There's a number of "Champions" that are waiting for a seat in motorsports but sometimes it's a struggle. There's a debate that "Champions" from other series do not translate into good F1 drivers though. Only 3 have in decade-ish have been successful. Gasly, Leclerc and Russell.

I feel bad for people in the Alpine Academy. If any of the F1 teams wants someone to join their driver development program it would be very hard for them to say no. Thus, any driver that Alpine approaches is kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. Saying yes and getting the support provided by the team makes it easier to rise up through the junior series, but saying yes also means you probably won't get an F1 ride with Alpine. As we've seen with Piastri that uncertainty about when or even if Alpine Academy drivers will be promoted can leave the driver wondering about their career path going forward.
@@thelittleowl1 They are probably salty, but the Piastri sage does pose a genuine question: Why spend money on developing a driver when you can just buy an already developed one?

What a joke. Alpine needs to seriously take a look at the upper management of this organization. I feel for Piastri especially since they immediately started slandering his integrity.
2 years at Williams and then a seat at Alpine? That's laughable for a man who has the potential to rise to a top team quickly in F1. McLaren is probably one of the best possibilities for a rookie at present. I can't see what Piastri did wrong here.
Even later on now, rewatching this video, Webber is a genius. Oscar is probably going to be Nr. 1 driver for Mclaren, who is really likely going to win the WCC this year (2024). Also yes, Piastri is an incredible driver, a WDC in the making.
awesome video, looking forward to seeing how Piastri does. I will also be very surprised if anything like this happens in the near future again if ever
For all the 'inventing' f1 media does to create drama, a look behind the curtain at some good old fashion administrative oversight/incompetence still comes out on top. More transparency, less contrivance. Let the sport speak for itself.
Worst thing for Oscar is he's really in a rock and a hard place now before he even starts his rookie season... as you said, this whole mess will affect how teams look at him so if he does poorly with McLaren, he may never get a seat again; he pretty much has to come out firing on all cylinders and be able to sustain that for at least the majority of the season.
As of commenting this, Alonso and Piastri couldn't of made a better move. Getting a smudge on their relationship with Alpine is the biggest trade-up I've seen, avoiding the tractors they put out this year. Unbelievable luck for them both.
Not only is he a great driver - he looks like friggin Nostradamus after Austria, Silverstone and Hungary 2023. Not so many joke memes about leaving Alpine now ...
Honestly, hope this raises enough eyebrows so that drivers that think of driving for them will think twice before signing that contract. This was unacceptable from them, trying to juggle both talents like that and ending up with none is a fitting end to the story.
You mentioned Nuvolari and I though... HOW HAVE YOU NOT DONE A VIDEO ON HIM YET? He's a legend that demolished drivers on way more powerful machinery in the 30's. We need your take on it.
If you take a closer look at the article about Piastri being offered to Mclaren in case they need a driver, you'll see that it was released in March before the season even started. Honestly, the more information that becomes known, the less inappropriate Piastri's response to all of this seems. Szafnauer can talk all he wants about loyalty but every person who follows F1 even a little bit knows damn well that teams aren't that loyal to their drivers... and Szafnauer and the other teams know it, too. Drivers without a contract don't owe teams anything, especially when the team are the ones that put themselves in that situation in the first place. I sympathize with Piastri, being jerked around by Alpine who want to keep him on the hook while they take their time deciding what they want to do with their other drivers. The guy wanted to take the next step and found a team willing to give him the chance. Then Alpine turns around and announces him as a driver for next season when *they don't even have a contract signed.* AND without even discussing it with him first! What else is Piastri to do but immediately correct the misinformation put out by Alpine? The paddock may talk, but with how the situation unfolded I think most people rightfully understand that Alpine completely botched the whole situation, and I really doubt any team is going to look negatively upon Piastri in the future because of this... especially if he proves himself a worthy driver.
@paper plane alpine did NOT give him a contract, that was the whole point! He had no contract for 2023! And Alpine were busy courting an extension for Alonso. Of course Piastri went looking elsewhere!
@paper plane Except THEY DIDN'T. Piastri says they didn't. Webber says they didn't. The Contract Review Board says they didn't. The only ones who are saying they did are Otmar and Rossi, and they're proven fucking liars in this scenario.
Piastri is talented; if he performs, other team will come calling, Alpine paid his junior career and showed what he can do; Alpine dropped the ball in terms of contract and rightfully the CRB ruled in Piastri favour
OK correct me if I am wrong, but piastri got the mclaren reserve role when Daniel tested positive for covid, on March. lando had his tonsillitis situation before Monaco, so late May.
