A purpose given to them as an alternative for being strays. I would like to have a followup on the business becoming corrupt and the pups finally becoming aware that they were being enslaved. An uprising would certainly be a good finale.
Interesting theory. However, it doesn't take into account the possibility that some former members of the Paw Patrol may have simply grown up and entered a form of retirement, still alive & well. In line with this thought, it's also possible that the human leader of the group isn't the original founder, but rather was chosen by his predicessor to continue in their place once they entered retirement.
In the tracker episode it is implied that Rocky prepared his whole set of equipment not to mention Ryder is coming up with new ideas for the pups off screen before they are even used meaning certainly Ryder created the main six pups rescue sets first before recruitment and also he came up with other ideas later on not on day one because of how much pups get new equipment it doesn't make sense that if there were pups before them who just used the classic gear
I’m just saying, I feel like it could also be that the puppies just grow up and then get swapped out with younger dogs as the older ones go into their respective jobs. Like Chase would become an ACTUAL K-9 Unit for example. Just a thought.
I like this theory, the team being a puppy pre-k where they get a bit of initial training and aptitude testing before they go on to their respective training and jobs as they grow up. Each team being their own graduating class
As someone who has been working on this show for over a decade, this was a kick to watch! I can verify that the animation team is very much in on the joke that Zuma never gets called on missions (we make internal memes of it all the time XD ). And the Rubble badge on the screen at 5:30 I think was just a straight-up oversight. It was season 1, things got missed. We had no idea at the time it would blow up to the phenom it's become but sure glad it has!
The fact that they are expendable is true. They are stray dogs, you can find them everywhere and the show presents it so by recruiting dogs of varied shapes and sizes. At the same time they are not restricted to just the main city. The fact of the matter is that those dogs have all living expenses taken care of. They are given specialized training, equipment and a purpose . At the same time they have a reasonable degree of freedom. They can do whatever, as long as it does not conflict with their purpose (just like any other job). I think that Ryder has the wellbeing of the dogs as a priority (for whatever reason). Ryder does not try to cut costs at the expense of the livelihood of the dogs, nor does it look like he sees them as the equivalent of one-use latex gloves (put them on, if they get damaged or the task is done, throw them and get new ones). When Rubble joins the team, the vehicle handed down was perfectly operational. Besides some exterior wear and tear, it looked like it was properly maintained even when not in use. Also, he tries to save Rubble instead of just finding a replacement. This theory is based around the idea of "recruiting stray dogs". You can look at it from both points of view. Either you lean onto the "expendable" side (cheap and easy to replace), or on the "rehabilitation" side (a new life and a new purpose). The common ground is that there is a trade between the dogs and the community. The dogs are taken care of by the community and in exchange, they take care of the community by handling emergency situations.
tbh this point of view is the best i think that he really cares maybe some died of old age or retired. Even with accidents in the field we dont treat them any less then any other member of the force .. police dogs and military dogs protect as much as possible it extends to all branches there expendable only because of time or bad luck but still cared for and loved anyways
While not exactly applicable to the show but more for the avalanche dog example, the dogs are just better at it than humans. Sure work dogs could be put into danger by using their tracking skills, but it's not like they aren't the best tool around. An autonomous detection system that can find a body under 3 feet of snow? That'd be a couple million dollar research contract if they didn't exist.
@@tomispandacuddle it makes sense bc if any died in the line of duty, they would most likely get a funeral or something for their service. they’re probably retired
Rather than wondering why this theory is a thing, I'm strangely more curious over who's funding a 10 year old to put dogs in perilous situations. Like he probably has himself in a bit of danger as well as he's got his own vehicle and is seen with the pups on missions, like in the clips and pictures that are shown. Who's paying this child? In fact, isn't this child labor?
When Ryder said “you were the bravest pup I had ever seen” I said “bruh, stop the cap!” How was that brave he did what anybody would do when they are about to get hit by a car, he just froze so stop capping Ryder!
I love him for that reason and that reason only. I have a younger brother whose 6 years old, and well yeah its just funny to find the darkest, most disturbing things about a cartoon
I wondered why they don’t have a medic dog, when there’s an aviation one. Surely in a fantasy kids show even in the US you can pretend EMTs are affordable public service. Edit: MatPat’s theory actually explains this as well. EMTs don’t tend to die during service.
One thing that always bugged me with the show when my little sister was into it a few years back was how there was no adult dogs for some reason. The puppies are out there doing rescues for several seasons and yet they never grow up and never meet an older dog.
I love that most people could probably also come to this conclusion if they just thought about the entire situation realistically. In a world with hyper-intelligent dogs that can perform rescues as good as and sometimes way better than people, a team of expendable rescue pups is not only plausible, but it just makes sense. Sometimes a dark secret isn't that much of a secret I guess lol
Matpat is the only one that can make an incredibly innocent and wholesome movie/series with some dark Backstories. This really got dark real quick Edit : OMG 1.2k likes, mom I'm famous now. Thanks for the likes guys.
This brings up another issue: why is Ryder, a kid, managing pups to do adults' work? Has there been an instance in the show that explain why it isn't an adult that's managing the pups? Of course it's a kids' show so the main character is a kid, but wouldn't it be weird for a kid to manage a team of fire fighters and police officers? Does Ryder even get paid for his work? Did something happen to his parents? Also, if the pups are the only animals talking and behaving like humans (being able to express desires, that is) do they have animal rights only or do they also have human rights? Would them be hired for work be considered abuse or just voluntary work? Because if the previous pups died, did they die of old age/they can retire or are they forced to work until they die in an accident or die in the line of duty, basically?
@@skizzpulse what if Ryder is also being exploited , and someone else is running the show ? After all , he could just be a figurehead appointed in order to cut cost and in order to give the rescue service good PR .
My wife has always asked "where does he get these wonderful 'toys'??" He's gotta be independently wealthy... but she can't admit to herself the possibility, but Matpat can, that Rider's exploiting the pups for his own gain.

