- Door frame hook
This is by far the most common but there are a few things you need to know about it. #1 They are fantastic for the quick and easy door frame setup. They use physics to attach to your door frame and mount securely. #2 They are also relatively inexpensive to purchase and have multiple grip positions. The number one downside is the stability. If you have much of a swing at all doing pull-ups this could come right off the door frame. Also, you will want to make sure it will fit your style of door, for instance it has to hang on a side the door isn't on. It can also leave some wear marks over time even though there are some pads. Keep that in mind.
- Door frame screw in
This is another cheap option, can be installed in nearly every door frame, and is extremely stable. It can even be removed if needed. Another huge advantage this bar has is you can always keep it up and still close your door. This may be one of the only options if that's what you are looking for. The very obvious and glaring downside is it will leave permanent holes. This is a great option for kids though because it is so stable, and if they swing on it at all they won’t end up on their back.
- Door frame quick attach
Duonamic has also solved a fantastic problem with their quick connect pull-up station called the ..... The best part about this product is it's so small, quick to setup and the perfect travel pull-up station! It can hook to nearly every door frame and easily fits in a suitcase or use at home! Since they are little straps you can also easily hook up your favorite holds. It's a little different than a pullup bar since they are handles that move, which can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for. They are really strong, but again, keep in mind this it not great if you do a lot of swinging with your pullups.
- Permanent In Ground or Garage Station
Lastly if you are looking for a more permanent pull-up station or one you can use in your garage or outside you may want to go another route. We have a video on how we built a pullup and hang station that we used often for our training - we will leave that link below. You could also mount some 4x4s in the backyard and put a bar across them or make it a salmon for a dual purpose obstacle in the backyard. Obviously the downside here can be it's much more permanent and can generally cost more depending on how you do it.
- Standalone and Wall Mounted
Others like stand up stations or wall mounted stations! For a certain use case either not being able to have anything screwed into walls or damaging trim the stand-alone stations can work great. Otherwise, if you want a stable options that is more permanent a wall mounted option can also be great for a home-gym feel.

@Chong Li I have a screw one into the door frame, I suggest it as it is super stable+ the door frame cant come off
Which type fits your needs best? I would say my preference is a screwed in model because of the stability of it if that's an option.
Yes! Totally agree. That'd be my first choice if it fits people's needs for their home
What if your door frame isn't sticking out? Like cemented over?
I’m not exactly sure what you were referring to, but can you use a screwed in one? Maybe standalone?
my man just did 1000 pullups just to show the diffrences
Nope. Those were all pull-ups. Good training for my ninja warrior career 💪💪
@CALICOTV301 you be mad cause you cant do a pull up 😂

People really have door frames without a door. Can't relate.
😂 pocket door
My house has many door frames without doors. They lead into other rooms
A.J London do you have trim on the doorways?
A.J London you may need to go with a standalone system or one that screws into the wall
lol word.
This video was helpful and I just found a cheap $25 bar at Target. I cut the cardboard from a box of cereal and put it on the spots of my door frame to keep it from damaging. Try it out guys
Great find! Thanks for sharing. Glad the review helped!
The second bar you showed can be locked in with screwed in metal brackets that it slides down into.
The old P90x bar was that style and it makes them much safer and sturdier while still being very easy to take off and put back up.
Leaves 8 screw holes above the door if you remove it later but that's it. Highly recommend for anyone who is 200 plus pounds.
Good suggestions here 👍
Everytime I use one of these I face my inner fear that the door frame is gonna break and then my knee caps.
Yeah I can see that. I almost always recommend putting a pillow under you just in case. It’ll help some

Woohoo! My husband doesn’t think we can install one of these into our old house. I want to prove him wrong. I think our best option is the one that needs to be drilled into the frame. Plus it was so fun to see you and your son swinging around on that kind. Weeeee! Thank you!!!
You bet. Glad it helped!
Wish I saw this video sooner. I already bought a pull-up bar to install on my wall.
It's very good but this video would've saved me so much trouble 😅

