Vats Iyengar Thats cause Shawn was a big fan of Eric Johnson and the lick is nearly 1:1 from Cliffs of dover, so Shawn riped it from Eric and Gutherie got it from shawn - lickception.
Guthrie had to get attention and raise some eyebrows by transcribing Shawn Lane- It's pretty damn hard nowadays to sound entirely original, but I think Guthrie def sounds like himself. He's mastered every technique, how's awesome phrasing, and has crazy feel/intensity, and play just about anything
In my opinion, Guthrie is lightyears ahead and where Shawn ever was. Speed should not be used to measure guitar superiority, that being said though..i loved the Powers of Ten, when you actually got to hear Shawn slow down and put emphasis on note quality, not quanitity. Guthrie is king and will be until it evolves to its next level.
Pretty sure that if you really want to hear where Lane got to before he died, you should mostly ignore his solo work and check out the stuff he did with Jonas Hellborg. "Temporal Analogues of Paradise", "Good People in Times of Evil", "Zenhouse" are good touching points.
Fuck you reached new levels of delusion on the internet. Even GG admits Shawn is untouchable. Shawn can play this ON THE PIANO. He was untouchable, his raw genetics allowed him to play complex phrasing faster and cleaner than anyone. His style was GUITAR, it was MUSIC. GG is definitely not as fast and his fusion style can be done by plenty of guitarists. Thanks for the laugh though. "Light years ahead of Shawn Lane" lol.
@Cesar Rabbit thats ridiculous. GG may not play as fast, however he could technically play Lane under the table. Speed isnt the mark of a great guitarist, which Lane was so dont get me wrong there, however Guthries note choice and understanding of musical composition is light years beyond anything Lane could ever have achieved.
@@shredgplayer5616 When you discover more guitar shredders you notice Paul isnt even the fastest xD but he's a great guitar player. Great speed and technique
very nice licks ! i understand all expect the right hand! all are alternative picking? Or, e.g. at 1:22 when u change string (b string) u start with downstroke?
You can play slow. It's a matter of taste.Eric "slowhand"Clapton example. Playing fast you have to learn how play with minimal force. Light touch and strings low.
Pink Floyd 1973 .. "Money" from DSOTM could be thought of as 7/8 . But it is probably not scored that way. That's the immediate one the jumps to my mind, there are many more with this feel.
Great transcription and performances, except for the "wiggle and strangle" with wide vibrato or bends sharp or slides at the end of many phrases...Why?
JD0x0 No doubt, this was the easy stuff by Shawn Lane. The thing to remember, too, is Shawn did this while battling arthritis from the age of 12 on!!!!! Imagine what he could have achieved had he not developed arthritis!
Hey.... Everyone. Please remember the van halen. Is not only the best of all time... But,he's also God. Shawn Lane..... Is the SHIT. Maybe someday the van halen fan will realize that.... But there too busy dancing the night away. Lol..... 🔊🔊🔊🔊🎸
Whatever happened to Shawn Lane? Sometimes fancy licks sound cool slow.. nothing wrong with that.. sometimes they sound better real slow..not fast all the time..
People like to explore the limits of how far they can push technicality. Its fun. It’s actually not always about playing a moving Dave gilmour style emotional solo, despite what people like you always think. Some times what a song needs is adrenaline. If someone listens to this and feels inspiration, excitement and awe then who’s to say it’s not real music. It’s still provoking emotion is it not? Just a different kind.
Hey nicka! Could you play thru one time each with feeling? Say at metronome 220 BPM? And, BTW, there is NO such time signature as 7/8! Name me one kick-ass tune, besides Floyd's 'Money', that has 7 in the numerator? Huh? You can't do it! So go back to your weird triplets and quintuplets...grab your codpiece and call Ian Anderson for help! ;)
Do you even know anything about theory? There is a 7/8 signature. BTW I honestly don't understand why are you saying that, do you actually think you are better than this guy?
No, you just count : 1-2-3-4 / 1-2-3... 8/8 is just 4/4, once again basic mathematics U__u. And so it begins the learning of "little more complex" musical knowledges. I don't say it's a popular rythm, i just say IT exist and used a lot in Jazz, Metal Prog and Classical Music . Duh
Al Ward you are fuckin with me arent you 😂 joe is far from just blues dude he can play perfect country, jazz, rock, bluegrass, classical and can sound like a shit load of guitar players from eric johnson to bb king. joe bonamassa knows a whole lot of different styles and he writes hit album after hit album congrats guthrie govan is fushion great job joe is not only a guitar god he sells millions of albums and has a huge following for being a performer and amazing song writer
dude no one sees joe as a fusion player i don't think he sees himself that way. al ward is right my friend Guthrie is like the king fusion man maybe your just not familiar with this genre. if you were you wouldn't have mentioned a blues rock player.
