Airline Pilot Breaks Down Airplane Flying Scenes From Film & TV | WIRED

- Airline captain Fatima Shafi examines scenes depicting airplanes from movies and television. Why do the pilot and copilot repeat what each other are saying in 'Sully'? Does weight really affect an empty aircraft like in the Tom Cruise film 'American Made'? Do pilots lie to passengers when they say they'll only have to wait, "another 30 minutes"?
Fatima Shafi is a captain for a major US commercial airline and is also a former avionics engineering officer for the Pakistan Air Force.

She killed it!
I'm getting r/niceguy vibes here.
Bruh she annihilated "Flight"
For the wrong reasons. Now I'll admit I'm neither an aviation structural engineer, nor a an aerodynamics whizz, but I'd be more troubled by the idea of flying an aircraft upside down than I would be by which engine got shut down when (the movie doesn't get it wrong BTW, they shut down the right engine, and try to fly just on the left one).
@@GoranXII she roasted it for _many_ reasons. Legit question - if you aren't an expert in aviation, why do you say what she said was "wrong"?
@@lukerinderknecht2982 Because she said "of course you lost power, you just shut down your engine." Except they shut down the _right_ engine, but then panicked and said they lost the _left_ engine as well. It's not an issue of engineering, it's an issue of left and right.
@@GoranXII you're right, they did shut down the right engine and not the left (the shot of him doing so was flipped upside down, I'm guessing that's why she mixed them up).
It's not really clear why he shut one down but not the other: the co-pilot said "fire in the left engine", the captain said "put it out" but the co-pilot then puts out the right one. Regardless, at that point the other engine fails too, so there's nothing for Margaret to give "full power" to.
The bigger picture -- she points out about 7 other things that are implausible (and sums it up generally at 14:42), so when you say she annihilated it "for the wrong reasons" that's not accurate.
@@lukerinderknecht2982 She also says that having both engines out should cut electrical power, except that's not true, due to the existence of the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit). Yet she _doesn't_ criticise them for flying upside down, despite the aircraft not even being tested to take it, nor the pilots being trained to control it, at least, as far as I'm aware.

She's super knowledgeable & super professional, I can listen to her all day.

The most impressive thing about Sully (the man, and the film) is how utterly calm he was when he announced the bird strike. It was like "dum de dum dum BIRDS dum de dum dummm"
Lol there's a whole desert to land in near Vegas
The problem being they had no power and those planes don't glide. They didn't have enough altitude to get out of the city.
She's right that the airport is RIGHT there by the strip, though; I just flew in there this week and there's no way they had to land on the strip 😂
It is more visually appealing though. I mean these are movies we're talking about.
and even macaron airport
...and a whole airport nearby, as was mentioned in the video.
"........ and he's wearing the wrong hat" she's so funny
Wow she is a star. Just really compelling and eloquent.
So what ive learned is Sully is the greatest movie depiction of real aircraft flight. GQ and Wired confirm this
Here is Sully blatantly LYING to Katie Couric in his 60 Minutes interview:
ruclips.net/video/2BrNHTXMTIs/видео.htmlm13s
He knows what he said. And if he ever forgets, it is right here on tape:
ruclips.net/video/mLFZTzR5u84/видео.html
Yet you can see the clever editing that 60 Minutes did. They don't care at all about investigative journalism. Not on this story. They sweep his mistakes under the rug.
Here is Clint Eastwood's decision to repeat this same lie:
ruclips.net/video/JSlbHK07fkY/видео.htmlm11s
And Fatima too, for whatever reason, chooses to deliver to us this bogus story about superior airmanship. There were many gross errors that she could have pointed out. Error that led this aircraft to crash, when it was in perfectly good condition. Had Skiles and Sully done their job properly that day. Yet Fatima chooses to not do her job. And Couric opts out. Along with Eastwood. And the NTSB. Etc, etc, etc. Everyone who knew better.
Starting with Sully.
@Dylan Visser, this interview he gave to 60 Minutes, just a few weeks after the crash, is the ONLY time I have heard Sully come anywhere close to owning up to his mistakes:
ruclips.net/video/XQVGglYOhEg/видео.htmlm39s
Curic flat out asks him, "...do you regret anything that you did?"
"No." Sully replies, without a single second of hesitation.
This is the moment you see the OFF flags on his conscience pop into view.
And in the 11 plus years since, I have not seen any hint of that conscience reappearing.