@@BackyardNinjaKids thank you for the boost! and the video!!
Every little bit helps!!
Cool video. Also for those people who are tall over 6'4, the door pullup system may not work, your feet will be dragging on ground. You may wanna get that last system, that screws into wall
Agreed. Or bend your knees for a combo and workout 😉💪
Backyard Ninja Kids just look at Devon Larrat
I'm 6ft and I have to bend my knees to be able to get a pullup, still better than nothing though.
RUclips just recommended this video. I’m glad I watched it. Very helpful.
awesome to hear!
Something else to consider as you’re comparing options is height. I’m a tall guy and if I were to use the handles option, I would have to be in an L-sit position if I wanted to get something close to full range of motion during the workout
That is a great point! I'm only 5'6" so I didn't think of that aspect. Thanks for pointing that out
That's also something to consider about bars that are screwed into doors. They aren't as high as the ones you hang into the door.
TOP TIP: If your trim starts getting chipped or dented put some slippers over the ends. Have had no problem over 2 years :D
Slippers? I wanna get one of these but I don’t want to damage anything
@@n0gginb0nker87 well if you don't do big kipping pull-ups like cross fit or very explosive pull ups and use you slippers or something of the like you will be fine! 👍🏼
Sorry if I sound dumb, but what are slippers? I’m sure you don’t mean the footwear lol. I remember people talking about using towels. I don’t want to mark up my trim, and honestly, I have mental images of me trying this and the trim coming completely off. I’m thinking maybe everyone has that fear in the beginning
@@n0gginb0nker87 haha I do indeed mean the footwear! I know it sounds strange however the shape of them allows them to be slipped on (excuse the pun) the ends of the bar that touches the frame. Also because of the material it softens the pressure between that and the door frame.
You are correct though a towel would work however it is not as easy to slip on as slippers are 👌🏻.
I’m glad! I train on my pull-up bar every day!!
👍 good job!
The best video about this topic. I think ill buy the green ones. Nowadays there is also a package. It comes with gymnastics rings . I am sure it will be good. Thanks for the help 😊
Thanks Scott, for the 2nd bar you demonstrated, I see the heavy duty brackets that allow swinging as you mentioned; I can't find a pull up bar with these heavy duty brackets--just ones with the small circles which can't hold up much, thanks
The screw in alone would be huge. Do you actually plan to swing from it?
Wow, excellent video. Short, concise, sincere and even has the time to add extra info for those interested. Definitely helped me deciding what kind of pull up bar I want. 10/10
Great to hear. Glad the video helped. Which pull up bar did you go with?
@@BackyardNinjaKids aired g
There's also tension pull-up bar. Kind of like 1:55 but have thick rubber caps as the ends, just screw the shaft so it push into the walls really tight, no crew holes or brackets needed. Some even come with brackets for permanent placement. I put my in the hallway, give a bit more room than doorway.
Yes, thanks for mentioning that. I recently came across those. Does it stay pretty tight? I need to pick one up to try it out
@@BackyardNinjaKids I put mine higher than my reach because I like to jump up to grab the bar. So I would say real tight.
Nice. Thanks again for sharing

Trying to do negative pullups on the doorway pullup bar was damaging the wood so I was left with little choice but to get the Rogue Mil pullup station. Love it! Using it with Rogue and Gornation rings, weight vest and dip belt.
That shouldn't damage the wood any more than any other pull up
@@asdfasdfuhf Jumping up there to begin at the top position put a lot of stress on the bar's two contact points. The foam had also begun to wear out. The wood is probably pretty soft as well. The Rogue Mil Pullup station is amazing though. I have since backed off pullups due to golfer's elbow but have been rowing on the Erg at the gym several times weekly.
Those on the left at the thumbnail are very interesting .
Excellent video. Useful information and always straight to the point. I had already purchased the first version and totally agree with your assessment. After seeing your video I'm considering also getting the set you recommended for travel. Thanks.

