torque.... is simply pulling power.. bhp is pushing power. high torque gives u pulling power even in top gears. but shooting or pushing power is always high petrol engine they are rapid in terms of acceleration {pushing in straight line} so petrol engines are always helpful in overtaking quickly. while diesel engine are better at pulling ex. trucks and buses. a diesel car will go easily on a inclined without shifting gears much while petrol cars have low torque comparatively so they surely need to shift down the gears.
