    The 2018 us a BEAST but it's not fair for Ford to say some will tick and some won't. Hard working people buy their dream cars and now it's a lottery if you get one that ticks or one that doesn't. Ford needs to wake up and issue a real recall.

    I'm a mechanical engineer and to answer your question about why some engines have the tick and others don't, every engine has a different tolerance stack up due to machining variances. This does't mean there is a problem, as the tolerances can still be within proper spec. However, these differences in the tolerance will cause different noises in each engine, especially in a high compression engine like the Coyote. Also this would explain why the tick is more common in a 2018-19 Coyote versus the 2011-17 because the new car has a higher compression ratio. Hope that helps.

  • @saddle8bag
    @saddle8bag 5 лет назад +5

    The answer to your question is tolerance. All parts have tolerances. Nothing is built to a perfect spec. When you bolt parts together, you get a tolerance "stack up." You might get one part that cancels out the other or adds more tolerance to the other. Throw in temperature fluctuations in material expansion and you get mechanical things that make mechanical noises.
    More time driving and less time standing around the wheel well taking videos with a cellphone would probably break in the parts so that they quit making noise.

    The guys that don't have the tic or own one that does; have every right to discuss/ bash or whatever. I have an awesome NA mid 11 second 2012GT that I love. However, I loved the 18 when it came out and saw how strong they are out of the gate. I immediately wanted one but I held off to see how the direct port would be. I normally hold off and wait when changes are made to a car (why I have a 2012 automatic instead of 2011 MT82). I'm glad that I did here also because waiting to see how the direct port injection would be on the coyote, saved me from being a typewriter/ piston slap/ bbq tick victim. I honestly don't think Ford will address the problem or own up to it unless Camaro purchases start to slaughter Mustang purchases. Ford never owned up to the MT82 being a pos and still have it in our cars to this day. I don't see them being any different with the 18+ Coyote problem. If it is cheaper to keep things as is than to fix it , Ford will go that route.
    So, I wanted to buy a new 18-19 mustang but wouldn't consider unloading my 2012 because of this issue and especially Ford's denial of the problem . I have every right to bitch because of it.

    There is nothing normal about an engine tick. I had a very low level sounding tick in my HD motorcycle. The dealer was no help during the warranty period. At 60K Km and 2 years out of warranty the tick all of a sudden became so loud that it was ridiculous. Ended up costing me AU$6,000 to have the motor rebuilt. The problem was just ever the slightest play in one crankshaft causing piston slap. And by the way, after the engine rebuild, there was and many miles later, no more tick. Funny about that. My strong recommendation to those having engine tick is to 'formally' (ie. documented) report it to the Ford dealer during the warranty period so that if it gets worse and there is engine damage down the track, you can push for the repair to be claimed under warranty.

    The only thing holding me back from buying a 18 or 19 is I’ve seen four people I know personally get screwed on this problem and no one can figure out the exact cause!
    I’ve seen 2- E85 cars go
    I’ve seen 2- whipple cars go
    I don’t think I want one anymore because it would have to remain stock which isn’t my bag.

    Zander - Key point that I’m glad you hit was the inconsistency between cars, and even the inconsistency from time to time on the same car. @coyotecarguy summed up wisely IMO by attributing it to a byproduct of mass production. But if it wasn’t for mass production we would not be able to buy a car with high performance at this price point. Catch 22, it is what it is so we move forward and concentrate on having fun.

      This isn't completely true. The direct injection pump located on the passenger side top of the engine makes a ticking noise as well, and its completely normal.
      My 2018 started ticking around 10k miles and then the tick turned into a knock around 20k miles. Ford put a new motor in it.
      My 2012 ticked for over 100k modded miles with zero issues.

    From a mechanic stand point, I think it could be a few things.
    1. The lash adjusters are bad. This happens in the 4.6, 5 4, and 6.8 after a while. I've had new ones tick and 100,000 mile ones not. It's a mixed bag on the lash adjusters. Oil effects this because oil pressure keeps it "pumped up" to keep the cam follower/rocker against the cam and on the valve stem tip.
    2. The intake runner control valve is faulty. It can rattle or flop bc of bad components. The electric motor that operates the flaps can shutter causing a tick. But, an oil change wouldn't effect this.
    3. Piston slap is unlikely but a possibility. Oil can effect this but very rarely.
    4. The oil that is changed into the engine is different from the oil that was in the engine when it is new. I seen people put additives in the oil and the tick go away or serverly lessen. So it seems to me that the additive package in the oil is different for the "break-in" oil compared to replacement oil.
    These are my own theories and opinions on the infamous typewriter tick.
    If you have a new 5.0 with the tick, I'd love to find out what it is. I have a few tests I can do to find out where the noise is precisely coming from and possibly come up with a viable solution to the problem.

  • @eugeneeckhartiii
    @eugeneeckhartiii 5 лет назад +1

    Thanks for not beating a dead horse on this issue. To me the tick and piston slap are different issues. TSB 7718 is to prevent a financial/time consuming burden on the dealerships. Now if you have an obvious slap and a dealership tries to hide behind TSB 7718, shame on them.

