  • This story was created in a workshop organized and led by StoryCenter (www.storycenter.org), in collaboration with Sahiyo: United to End Female Genital Cutting (sahiyo.org).
Severina was educated by Catholic nuns in northern Kenya. During a school break, she returned to her Samburu community, where she was forced to undergo female genital mutilation. Her memories of the experience are deeply painful, and she questions why this tradition is allowed to continue, in the name of preserving culture.
