That shows you how good these umps are to notice that the plate was never touched. A play like this could decide the game always pay attention to detail during the game
This is one reason I am against players coming off the bench to celebrate a homerun. Wait until the bases are touched and the player is heading toward the dugout before celebrating. This is a good example of a coach not teaching discipline.
As soon as the batter crosses home plate the Umpire puts a new ball in play. At that point, all the catcher had to do was to step on home plate and make an appeal. She did not have to wait for the runner to come back.
@@bobarnold1706 So when the umpire gave the new ball to the catcher, she should have immediately went to home plate stepped on it and called an appeal, then the batter is out? I can see where the run can't be counted until the plate is touched and she could be called out for being out of the baseline, but how can she be tagged out when the ball was a homeowner and no longer in play. A new ball is not in play until it has been pitchep

It's an appeal - same as if someone didn't tag on a flyout. Base path is only a thing when there's a defensive play on the baserunner, which isn't the case here.
For a out of the park homerun, you HAVE to physically touch EVERY bag! You learn that in little league. Shit, you know that from backyard league with friends 🙂
@@dickfitzwelliner2807 I mean, it is their life for them, but celebrating like that is absolutely absurd. We high fived and then I got more high fives in the dugout, but the game continued and there wasn’t a massive huddle at home plate. Act like you’ve been there before
Okay she should've touch the plate the first time but why does the catcher get to tag her out? If an outfielder somehow gets the ball and throws it to the plate they can't tag her out then so why does the catcher get a new ball and get to tag her?
So you can tag her out with a new ball while the play is dead before she goes to the dugout? She started to walk off then turned around to touch home plate but the ump doesn’t call her out until the catcher tags her with a new ball?
A home run is technically a dead ball 4 base award. This same ruling applies to every base awarded on a dead ball award. This is the same thing even in Major League Baseball that most people don't know. The Ump cannot give a ball back to the fielding Team until after the final bag has been crossed for the award. Once the runner crossed home plate and started cheering with her team the Umpire at that time would provide the new ball. The rule book states an appeal (which is what this was) can be made with any live/active ball before the next pitch or play. So even if the ball goes out of the park the appeal can be made with the new ball coming in. To make the new ball live/active though, it needs to go to the pitcher(as with any dead ball) and the pitcher touch the rubber. From there an appeal can be made on any base and any runner. Additionally, the runner could have returned to tag the base without chance of being out out before the appeal as long as she didn't leave the field of play, or didn't receive assistance from her team mates. Unfortunately as soon as her team mates gathered and she came in contact, it would have been considered assistance and she technically no longer had that opportunity. So even if she did touch the plate and an appeal was made, she would have been out.
not only all softball teams are bad sports, but all womens sports teams in general. Women overcompensate in their celebrations and unsportsmanlike behavior funded by the unethical and massively unequal Title IX which turns America's youngest female athletes into overfed, overfunded rape targets
The ump was staring down at the plate watching her fly the plate. He then hands the catcher the ball and most likely mumbles - she didn't touch the plate . . .
The only "dumb" thing here is that the player didn't have the presence of mind to touch the plate. Her opponents noticed, and she paid the price. Them's the rules...
If the game rules for running out of or leaving the base path are the same as baseball, the ump should've called the runner out post-play for leaving the immediate area of home plate and batter's box. That's technically when the play was over, the tag / call wasn't necessary, the ball was dead. Secondly, home plate team celebrations are traditionally reserved for "walk-off wins" and not when the game is still in active, especially the THIRD inning!? As well, if the manager was taking charge, he should've called the players back into the dugout which would've helped the runner stay focused on touching home plate and not be distracted by a group hug. This base running error was completely avoidable.
Home plate celebrations seem to be pretty common in NCAA softball. I know Oklahoma does it after every homer, and they have a lot of them, but I've seen quite a few other teams doing it as well. Watching players actually being able to celebrate good plays and not just "walk-off wins" is one of the things I really like about softball. I liked Bailey Hemphill and this was a bad mistake, but tying a game, even in the third inning, is something to celebrate, right? Or should all celebrations be limited to when you win? No celebrating TDs unless it's the end of the 4th quarter, no celebrating goals unless you know that it's the winning goal, no celebrating a great golf shot unless it just won you the match/tournament, etc. Sounds boring to me. Made a good play? Celebrate any time you make one, even if you want to look like a fool for celebrating anything when you are clearly out of the game. This celebration was fine, just make sure you touch all the bases.
Running out of the baselines only applies when avoiding being tagged out or giving up a base. This however is a dead ball ruling of which carries different guidelines. Stop and think about it, if you are that technical about the out of the baseline rules then you have to call out every runner rounding or turning to the next base.. That said... A home run is technically a dead ball 4 base award. This same ruling applies to every base awarded on a dead ball award. This is the same thing even in Major League Baseball that most people don't know. The Ump cannot give a ball back to the fielding Team until after the final bag has been crossed for the award. Good job on the catcher on attention to detail. The coach should be yelling at his player not the ump for not touching home plate. Obviously she knew she didn't touch it because she went back.
@@oksooners there is an assistant or whatever in white ... I didn't notice her the first time I saw but ... Even with all the excitement of a homerun you still have to pay attention to the fundamentals like touching the bag. I feel really bad for her but I promise you she will never make that mistake again. And I bet the coach will pound into these kids head from this day forward make sure you touch home plate.

