I'd be happy if they just kept going with it in the city theme. I'm stoked at the new space variety, especially because they lean into fantasy and away from NASA and realism. Love that side of LEGO, but also very stoked to have sets and themes that are aimed at imagination and fantasy.

These give off a "precursor" to the galaxy squad theme feel to it. I'm thinking that the reason why red is not a color used is because they haven't met any hostile aliens yet, red might be a color for an attack or defense force.

Watching this I just realized what these reminded me of that made me like them almost instantly. 80’s kids might remember: Starcom!
This was a very, very cool line of highly detailed, well thought out sci fi toys from Coleco. I would not be surprised if they had a not so minor influence on this new Lego Space wave; the aesthetics and design style is definitely reminiscent of it.

I find the overall color palette/aesthetic to this theme to be just a little bit weak, but the designs are good. The thing I like the most is that it's hitting so many hallmarks of older space themes.
    - It's debuting a brand new color (Dark Orange), similarly to how M-Tron and Ice Planet showcased the new (at the time) Trans Neon Green and Orange colors.
    - It has the color coded astronauts with different roles, just like Classic Space and Futuron. It has little robot companions, which we also saw in Classic Space, Futuron, and Blacktron, to name a few
    - It's got modular connections with the orange hub parts. Both Blacktron lines had some modular elements. I'm trying to remember if other space themes did this.
    - And lastly, it has the characters chasing after crystals, just like Aquazone, Mars Mission, or Rock Raiders. Everyone loves to have those fancy looking little "treasure" pieces, whether it's gold, crystals, jewels, they're always a fun addition.

As a kid I remember playing Lego battles on the DS, and it used the mars mission theme for the space and alien campaigns. I was absolutely obsessed with it but by the time I was playing it mars mission had been retired for a few years so I could never get any of the sets. Now they’ve released these though and I can’t stop thinking about what kinds of dioramas I can make! Obviously it’s not exactly the same as any previous space theme but I actually quite like the more utopian, exploration/science focus this has. That also makes sense from a marketing standpoint, considering they’ve already got a sci fi line that literally has war in the name and that completely displaced space as a theme for a long time.

This is honestly a theme that got me excited again. I usually follow the progress of Lego, but more for small builds or unique parts. But this just got me excited like the old days, playing with my brother and pur classic space sets. I only got four sets, but that's more than I've gotten in any theme for over 20 years. I did get the polybag, only because I ordered it off eBay. I also got the Asteroid Discovery, Interstellar ship, and the mining mech. I even built the robot from the command rover with spare parts I had. I also swapped put the lense piece on each robot with the circular piece with the LCD eyes from the last City Spaceport theme. Gives them so much more personality.

I really hope these theme does well. The sets are awesome (ther below $40 sets are all winners, even the Polybag - only prints FTW). I have my issues with the 2 biggest sets: Space station doesn't include a 4 way junction module and worst, you can't move between the small modules - not sure how this got past the design given that all other modules have a decently sized opening (this can be remedied by removing those parts and adding a frame or future sets) and the Space crane is too big (read expensive) for the good bits it has ( I would have wanted a bigger base instead of small truck, spaceship ramp and even the cargo space ship could have been its own set rather than part of this in order to allow for a better main build). The big land vehicle is GREAT and I love it. The only issue I have here are the many stickers that are essential to its look, and saddest of all, the generic hazard stripes that could have easily been prints. Either way, great wave, and here's hoping for a second and third to give us a T junction for the modules and a huge mothership - that may or may not be buit around a 4 way junction module. Also I would love more terrain.

I kind of want to get 2 of the space base to turn turn them into one larger base, but considering the cost and risk of it not being enough to make a complete build, I’m not sure. Especially since I’d also want the lab module to connect to it, and all the other sets are just as enticing.

