That would be actually relatively fair, it wouldn’t be putting them out of work, therefore not triggering the umpire Union and the major leagues get rid of the incompetent guys
Oh! NO! NO! NO! I don't want him umping my 5 year old grandson's T-Ball games! He would even terrible selling shoes. May he need to shovel $hit at the local stock yards 18 hours a day.
Once you know Angel Hernandez is umping a game he always seems to become part of the game’s story - when he should be working to be invisible. Horrible ambassador for the game.
In his book, “Baseball is a Funny Game”, Joe Garagiola states that the best compliment you can give an umpire is after the game, you don’t remember his name.
Agreed. The only reason he's still calling games is due to the union and the lawsuits he's brought against MLB. Those types of lawsuits don't have to be true to have the desired impact.
Add Eric Gregg to this list. As a Braves fan, I'll never forget how bad he was in the 1997 playoffs. He was calling strikes so far out of the strike zone that the catcher was literally setting up behind the batter's box. And Levan Hernandez just kept throwing "strikes" out there---the Braves had zero chance of hitting any of those pitches. So, Angel Hernandez and Eric Gregg are the worst. And Angel was always looking to start something with players rather than being an agent of calm. He consistently instigates confrontations.
That may be true .... Buuuuuuuut I clearly remember Braves catchers setting up a couple inches off the plate and out of the strike zone in the early to mid 90's and whenever Tom Glavine or Avery hit the mitt in that spot it was called a strike - It wasn't. The overhead shots clearly showed the ball an inch or more off the plate when it passed by.
Eric had that terrible game, it was like he was having a seizure or something, it was horrific, but the guy really was a good umpire, especially on the bases, he had some tough games behind the plate but he was a solid ump, Charlie Williams however was another terrible ump.
Glad to see that slide into Piazza included here. I've been looking for that clip for awhile. Runner was 100 percent dead to rights out, but was called safe because Hernandez wanted to go home after a long day.
I can tell you why he's still employed... Union. That's it. He's part of the MLBUA, the MLB doesn't have the balls to fire him and face the legal battle that will inevitably come. If the union didn't exist Angel would be an after thought.
its the mlbs fault for not thinking that such an occurrence can happen, if someone is terrible at their job its up to the employer to include what qualifies as being terrible at the job which will lead to their termination
This is so true. I am surprised that pitchers and catchers don’t have a sign that says high fastball I’ll duck and let it hit Angel in the face. At least in hockey we can shoot the puck at them and say oops I was trying to clear it around the boards
I don't mind when Umps make bad calls. They are human. It happens. It isn't great, but okay, it's expected that even the best umpire will occasionally get a call wrong. What I hate is the ego and the smugness they show after it, playing the victim and antagonising the players and coaches.

a few months the local jail is not so bad, as all the other inmates will treat you like a hero,. And if you take your fingers and jamb them deep in his eyes, he will not have his job, and maybe then he would realize what an ass he is.
The only way to get rid of him is for every manager to get to the field, wait for game time, then say, "Oh Angel is on? We'll wait for another umpire." Then refuse to take the field, fines or not. If enough teams just refuse to play when he's on crew, fans will demand money back, and MLB will have to do something.
Imagine being a pitcher and seeing that Angel's there when you get to the building? You're like please not at home plate, please no! Like that boss everyone hates to deal with but you have to get along to keep your job.
And while your average Major League player can absorb a $10000 fine no problem, it still seems disproportionate for merely expressing an honest analysis of an umpire's performance.
He's a pitcher's nightmare for sure but he's also a hitter's nightmare. The one consistent component of Senor Hernandez's game is his everpresent inconsistencies. He is a very shameful black eye on the MLB umpire's union.
Indonesian soccer referees--one of the lousiest in the sports industry-- have had better decisions than Hernandez for the last six years. Literally down horrendous.
wouldn't be surprised if Angel's name is dropped like Tim Donaghy some day. I'm not exactly a virtuoso in my job but nobody can be *that* bad that consistently unless they're fixing games
Many decades ago I maintained the umps will change the strike zone to make games more competitive, under a sort of mercy rule letting the team that's behind catch up. Many decades later I saw a Sabermetrics style statistical study that concluded just that. As for this ump, he may be just trying to get into the limelight due to psychological issues.
Absolutely. If you go back and watch when the Marlins "won" the world series, you'll see some pretty outrageous strike zones. There are many more examples too. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Angel behind the plate.
@@ItsAllAboutGuitar If you're referring to the game Livan Hernandez was getting strike calls with pitches a foot off the plate, that wasn't Angel. That was Eric Gregg. And he never umpired a postseason game again for the rest of his life.
They even showed the clip at Wrigley Field when the Bears' Steve McMichael, about to sing the 7th inning stretch, threatened to take him on for a really bad call against the Cubs.
Hilarious that a pitcher says "wow" to a strike because he knew it wasn't. Then there is the confused outreached hands of a ball that went right down the middle of the plate that is called a ball. I'm 100% sure a pitcher knows if a pitch is a ball or strike but they can't be relied upon to make the call as they're on a team that benefits with those calls.... But they know.
Played baseball into my 30's. I umpired for1 year to help out some friends. I did 10-12 yr olds and 13-15. I never umpired before and it was tough. That said I still think an umpire who is doing Big League games should never get 4out of 5 calls WRONG.WOW! And after watching his balls and strike calls, he should have been gone a while ago. Sorry Angel !
Almost a decade ago, I watched a game that hernandez worked. After the game (decided by hernandez, not the world class athletes), I wrote MLB an email letting them know that I would not watch another MLB game until they fired all the bad umpires, or replaced them with technology. They have done neither, and I have not watched another game on TV or in person.

