- Exercise Iron Storm tested 1st Battalion, The Mercian Regiment this month as it takes up the role of Lead Armoured Battlegroup.
The exercise gives the Battlegroup the opportunity to come together and train in a combined arms environment.

OC Dragon Coy is absolutely spot on. There is NO substitute for ‘live’ fire training.
Come on the MOD, start properly investing in better live fire, namely urban & urban-to-rural facilities and ideally one by the coast at least. A good spread of live fire skills houses that can be used throughout the training estate would also be a very good upgrade for ‘all’ manner of units.
A few years ago the best individual, or at the very least right up there, live fire skills house burnt down, and to my knowledge (I really hope I’m wrong🙏) it’s not been replaced with anything near as good or that offered the same training opportunities that the destroyed facility had offered.
Tight now, more than ever surely, is a very important skill that all of the above need to train to operate in. This needs to be at a very high standard and as realistic as humanely possible. This can only be achieved in a live fire environment. The more comfortable someone is with a their personal weapon(s) loaded, ready and at the same time working in very close proximity with others with the same, the more focused they become on the job and the less it effects judgement etc. That takes training. Lots.
It should also mean not necessarily having to go abroad or travel to the other end of the country from camp to get too😳 🚎 🤮

Most of the equipment shown is new and very good except for the warrior which is being substituted with the boxer

Used to be done in BATUS and was a sight to see and allowed true manoeuvre, shame it's down castlemartin now with bugger all space.
The equipment now needs to be closer to home?
@@paulmcgee1867 cost saving, pure and simple, it was argued we should exercise on Russia's doorstep but we just don't have the live fire space in Europe to carry out true BG manoeuvre I guarantee the arcs for those challys are miniscule and incredibly restrictive.

It’s a Mercian led Battlegroup guys, comprising of loads of different elements including REME, RE, KRH etc
I get the attachment of other Arms to complete a Battle Group, it's the addition of another infantry formation that is odd. Unless they're running with a Battalion plus?
@@JammyDodger45 ahhh see what ya mean, I saw Mercian anti tanks, armoured recce and motors while I was there filming, mainly Fusileers dismounts as you said, I’m ex Reme so unaware of the dynamics to be honest and wouldn’t wana blag the information lol 😂 🤷🏻♂️
