    torque.... is simply pulling power..
    bhp is pushing power.
    high torque gives u pulling power even in top gears.
    but shooting or pushing power is always high petrol engine they are rapid in terms of acceleration {pushing in straight line}
    so petrol engines are always helpful in overtaking quickly.
    while diesel engine are better at pulling ex. trucks and buses. a diesel car will go easily on a inclined without shifting gears much while petrol cars have low torque comparatively so they surely need to shift down the gears.

      I think HP is how fast you can hit the wall. There is difference in Quick vs Fast. Quickness could be torque.!

    all depends on how the bhp produced by the engine is sent to the gearbox(gear ratios)..ideally two cars - petrol 118bhp 150nm torque(city ivtec) , diesel 118bhp, 320nm torque(s-cross 1.6). this 170nm of torque difference is well compensated by the high and free revving nature of honda..while the scross might be faster in 0-60 or 0-80.. but city will catch up easily because in diesel cars torque drop at higher rpms is quite prominent. whereas in petrol cars the torque does not drop upto that level and rpms keep on rising leading to good bhp build up at higher rpms..taking the example mentioned here of bolero.. bolero has short gears and utilises the 190nm torque to carry heavy weights and steep inclines..where as due to short gears again might not have a very high top speed..similar is the case wth autos(3 wheeler) their engines are rated at 15 bhp,20nm torque, but there gearboxes amplify the torque multifolds..thats y even in 3rd 4th gear they are only doing 30kmph or 40kmph and they cant do more than that..

      Gursimran Singh remember india is a poor country most of people doesent have money to buy fuel for speed and fun that's why everyoone asks for kitna deti ha.for example in india swift came with an engine of 1200cc producing 70 or 80 hp wheras in uk suzuki swift comes with1600 cc engine producing 135 hp.

      +Varun Tomer varun you are absolutely right bro..lekin fuel bachane ke chakar mein kai log safety se compromise kar dete hai..log swift to lete hai mileage dekh kar lekin uski built quality nahi dekhte which is very poor. mein sabhi logo k bare mein nahi keh raha, fir bhi kuch log paise hone k bawjood safety ko ignore kar dete hai.

    YOU didn't explained the role of Gear Ratio to produce Torque , plz explain it.

      In the case of gear ratio torque inversely proportional to the rpm that mean apka torque zada hone se rpm kam hoga as example when u are in 1st gear on that case u get higher torque but less rpm and in your 4th gear u have less torque and higher rpm

      Anurag Semwal as i20 has marginally better power output specs. and the ECU is different in both the cars so react differently

      Petrol in grand i10 is faster than petrol i20 .. Diesel is slower being 73bhp i20 has 88bhp Diesel engine..