I may not be first but Oscar was in 2021. It’s crazy what happened in the span of a month regarding him. I’m interested to see what will happen next year with him and Lando
And now he is killing it with McLaren giving the Red Bulls a run for there money. Or Red Bull sometimes beating Lando. McLaren with him and Lando are fun to watch again
It’s very clear Alpine tried to save face here, but the first mistake they made was signing Ocon to that ridiculous contract in June of 2021 probably thinking Oscar had another year in F2 and Zhou would win the Championship ,,then they could give Oscar a reserve in 2023 and then re evaluate in 2024..but after Silverstone in July of 2021 Oscar took over F2 and never looked back…Although Zhou was an Alpine JR as well so idk what they where gonna do…I can’t remember all the details with Zhou
Because it turned out Alpine didn't have a contract with him and he was 100% justified in searching elsewhere, if he does well in F1 (more likely than not), I don't think people will hold this against him. If anything, I think this looks bad on Alpine's part, and might make drivers think thrice before they agree to join that team. They have a decent car this season, but this whole Piasco, plus the fact that Ricciardo and Alonso both left when they could have easily stayed is suspicious to many people. Couple that with Prost's comments after he left the team, and there does seem to be a lot of smoke indicating at least some amount of fire.
Bunch of people already asked, but here's one more. When are we getting a Drugovich video? Brazil has been absent of success in this class of racing for a long time, having him as a representative of our country doing so well is amazing.
I was glad to see a Brazilian driver doing well in a prominent formula series again. It seems weird there hasn't been one in F1 for years and Indycar only has Helio Castroneves (who is 47 I think). I was wondering where all the good young Brazilian drivers had gone! I hope Drugovich gets a shot at F1 but if he doesn't I'd be perfectly fine with him coming to the US. He's a really good driver and Brazilians have won more Indycar races than anyone except for Americans.
@@BiggieTrismegistus Lack of incentive, relevancy and not having $$$ behind these drivers are some of the reasons who come to mind for not having young drivers in F1 these last few years. But, as you said, a lot of brazilian drivers end up finding success somewhere else, like in Indycar, with Castroneves and Kanaan, Nascar, Di Grassi in Formula E and WEC, Nasr in IMSA.
My anger about the situation is with McLaren. They did this contract with Piastri a week before Riccardo put out his statement about being committed to them until the end of 2023. There's a number of "Champions" that are waiting for a seat in motorsports but sometimes it's a struggle. There's a debate that "Champions" from other series do not translate into good F1 drivers though. If you look at previous winners only not all have been successful in the sport or even getting a seat. Hulkenberg, Maldonado, Grosjean, Palmer, Vandoorne, Schumacher. Only 3 have in decade-ish have been successful. Gasly, Leclerc and Russell.
Ikr, Rossi compares putting him in Williams like Russel and Leclerc in Alfa, at least the Merc and Ferrari got them a seat the year after winning their F2 titles, and not waste his talent with a glorified reserve role with training program then bitch about the costs, if they were spending that much already training him might as well buy out Latifi's seat since they were putting him there anyway
@@trebm3 You know, Drugovich deserved a seat but he wouldn't get any next year, this is sad.
And also that they weren’t going to give him a full seat until no earlier than 2025.
Oscar Pastry is such a sweet driver
Excited to see Eclair and Pastry in 2023
@@kenalba5641 *chef kiss*
Get out.
Freaking burst out laughing at the "Geography NOOOOOO"
I’d have thought Otmar would know a thing or 2 about how there is no loyalty in formula 1
Love how you call him "pastry" every other time 😂
Watching this now and hearing josh call alonsos move to Aston a “bad career move” 😂
Here after Oscar's first podium for Mclaren at the Japan Grand Prix, seemingly a double podium for Mclaren with Lando P2. Oscar is one to look out for and I'm so glad Alpine lost big on this one
I do hope oscar does well, the heat he's gonna get next year because of alpine and mclaren's actions is gonna suck because he was just trying to secure a drive
This is far & away the best video explaining this whole saga. You can't lump any blame on Oscar for doing the right thing by his own career. Best of luck to him in the McLaren next year
The "alonzo bad carrer move" and "mclarens best days being behind them aged like milk.