Yeah, I love theorizing about little kid shows. How come Geo and Millie are the only two tiny humanoids in the world of Umizoomi? What kind of advanced technology is Bot made of and why is he the only one? I sense a tragic war torn history with magically infused Lilliputian technology, and lots of mighty math powers.
This isn't as childhood ruining as I thought. I haven't watched a whole lot of Paw Patrol, but from the little amount that I did watch I definitely get how this is possible. I think Ryder is still being honest though, he is also providing these stray dogs with a home and food as well as a purpose in life. It's a win for all.
Only matpat can make a children's show like paw patrol dark... never change mat Edit: wow this is my most liked comment on youtube thx so much (now I may see people mad that I thanked for likes)
I've... never actually put this into thought. Especially as a 16-year-old who finds himself watching this show when I have nothing to do. This is actually interesting, and quite dark for a kid show. I've actually thought that Ryder recruited dogs because they were "expendable", and this only increases the evidence.
the real life rescue dogs are misrepresented though. It's portrayed that they are chosen due to their expendablity, but it really should have been noted that most of the time that dogs have jobs it's because they are better than humans at detecting stuff (people, drugs, explosives, etc.) mostly through scent! They are more qualified than humans in a lot of search and rescue tracking because they have a super sense. That point of the vid does not past muster.
Well, I think the comment on the puppies being successful is great but if not it's no loss touches on that. The dogs can def be super useful, and do jobs better than humans could, but it's also true that they do not have as high a value as a human life does. Though that gets really messed up in this universe and with this theory since the puppies are sentient, thinking, beings... Big oofs all around
But not all scenarios. A human would be more efficient and versatile in police field having to use intelligence to solve critical problems. Additionally, a human is essential for the output during a task requiring to use satellite or sonar technologies if I’m not mistaken. Dogs are more vital in cramp place such as an avalanche as it requires many manoeuvre moves. Moreover, technologies has played a significant role in such tasks enabling to utilize unprecedented functions such as extremely sensitive scent that are only in some creatures.

