  • *⚠️⚠️WARNING: Parts of this video contains live footage of Joel Cauchi with knife* ⚠️⚠️On Saturday the 13th of April in the afternoon, a 40 year-old caucasian male named Joel Cauchi went on a stabbing spree at a large shopping center in Bondi. He killed 6 people and injured several others. It was later revealed that Joel had a complex mental health condition, schizophrenia.
How do we begin to make sense of Joel Cauchi's actions at the Bondi shopping center? What was Joel Cauchi's motive?
My name’s Kathleen and I work as a registered psychologist in Sydney. In this video I want to share my reaction and thoughts of Joel Cauchi from a mental health perspective, while acknowledging my view of Joel is only based off observations and my knowledge of schizophrenia - I do not know Joel, I was not present at the incident, and ultimately we will never know the full picture of Joel's mental state on the day he went on this stabbing spree in Bondi. At the time of making this video police are still investigating what happened.
Have a question or want to share a reflection? Please leave your feedback down below.

Your empathy and sincerity in trying to understand someone else's circumstances really comes through in this video in a way I've never seen before. It's like we're finally getting to see you in "psychologist/therapist" mode :)

Thank you Kathleen for your insights, I thought it was kind, reflective and a good reminder of how we need to better support our population with ongoing complex mental health issues. 10 sessions of subsidised psychology per year is not enough for the most vulnerable people who are struggling. My motto for mental health is that it's an explanation, not an excuse. We can see how schizophrenia explains Joel's behaviour, but it doesn't excuse that what he did was a terrible decision and one that caused immense pain to those who lost their loved ones.

Hi Kathleen, thanks for your insight - I think it's a great reflection and certainly helps de-stigmatize mental illness. I'm just wondering if a sort of warning at the beginning of the video might be useful? I myself have tried to avoid watching video clips of the event to protect my mental wellbeing and manage my own anxiety and wasn't expecting to see real clips of the event in this video. I might just be extra sensitive at the moment but just thought I'd share anyway! This really isn't meant to be criticizing at all - I'm a huge fan of your channel! Much love x

Hi Mel, really value your insight here, in hindsight I wish I included a disclaimer at the start. I’ve added a warning in the description!
Take good care of yourself and thank you so much for leaving this comment, really appreciate your support with the channel 🤍

Thank you for making this video. I’m a Sydneysider still trying to come to terms with what happened, and your insights have helped.

I'm from Joel's hometown. As has happened all over the world, after the introduction of psychiatric medications the health facility that we used to have here designed to support the mentally unwell (either as in or out patients) and by extension their families closed down, making community supports harder to access in a timely manner.
I feel like it was assumed that when medicated, these patients could largely intergrate into an inclusive society and that as a result these facilities had became too costly to run.
However, no-one can force an adult patient to take medication consistently and often the only ones monitoring this, with varying degrees of success are the patients extremely concerned families.
It was an accident waiting to happen. And now it has.
We need serious re-examination of the protocols and supports available beyond medication and how they can be implimented consistently and well.
I think you would find that many families like Joel's would breathe a huge sigh of relief if this were to happen moving forward.

I think you’ve made an excellent and very insightful comment - not just the individual with complex mental health problems struggles deeply, but the family unit supporting them as well. It’s a neglected conversation because the family are expected to just ‘deal with it’, and resources or support available can be hard to find, too costly or have very long waiting lists.

Thankyou for this. My heart breaks for Joel's family and Joel himself. This is a national issue and Federal Government need's to put Mental Health at the top of the Agenda.

I think his mental health would have deteriorated significantly due to isolation, lack of social skills, lack of support, being in a new city, living out of his car… this could have caused his symptoms of schizophrenia to come back acutely. When you look at what he was trying to accomplish in life and what he desired, you can possibly get a sense for what the themes of his psychotic thinking would have been. Maybe he was having delusions like “I can’t get a girlfriend because women are out to get me” or “all women are evil” or some other magical, false belief that in his schizophrenic mind would have seemed like absolute truth. I have tremendous sympathy for the guy, as well as the victims, of course… schizophrenia is probably the worst mental illness there is. I am kind of glad he was killed, so he didn’t have to come back to reality and realise what he had done. He never seemed like a bad guy and he probably would have been crushed when he understood his actions. We need better mental health funding and support.
I wish more people understood schizophrenia and psychosis properly. There is too much moral panic about misogyny, DV, inceldom etc being created by the media and social media. The reality is, this was a very sick man with a complex mental illness. He wanted to have a life, he tried hard to make it happen but his illness got the better of him in the worst possible way…

A very good and interesting, and daresay delicate analysis.
    I am intrigued by:
-your accent/s: can't quite get a handle on it. Possibly originally eastcoast Ireland, possibly Glasgow, Scotland, then a bit north of London, perhaps Cambridge or Oxford..? Then oodles of US of A and Sydney.
This is just a fun little hobby: I like accents!
    Yours is lovely, BtW.
    - severe mental illness: just like any other illness in some regards, perhaps like schools for the visually impaired, or auditorily impaired, etc., I feel that a caring greater community would help maintain communities of like-folk in a manner that best suits them. Folk in wheelchairs in a community with ramps, that sort of thing.
A community of people with schizophrenia (and their medicos) would help folk struggling with exactly those challenges with compassion and experience.

Thanks for sharing - great to hear your insights and perspective on community playing a bigger role! (Re the accent - Australian born, but a lot of travel, living overseas etc)

Interesting to have a listen. To me its just the system needs to cater more for people like him. Parents, Police, Mental Health. His infatuation with Knives, his hatred towards women. Left untreated we end up in this situation. Could it have been prevented. Do we put them in mental health involuntary and they stay medicated then they are released and some are ok and some are like joel.😪
