It's cool that you have an open mind and are actually willing to give it a try and say it's good when it is. Some vegan cheeses are indeed not good, but some are delicious - much like dairy cheese! Just one tiny thing: eating a vegan diet is actually very affordable in most of Europe. Meat or cheese subsititues like the ones you tried are a bit expensive stil,, yes, but legumes, vegetables, grains and fruits are usually much much cheaper than meat and dairy. And most vegans don't eat vegan meats or cheeses as often as omnivores eat meat and dairy. We used to spend a lot more when we went grocery shopping before becoming vegan, that's for sure. But that's a very common misconception, and to be fair I did believe that too before going vegan myself. Anyway, this was a good video and I can't wait to see the one about vegan snacks!

i see where you are comming from but eating veggies and legumes is cheeper at home but is very time consuming to cook all your own meals and obviously not very enjoyable to most people so its not a very realistic argument if your trying to get the average person to switch, having good tasting ready made options would make it a lot more accessable to switch. If your not willing to spend A LOT if time cooking all meals for yourself and learning to actually make things taste good without substitutes yes it is very expensive to switch.

I am vegan, I do cook a lot, but not like, all the time. And I can definitely say that grocery shopping And eating out was both more expensive when I was a meat eater. This is probably true for most people who don't buy the cheapest meat options or eat meat less than once a week already. It's true that going vegan would be way more expensive if one continuously ate meat and dairy alternatives, but most people don't. Of course, this can be different in your country, but in Germany by now a lot of places offer vegan options without any supplements. Those options are generally cheaper than those with meat.
I will admit, however, that I've been vegetarian a couple of months before I went vegan, and that definitely was the time I spent the least amount of money for my food. Nevertheless, I think that was due to lower quality dairy products. Before switching to vegan entirely, I had a phase in which I tried to buy only dairy which was 'animal friendly' (what a euphemism, but still better than conventional production) and that was definitely more expensive than my vegan diet now.
It doesn't have to be expensive or a ton of work. You just need to know where to go and what to buy

"It's not got those fibres, it's mushier" is, no joke, exactly what I want to know. Speaking as a vegetarian who really dislikes meat and doesn't want it in my mouth ever. I'm glad that convincing vegan meat exists, for people who like it, but it's very not-for-me. So thanks - helpful video!

Love the review. Always interested to hear what meat eaters think about veggie and vegan options.
I'm vegetarian and dairy intolerant, and it's great to see that bigger chains are starting to actually produce decent alternatives (at one point you couldn't even get a salad box that was suitable for vegans at KFC).
Of all the things you tried in this video I've actually only tried the sub and the Maccy's goujon thingies, but I agree with you on both your reviews. Mc Donalds have made zero effort, and actually the veggie burger they used to have before they switched out to the goujons was way tastier (although still pretty underwhelming). You'd just think that as the biggest burger restaurant chain in the world that they'd be all over getting out an amazing vegan burger and doing it before anyone else.
The meatball sub is slightly better than the subway vegan patty (which is completely void of flavour), but again it's pretty underwhelming, and actually you get a tastier and more filling sub if you just get the bread with all the salad options and one of the vegan friendly sauces. If this does end up being limited edition I wouldn't be upset.
I have - other than from you guys - only heard good things about the steak bakes, but I'll reserve judgement til I try it. The vegan saus rolls were nice but I dont think they were as special as they were hyped up to be. I'm really excited to give the BK and KFC options a go now though, especially after your reviews.
To buy from the supermarket, without doubt the Beyond The Meat burger is the best. I've had 4 different hardened meat eaters try it and say that they couldn't taste the difference between that and a real beef burger. The only draw back is that they are pretty expensive.
You should try doing a review of vegan deserts and cakes. There's a lot of vegan versions of cakes, ice creams, cheesecakes, biscuits etc. out there now. Some are amazing. But like you say, it's been a long time since I've had the proper versions so maybe I've just forgotten what they taste like!

I like this taste test idea! I'm a "flexitarian"* and I'm usually not a huge fan of the meat substitutes**...but there are starting to be some that are really tasty. Not sure if they are available in UK freezer aisles, but the best I've found for home cooking are:
    1. Gardein meatless meatballs. Nice spicing, and a good texture. Best if panfried first to make the outside brown and crunchy.
    2. Quorn mince. Really versatile - I've used it in mostly in things with a sauce like casseroles, my abuelita's picadillo recipe, etc. Like the meatballs, the texture is better if you fry it in a little olive oil first.
    3. Beyond burger patties. These can be put on the grill like a regular hamburger patty and are very convincing. They do have a lot of saturated fat, though, so this in more of an ethical substitute rather than a "healthier diet" option.
I've yet to find a simulated "chunk" of meat that wasn't kinda weird in texture, though. The best I've had was the quorn "chicken" tenders (nearly there!), the worst Gardein "pork" chunks (it was VERY hard to choke down that stew; thank goodness it was 3/4 vegetables).
*As in 85% vegetarian, but I eat fish maybe 1-2 times a week, meat every 1-2 weeks.
**Calling smoke-flavored tempeh "vegan bacon" is just a recipe for disappointment, even if I would happily eat "smoky tempeh". Generally prefer things like falafel or beans & rice that are SUPPOSED to be vegan.