More like at least the ethical and moral question of using animals for everyday risks and rescues to at most and I'm not surprised if they did peta using it as campaign or argument about the crulty of animals in the everyday service or work for or due to human involvement
Ya know, this could be a series where Mat just theorizes on children’s shows. I would definitely watch all of them. It’s fun to see things more in depth that would’ve never came to mind as a 6 year old
I really hope Ollie watches these videos when he is older. He deserves to know what Mat was actually thinking when he was forcing him to watch his little baby shows
Thats funny....that is just how Skye is recruited by Ryder, as well. She once had an owner, but she was the smallest and the weakest in her litter, so one day, in a snowstorm, she leaves her home and follows Ryder home, and he finds her, shivering in the snow, and makes her part of his team, as the Aviation Pup.
Can I just say how much I love these Film theories based on children's shows? Keep up the great work Matt, get 'em where you can, so you don't look like you're stretching for clues the next time a new Batman/ Avengers film arrives,
A minor theory I have about Ryder is that he's some kind of minor god hiding as a ten year old child, seeing in how at least one episode he lifts an adult male walrus (which weighs around a small car) , is crazy smart, and all the pups obey him without question. Also the fact that he's so unnaturally calm in every situation Just a mini theory though
Possibly. While it seems a little bit of a stretch, my own theory about Ryder might be a stretch too. Think about it: Ryder is crazy strong, crazy smart, high level of endurance (one episode he climbed all the way from the bottom to the top of the Lookout using only the fire pole, without breaking a sweat) the pups obey him without question, and the pups are severely distraught when he's not there to give them every single instruction. Also the people of adventure Bay aren't exactly bright. With the exceptions of a select few, ryder and his pups are the only ones able to handle the emergencies. My theory stretch is that maybe somehow he's manipulating their decision making so that he can strengthen his superiority complex as well as their devotion to him and his team.
also, how every emergency they go to always happens to be a safe for work emergency. so, in the entire city, one prominent enough to feature the tallest building in the world, no horrific or sexual crimes occur? and not just that, but so few incidences in general occur that only 1 dog per job is needed. 1 cop, 1 firefighter, 1 construction worker, etc for an entire big city. interesting.

No family friendly shows are safe from Matpat anymore. If there's even a small amount of Lore somewhere, he will find it and he will solve it's true purpose
Ash is in a coma theory, Angelica is a druggie and hallucinates all babies except Dill theory, Ed Edd and Eddy everyone is dead theory, the Mane Six are dead theory, Spencer is actually Crazy Steve who kidnapped Meghan theory. This is nothing new and probably no more than an attempt at creepypasta
I love dark theories about children's shows/movies based on things that *actually* are implied, instead of "wouldn't it be fucked up if it was this?" theories. Keep up the good work, Matpat!!
I love that this one looked like it was gonna be one of those “Their all dead and in purgatory since the city is always in peril somehow” theory’s, but no- it’s just logical stuff that we’ve seen in the series entirely
I love that the legacy MatPat left on Film Theory is literally a father who needs a break and is hetting crazy from overanalyzing little kid's series/movies AND a Zuma hater. Seriously he cannot stop roasting Zuma.
And here i was thinking that the only non-sensical thing in this show is the utter lack of physics often used in it like how Marshall gets in the base in many different ways. Oh man...
yeah i feel you what about there biology, laws of physics, and frick what about other subjects that has math. I will like to add make them as dark as possible
The evidence and logic lines up, though I think Ryder's motivations are more altruistic. Remember he's 10, by all logic he inherited the Paw Patrol from one of his parents, meaning how it functions is just normal to him. He likely sees what he's doing as good, taking orphaned pups off the street and training them to be rescue dogs. Also at just 10 he likely hasn't been in charge long enough and has had a really good run of luck that he has yet to lose any dogs. Ryder's team isn't the first Paw Patrol team it's HIS first team. Whomever ran it before Ryder probably lost many dogs to either accidents or old age, but since this is a show of young kids the topic will be ignore or left as vague as possible and we won't see the inevitable first time Ryder loses a team member.
Well- I imagine that many died of old age along time ago. It makes sense because they’ve been taken of the street too help do good and it makes sense that they have a good life and most likely died of old age

