glitch in the firmware, all affected drives can be updated to the newer firmware which fixes the problem.
What are the best enclosures for these, i have this is one w/o heat sink and looking at a ROG Enclosure and a TUF Gaming Enclosure
nice review 💙
Thank you 🤗
I have a SN850X 4TB as main drive and my old SN850 2TB its the 2nd drive, was waiting for 990pro 4TB but abit disappointed with the real life performance on the gaming benchmarks while in theroy the 990PRO is the best latency drive in the PCI4 market, Iam not joining the PCI5 yet since on raptor lake the lanes to the graphics get halved, Bonus points for the AC earrings :D
Thanks! And I don't think you could have gone wrong either way.
Remove the file transfer bit within that test and the WD performs even better. Not everyone transfers files. That part of the test allows the others to catch up in points, still the WD was superior in the full test. And add the 4tb version of it, the others aren’t even close.
great review
What's best? TLC or QLC? And what does it mean?
What about doing the tests while encryption is active? Would speed be affected? Surely, but how much?
Nice drive but why not a led on there yet?
Why would you want a LED on there?
@@TechTesters Well some cases dont have led hd activity light displays.... I also love watching the led activity when data is loading etc. 😊
Welcome back
Thank you? :D
This ssd is better in every way than the WD B SN850X except GAMIMG. I would like to see this ssd vs SN850X 4TB.
Except gaming ? Why ?
Can you add real work tests to your SSD reviews? Creative app start up times, game loading times, etc.
I can't translate these benchmark scores to normal usage. How much quicker do apps load with a 200MB/s higher PC Mark score or 10us less latency?
That's kinda the whole point of the UL (PC Mark / 3D Mark) benchmarks, they trace real workloads and use cases.
As for exactly how much faster X opens, that depends on the exact app, the rest of your system, and other variables.
I just bought a WD 4Tb SN850x but need anohter ssd and will consider this.
how is the reliability? is it better than the Evo 970 MLC drive?
How do you know it is the best option when you really haven't tested the Solidigm drives yet still?
What about laptop? Can this Samsung be placed with a heatsink? I doubt it would fit. So is it worth buing it without a heatsink for laptop?
I watched your review of the Western Digital WD_BLACK 1TB SN770, dated about 1 year ago. I purchase 3 of those drives. I was searching your channel for a review of the Lexar NM790 and the Lexar NM800 Pro but I was unable to find a review. Have you, or would you do a review of these drives? They boast of very high performance and are very reasonably priced. I saw the NM790 4TB advertised on sale at Amazon for $188.90 (USD) Haven't seen many good, thorough reviews, or comparisons for these drives.
Im hoping to have them tested in the next few weeks. But you never know.
Toffe video! Tnx 🙏
Gorgeous ❤❤❤
I just bought a 990 pro 2tb made in july , do you think it was have the katest firmware from the factory?
Do I need a Heatsink for my Razer blade laptop?
I just got the 2tb 990 pro to use for the ps5 the manufacture date is 9 2023 will it have the latest firmware please?
