The information you are providing in this video (9:45) is wrong. This drive doesn’t have a ‘better’ controller than 990 EVO. It is the exact same controller. What’s new about the 990 evo plus is that they are using the V8 flash nand. Also used on Samsung 990 pro. So basically 990 EVO plus is a combination of 990 EVO controller and 990 PRO nand, without dram. As you have seen the perfomance is close to 990 EVO, but what you did not mention is what advantage this V8 nand gives over the V6 nand from the 990 evo: better energy efficieny and thermals. That’s it.
the plus controller is updated vs the standard evo controller for pcie 5 and a few other small tid bits, of change. they are not 100% the same as you claim, its definately different due to the updates the plus got over the standard evo and the pro models. most nvme by same brand not tons of difference but some on the controller. cant use a evo controller on a plus model, = not same it wont work
@@kooltime8597 and beside the point , as well as obvious , any gen 4 drive can run on a gen 5 slot . the commentor 's point was 100% correct and gave better info than the video although i do like this channel.
Can somebody explain this to me? I dont see how this would free up lanes in a way that was not possible before. Motherboard makers could already make from a 4x pcie 5.0 to two 4x 4.0 slots. Its also not like you can physically put 2 of these in one slot. So i dont really see the benefit unless i'm missing something.
@@djastua Hi Mate lets say your CPU (7600X) has 28 pcie lanes available. 4 lanes for chipset / 16 lanes for Gpu - This would generally leave 8 pcie lanes for storage (m.2/Nvme) what happens if your mobo has 3 or 4 m.2/nvme slots? (You could only use two of them at 4.0 x 4) if you utilised 5.0 x 2 then you could use of 4 available slots.
Good video with nice tests and interesting info. Personally I have a new (for me) favorite in the Kingston Fury Renegade 2TB. It's Gen 4 and slightly slower than the Samsung 990 EVO and EVO+. But speed isn't why I like it. There are a few things that makes it interesting to me. First of all is the price. Where I live it currently is the cheapest 2GB drive faster than 4000 MBs. That's one point. Then it has a DRAM, or at least that's what I think I found when checking the Kingston homepage. I like those so that's a second point, possibly at least. And it has a TBW rating of 2000. As I'm a total pessimist I kind of believe it really isn't as reliable as that says, but then I don't really trust any MTBF type numbers, though units with higher numbers are usually a little more reliable than those with lower numbers. Comparing this to for instance the Samsung 990 EVO that one has a rating of 1200 TBW. So the information says the Kingstone has better durability. I like durable storage so that's the third point. With three point, or possibly two, uncertain about DRAM on the Fury, it makes my list. Really it only needed that 2000 TBW rating to win for me. I would still prefer it if it was a Gen 3 drive as I hate having drives die.
Interesting results. Thanks for the WhoKeys link, had to use it a month ago to install Win 11 pro and it worked a treat, less than the cost of a cup of coffee. Awesome value and info, keep up the great work. 🙂
agreed, on a desktop monitor might be fine, but on a mobile or even laptop I would have struggled to read the text. I think it would be also nice to have some sort of visual differentiation between gen3, 4 and 5 drives, like different hue of color or something. Perhaps and extra would also be indicating the price of the drives, or price per TB. This would help us find the ideal drive for us viewers

when you tested it did you use it in PCI 5 slot or a gen 4 slot - then see what differences it makes. the 990 pro is pci 4, vs the new evo plus can go into a pci 5 slot. test the pci 5 vs pci 4 on the drive
Not worth it, the 4tb 990pro is about 50bucks cheaper around here with better performance. For the price of 1 990 evo plus you could buy almost 2 lexar nm790