The test tends to be pretty good, but texture can be slightly off, with not much pull and can be a bit dry, but it can be really good! There are indeed many types of vegan cheese, some are disgusting, but some are actually ok! The Macdonalds has caused widespread disappointment among vegans, they do indeed use the same mix in all their products and its very lazy! I don't think McDonalds were going all out for Veganuary, they introduced those veggie dipper things in the wraps a while ago and they/re just trying to offer more veggie options, especially for happy meals and kids and stuff. That's why they haven't advertised it as such. I'm excited to try the Rebel Whopper this weekend. It isn't vegan though, the mayo and cheese and bun are non-vegan and the patty is flame grilled on the same machine as the meat patties, which is what gives it the smoky barbecue flavour. You can ask for it to be microwaved and come with no cheese and no mayo and you're almost all the way to Vegan but the point of it I think wasn't to ve Vegan but to introduce meat-free options to meat eaters like you and Jamie who are willing to try them. I had heard bad things about the KFC burger but you have swayed me to try it at some point! Keep up the good fight and stay honest

It's weird to see that it's still a relatively new thing in other parts of the world. I think because we have a huge vegetarian population who don't even eat eggs😹. One issue actual vegans and vegetarians might have with the BK Rebel Whopper is that it's prepared on the same grills as the meat patties, since the restaurants aren't set up to have separate veggie-only equipment. Not an issue for vegetarians who aren't that hard-line, flexitarians or other non-veggie folks trying to eat a more plant-based diet, but definitely a thing to keep in mind if you're a hard-line veggie/vegan (or are allergic to meat).

    Great vlog, Shaaba!
I was fully vegan for about 2 and a half years. Mostly raw. I loved it, but did find it challenging when eating out or at someone else's house.
I stopped when I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. At my age, 55 and post menopausal, your bones start to go to hell in a hand basket, anyways.
My doctor told me that being so strictly vegan can result in, for some people, bone loss, dental loss, or hair loss.
While I do eat meat and dairy now, the majority of my diet is still fruit and veggies.
I just prefer that over anything else. Any meat on my plate will always be a very small portion.
I hope you do give veganism a try though!
Much Love, to you both, from Ontario, Canada 🍁...Keli 💖

I also recommend the Quorn vegan pieces - they have a vegan and non-vegan recipe. My partner and I are veggie at home and we got the vegan pieces instead of the regular ones a few weeks ago and we think they're actually a lot nicer! (Quorn usually contains egg). My mum had bowel cancer and the specialist said in 20 years she had only treated two vegans for bowel cancer so I did my research, I am now vegan and my mum is most of the way there too, processed meat and red meat in your diet is just as bad for you as smoking, there are so many peer studies out there to back this up such as the China study and most of the worlds top university’s, I haven’t even mentioned the abuse animals face but it you think a free rang chicken gets more space to live in then a sheet of A4 paper then think again, that’s why they cat their beaks off at 1 day old because they spend their whole lives stressed out and peck each other. If you wouldn’t pay someone to abuse your cat and then kill them then why would it ever be ok to pay someone to abuse and kill a pig or a cow? It’s great to see you doing this😘

Btw eating vegan substitutes IS more expensive than meat alternatives but stuff that doesn't have to actually be marketed as vegan like veg/pasta/rice and stuff that is accidently vegan is no more expensive and that's what most vegan people eat on a daily basis so it tends to actually cheaper if you aren't constantly eating junk food

I know this is old, but as someone who’s Veg, I wanted to say 1) is expensive to eat healthy & it’s expensive to eat a lot of meat substitutes. I mean, beans and rice are SUPER cheap & easy to keep vegan if you mess with the seasonings. (I’ve been very poor & literally lived off of dramatically different beans & rice dishes.... red beans and rice with Mexican seasonings, chickpeas in bbq sauce over rice, black beans and veggies with rice....) 2.) vegan cheese is hit and miss, I’ve had some terrible stuff. I’m super excited to try different types of vegan cheese because I’m expecting cashew cheese to be really creamy.