    As a whole, there is no consistency across the board...some cars tick some do not...that being said, the cars that do tick, have owners that are rightfully concerned, and are looking for accurate information to navigate their options appropriately...the cars that do not tick, have owners that are not as concerned, and are looking to get past the topic. Unfortunately, the cars have been known to turn on their owners...the cars that tick, will always tick, the cars that don’t, may at some point...at this point, those owners may be concerned with educating themselves about their options, and collateral damage. IDK if you know my story, but I jumped ship ASAP because it was the right thing for me to do, I would have lost THOUSANDS! I don’t hate on anyone who wants to “send it” it’s their car, their situation...good job Alex!

    Are F150 truck owners with 5.0's under the hood having the same engine sounds a well? I could understand it easier if all versions and engines sounded the same. It is after all not a push rod engine. And extra valvetrain noise would be easier to understand as normal. But with some doing it and others not or to a less extent seems to me at least as more of a QC issue or even oil pressure issues...who knows...if I owned one and paid all that money I can easily understand how that would piss off owners. Thanks for the content..good stuff. A good friend owns a Mach model manual shift in black same as the car in this video. Also, like Zander hinted at or said in the video...if they know it's not a problem, why the fuck not say exactly what it is from an engineering standpoint that is causing this in some cars? The type of person who brings their car in to the dealer with this issue is going to want to know what exactly is causing this noise, your average driver may not even recognize it as something abnormal. A TSB without a technical explanation of the cause of the noise other than to say "it's all good fellas" sounds like a CYA TSB, not an explanation.

    Us Mitsubishi 3000GT guys had lifter tick on the 1st gen cars because of the bore size of the lifters. Don't remember which generation 3000gt engine it was wether 2nd or 3rd the lifter bore size got larger from maybe 1mm to 3-4mm. This greatly help reduce the noise of the lifter tick. However on cold starts the ticks are there, oil needs to be warmed up. Certain oil weights affect the sound of the lifters as well. To really know if there is something truly going on, Ford should recommend to their customers perform a UOA (used oil analysis) report. I use blackstone-labs.com. the UOA report will compare your engine, provided you state the information. This way blackstone-labs.com will produce the proper universal averages for that particular car using that specific engine. Hope this helps some. The best UOA report I ever had for my mazda5 was using Ford motorcraft oil, shocking! Mobil1 does a decent job too. I did not try amsoil or royal purple bcuz it is too rich for me, lol. I tried many of the generic brands and they did ok. Again, hope thus helps, happy motoring!

    I am thinking about buying a new 2020 Mustang GT (or maybe 2021 model year) but I am terrified about this dreaded engine tick. The TSB put out by Ford is complete nonsense. That's like saying I am going to buy a suit but I am told by the designer that many of their suits come with stitching that comes apart and that is just a normal characteristic of the fabric. Are you kidding me? That is a load of BS!!! My response to Ford is, since they are one of the best engine builders in the world, why can't they make a 5.0 Litre engine WITHOUT the tick? There is OBVIOUSLY a design flaw in that engine or else there would be no ticking. You don't have to be a mechanical engineer to know that the sound is 100% NOT normal. Ford puts out this TSB (or let's call it an excuse) to cover themselves legally. Plain and simple. If I were running Ford I would solve this problem immediately by either:
    1) Correcting the design flaw to eliminate the ticking in any new models produced; or
    2) Come out with a new engine (other than the 5.0 Litre) that is PROPERLY designed that runs quietly and smoothly without any unwanted noises such as this tick.
    Until I get some answers from Ford that can alleviate my concerns, I will hold off on this purchase.

  •  5 лет назад

    What Ford needs to do is either have their engineers or contract an outside engineering company like Roush to do a root cause analysis on the cause of the tick. It may well be totally innocuous and have no effect on the longevity or performance of the engine. It would be reassuring to know the facts.

    Ford handled the 6.0 Diesel engine issues very poorly. They were late with production and had a lot of vehicle back orders. They built the emergency vehicles like ambulance chassis cabs first. They were blowing engines right away. Ford probably views the Coyote tick as no big deal, after the 6.0 disaster?

    9 times out of 10 if there is a serious engine issue the noise is obvious. it'll be consistent and alarming. these engines are super noisy. i run 5w30 and send it. i'm also doing zero engine mods, though, so i don't worry about drivetrain issues at all as far as warranty is concerned. the first motor in my cobra had piston slap and that was OBVIOUSLY an issue but it went away after a little bit of heat got in the motor. i've never heard a noise like that come from this engine. 2500 miles so far and she's a bat out of hell.

    I think its lateral movement on big end of rod causing the tick. The scoring is a whole other issue. Just my theory since I can replicate the noise on a pro rod crank set up in my garage. Hopefully one day the mystery can be solved.