I stumbled across your channel looking for gym equipment reviews... You are very well spoken and comfortable in front of a camera. I have no doubt if you continue to do review and workout videos you will capture a big audience (especially now with everyone trapped inside). You seem very knowledgeable about kinseology and the underpinnings and it shows you know what you are talking about. If you made more videos interacting one on one with the viewer you have at least one viewer who would be interested in watching.
Nice comment. Sad the creator hasn’t seen it yet.
one thing to consider do not kip or swing when doing pull ups its a waste of your time and energy because it is very ineffective at working the muscles of the back. Just do proper pull ups folks.
Yes, agree 100%!!
I make sure to mention that stuff for others though, especially if kids are around and will jump up on the bar.

I might be a little late to this. I was wondering how the door does not break or crack once you start doing pull-ups on the bar
It could, but I’ve never had any issues and have done many 1000s of pull-ups on door frames. I weight 155lbs
This video was very informative and I will look back at this video when I'm able to get one.
👍 I'm glad it was helpful!! Thanks
Those were good pull ups. You arched your back and then pulled your chest to the bar. I am working on doing more of these pull ups.
A great video that's helpful and informative. By the time I saw this I'd already purchased the Gold's Gym pull-up bar set with arm straps.
We should be mounting pullup bars in HALLWAYS. We'd have a lot more height to work with than a door frame. All that is needed is steel pipe (cheap) and bases that can be anchored to the studs of each wall. Even better, span 2 studs with a thick piece of plywood. And mount each plate so it has some vertical support, say 1' tall for each plate. That should be rock solid.
Thank you for the clear explanation. There was one thing I didn't understand though - the door frame options - when you're pulling up won't you have to hold back a bit so that your head doesn't hit the top of the door frame? And won't that be awkward to do?
Maybe just a bit, but not as much as you’d think depending on your door frame size
I don't know if you are still answering comments but I will throw mine out anyway. My nephew is starting to work out and he wants a pull-up bar. I guess my concern is if I use the first one you showed, will that add too much weight to the trim around the door? Will that pull on or break the trim?
Of course I'm still answering 👍 That's actually what it is designed for. That said, I usually recommend putting a pillow under kids just to be safe. I hope that helps
@@BackyardNinjaKids Ah, OK. I take it the pillow is there just in case they slip off and fall or the device slips off as well. Thank you . Extremely helpful.
Exactly. Glad it helped!
You've answered a lot of my questions. Thank you.
The hook around one that you first showed has the advantage for me in that I am 184cm tall. In fact would like to have more height. But really like the hook around because it is much taller. Another thing you did not consider was different hand positions, including wide grip, which are much more difficult.
1:16 I only knew 2 types and the other one seems to sketchy, I may find it in the rest of the video
Yup, pros and cons to all of the options.
Put thick socks on the spot where it would damage the door trim.
Yup that's a great tip 👍
I did that and it slipped and now I have broken arm ...
Uriel Soriano damm
Left and right sides only! Not the part on the top back of the door trim!
That "ding!" sound at the intro can be heard kilometers away.
Whoops 😂🤦♂️
I put felt on the support to protect my wooden trim boards.
Sticky felt.
Thank you
One other type are the door frame style that utilize wedges instead of screws. These are easily put in place and removed without putting screw holes in your door frame.
You still can't kip or swing, but the really adjustable height has other benefits... using rings and climber slings, you can do ring pushups, dips, pullups very quickly and easily
Whats the name of it?
I have tried one after making this video and it didn’t work as well in my opinion. Started slipping down
Great stuff!

