Entire script of Incredibles in this scene is just amazing. Word for word she sounds like a fighter pilot (hinting at her military history back in the good days), "VFR on top", "vectors to the initial", "angels 10", "Track east", "buddy spiked", "transmitting in the blind guard". Too bad he chose to focus on something else entirely, because every pilot you speak to will be amazed at how good this scene is for KIDS MOVIE
Elastigirl's line delivery was a little too perfect, but my god the TERROR in her voice because her CHILDREN were there...That fear is something only a parent can fully understand, or a very empathetic person. Without them there, she might've been more calm, but with them there, there is that raw, primal fear for lives that mean more to you than your own ever will and I LOVE the scene for it.
I will say about The Incredibles, these are guided missiles designed by an evil genius that can make force fields and super advanced AI, so smart missiles with super maneuverability don't seem like much of a stretch.
but the are literally worse than any actual missile ever used that's the unrealistic part about them if he had used any actual SAM missiles they would have all been dead before the scene even starts
@@skeemnave4882 to be fair, it is used as a psychological weapon to threaten mr incredible iwth the death of his family so he might actually have more effective sams that just fly at the incoming airplane at mach 6 and hit it and thse specialized psychological weapons that fly alon a plane dramatically while you negotiate
I loved showing this video to my kids. It was quite moving seeing them crying while their favourite movie was criticised but we all learnt an important lesson about the nature of air-to-air missiles.
My grandpa was on the aircraft carrier Valley Forge during WWII. I never got to hear his stories, but I love listening to others who have been on aircraft carriers! it makes me feel closer to my grandpa
To be fair to the Dunkirk pilot landing rather than ditching it seems like most pilots did not survive ditching spitfires. Their engines are so heavy they sunk extremely quickly. Also despite appearances they glide very well so although the specific altitude in the film is not realistic the general premise of running out of fuel but still shooting down a dive bomber is not completely impossible.
This is my understanding as well. The Spitfire was known for having very good gliding characteristics and there are a few anecdotes of them coasting for many miles with damaged engines or no power. That being said, it's certainly an exaggeration that Tom Hardy, already being at such a low altitude, would have been able to turn and maneuver to shoot down the Stuka and still have airspeed and altitude left to glide elegantly to the end of the beach. Theoretically possible? Yes, maybe, at the very limits of natural physics. Not very likely though. To Jello's point, it would have made much more sense to either immediately ditch at the waterline or go in for a quick belly landing on the beach nearer the ships. But that would have required an undignified trashing of the plane, and we can all agree that the only proper way to dispose of a Spitfire is to light it up with a flare gun and stand heroically silhouetted in the flames as it burns :)
@@Thoreaux Its possible and they in fact train you to do it at flight schools but it is at the cost of a couple hundred feet. So in this guys case, unlikely he'd be able to complete a full 180, given more altitude, absolutely
@@Thoreaux When you turn a plane, you are splitting the lift the wing generates into a horizontal and a vertical component. The more you bank, the more horizontal lift is generated and the less vertical lift. Turning will also increase your angle of attack and create more drag, slowing you further. If you get too slow, air will no longer adhere to the wing and you lose all lift. That's a stall. At the altitude and speed he was flying, there's no way he could have recovered in time and he would have just nose dived. He used his last maneuver by taking out the Stuka, so he had to glide down.
A huge thank you to this fighter, pilot for participating in his video, but more importantly, for his service,. It's people like him who allowed people like us to live our lives unfettered so thanks, you're a good man!

Fun fact: the original end of ID4 had Randy Quaid's character show up in his Stearman with a missile duct-taped to the side. He then proceeds to fly into the mother ship as shown. Audience reaction was poor as it was an obvious suicide move, so they took the already finished shot of a Stearman flying slowly into the ship and changed it to an F/A-18. The miracles of CGI. If you look closely you'll see Quaid's ship jink back & forth dodging alien fire in a way unlike how a Hornet moves but consistent with how a biplane would. I hope this explains the odd physics of this scene..