I love how all of these dark theories would’ve went away had the producers spent just one more week double-checking everything in the episode for loopholes or weird questions. Just one line about the Mayor getting in touch with the team’s supplier and Rubble having to ride with Marshall until then would’ve solved the vehicle problem perfectly. Also, swapping Zuma and Rubble’s vehicle numbers.
Honestly if I were a producer for one of these shows, I'd intentionally leave those "mistakes" in hopes MatPat would find them, even if they weren't part of the canon lore. But that's probably why I'm not a producer on a kids' show.
@@tomorrowisyesterday3215 Is this an attempt to correct the persons grammar or is it a joke? Cause if it’s a correction, you’re wrong. Edit: And if it’s a joke, I don’t get it
I know the answer is "they don't age because this is a cartoon", but how old is Ryder? If he has been around for this long, how can he still be 10? Also I am like 85% certain that after this episode, we're going to get an episode with retired Paw Patrol members.
If the town is so used to the paw patrol idea and Ryder is literally a child then doesn't it stand to reason that he isn't the first human to lead the paw patrol? If he was he would probably have had to work harder to prove to the town that it was a good idea. And the older folk in town are also generally accepting and used to it - they have a special button for calling Ryder on all of their phones for heaven's sake - which implies that the paw patrol has been a thing for a while, and we never see or meet Ryder's parents or even a guardian, he never even mentions them as far as I know, and he lives alone with his dogs. So what if it's not just the pups, but the entirety of the paw patrol squad, including Ryder, who are seen as expendable or replacements?
To support your theory even more, the button to call "Ryder" seems to actually be a button to call Paw Patrol as seen in at least two cases. One was when Marshall was left alone in the Lookout and Katie called for help, thinking she is calling Ryder, but instead caught Marshall. Another and more recent is when Ryder left to get some repair part for Robodog and leave Katie in charge, giving her spare Pup-Pad. And eventually, Katie is called by Mayor Goodway, who thought she called Ryder. So, yeah, this further proves your theory that Ryder is replaceable too.

Yes, but it's unlikely. And then there is stuff they MADE SPECIFICALLY for stand alone episodes, like the award for the record? They made it with HIS truck on it, as in saying there is no other paw patrols, and the truck existed BEFORE him

Another Theory:Where are Ryder's parents? They probably died when leading another paw patrol. His parents probably taught him to build those vehicles. Or they built them himself. How do you think a ten year old is going to build a fully functional lookout and pupmoblies and packs that respond to voice commands.

Honestly, this seems to be a solid theory. Amazing job. I was thinking, dude to the small size which makes it easier to move in tight spaces was the reason why puppies are used. Like, how in the past, fighter pilots had to be within a certain height range. So, the adult dogs are living in some farm or home. . but, your theory makes alot of sense too.
I have a theory of my own: Ryder isn't using the dogs as expendable rescue animals but rather he's following in the footsteps of his parents! After all you never see or even have his parents mentioned at all in both the show AND the movie!! Pretty strange considering Ryder is only 10! You'd think a ten year old would have his parents mentioned or involved in the rescue missions UNLESS his parents were dead! Afterall if a ten year old lost his parents, they're aren't going to be menationed due to trauma! He's not involved in some government thing, Ryders parents perished in their own paw patrol duties and he is continuing their legacy! That's why rubbles equipment is a hand me down, a construction pup died along with Ryders parents! The paw patrol is generational, not governmental! And Ryders future kids will follow up with their own paw patrol and then his grandkids ect. Edit: Jesus Christ! I've never had this many likes on a comment of mine before!
Or maybe Ryder started recruiting pups after his parents died helping others. He didn't want to see any other kid lose their parents like that so he decided to make dogs do the dangerous jobs instead
@@jbw_jones6464 the problem with that is this: he could be just as heartbroken with the pups death as his parents because he’s going to get attached to them just as much! Plus that doesn’t explain why rubbles equipment is a hand me down!