      One of my typewriter tick theories is that the steel crank doesn't lengthen under thermal expansion as much as the aluminum block. The main problem with this theory is that the walls aren't scoring on the front to aft sides. They're scoring in the other direction.
      I can't wait until That1320Chick gets her sleeved block back from the machine shop so we can see if that fixed her problem. That will at least help to narrow it down.

    • @chuckfarley5415
      @chuckfarley5415 5 лет назад

      I completely agree with this! Mine had a short block put in at just over 1400 miles. The noise was obviously rod knock. They tore it down and found ABNORMAL bearing wear and cylinder scoring in cylinder 3. My theory stays the same.
      There is a terrible run of crankshafts out there that have bad machining. The rod bearings are allowed to walk on the shaft and slap the journal. The walking is so much it puts bind on the wrist pin and ends in cylinder wall damage.
      Luckily so far my new rotational assembly is tight. Any problems from here, especially since I waited two dam months for them to fix it.... Ford will be buying it back. In the end I love the car but I didn’t buy a rebuilt new car. I bought a NEW car. So shall ford buy a new rebuilt car .. 4400 total miles now.

Just sayin'. Now talking smack about it is something else altogether. It's 2019. In 2024 when people are buying used 2019 Mustangs; they will want to know about and understand what this tick issue was all about. I just did my first oil change. Only had 360 miles (600km). Put in 5w50 amsoil. Reason for the change is because I have a vortech v3 supercharger installed and was going for final dyno tuning. In the last 2 days I have drove 200 miles (including 8 pulls on the dyno), and beat on it (finally, but long before official break in was done). Put down 723whp, 559wtq on 94. Zero ticks, zero noise, except the squeals of excitement from me under wot lol. I personally think it's the oil people are using. The recommended 5w20 may be too thin. Just a theory on the oil, and I have said that before. Anyways, 5w50 amsoil, and now boosted and no ticks. Luck of the draw or it's the oil choice people make/Ford recommends.

    Great video as always. I do want to call a few things out. First the SMS you are referring to is kind of BS. The reason I am saying that is I have a 17 GT premium (no issues or tick) and the manual that came with my car does reference the typewriter tick. But attributes it to the grade of gas you put in it. My manual says for normal drive and enjoyment is to use 87 octane. Heavy use to use Mid 89-92 grade octane. Here is where it gets interesting. Use of 93 octane could cause engine tick on idle. If any damage is done as a result of using improper fuel, Ford will not fix or warranty the engine. I wonder what the manual for the 18-19 GT says since the engine now has Direct port injection. Just my take on it. Now people that are having the piston slap, that is totally different and Ford should be looking into the cause and fixing for customers. Now that this bulliten was released it's going to make people who have a genuine issue much harder to get Ford to fix.

    • @Zander13Productions

You wouldn't have a factory warranty on a stock car any way after a tune but now you have a much better engine that can take 1,000+ HP. Heck punch it out to a 5.2 or bigger.

    I would bet money this mysterious tick won’t be an issue for the 2020 builds, why because Ford knows they have an issue with the 18’s but they are gambling nobody sues them past taking a payout or a buy back because they know their consumers are the average working Joe that can’t afford a lengthy court battle. The fact that you can walk into a dealership take a test drive listen to the motor etc.. spend 40,000 then when you do routine maintenance on the car by changing the oil you get stuck with a noise that wasn’t there the day you purchased it. That to me is false advertisement by Ford and maybe the dealership. Just sad the consumer doesn’t have a way to battle this issue.

    Y'all should have bought 03 04 cobras. The noises from rattles and interior creeks would not let you hear any ticks lol

    Mustang6g has a ton of info about this. One thread is very interesting. A member installed another tensioner that eliminates the stretchy belt and he reports that his tic and rattle is almost completely gone. Yall check it out:

    Mine has the typewriter tick and I'm going to keep smashing the gas pedal, but it is still under warranty. So, I am not going to worry about it.

    I had the tick on my 2018 but it didn't bother me much. Mine wasn't that loud though.

    I own a 18 gt.i have multiple problems loud rattling bad fuel pump vacuum leaks and the car only has 1900 miles. What makes you say its normal. 1000s of people were getting engine changes because of the tick before the tsb. It's not normal. New engine should not sound like that. Fuck ford. People are tired of shity quality fords. No wonder American car manufacturers keep asking for money from government.

    my 18 started the tick before the first oil change still ticks at 10k miles I said oh well just a noise making power off road lts and Cold air more mods to come if it blows then I will argue with Ford that they have to prove the tune blew it if your not tuned and stock drive the shit out of it that's why we have warranty just saying drive it like you stole it.

    My 2018 has no noise at all.
    My 2011 TT with a Ford racing aluminator making 1000 whp+ ticks like a sumbitch.

    Got nothing to talk about ...so now you want to talk about something that you said you wouldn’t carry on about a tick that some have and some don’t....even though you don’t have that problem ...smells of hypocrisy
