- This is the speech Captain Kirrahe gives to his troops before the raid on Saren's labs.
"You all know the mission, and what is at stake.
I have come to trust each of you with my life -- but I have also heard murmurs of discontent. I share your concerns. We are trained for espionage; we would be legends, but the records are sealed. Glory in battle is not our way.
Think of our heroes; the Silent Step, who defeated a nation with a single shot. Or the Ever Alert, who kept armies at bay with hidden facts. These giants do not seem to give us solace here, but they are not all that we are.
Before the network, there was the fleet. Before diplomacy, there were soldiers!
Our influence stopped the rachni, but before that we held the line! Our influence stopped the krogan, but before that, we held the line!
Our influence will stop Saren; in the battle today, we will hold the line!"

This speech is the hype creator. From here on the damn game just turns more and more awesome.
It's so good. The only thing I think could've made it better is if a more energetic species like Krogan or Human said it. Sure, the slow monotonous presentation fits a salarian black ops soldier, but something about the way humans do calls to battle just gets the blood pumping way more. Ya know?
@@shadowofhawk55 idk, the fact that salarian, clearly no made for frontal assault, hold the line frontally against Krogan and Geth that not only outnumbered them overwhelmingly but are also the two most resilient and war-oriented species in space (excluding reapers), make it even better for me
Honestly that speech is on par with Hackett's final speech from ME3 as the best in ME imo

This might be the best speech given by a tertiary npc in video game history.
Games are plagued with overacting, but this was legit a greatly delivered speech.
Captain Kirrahe is NOT tertiary NPC, he's secondary one!

@@guifire9747 Ever since I learned that Jenkins' middle name began with L, I've always wondered if it was a deliberate reference. Mass effect 1 came out in 2007 (I think) and Leeroy Jenkins was 2005-2006, so it's certainly possible.

True, I've had trouble with that for a while.
I'm playing through this game for the first time right now. And when that thunderclap hit at that last "We will hold the line!" I wanted a dialogue option for "BUT NOW I WANT TO GO ON YOUR SUICIDE MISSION TOO YOU FUCKING FANTASTIC FROG MAN"
You could say I'm a little late to the party but I completely agree. Salarians have been my favourite race since my experiences with Kirrahe in ME1 and ME3. There is even a mention of him from Mordin in ME2 which was pretty cool!
From this scene till the end of the game the first Mass Effect becomes one of the best videogames of all time, The Virmire-Ilos-Citadel missions are so well done.
That why i always do Virmire last after every assignement is finished, to just go through those 3 back to back then straight to ME2

I know it's just a game but when I first played it that speech made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

I think people should never get Thane killed during The suicide mission for 2 reasons
1. he is awsome
2. kirahe dies protecting the slarian counsler if Thane is not there
3. Every squad member need to either stay alive or die in a badass/ memorable way (like Thane, Mordin, Legion and even Virmire's victim)

@@dallarian8687 Jacob can stay alive during a standard playthrough, he only die if the palyer messed up (either by coming to the suicide mission ill-prepared or putting Jacob in a job he can't handle, or by ignoring his mission in ME3 until it's too late)
You need to help out his team by doing 4 things in order:
1- Screw up thier communication triangulation thing
2- shoot down some sort of dish thing
3-Go to the refueling station and destroy the sentry bots
4-When prompted about the alarm you need to disable it only and not trigger the alarm near the salarian teams
If done in this order he will stay alive =)
@Mike Jones it is, just finished ME1 again. You can see him and 2 or 3 guys of his team on board of Normandy in hangar after this mission. Sorry for my eng.
Actually, just blowing up the bots and their fuel tank is enough to save him.
Yes, only third objective necessary to save captain, otherwise squad member who joins him will radio captain fell. Coming back for previous objectives will not change failure of inaction into success like doing a paragon action will not get rid of renegade points.

That was one of the most defining moments in Mass Effect history, and I am really pleased to say that it's also one of my top favorite speeches in any form of entertainment (i.e. movies, TV, books, VG, etc.)
in my opinion, THE defining moment of the Mass Effect trilogy will forever be the suicide mission.
Meeting Sovereign on Virmire and finding out what's really going on will always be the defining moment for me.
Same as OP, but all of the moments mentioned by other users are like too awesome to be true.
It's been years since I played them but I still rember this speech. So well written and well delivered. It's actually moving and makes me want to do all I can to ensure their success. He clearly cares deeply about protecting the innocent and that which is bigger than himself.

awesome speech, in the beginning of it i was thinking "oh yeah, no he will try to say something emotional, pfff... good luck bro" and when he sayed that today they will hold the line I get chills and thought "ok, that game is awesome"

This speech really drives home that for all the heroes and legends out there, the ones who mattered most were the unsung everymen/women/etc on the front lines.
They might not have been insanely skilled operatives, or ace pilots, or exposed to mythical powers, or otherwise singular forces of nature. But when it mattered most, and they were the only ones available, they chose to risk their lives -- even willingly give them up -- because someone needed to step up and give the galaxy a fighting chance.
They were the ones who, as Kirrahe himself said, held the line.

I am playing the Mass Effect games, all 3 individually in order as the Legendary Edition(Gamepass) for the 1st time ever. Yes 15 yrs later. I just witnessed this scene.

This is my second favorite speech :) "Not one more" was my favorite moment, in the 2nd game.
I just played the entire mass effect series over this past week, and I think this was the best part of the experience.
This speach still gives me chills. I gave this speech to some of my soldiers when I deployed to Afghanistan before we touched down in country almost 9 years ago.
It was totally out of context, made no sense, and left everyone generally confused but I found out 2 of the new guys were Mass Effect fans so it was worth it lol

My favourite part of this speech is the way his model clearly does not have animated legs and just clearly slides along the ground
His words together with the music made this such an epic moment in such an epic game. I got really pumped for this mission after hearing this.

This definitely surprised me way back in '07. BioWare is obviously known for getting phenomenal voice work for their games, but this speech here the writing, not to mention the delivery and the gravitas in his voice- its just fantastic.

One of the top 10 moments in the whole series!!! "WE HELD THE LINE!"
For most of my first playthrough I greatly looked down upon the Salarians as honorless cowards that relied on their sharp intellect and wit to be their only saving grace, yet never even shown in action.
But through the stories such as The League of One, their codex regard and the interaction with these infiltrators was one fo those rare turning points in opinion, an impressive feat for a game to have on a vet.
After this scene I was cursing BioWare for not allowing us a Salarian party member.
The most uplifting speech I never understood. ^^

I remember I left the game on for a while and made myself something to eat. When I came back the music had stopped and Kirrahe was just standing there. I was surprised no one left

i absolutely love this speech :D .. also, i love how Mordin Solus in ME2 refers to Kirrahe and how he liked working with him in the salarian STG, but always thought of him as "a bit of a cloaca", and makes a comment regarding his habit of holding speeches and using the expression "hold the line" constantly. ^^
This man is the one I will always rescue. Regardless of who I send with him.
Like Mordin Solus says in ME2: "Allways loved his battle speeches. Hold the line!"