While I agree that the pups may have had predecessors, I disagree that Ryder is just "using" the pups for their expendability. There's really not much evidence that Ryder doesn't care for their lives, while he does seem to care for the dogs much of the time. I think maybe he just wants to give these dogs a home, and the expendability is a coincidence.
Agreed with this comment. Plus, it's also possible that the predecessors are no longer Paw Patrol members for other reasons. Yes, being a Paw Patrol member is dangerous, but MatPat has not provided any evidence how the predecessors died or that they even died. They could have died from things unrelated to their professions as Paw Patrol members, or simply retired because they got too old.
Actually. I can think of a plausible reason. Stress dogs are a thing. Therapy dogs put in schools to relieve stress. So, if you’re in an emergency situation and a capable cutie pup comes to rescue you, you’d probably be a lot more relieved and even happier.
i am obsessed with this; simple lighthearted media being overanalyzed for theories while still being grounded and logical HAHA. the fact that this isn't a show that purposely fills itself with lore and connection (like Marvel media) makes it so much better. this somewhat makes me feel better as an adult who is hyperfixated on a kids show and makes theories and headcanons for it (Top Wing. "Paw Patrol but birds", but I beg to differ lmao. it somewhat has more lore and storyline in it)
That's why these theories exist, to make adults feel better about being being interested in kids' shows. If I had a dime for every stunted manchild that made the claim that a piece of children's media is 'darker than you think' I'd have MatPat money.

This is what I always thought too tbh. Or, alternatively, the cat actually CAN talk in universe but just actively chooses not to since let's face it, that's just how cats are

Honestly I think from the lack of theories on different shows and movies as well as things in real life that he's been getting . In order to keep up with his channel he makes theories on anyting but seriously dude are you okay after all this?
I think this episode had a little conclusion bias. These clues can be interested positively, or at least not so darkly. Ryder selects strays because it's much more ethical to rescue a dog and give it a loving home then trying to somehow recruit dogs that already have owners. There would be a big moral question of removing the dog from the home if that were the case. And of course there would be predecessors on the paw patrol team. Emergency service workers work in some of the most dangerous environments out there, and unfortunately that means members fall in the line of duty far too often. But the team has to be maintained, if a member isn't replaced, the team isn't fully equipped to deal with the next emergency, and lives could be lost because of it. Previous members may not be remembered and displayed, but thats not to far from reality. Not all service workers do something incredible or not worthy enough to have a loud legacy, most simply do their job to the absolute best they can at their job until they can't anymore. They save lives, and they'll be honored and recognized for that when they fall, but at the end of the day they're just another name in a sea of names. Only when they do something extra do they get talked about and remembered. In the example provided in the video, the previous Marshall set a record. The record is still around, its held as an achievement. If they were truly intentionally being erased, they would have wiped that record. And while the wear and tear on rubble's equipment is evidence of a former construction pup, I think its more a commentary on the second-hand everything construction workers have to use on a daily basis -in addition to the stereotype of being strong, tough, and worn- as opposed to and indication that the new member isn't worth new gear

Not to mention Ryder already has the badges for the pups before they're even recruited
Even the new pups like Ryder already has a badge for Tracker and Everest when we first meet them
i think he planned it before
In the tracker episode it is implied that Rocky prepared his whole set of equipment not to mention Ryder is coming up with new ideas for the pups off screen before they are even used meaning certainly Ryder created the main six pups rescue sets first before recruitment and also he came up with other ideas later on not on day one because of how much pups get new equipment it doesn't make sense that if there were pups before them who just used the classic gear

I love how he goes at the end “andddd cut.” it’s amazing!!!
Yay for making this theory less dark I guess?
tbh this point of view is the best i think that he really cares maybe some died of old age or retired. Even with accidents in the field we dont treat them any less then any other member of the force .. police dogs and military dogs protect as much as possible it extends to all branches there expendable only because of time or bad luck but still cared for and loved anyways
Thanks for making this theory a little less dark.
Imma go hug a pillow now..
Yes, but back when we watched this show we were all dumb kids.
It's only child labor if you pay them. Otherwise it's community volunteer work.