Is there not a huge risk of these yanking out the door frame molding? Especially with the clamp ones.
There’s definitely a chance. Since it’s pulling it straight down it’s pretty strong. You could always put a pillow underneath the bar just in case. I do that for my 5yo since she naturally wiggles a little
As a builder, knowing how architraves are attached to a door frame. The first and 3rd took gives me major anxiety 😂
Thanks for this, but you didn’t discuss the ergonomics of the exercises and for example how wide you can get your grip.
That's a great point. Maybe I'll include in another video
I just bought the one shown at 0:35 The door is at the end a hallway, so the bar is too wide from wall to wall. I don't have any other doors where it will work so it's going back.
Whos here because the gym is closed

I got the first kind but had to return it because my trim on the door is too narrow. The last, clip type was 100 euros more then the others.
One bar you didnt mention is the Losrecal pull up bar. I'm not sure how to describe it, but google it, its a neat concept! It's the only one where you can adjust the height in the doorframe because it doesn't rely on the top of the door.
Yes! It’d be similar to the screw in ones. I have heard those start to slide over time, but definitely an option
Thanks
👍 I’m glad it helped!!
Could you review the evolve over pullup bar please
I’ll see what I can do. What do you like about it?
Thanks for the video. The duonamics seem ideal for what I'm looking for. I'm wondering if they are little awkward/more difficult to use because the bars where you hold onto aren't fixed in place. Would this still be suitable for someone beginning pull-up training?
Maybe just slightly harder but overall great! Almost nicer because your wrists are not locked into position
@@BackyardNinjaKids do they leave marks on the door frame?
Just FYI...I would not recommend using a pocket door opening for any type of pullup bars. You may not have had an issue here but there is very little structural integrity on the pocket side and above the door opening as their is just a very light gauge frame that allows the door to slide in to.
Good insight!! 👍
This was super helpful, thanks!
Great to hear! Thanks for letting me know
how about the kind that don’t use screws but use your downforce to push outward against the door frame or hallway walls?
I haven’t tried those before, but have heard they do slide down over time and pads wear out. Pros and cons to all of them
helpful, thanks
Great to hear! Thanks for the feedback
How much weight can these bars hold? I weight 18 stone and what's would be the best one for someone of my side thank you
I would recommend either a free standing bar or one that is screwed into the wall
I was wondering if you ever tested the pull up bars that just go in between your door frame and you have twist it to extend the bar to fit tight? Its cheap but I dont want to spend money on a bar that's gonna keep slipping
I don't have one but have used one. A friend has one and they really like it. I might have to get one to further test
@bryan cebrero Do you have a link to one of these bars so I can purchase one?
Instructions unclear... i broke my ceiling by trying to re-enact wreaking ball by Miley Cirus
😂😂
What pull-up bar can you use gymnastic rings on?
Realistically any pull-up bar, but only really safe on one that’s screwed in
my door has litle window above its frame. and the frame is solid wood. is the 1st bar strong enough for 80kg or 168lbs?
I would think it would be. There should still be a header in there which is the strength above the door. As long as the mount is not touching the window
I wish I had seen this video sooner. I've seen people using the Shed kind since the beginning of home pull up bars. My mom wanted to start doing dead hang to help with her alignment, I got her a removable one like the Shed, but it was tooooooo removable, like if I'm not careful it drops on my nose removable. I was wondering if I was handling it incorrectly because no one ever talked about the danger of it being so easily detached from the door frame. Can't have my mom deal with that so I moved on to an expansion kind against the sides of the door frames. Now I need to equip my own apt with a set but my door frame is too thin for the expansion kind to take hold, and I wouldn't know what to do if I didn't find out about Eleviia from you. The only concern is that it might pull down my whole door frame from the top but I hope that's just me being paranoid.... Either way, this is such precious video to come across. Thank you, Scott.
I’m glad this for you helped. Thanks for sharing. There’s always potential he could pull off your trim. That said I think it’s pretty low due to the design
nice thx
Glad it helped

I’m not positive. I’ll do some checking. That’s starting to get to be pretty tall for one. You may need to bring your knees up