Another question: isn't she out anyway because after not touching home plate she was crowded (touched) by her teammates for which it is against the rule to "assist" your teammate running the bases. So catcher never really had to touch her?
I’ve seen celebrations like this with walk-off home runs, but this was in the third inning. The lesson here is that the team should celebrate in the dugout, not on the field with a game still in progress. The entire team got too caught up with celebrating, and even if she had touched the plate AFTER she jumped over it, it’s almost impossible for an umpire to tell, because she’s in the middle of a scrum. It’s impossible to tell where the runners feet are amidst a crowd like that. Her coach has no business arguing. The team shouldn’t be on the field, especially as the game’s not over.
Leland Joseph Ummmmm there were *no* runners on base. The announcer clearly says this was the second of back-to-back home runs. So it's a triple, tagged out at home, *zero* RBI.
Pat O'Brien I honestly don't understand your confusion. She ran the bases and got tagged out at home. That's why it's a triple. She successfully touched first base, second base, and third base, didn't she? You must not understand the rules. You can hit the ball from here to the moon, but you still have to touch all the bases to register the home run.
Pat O'Brien You have the hold and control a ball for it to be considered a catch. A "catch" is not the act of the ball striking the glove. You're getting a bit silly with this now. No one playing catchin their backyard -- much less playing in a professional game -- would see a ball slam against your open hands and bounce off and then say "oh you caught it then dropped it". You're going out of your way to ignore the obvious and just be contrarian.
Pat O'Brien Actually, they do keep track of total bases, in two stats, one called (obviously) total bases, and another called slugging percentage. It's just part of the rules, you have to touch the bases for it to count. I guess it's like in basketball having to shoot free throws after getting fouled.
Pat O'Brien I guess as an Australian you're used to watching cricket and seeing 4s and 6s automatically register without the runners having to jog between the wickets? Lmao
She is out the second a player or coach touches her to get her to go back to touch. The way this is done is weird. She should be out it’s no different than a third base coach pushing a runner to help them score or a third base coach tapping a runner to get them to steal. You can’t do it. Now if a player or coach said go touch the plate without touching her then she would have been safe. Moral of the story touch every base every time and you won’t look like a jackass that doesn’t know how to run the bases
Actually it is different than if the player is contacted by the coach at third base. Remember the runner is said to have touched the base once they pass the base. At this point coaches interference does not apply.
@@formercoach1202 I'm really at a loss why you say that, that is obviously false. Because you pass a base it is not accepted that you touched it, where do you get that? You've never seen the countless times that the team on defense throws the ball to the second baseman, third baseman, and tags the base because they thought the runner missed it?
I see this happen in Little League and other recreational leagues very often and I am talking more than just missing Home. Other bases too. I see this quite often in travel ball games as well. Very rare in Middle and High School or Legion games. I would say 9.8 out of 10 times the coaches never catch it too. Listening for appeals that never come.
But how does this turn into a "tag" play when she went back to touch home? I can see her getting called out for being out of the basepath (or something), but not sure why the catcher can tag her out on a home run.
She has until she enters the dugout to return to touch the plate and the out call for missing the plate is an appeal play after the ball is put back in play. Tot a l umpire fail.