MLB Newest Rule: The more errors the umpire make, he gets demoted back to the Minor League till he works on his calls.
Are you referring to Ángel Hernandéz?
Yep. Demote him.
That would be actually relatively fair, it wouldn’t be putting them out of work, therefore not triggering the umpire Union and the major leagues get rid of the incompetent guys
If that was the case, Angel Hernandez would be umpiring a T-ball game.
@@NJGuy1973 And even that, badly!
Oh! NO! NO!
That's why I'm not into basketball. The refs have way too much subjective control over the game.
It seems to be overly complicated to find the Umpire schedule, but I only ever seek it to find out if Angel is umping in a game for my team.
What's his annual salary in bribe money?
That's so racist
@@guitarhero6584 no such thing. There has been nothing racist here.
I’m not into baseball but this man still managed to piss me off by watching this vid! Bruh anyone kicked his ass lol

I think Joe West needs an honorable mention, at least.
@@FHL-Devils iconic response. Had me dying

Joe West was once a decent NL Umpire in his early days. Oh well...
In his book, “Baseball is a Funny Game”, Joe Garagiola states that the best compliment you can give an umpire is after the game, you don’t remember his name.
Just like an offensive lineman in the NFL. If you never hear his name, he played a good game.
Greg Bibson is an exception 😎
RIGHT!!! We are supposed to show up and the only thing the managers know about us is we did the pregame meeting at home plate.
@@chrism.1749 Joe Thomas the other one.
Same with hockey referees.
Agreed. The only reason he's still calling games is due to the union and the lawsuits he's brought against MLB. Those types of lawsuits don't have to be true to have the desired impact.
Hernandez is making a case for the dreaded robo-ump.
I literally cannot watch games when he's behind home plate. He is so incompetent, so arrogant, it sends my blood pressure through the roof.
You just described my ex-wife 😂
Imagine Joe Buck calling a game and Angel Hernandez is behind the plate.... only in my nightmares
Why would you put that nightmare in someone’s head.........
omg...
And Joe west on first yikes
Don't understand the hate for buck. I think he's just fine
I’ve seen that game…
i’m a beginner in baseball from the UK and i’ve heard of him 🤣🤣🤣
I think that’s the worst insult an umpire could ever hear
I wouldn't be surprised if Vladimir Putin heard of him.
Came back two years since this video dropped. He's still calling the game and he's even worse now.
I think Gregg had money on that game. Those balls were ,18 inches off the plate.
That statement takes balls!!! Maddux didn't throw a legit strike for a decade!!!
Add Bob Davidson
The worst part of unions is they protect the worst and the laziest.
its the mlbs fault for not thinking that such an occurrence can happen, if someone is terrible at their job its up to the employer to include what qualifies as being terrible at the job which will lead to their termination
Same as any other union, all they do is protect the worthless f***s that can't do their job.
BS
Yes. Without the union, he would have been fired 20 years ago.
We all know Angel goes home, puts on his heels, smears his lips stick and cries in his pillow
That's why I cut Jim Joyce some slack about the Gallaraga perfect game. He knew he screwed up and showed remorse. Angel Hernandez would never do that.
@@jasondyrkacz8270 Jim Joyce is a legend