@@FighterPilotPodcast I love to hear him talk, very interesting and entertaining. He could also talk about his life as a pilot and missions he did. It's obviously a subject he's passionate about.
To be fair to The Incredibles, they were guided missiles designed by a super villain. Those are probably going to be a lot better than run of the mill guided missiles.
Great video & great insight. Only slight issue is that what happened with the spitfire actually happened at Dunkirk & that there's a wealth of footage & reports on single prop planes including ww2 era gliding long distances after engine failure. Even if it's probably a little overdramatised in Dunkirk & not shot correctly
The Spitfire was a very aerodynamically clean design with an impressive glide ratio, but if you lose the engine at 500 feet as shown in the film that will maybe buy you a handful of seconds at most. At that altitude you are going to be on the ground within a minute, these planes didn't defy physics. I know there was a real Spitfire pilot that landed gear up on the beach at Dunkirk after he was hit, but pretty sure he didn't glide for an hour and shoot down a Stuka in the process.
About the spitfire that crashed on the beach rather than ditch in the sea close to the Allied troops and ships in the movie "Dunkirk" - Kenneth Branagh was setting up an actual story of a Spitfire that crashed on the beach during the evacuation and remained buried in sand for several decades afterward.
And even more to the point, that Spitfire that crashed on the beach in real life is the one IN THE MOVIE. It was recovered in the 1970s, returned to England, restored to flying order and they portrayed the action of the plane, WITH the plane. Crazy, right? The only difference is, the actual pilot didn't burn it. It sat on the beach until sand buried it.

The scene in Iron Eagle where you pointed out the clean versus dirty wings, I am surprised that you didn't point out that that the US roundels are not right either. They are on the tops and bottoms of both wings, and the fact the F-16s themselves are not USAF F-16s but IADF F-16Is.
I’m glad Independence Day got the terminology right. I remember playing with my brothers and we would have fighter jets models and I would always say “eagle 20, fox 2” or “eagle 1, fox 2”... glad I wasn’t saying nonsense hahaha
I picked up a novelization of ID4 at a 2nd hand store. In the book they mention F-15 Eagles bring flown, I'm not sure why it was changed. In real life, the F-15 Eagle was notable for possessing more than 1 Thrust to Weight Ratio so it could accelerate vertically.... most other jets including the F-18 can not. My suspicion is the screenplay was set and they changed the details without considering that.
For Independence Day, the character Russel K was originally supposed to be flying his crop duster with a missile strapped to it. That’s why his plane flies odd in the movie.
it depends a bit on the type of plane and how it breaks a part but some large peices of wreckage, slowed down by drag can ahve a higher terminal velocity than a freefalling human before deploying a chute not so much after

Even though it helped them, they are not proud of that movie, in fact, another guy that reviewed airplane movies literally said that if anybody mentions that movie, they get a $50 fine, apparently they have to buy everybody drinks and also, apparently all of their nicknames are because they did something stupid or embarrassing, so probably not "Iceman" "maverick" or anything like that.
31:00 I think he didn’t ditch bc the implication was that ditching wasn’t safe enough under the circumstances. The other pilot who was shot down chose a water landing over ditching too. I wonder if they were not high enough? Or was the process not perfected yet in 1940?
29:12 Spitfire flaps don’t partly extend, they’re either retracted or fully deployed.. & Ditching a Spit was never a great idea if you had options, they tended to flip and sink quick! I agree though, the extended glide scene was a bit silly.. In addition, the model they burned at the end could have been more accurate. Seeing the metal pole that held the prop on was obvious..
All the other pilots in Independence Day didn't have to sacrifice themselves. Russell's missile was jammed so he had to fly it in. I'm not sure there were any other ones left, it's been a while since I've seen it.
A different pilot in a different breakdown commented on the name and callsign painted underneath the canopy "it is not your aircraft", and yet on his personal photo we can see the name painted.