Could you imagine in Men's baseball if there was a HR in the third inning that only ties the score and all the players surrounding homeplate in celebration ...THE NEXT BATTER WOULD BE BEANED!! This type of celebration is not a game winning hit should not be even happening. Welcome to Women's softball
First year I played baseball in the 4th grade, first HR I did that. Except I didn't jump it, I veered off a few inches heading toward my dugout and got glove tagged. Hard learned lessons are never forgotten, and I put a cleat square in the middle of every plate afterward 😂
lololol. This is why the entire team should stay in the dugout on a 3rd inning home run. hahahahahaha. It's so embarassing, like little kid tee ball celebration
Like, Jim Brown early 70"s spike the ball before entering into the touch down zone. Also, like others celebrating Home runs or those thinking the game is over. There's an old saying "Don't count your eggs before they hatch".
My issue is that she did not leave the field of play. In baseball (Federation Rules) I believe the player missing home plate would have to leave the field of play to the dugout. Then the fielders need to appeal the play at home. I don't think they would have been out in high school baseball. Obviously I know NCAA and softball rules differ. Does anyone know if this was actually done properly?
I’m very confused, even if the run counted, why are they celebrating a tie run like they won the World Series. Like cmon, games not over even if that run counted.
My question is: Can you retrieve the ball that was hit outside the park and use it to tag someone out? Isn’t it an automatic home run? I agree she needs to touch home base though.
CORRECT CALL: Keep an eye on the Asst Coach in white at the plate trying to get to the player who hit the HR. On the way to the dugout she finally gets her attention. Watch at 45 sec mark as she approaches the conversation with Ump and Head Coach. She immediately KNOWS its correct and turns looking frustrated... During the replay at the 1:15 mark you can clearly see the Catcher after being handed the ball (back in play) pointing to the plate aka appealing.
No time frame really. If the player doesnt touch the plate and makes it to the dugout the defensive team can appeal and the batter will be ruled out. In this case once she crossed, without touching home plate, the umpire is allowed to give the next ball to the defense. Once they have it they are allowed to tag the runner out for missing the plate.
I admit I don't know the rules that well and I do understand that she missed home plate however the ball which she was tagged out with was the replacement ball after she hit the first one over the wall. Does that make any difference in the tag? Just wondering
and just to clarify: as soon as the plate umpire hands the new ball (since the home run ball is out of play the instant it crosses over the fence and lands somewhere) to any defensive player, all appeal rules come into effect, both live ball and dead ball appeals. if the batter/runner had continued into the dugout, the defense had two options: (1) dead ball appeal. take the new ball in play, indicate the appeal to the home plate umpire, and step on home plate. out. (2) live ball appeal. wait until the plate umpire puts the new ball in play (probably when the next batter steps into the batter's box), indicate the appeal to the home plate umpire, and step on home plate. out. since the batter/runner who missed home plate CHOSE to return to the plate, the defense has the dead ball appeal option of tagging her, just as if she were approaching home plate from third base the first time. all this because the batter/runner chose NOT to touch home plate the first time. think about that for a minute... she didn't MISS the base. she chose NOT to touch it.
I mean you don't touch home plate you don't get a run..kinda the oldest rule in the book.
Actually it does count. If they don't see the miss and do a proper appeal, it counts.
brandon242 ya but there was no way to get her out because the ball went over the wall