Searched for the comment. Lol
watching this after oscar has a contract for at least the 2026 season and his first win feels nice
Mad man actually uploaded, impressive
Stoffel Vandorne was actually good in his rookie season. He was just there at the wrong time the car was running with a GP2 engine and he was paired with 2 time world champion Fernando Alonso who is not a easy lad to be with. He wa whining all through the season where Stoffel worked with the team for a solution.
@VERY EVIL PERSON FROM ILLUMINATI poor stoffel has been a very unlucky boy since winning gp2 until finally winning the FE title this summer
Eh. Alonso destroyed him regardless. You can whine all you want as long as you bring in results.
@@seanonraet8327 I still have no idea just how important a Formula E title is when every race is just basically Monaco.
@@GloomGaiGar - yeah well Alonso also was always given a better package than Vandoorne. Wasn’t even given the machinery to fight with. It’s only natural that Alonso crushed him every race. 🤷🏼♂️
That's what happens when you overhype overrated drivers. Happened with Capelli in the 80s, happened with Vandoorne, happened with Mick Schumacher..
This whole saga should make junior drivers think twice before signing with Alpine. They simply have no functioning path into F1 under their banner.
if I were a mechanic I'd be pretty wary too, I'd be wondering what else they're behind in......
Much better to sign with McLaren along with every other young driver, right? :D
hearing alpine may now close their academy cus of how salty they were.
@@thelittleowl1 They are probably salty, but the Piastri sage does pose a genuine question: Why spend money on developing a driver when you can just buy an already developed one?
Here after a year and a half and he has not disappointed
Love your videos Josh! Waiting for the Nyck de Vries and Felipe Drugovich sagas as well, Drugovich just took the F2 title while in the pitlane, amazing win!
drugovich signs as an aston development driver.
Watching this after Mclaren's p2-p3 finish in Japan. I think he chose the right team.
Watching this after Piastri's win in Hungary feels... interesting.
I couldn’t agree more. I’m also watching this video on the day after his race win. Piastri made the right decision.
I hadn’t watched Geography Now in years and totally caught me off guard
What a joke. Alpine needs to seriously take a look at the upper management of this organization. I feel for Piastri especially since they immediately started slandering his integrity.
Aged so well that I could get drunk off it.
It surprises me that Oscar Piastri was never given a Free Practice seat during race weekend. Only young drivers test is the only thing he did
Great video, If the kid does well in his first year ( and i hope he can ) and holds his own against Norris. I think every team will want to sing him.
2 years at Williams and then a seat at Alpine? That's laughable for a man who has the potential to rise to a top team quickly in F1. McLaren is probably one of the best possibilities for a rookie at present. I can't see what Piastri did wrong here.
2:31 Ah yes, the young and talented upcoming f1 rookie, Oscar Pastry🥐
This saga deserves an Oscar (pun somewhat intended).More entertaining than anything I've seen on tv or film.
And the Oscar for Best Sporting Drama goes to... The Piasco.
@@goodhorsehymn drive to survive having a field day.
Even later on now, rewatching this video, Webber is a genius. Oscar is probably going to be Nr. 1 driver for Mclaren, who is really likely going to win the WCC this year (2024).
Also yes, Piastri is an incredible driver, a WDC in the making.
I had been following this story from when it broke but this is a whole new and amusing take on it. Excellent humor and great story telling!
Been following you since you were even at 10k subs, happy to see how far you came Josh!
awesome video, looking forward to seeing how Piastri does.
You probably need to do another video on Oscar after his win.
Worst thing for Oscar is he's really in a rock and a hard place now before he even starts his rookie season... as you said, this whole mess will affect how teams look at him so if he does poorly with McLaren, he may never get a seat again; he pretty much has to come out firing on all cylinders and be able to sustain that for at least the majority of the season.
agreed but at least McLaren is giving him that chance. unlike Alpine.
@@jfv65 true but still, one hell of a place to be
oh wow, i did not expect a Geography Now intro here. amazing.
Alpine lost all three of their top juniors. Lundgaard went to Indy, Zhou went to Alfa, and now Piastri went to McLaren.
They’re deep into the Jack Doohan basket now, I wonder how they’ll manage to fuck that up too
@@MaCcAM40a3 Yeah. Don't forget the F3 champion. He'll be in F2 next year as well. Alpine will lose him as well.
@@MaCcAM40a3 and he hasnt even earnt a seat imo. give him another year.