I mind. It's not a difficult job and they are supposedly the best at what they do.
I'm still waiting on the day a player who had enough, knocks Hernandez lights out. Unfortunately, the player will be arrested for assault, and Hernandez will still have a job.
a few months the local jail is not so bad, as all the other inmates will treat you like a hero,. And if you take your fingers and jamb them deep in his eyes, he will not have his job, and maybe then he would realize what an ass he is.
Depends on how hard they hit him though… 😉
IAN Kinsler would've been a good candidate for doing just that, especially with the bat in his hand!!
I will personally pay that player’s bail. Whoever it is.
Don't forget Joe West he not too far behind 🤣
CB Buknor
I don't watch baseball at all. I know two names currently involved in baseball, Joe West and Angel Hernandez. Not for good reasons.
As a Giants fan I learned about Joe West. He obviously hated MadBum. He didn’t even try to hide it.
Worst five umps:
Angel Hernandez
Joe West
CB Bucknor
Laz Diaz
Alfonso Marquez
The only way to get rid of him is for every manager to get to the field, wait for game time, then say, "Oh Angel is on? We'll wait for another umpire." Then refuse to take the field, fines or not.
If enough teams just refuse to play when he's on crew, fans will demand money back, and MLB will have to do something.
Damn, Hernandez created 34 accounts to dislike this video
Fellow umpires. They're like the blue wall.
Also Joe Torre and his friends for mispronouncing his name.
joe tor
LOL
That's because he mispronounced Joe Torre LMAO people are ridiculous
Imagine being a pitcher and seeing that Angel's there when you get to the building? You're like please not at home plate, please no! Like that boss everyone hates to deal with but you have to get along to keep your job.
I would have the same response as Michael Scott did when he saw Toby back at Dunder-Mifflin. "God please no....no....nooooooo!!!!!!"
What Angel really meant was "They discriminated against me because of my incompetence".
Lol that look back @0:21 when he doesn't get the most obvious strike call. Like, it's not even anger, just pure shock.
wouldn't be surprised if Angel's name is dropped like Tim Donaghy some day.
Interesting. If I'm MLB, I'd be inclined to look into that.

The best one was Ian Kinsler gave hernandez the bird and asked " how many fingers do I have up " 😂
They even showed the clip at Wrigley Field when the Bears' Steve McMichael, about to sing the 7th inning stretch, threatened to take him on for a really bad call against the Cubs.
I watched that game and remember it well. He made a terrible call. Hernandez actually had him kicked out for it.
I remember seeing that!!
Joe West isn't far behind.
Don’t forget about CB Buckner, I think he is worse than Joe West and that is pretty bad
Bucknor , sorry for the spelling error but he umps worse than I spell
Sad thing is, West used to be a good umpire....Hernandez( and Bucknor) have ALWAYS been worthless
Joe West ejected Mr. Padre!!! Tony Gwynn, terrible umpire.
Lol nobody cares, including MLB that u don't watch any baseball games in TV. Ur pretty stupid for thinking writing an email to them is going to persuade them to fire all the bad umps
At least you stuck with your word
MLB will do nothing, unless the the tv network's & all their 💰💰💰 insist upon it. It's basically the same in every major sport, hell NASCAR & The NFL have been letting the Network's run their sport for the last couple decade's now! 🤷🏻♂️
That’s petty
May not know the name of most MLB Umpires but I do know how to pronounce Joe Torre...
Fine for you. Now try to read pinned comments. Maybe in your next life you will get that.

Joe torre. Pronounced Torry. Is one of the greatest managers the game has ever seen. You have to get that right. Just saying 😏
When Mongo called him out, that was my favorite baseball moment ever 🤣
Send him down to officiate in the Minors, never let him near a Major league game ever again? The Clubs do it with players that don't measure up.
I'm waiting for a manager to walk out of the dugout and eject the ump lol That would be the greatest laugh ever!
We would have to bring back Earl Weaver God rest his soul
From my understanding, MLB have been trying to get rid of Angel for years, but the Union protects him.
Get rid of Joe West and Jerry Crawford, too. Keep Jim Joyce.
Imagine an air traffic controller, a heart surgeon or a knife thrower at a circus with the same level of competence as him.

He'd be in jail
Well glad they deal with games like Hernandez does.
I see dead people.
If Angel Hernandez were a firefighter, he’d likely be seen throwing left and rights at the flames.
Angel Hernandez will end up in the Hall of Fame as the umpire that inspired the the fans, teams, and league to finally accept robo-umps. He will be remembered as a hero to MLB.
I've been ready to accept a robot umps in baseball since before we had the tech to do it. The game has been mostly a crap shoot since the very beginning. Any close game could have went either way.
Yeah I agree. Bring on the bots. Too many terrible calls.

How Angel hasn’t been fired or demoted to the minors is beyond me....
This was recommended to me while watching Key and Peele sketches and I feel like that basically sums up this ump's career.