It would be cool to build on the space base in its open form, filling in the other half of those rooms, and then making a big cargo loading/garage area out the back for the crane to be servicing. You can put the vehicles from the other sets out there, stick the new lab structure on the side of the base, etc. They’ve definitely given all these sets a lot of potential for modularity and expansion and I’m loving it

  • @theChain120
    @theChain120 3 месяца назад

I gotta agree with the retro Lego RUclipsrs like Slugger... These still feel grounded in earth tech, like evolution of NASA or other terrestrial aeronautic aesthetics. I miss the outlandish, weird and extremely experimental designs of the 90s, when every subtheme had their own new ideas and design cues.
What I very much like is the colour palette, diverse minifigs, greatinterplay between sets, and the focus on peaceful exploration and research. It feels more like a successor to "Life on Mars" than to "Mars Mission", where everything was about conflict and combat.
What I think we're missing is the aforementioned departure from earth technology and conventional vehicle concepts, and most of all something for the extraterrestrials to DO. They are more like wild uncivilised animals rather than a sentient race of extraterrestrials.

so far im very impressed. i`m hoping they do a very big mothership that has that same Galactic explorer profile, perhaps include
some docking ports for the modules on it so you might be able to build onto it.
however, i think having it as a "classic spaceship" profile will be important.
things that would be cool to see are things that used to be typical on large ships.
    things like,
    - Small detachable side vehicles.
    - A modular body with a detachable front section which could serve as its own independent ship.
    - A large rear section or main body of the ship with a detailed interior that could be left behind and used as a portable base, possible with a few docking ports.
    - A rear mounted, or possibly front mounted bay for small ground vehicles with a ramp.

  • @Cloncurrify
    @Cloncurrify 3 месяца назад +1

The entire theme is mining based. A massive command base or massive mothership would imply a different non-mining focus to the 2024 wave (e.g. Starfleet, general exploration with no specific purpose. The classic retro vintage Space pulled this off because of the real life Space Race back then. Not sure if that ground can be re-trodden again without the theme feeling a repeat of Space Police and Blacktron. Hence why Lego made a real world activity like mining the focus. The crystals don't just power Space infrastructure, but may even provide a power source for batteries on planet Earth and explain why Earth has diverted resources to this activity)
I don't like the rovers because their scale doesn't match the space base or space station. This is probably why you feel the space base is only an outpost because it is dwarfed by the rovers. Remove the rovers and with the Space Admiral the base automatically feels bigger. The walking mecha also seemed a bit forced and unnecessary too (rip off from Aliens 1..

If they had classic minifigs and style, I'd give them all my money. Sticking to ebay vintage until then.

Props for the Subnautica Below Zero reference. It’s a LaChance shuttle.

The admiral seems to be hilding what looks like a Marshall baton !
The powercell of the jet pack gives me powercell from Subnautica vibes !
Technician halmets reminds me of 2001 A Space Odyssey's suit helmets ! Or ST Enterprise EVA suit helmet. Of course HALO or Mass Effect influence also works but their influence traces back from the same anyway.
Cute aliens give Toy Story alien toy vibes.
Damn all those influences. It's like being back in the 80s.
Robots give 80 anime vibe which fits the narrative.
Miner Mech= PRAWN suit in Subnautica. Or many other sci fy influences it draws from...
Those who designed the models played 80s/90s Space LEGO and played Subnautica it seems... They know what is good.
Energy cristal seems to be the same shape as the Magnetite outcrop in Subnautica, again...
They should make a Subnautica collection at this point...
Modular Space Station directly inspired from the Inteerstellar Endurance spacecraft, of course...
"Space train" is the official term even at Nasa to describe whet the Apollo+LEM convoy attached together is, so no problem. Jules Verne even used the term himself to describe the potential future of space travel in From the Earth to the Moon novel.
Modules not being see through on the Space Station is normal, on the regular build, one side is exposed to the exterior and it wouldn't feel realistic to have it open to vacuum... So the wall you see is the hatch inside the docking port. The module on the rover is designed to go in the middle of the train or be part of the rover (using modular construction is the get go to space travel if you want to be cheap anyway even if that module is not meant for a space ship). Even there, their approach is rather realistic.
It seems that those guys took every grievances I had with the Space LEGO collections back then and fixed those in an engaging way.
Damn I wish I was ten yo again...
The Power Bus module at the end seems totally legit interstellar travel design.
The base looks like being taken from Kerbal Space Program.
In short, that collection is KSP+Subnautica in LEGO. Seems like a banger. I hope it works.
The vriable thruster bell makes that spaceship look very nice and sleek.

It mostly reminds me of mars mission but it definitely shares a lot with mass effect’s look

The Admiral fig confused me. I assumed he was an alien and possibly an enemy even though of course this is a totally peaceful theme. Sadly.

I think the price difference may have something to do with less demand in Europe because US economy seems to be doing better at the moment. It could also be that these themes aren't as popular here but I doubt it. Also 85 USD is about 77 EUR.