So the rebel whopper from Burger King isn’t entirely vegan/or even suitable for vegetarians (depending on the individual)
The burger patty itself is plant based (soy) - but they cook it on the same grill and use the same equipment as meat burgers
BK say it’s because of this “to deliver the same unique flame-grilled taste”
The Mayo is regular mayo - not vegan mayo
It’s definitely down to the individual on whether they would class that as vegan (if they ordered without mayo)
but I thought I should say just in case for those that wouldn’t consider it vegan and didn’t know before they tried it
I have tried it though and for what it’s worth it is a really good plant based burger

    I'm in America.
Subway doesn't have the meatless meatball subs. (or heros as New Yawkers like myself say.)
I've heard of the KFC meatless Chicken but not sure if they have it here.
Burger King here is called the Impossible Burger.
    We don't have Gregg's here.
FYI the cheese and mayo they put on these sandwiches are not vegan and in some cases the buns aren't Vegan either. On Hardee's vegan burgers their buns are not vegan and you can substitute it wrapped in lettuce.
The vegan burgers and chicken burgers are cooked on same grills that they cook the real meat so there is cross contamination. You can have them cook it on a separate dedicated grill but in Burger King it isn't a flame grilled dedicated grill so not the same. Since Subway doesn't have the meatball sub here I don't know if they use vegan cheese or have vegan mayo.
If you want some good meatballs, Gardein meatless italian meatballs are great.
I stopped eating animal products, dairy and eggs on 10/4/19. I like it.
McDonald's here as far as I know do not have any vegan options. The UK, especially London have so many vegan options in stores and vegan Restaurants.
PS if you buy processed imitation meat products (called vegan junk food) it is convenient sometimes but expensive. Regular Vegan foods you cook yourself, pastas, veggies, tofu, beans, Lentils, legumes, pulses, peanut butter or almond butter, plant based milks, grains, breads, cereals are inexpensive for tons of food.

Daiya shredded cheese makes really great mac, or grilled cheese sandwiches but not good room temp. Daiya is meh for pizza. Siete has a very munchable cashew queso that's perfect for nachos. No cow suffers from the patties being cooked on the same surface, so it is vegan. Do some vegans prefer not to eat it because they are repulsed by the cooking method? Apparently. Does that make it not vegan? Absolutely not. It affects the person, not the animals, so it is vegan. Have a nice day.

    • @adamphilip1623
      @adamphilip1623 4 года назад +2

@@rhysguillerme2893 That's not how veganism works. The fact that it can be considered contaminated with animal products makes it not vegan. Veganism is a choice based on an ethical stand point that nothing the person consumed is a product of an animal being harmed. Whether it's a stand point you agree with or not doesn't change its definition, rather arrogant to think it does.
Burger king themselves list the cooking method as a reason the burger isn't even vegetarian so yeah you can argue semantics all you like but definitionally it's not vegan, period.

    • @rhysguillerme2893
      @rhysguillerme2893 4 года назад +2

Actually, that is how veganism works. By asking "does something hurt or exploit an animal, or not ?" and if the answer is yes, refusing to buy/use/consume it. However, what you describe - cross contamination - is how vegan certification works, indeed. The definition of veganism, since you bring it up, is : "Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose." Cooking a plant-based steak on something also used to cook meat does not contribute to animal exploitation, unless you feel giving money to Burger King for vegan meals is in fact contributing to suffering (because they also sell animal products.) In which case you would have a point, debatable yes, but a point nonetheless. It's not about arguing semantics, it's about actually keeping in mind the core of veganism : animal suffering, not human purity. We can respectfully agree to disagree, of course, and I'm sorry my comment came off as arrogant. It was not my intention. Good day to you. Also just in case: I'm very much vegan, 100% for ethical reasons so I don't take it lightly either.

    • @adamphilip1623
      @adamphilip1623 4 года назад +1

@@rhysguillerme2893 If that's the definition you choose to use that's fine but the way you're applying that definition would not satisfy many strict vegans. The burgers are almost certainly going to be contaminated with animal fat which is a direct product of animal exploitation ergo not vegan. Whether by accident or design animal fat is then part of that meal thereby making the meal not vegan. Also yes given that there are plentiful alternative options that do not involve supporting a company that not only uses animal products but also doesn't uphold the minimal ethical standard of avoidance of cross contamination is hardly an ethical choice as a vegan. So the burgers are neither physically nor in my opinion ethically suitable for vegans or vegetarians. I understand your more pragmatic approach however it is at odds with the ethical standpoint upon which many base their veganism, whilst more plant based options are a step in the right direction until they commit to making them truly vegan the impact will be severely limited.