Dude! That hero in the plane was Tom HARDY... Bain... Venom... And a Gangsta who's name I don't recall. And he boxes... What I'm saying is Anything is possible...
26:47 - “my problem is with physics…” I stopped the play back, because I was laughing so hard. Yeah, the laws of physics, and other things movies are not too concerned about. Sir, I fully understand your feelings…
I loved Iron Eagle in the 80s, but as I got older, I realized how hokey it was. Also saw he has magic fuel and rounds - fuel goes down, then up, then down again. Not a pilot, but pretty sure the sudden loss and addition of a few thousand pounds is going to affect the flight characteristics of the bird
In terms of building tolerance to pulling g's, I'm just longing for the day that someone comes up with a roller-coaster that requires you actually wear a g-suit to ride it. Most roller-coasters max at like 4 g's, with the record being a bit over 6 g's, I believe. As mentioned here, fighter pilots will pull 9 g's (but, unlike a fighter pilot, you technically don't need to be conscious to ride a roller-coaster!)
Regarding ID4 and not enough pilots........ during the Battle of Britain the RAF was in that situation. They were losing pilots being killed, but building replacement aircraft faster than they could train pilots. To make up for this they were graduating pilots with fewer training hours.
On the Dunkirk bit, I would guess that they were going for the metaphor over reality. A damaged, knocked out war machine managing to just barely land and survive. A successful failure. E.g., a metaphor for the British military at Dunkirk
They definitely coulda made the climax of Independence Day better without sacrificing the drama. Have Russel slowly pitch the jet upwards implying with the alien weapon powering up faster. Russell goes full throttle, and the jet struggles to keep up the speed. Engines sputter, will he make it?!?! Boom yes, he does and becomes the hero!!

Top gun is too perfect for criticism. Fighter jets, motorcycles, women, hot shirtless beach volley ball all in perfect unison.
Same thing 🙌 What's going on?
Dude! That hero in the plane was Tom HARDY... Bain... Venom... And a Gangsta who's name I don't recall. And he boxes... What I'm saying is Anything is possible...
I would like to see this guy review the aviation scenes in some other military movies such as Final Countdown (1980) and Pearl Harbour.
24:20 they should have highlighted "canopy" instead of "locked"
Agreed.
Soooo you’re saying you don’t teach the Russell maneuver in Top Gun training?
26:47 - “my problem is with physics…” I stopped the play back, because I was laughing so hard. Yeah, the laws of physics, and other things movies are not too concerned about. Sir, I fully understand your feelings…
AYYYYY VINCENT AIELLO
Hahaha....I love the way he's getting all worked up....His sarcasm is awesome....
Jello is the best and so is the Fighter Pilot Podcast
Cool video, I have been working for top gun for years.
This was amazing, thank you.
"80's rock Mötley Crüe, not the horse hit in Iron Eagle... We used to beat those guys up.
Goose in Top Gun wasn't knocked unconscious, he broke his neck on the canopy.
What a great guy.
Thumbs up for the HOTAS Warthog joystick in the back.
I would love for a jet comment on the finale of Jericho.
Loved the movie Dunkirk, but yeah, I wish I could glide powerless like he does when playing WWII combat flight sims ;)
His podcast is so good
Regarding ID4 and not enough pilots........ during the Battle of Britain the RAF was in that situation. They were losing pilots being killed, but building replacement aircraft faster than they could train pilots. To make up for this they were graduating pilots with fewer training hours.
I like that Mace helmet. I was in VFA-27 2001-2005. :)
On the Dunkirk bit, I would guess that they were going for the metaphor over reality. A damaged, knocked out war machine managing to just barely land and survive. A successful failure. E.g., a metaphor for the British military at Dunkirk
In the Arnold harrier scene look like AKSU not AK47
Fun video, and I've always loved the hornet.
Iron Eagle will be my forever favourite movie no matter the flaws...
