Who knew?! So much involved to play music! Thank you!

Good discussion gentlemen. Having done things (back before the CCM or WM industries existed) like modifying lyrics of secular pop songs to sing in church, and more recently using handwritten charts to learn songs with worship teams, some legal obligations seemed a mystery. These days I wonder can I record my favorite Sovereign Grace worship song at home and share the audio or video with family and friends? How about putting that video on FB or YT? Does an individual need written permission from the owner/publisher to do that? Another thought; how about if I download the charts to said favorite Sovereign Grace worship song and email them to some musician friends by way of recommending the song to them. Is that a fair use of the resource?

Paul, thanks for the excellent questions! You are free to record versions of our songs and share them with friends and family to your hearts content! That goes for emailing our charts as well, which are available for free download on our website.

Putting the video on Facebook probably won’t cause much of a fuss, but if you post it on RUclips, it may result in a copyright claim, which simply means that an ad might be played before it.

Is there a viable alternative to CCLI which allows for songs to be projected on screen / livestream for most contemporary songs?
I heard some not so savoury things about the ownership of CCLI - particularly the venture capital company that now owns CCLI also invests in some other dodgy things

How about doing a music cover for a song? I know someone that recently started doing drum covers for some worship songs- do you need a license for that?

You don’t need a license, but your video might be monetized, which means that RUclips will play an ad before. If it’s just you playing the drums to your own version of the song, it’s unlikely that will happen though.