He is doing hella good, i will always remember japan 2023
Bloody love the quality of this vids man. So well put together
Honestly, hope this raises enough eyebrows so that drivers that think of driving for them will think twice before signing that contract. This was unacceptable from them, trying to juggle both talents like that and ending up with none is a fitting end to the story.
Oscar should have replied to the McLaren tweet with: I'm Oscar Piastri and I approve of this message 😆
The @geographynow title being featured was just top shelf. Another one of my favorite channels.
Comparing Otmar to Dennis Nedry has me dead
Ironically… like Nedry
Josh continues to make the best f1 content
You mentioned Nuvolari and I though...
HOW HAVE YOU NOT DONE A VIDEO ON HIM YET? He's a legend that demolished drivers on way more powerful machinery in the 30's. We need your take on it.
If you take a closer look at the article about Piastri being offered to Mclaren in case they need a driver, you'll see that it was released in March before the season even started. He wasn't offered when Lando got ill, he was offered when Daniel got Covid during the pre season testing. I think the offer would have still stood in case Lando was unable to race
Josh, you should do a vid about Pukekohe and it's rich history. It's closing this year, but played host to the NZGP in the 60s and 70s and helped to put guys like Bruce, Hulme, and Amon on the map.
Many happy memories watching the V8s there in the early to mid 2000s
@@MajesticDemonLord I'm a Yank, and I got into the V8s over the pandemic. I thought the race this past weekend was great, and the final podium ceremony was awesome. Fitting that the Gizz won with another phenomenal late race pass, and you could tell how much it meant to him. I remember him saying that watching Murph race there when he was a kid is what made him want to race V8s.
@@salkdhfpoahergpoahre1534 Watching Murph when he was in the championship fight in 2002/2003 absolutely sending it round Puke was amazing. Glad you enjoy the V8s, they give a similar vibe to the BTCC, but there's something about the bigger gruntier engines that adds to it.
@@MajesticDemonLord Yea just seems to be one of the last touring car series that's managed to hold onto it's identity. Racing's great, the cars are sweet, and seems like there's always a chance for a surprise like Best and Randle putting it on the front row at the Bend. I've penciled a trip to Bathurst on my calendar for next year, really hoping it all comes together.
I would rather say it's 50-50 at this point, Piastri with his impatience, and Alpine with their incompetence.
@paper plane Just you wait, if Piastri comes in and has a debut season like a Lewis Hamilton, he will have every team under the sun trying to sign him
@paper plane alpine did NOT give him a contract, that was the whole point!
@paper plane pretty sure he has had more success than lewis in his junior career
Josh, your title cards are not passé. They are one my most favourite things about your videos. It also helps that your taste in music is on point 👌.
Piastri is talented; if he performs, other team will come calling, Alpine paid his junior career and showed what he can do; Alpine dropped the ball in terms of contract and rightfully the CRB ruled in Piastri favour
fast forward to present day: race winner in a great car
Well i think he has proven Mclaren right!
That Geography Now reference is gold

That geography now video fucking killed me

That Geography Now! intro caught me off guard
We need more teams in f1 there are so many talented drivers without drives
OK correct me if I am wrong, but piastri got the mclaren reserve role when Daniel tested positive for covid, on March. lando had his tonsillitis situation before Monaco, so late May.
Yes you are right
I may not be first but Oscar was in 2021. It’s crazy what happened in the span of a month regarding him. I’m interested to see what will happen next year with him and Lando
And now he is killing it with McLaren giving the Red Bulls a run for there money. Or Red Bull sometimes beating Lando. McLaren with him and Lando are fun to watch again
its amazing how people in the future would look back at this saga, and we're here living/being a part of it/witnessing it firsthand lmao
I cannot tell if this is on purpose but it sounds like you are saying pastry. Great video.
Probably the one who can challenge Max in the future.
That geography now reference was unexpected
Great video as always, love your work!
thanks for the deep dive man, there was a lot of stuff i wasn't aware of involving the situation. though i must say alpine did treat piastri...shit.

hell yeah, i am happy Piatri drives for mclaren now 🧡 and how he drives 🤩 completely worth the drama 🔝
Little did he know, pastry would soon win the Hungarian gp just over a year later
Pietro Fittipaldi is the closest we've got, and the guy has been desperate to get a hold of some juicy sponsors to secure a seat with a team.
They humiliated him and made him look like an idiot. Yes he hasn't performed well and hasn't lived up to expectations. But no one deserves to be treated that way.
Did mclaren make Daniel post that or did Daniel do it on his own to try and boost his chances of keeping the seat?