I wondered why they don’t have a medic dog, when there’s an aviation one. Surely in a fantasy kids show even in the US you can pretend EMTs are affordable public service. Edit: MatPat’s theory actually explains this as well. EMTs don’t tend to die during service.
I would theorize (so to speak) that EMT would be the hardest of these jobs to perform without hands.

Because if the previous pups died, did they die of old age/they can retire or are they forced to work until they die in an accident or die in the line of duty, basically?

the real life rescue dogs are misrepresented though.
I mean, yes, dogs can be suited better for some jobs, but not everything you know, a dog operating a fire hose? An excavator? A helicopter???
@@jameseholschen3 Well real life dogs are also sentient thinking beings, the thing is we don't usually see it that way because they can't talk
@@jameseholschen3 Ya, they are only high value when it comes to the medical Bill you pay for just the check-up
But not all scenarios.
There’s one question no one has gone over even this channel. How can the dogs speak and how are they driving on their own?

Can I just say how much I love these Film theories based on children's shows?
Keep up the great work Matt, get 'em where you can, so you don't look like you're stretching for clues the next time a new Batman/ Avengers film arrives,
A minor theory I have about Ryder is that he's some kind of minor god hiding as a ten year old child, seeing in how at least one episode he lifts an adult male walrus (which weighs around a small car) , is crazy smart, and all the pups obey him without question. Also the fact that he's so unnaturally calm in every situation
Just a mini theory though
Lmao just Ryder as god
1 cop, 1 firefighter, 1 construction worker, etc for an entire big city. interesting.
or maybe Ryder is the local god of the Adventure Bay, and that makes more sense

I always wondered what that giant emblem does to those random ojects that marshall aciddentaly enters the elevator with
The evidence and logic lines up, though I think Ryder's motivations are more altruistic.

I have a 2.5 year old who’s obsessed, so I watch it all the time. This was hilarious watching this! Thanks for the laugh while I water trees in the cemetery . And very well made and fun theory.
But because of those loopholes MatPat has been able to brand Ryder as a Weapons dealer and Capitalist
Honestly if I were a producer for one of these shows, I'd intentionally leave those "mistakes" in hopes MatPat would find them, even if they weren't part of the canon lore. But that's probably why I'm not a producer on a kids' show.

I know the answer is "they don't age because this is a cartoon", but how old is Ryder? If he has been around for this long, how can he still be 10?

Ryder is definitely suffering from that deformation that prevents their body from visually ageing
Pokémon's ash: Hello there
Mattel: Write that down! Write that down!
Now the Ryder and Katie thing, kid me thought that too, Matt.

Wait. If you are in trouble and someone saves you, you will see that person as a hero and will want to do anything to repay them. Just like manipulation. Is that what Ryder is doing? Manipulating the dogs? Making them trust him with their lives even if they know the risks?
yes
But if you look deeper you will realize that every person in the world uses manipulations, it is called: creating social connections
Yeah that makes loads of sense. They pups wouldn’t die, they’d just get too old to fit into mechs.
Yeah all the former patrol members are still alive, they have just gone to a farm upstate and are chasing rabbits.
This makes MUCH more sense than a 10 year old being involved in some sort of government/business driven conspiracy
now that I've read this it made m feel a lot better about paw patrol
@@jbw_jones6464 the problem with that is this: he could be just as heartbroken with the pups death as his parents because he’s going to get attached to them just as much! Plus that doesn’t explain why rubbles equipment is a hand me down!

While I agree that the pups may have had predecessors, I disagree that Ryder is just "using" the pups for their expendability. There's really not much evidence that Ryder doesn't care for their lives, while he does seem to care for the dogs much of the time. I think maybe he just wants to give these dogs a home, and the expendability is a coincidence.
ruclips.net/video/dQw4w9WgXcQ/видео.html
Finally Its Here
Agreed with this comment.
Think about it why would he appoint dogs, there r plenty of humans that need homes
Agree on top of that how would Ryder keep the whole towns mouth shut about the previous pups.

AHH BOTS SHUT UP
Honestly I think from the lack of theories on different shows and movies as well as things in real life that he's been getting .