@@DanielBarberMusic Thanks for your reply. Makes sense. So the umpire is acting as one of the fielding players throwing the ball back to the catcher.
That shows you how good these umps are to notice that the plate was never touched. A play like this could decide the game always pay attention to detail during the game
Umpire's job. One of the things players should be taught as well. Make sure runners touch every base.
DON'T Showboat!!!!!! Not on My Team. Lesson Learn!!!
This is one reason I am against players coming off the bench to celebrate a homerun. Wait until the bases are touched and the player is heading toward the dugout before celebrating. This is a good example of a coach not teaching discipline.
When I coached little league my kids were only allowed to go out in front of the dugout and wait.
Have the party in the dugout, not on the field.
Correct. Patti Gasso does not teach good sportsmanship either.

Where did the ball come from? It was over the fence. How do you use a different ball to tag out the runner?
The ball used to tag her out was born at 0:16.
@@pf2135 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
It isn't a 'live' ball. You have to use an appeal before the first pitch. Bad call.
Because, that's what she did if you think about it. She stepped on home and said appeal and I guess to make triple sure, she tagged her too. Does all that jive?

If he fielded the ball, he would probably fumble it on his first play on his new team also.

I can see where the run can't be counted until the plate is touched and she could be called out for being out of the baseline, but how can she be tagged out when the ball was a homeowner and no longer in play. A new ball is not in play until it has been pitchep
@@johnalton4661 The umpire just pulls another ball out like it's the one that was hit over the wall. This makes the sport look absolutely stupid. If you hit a homerun you should be able to just go to the dugout. No running necessary, you did it, great job, sit down.
You don't have to touch any plate or bags. You'll be out and probably suspended but you still don't have to.

Missed the rest of the season, and was never the same player after that. I understand the emotion, but just touch the damn plate and stop showboating.
That was a heads up moment for the catcher as she stood there watching along with the umpire to make sure she touched home plate, the umpire can see it it but won't call it if it is not appealed by by the other team, and you can clearly see both the umpire and the catcher looking on as she approched home plate. You literally have to touch the plate, end of story
Fair enough, however, why the need for the tag? Wouldn't she be automatically out for leaving the base path? Please clear this up for me.
It's an appeal - same as if someone didn't tag on a flyout. Base path is only a thing when there's a defensive play on the baserunner, which isn't the case here.
Awesome, thank you.
Actually you don't. If they don't see the miss and do a proper appeal, run counts.

Its a softball tradition
Maybe they should wait a little beyond the plate so that Chubby McFAILURE doesn't miss the plate again!
It’s the umpire’s job to make sure they touch home plate
Right call or not, the ump had guts to make it.

Nothing wrong with that .. That rule even applys in the major leagues..
It looks as if the umpire communicated something to the catcher.
Statline: 1 HR, 0 RBIs
Lmao
That’s what happens when you “Showboat”……..Karma claps back. Umpire was right…..
Hahah Jom boy needs to ROAST this!
The fact that the coach is complaining about this is enough proof he didn’t watch her miss the plate completely lmao
No, she still would have been out because the catcher both tagged the plate and put a tag on her before she made it back.
@@formercoach1202
I'm really at a loss why you say that, that is obviously false. Because you pass a base it is not accepted that you touched it, where do you get that? You've never seen the countless times that the team on defense throws the ball to the second baseman, third baseman, and tags the base because they thought the runner missed it?
Ur right I didn't think about that.Shes out.
This happens quite often..I was a volunteer umpire for Little League back in the 1980's & saw this kind of thing happen ..
It has been a rule forever. Part of the details in the game.
I dn see how you can blame the rule.
That Bama Coach was right there at home plate for a reason, as there is NO JUSTIFICATION for him to even be there, he knew & still complained.

He actually put a new ball into the play! To me, once he does that, the previous play should be over. She was not tagged out with the same ball.
But how does this turn into a "tag" play when she went back to touch home? I can see her getting called out for being out of the basepath (or something), but not sure why the catcher can tag her out on a home run.
Mark has never played a game of baseball
@@Boston_Brown wrong, idiot. I played through college.

Because that’s the one thing she should make damn sure of in that moment.
lololol. This is why the entire team should stay in the dugout on a 3rd inning home run. hahahahahaha. It's so embarassing, like little kid tee ball celebration
You don't see that in MLB
Celebrating a touchdown early and losing the ball before crossing the goal line has entered the chat..
Like, Jim Brown early 70"s spike the ball before entering into the touch down zone.
Also, like others celebrating Home runs or those thinking the game is over.
There's an old saying "Don't count your eggs before they hatch".
Why were they celebrating like she hit a walk-off?
No the dumbest play in softball history is watching random grownups play
Is there a certain time frame to touch it or if you go past it then it’s too late? It was a Home Run, not a play at the plate.
There are a lot of stupid people that don't understand that rules are rules!
and just to clarify: as soon as the plate umpire hands the new ball (since the home run ball is out of play the instant it crosses over the fence and lands somewhere) to any defensive player, all appeal rules come into effect, both live ball and dead ball appeals. if the batter/runner had continued into the dugout, the defense had two options: (1) dead ball appeal. take the new ball in play, indicate the appeal to the home plate umpire, and step on home plate.
