I did 14 Years in T/A. It takes a high degree of motivation to hold down a full time job and family life. Then pack up your gear and go off on a Friday night till Sunday evening. After a hard weekend of little sleep then go into work Monday morning. Most of us did one or 2 weekends like that every month, plus 2 weeks camp and courses as well. Best times for me was attachment to regular units. As a T/A Cpl sometimes in command of regular troops.

We used to have regular Permanent staff attached to us and they all changed their perception of us after serving in a reserve unit. When I was attached to the regulars as a Cpl I was in charge of regular troops no problem there was nothing I hadn’t been trained for.
I enjoyed my TA days in the 90s. I came out when my eldest son was born it was to much commitment between work and family life and there wasn't really much flexibility in jobs then either. My old unit is all shut down now and an shop fitting depot I think. Your definitely right it does take a lot of motivation to do a week's work then away Friday night.
the uk deployed over 330,000 ta personnel at the start of ww2 when war was declared these troops turned up for a normal we trainging at best they did not come home for 6 years at worse some did not come home at all. all those who complain about ta training should remember the majority of said training is done by ex regulars in units and fulltime regulars at depots.
In 2020 the Reservist & TA have proven themselves key assets over the years in filling the voids that come from the modern-day demands in ever-changing commitments of our armed forces world wide whilst maintaining the high standards required to best fulfill missions on deployment and maybe a subject you should cover again as lots happening in Mali, Sudan, Kenya etc
Watching this video makes me proud to be British, i think the job these guys do for our country is fantastic, so well done to all of you.. Our TA members get just as much quality training as our regular army does.. Nice upload, thanks for the share... Carl
Sorry but no. Reservists really are severely under-trained compared to regulars. To the point that a reservist is more likely to be badly injured or killed than a regular soldier is it seems. Considering how long reservists are out there for and how long regulars are out there for, it kind of shows you a huge difference.

MR UVA appears to be on a mission. God forbid you are ever injured by an IED in theatre and taken for treatment and met by a Reserve surgeon. I guess you would prefer to bleed out waiting for a regular to arrive from the UK? The modern army cannot function without the Reserve, and this film did stress the fact that the Reserve held a pool of specialists.
Nobody is saying that we don't want reserves. Hats off to them, they're doing something. But we don't think that reserves have earned the right to call themselves soldiers. We don't think it was a good idea to have them essentially replace the roles of regulars that were laid off. We don't think they're capable enough to be there. They are seriously under-trained compared to regulars. That puts their own lives and the lives of everyone else at risk. Compared to that the government sacked of (I think it was something like 30,000 troops? Might be wrong. Been a long time) thousands of regular soldiers. Some of the deadliest soldiers in the world. It's putting people's lives at risk, it's seriously reducing the already declining military power of the UK and it's a national defence risk. And for what? To save money. To be able to pay a nice bonus to our lovely politicians. So don't misunderstand why people hate on reservists. It's not to the point that we'd reject help from one if we're injured. It's just we hate how irritating they are and wish they would just fuck off. They really are toy soldiers.
Most of the regulars who are commenting about the TA are just jealous and haven't a clue because they don't know anything about the TA yes they are some shit and then again there is some very good soldiers in the TA too. I was in the TA for 15 yrs and I couldn't give a shit what a regular thought of me but the times I was on exercise in Germany with some of the regulars they were absolutely shit and lazy but not all of them . Just remember there were a lot of TAs out in the gulf 1 and 2 and Afghan who didn't make home alive and a lot were also maimed by IEDs and didn't whinge about who's more professional just remember the TA brings in more experience from civvi street that you regulars don't know.
@@bakersmileyface a lot of TA soldiers are fitter then regulars. Regulars after basic training get idle. Also regulars get paid to for their PT sessions. TA have to take care of their own training needs on their spare time.
Full respect for every soldier of all countries. A soldier who fights for honour and sacrifice deserves respect. However, I'm a little surprised that the British give so much importance to monetary part of it.
Truth be told, The monetary part is often sold by the media.. Why would anyone do it ? Money. No, Not quite. Yes money plays a part (we all need it to pay the bills), But what often goes unsaid is the tradition, The part in history, The man standing next to you. Queen & Country (& all therein). If you rationalise that one day your time will come, Why not for a heartfelt cause. The army does equal opportunity as well, But there is risk. You sign up to that, You understand that balance. After the army, PMCs are an option, There is more money to be made- But the Army fosters a good moral standing and it's our duty to be of our word and keep up those standards.

I did get a MOD90 card saying British Army on it. They do that since the "One Army: Regular and Territorial" ad campaigns from 2005.
The original idea of the TA was to take over homeland duties while the regulars went off to fight. Due to defence cutbacks over the years that all changed.Two weeks exercising a year is not enough. In Germany in the sixties they were a joke. They didn’t know what they were doing and spent the fortnight pissing it up and having a good time. In recent years active service was a real possibility. Talk about doing it on the cheap.
This was years ago in the TA , it is now the Army reserves! They have to do the exact fitness tests as regulars now! And just because you are over weight does not mean you are unfit! I know a few overweight guys could tab and run the ass off anyone
So they get rid of thousands of some of the best trained soldiers in the world and increase the number of materialistically trained reserves. To save what? To save money? What about lives? Reservists are more likely to be injured or killed when mobilised than a regular is during the same time frame. The reduction of a regular army is going to reduce our fighting capability against other, much larger, nations. We are a small country, we've always made up for that by quality over quantity. And our army is already falling behind on technology. Sure reserves are a good idea and I respect the people that go to do it. But they're nowhere near capable enough to be sent out in lieu of the soldiers that were laid off. It was a shitty decision.

Having been in the regular army doesn't mean that you were or are an effective or a bad soldier. If you have experience and skills that can enhance the training of your Army Reserve unit then you should use them to good effect.
Watching this video made me ashamed to be British!! The likes of this glorified Dad's Army will not make one iota of a difference in Afghanistan or anywhere else for that matter. I could see that the kind of people being interviewed was in the main poor and uneducated. They come from an area of high unemployment and this situation has been prevalent for many generations. I really think they should focus on the political situation at home and not go off to far off lands to fight for a system that oppresses them. And if any fighting is required I suggest they train their sights on their real enemies which will be found at home.......

Two thirds of the troops in the Korean War ,were National servicemen, who had been called up.Also almost 400 were KIA.
Its no longer TA (unless your university OTC cadets) Reserve forces are reservists.