It's one of the most gender-imbalanced careers in the world, something like 3% female. I don't think this is cultural or hierarchical though, because aviation is very rigid and meritocratic - I think most women just really don't want to be airline pilots.
edit - an obvious flaw in the above reasoning that I didn't explore: even if it's true that most women just don't want to be pilots, that itself could be a cultural artifact. But this is looking at the issue backwards. It's a lousy and boring job, so rather than asking "why don't more women want to be pilots" the more pertinent question would be "why do any men want to be pilots". The irrational inclination of men towards boring and unhealthy jobs probably *is* a cultural artifact that ought to be addressed, but feminists are unlikely to find it interesting, and would rather raise the ratio of women in these jobs (because they pay well, and are therefore "good" in our values) than reduce the existence of boring and unhealthy jobs.

In Miracle on the Hudson, starting the APU is not the first item on the QRH checklist. Actually, this step falls much further down the list for 2 engine out procedure for an A320 aircraft. It was Sulley's expert knowledge to decide to turn the APU on immediately, and this decision could have saved some lives during the emergency landing.

Loved this, although her last statement made me a little sad. I'm almost 60 and I still look up every time an airplane passes overhead, but I never learned how to fly. Life just got in the way.
I too, look up to see the aircraft flying. Was in aviation for over 50 years at different jobs but mostly as an FAA Licensed Aircraft Dispatcher. Best job I ever had. Got to fly in the cockpit many times. Gave up my cabin seat to do that whenever I could.
It's not too late! 50something is hardly 'too old' to learn something new, even so complicated. I know it's not cheap but if you want to fly, I say you find way to get that training and a pilot's license! Never give up!
Hey Larry, I'm a commercial pilot and flight instructor and I hope what I say gives a little hope. One of my students was in a similar situation to you, he wanted to fly but being afraid of what his parents would say got in his way. Went into his family business and made millions but was never happy he said. He came round to our school at 62, determined to get a private pilot's license. I signed him off for his checkride last year and he passed first try. Sharing that joy with him is one of the best moments I've had as a pilot, despite being nearly 40 years his junior. You can do this and I hope you do. Not following a dream kills many before their body gives out. You got this.

The piece of info about a sterile flight deck in terms of conversation was very interesting!
I've seen 3-4 professional pilots talk about Sully on RUclips, but one thing I find strange is that not one of them has mentioned that they break the sterile cockpit rule in the movie right before they hit the birds.
Several accidents have been blamed on cockpit conversations about non-operational matters, hence the rule. It's too easy to miss steps on checklists when you're nattering on about something that's not connected to the task at hand. Colgan Air Flight 3407, Eastern Air Lines Flight 212, and Air Florida Flight 90 are all crashes that were affected by extraneous conversations.

I loved the neutral, factual representation Clint Eastwood gave to Sully. Sure, he exaggerated some things for dramatic effect, but all in all the movie has a very unexcited and almost documentary style to it.
The reality was more than dramatic enough. First successful water landing of a plane that size, anywhere. First successful water landing of a plane even half-way close to that size, anywhere. The precision of the angle of impact was insane. Anyone who thinks that drama is expressed by shouting and random half-violent movement has a) watched too many moves AND b) never been in a serious real-life situation, ever.
@@alisoncircus I think the exxaggerated part was mostly the hearing that was much more confrontational an accusatory in the movie than it really was (for dramatic effect) the rest, not so much...

Did it bother anyone else that she says La Guardia is hated by passengers and pilots alike for many reasons and lists them, but then immediately says that she loves it and it's her favorite airport in the world and gives ZERO reasons why?
Many pilots like the challenge of LaGuardia airspace flight restrictions. Its intersecting runway and taxiway layout limited the number of movements and were often jammed with aircraft.
As she mentions, weather can and frequently does create long departure and arrival delays.
Its two 7,000' runways demand perfection. The margin for error is extremely limited.
I hated the airport layout, amenities and chaotic terminals. Though I haven't flown as part of a crew after the 2015/16 terminal upgrades.

What a lovely way to learn about the topic.
19:00 When she says losing an engine is not an emergency is accurate. I was on a air taxi in the Caribbean once on a small 3 engined aircraft. During the flight there was a minor issue with one of the engines and as a precaution the pilot shut it down. There was no noticeable loss of performance and none of the other passengers knew. The only reason i found out was because the pilot was a good friend and he allowed me to sit in the right seat and i saw him close the throttle, then the fuel air lever so i asked him what was up.
Absolutely fascinating! Thank you so much! 💟

Wow, so many videos of pilots commenting on flying scenes in movies - GQ, Vanity Fair and here! They're all different and all very interesting - thank you for this one!
For the movie Flight, its based on a real crash. Alaska airlines 261 where the jack screw failed due to poor maintenance. (not enough oil or lubrication on the threads i believe) Look it up, as they also tried to fly inverted but crashed into the ocean. Unlike the movie, no one survived.
The inverted flying was the ONLY thing this trash movie and that real flight had in common.