Just because he plays a lot of technical intervallic stuff and transcribes a lot of Shawn Lane stuff doesn't mean he's a copycat. He has been transcribing a LOT of stuff from John Scofield, Steve Vai, Larry Carlton, SRV, George Benson, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Pass, Steve Morse, Dimebag Darrell, Albert Lee back in the early 90's, not only Lane's stuff. Guthrie's biggest inspirations are experimental/progressive musicians like Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck when it comes to songwriting. I don't hear many similarities between Lane and Govan when it comes to guitar playing. Most of the time his playing sound a lot more like Greg Howe/Steve Vai/Brett Garsed than Shawn Lane.
Georgios Karaspyros "every clueless person is stating big opinions without any background or musical knowledge" and yet you follow this alleged trend.... of cluelessness and lack of muscal knowledge? take your own advice and just go watch a beiber video
I always feel like I can play pretty fast. Maybe at not quite Vinnie Moore speeds. Then I hear something like Guthrie or Lane and am totally humbled. I think it's just not in my DNA to be able to play at those ridiculous speeds.
***** are you referring to picking hand or fretting hand? I assume you mean picking hand anchored with ring and pinkie. I used to play that way then slowly switched to almost floating style a la paul gilbert. I've noticed Michael Angelo Batio has the anchored style and he is amazingly fast. Hmm
I wish Guthrie a long fruitful life as he will have more time to delight us with his incredible musicality
Fun fact Guthrie actually first got attention from Guitar World by transcribing Shawn Lane's playing
ive been buying guitar techniques solely for his column since 1996, i still have every issue
Do you know which tune it was that secured him the job?
@stratosaurusrex3399 it was "Get you back" the song he played. There's a version on RUclips of it.
Guthrie is better than Shawn imo
Guthrie’s technique has no limits. These licks are blindingly fast.
Guthrie is like the 1 dude who made it though the instructional DVDs hahahah
Him and Roy marchbank
They weren't even on DVD to begin with, but on VHS. Really old-school.
Must have the ear of a God, transcribing Lane
and brain
lol I thought the slo-mo version was full speed :O
Seriously, this is mental!
Example 8 sounds a bit like Eric Johnson. And Example 9 is from 'Gray Pianos Flying' (my favourite tune on "Powers of Ten"), if I'm not mistaken.
Vats Iyengar Thats cause Shawn was a big fan of Eric Johnson and the lick is nearly 1:1 from Cliffs of dover, so Shawn riped it from Eric and Gutherie got it from shawn - lickception.
That's true and they played together too. It's video somewhere in tube.
Yeah, Guthrie did good work here but there was only one Shawn Lane.
Has anyone ever found a transcription of shawns let it be solo with paul Gilbert? Omg I'd love to find that
Example 10 is from Rules Of The Game.
I hear you and often feel like that for a short moment, then i run to my guitar. Its so much fun i can never stop playing.
Quo Tanzient OK armchair commando. you don't have shit on someone 1/10 Guthrie's talent. why don't you blow us all away with your skills.

Lick 7 is West Side Boogie.
Shit I need to quadruple watch this. Thank god for the 10 second rewind on youtube and thank god for your miraculous transcriptions!
4:18 Reminds me of Cliffs of Dover
Thanks for sharing
This is incredibly fast.
More fast than licks of Paul Gilbert.
All is possible.
@@shredgplayer5616 When you discover more guitar shredders you notice Paul isnt even the fastest xD but he's a great guitar player. Great speed and technique
Now play this at 2x speed
very nice licks ! i understand all expect the right hand! all are alternative picking? Or, e.g. at 1:22 when u change string (b string) u start with downstroke?
Anyone got any higher quality of the tabs?
Can you play Roy March bank?
ex. 7 must be from the intro to Westside Boogie, right?
Why not anymore? Be a fan of all ^^
very good
I wish i could play a 5th as great as shawn played fast lines!
great video
Do you have guthrie´s lessons ?
i'd be lucky to play those at 40bpm
Thanks for this!!!
thanks for the share
Can I have 40BPM version, please? ;)
That’s IMPOSSIBLY fast!!!!! Wow!!!!!
nice
example 8 = cliffs of dover lol
from power licks power solos. shawn is the authority.
4:25 reminds me of Eric Johnson's Cliffs Of Dover!
You can play slow. It's a matter of taste.Eric "slowhand"Clapton example.
Playing fast you have to learn how play with minimal force.
Light touch and strings low.
Is it from magazine or Creative guitar?
is there anywhere the pdf for download? I really need a printed version of this for my practice routine.
Full 4k real no fake
I take it the uploader is a Ron Jarzombek fan ;)
i have all of these magazines
2:53 Holy shit he nailed that fast augmented licks !!
It was at that point I went from "I have got to try this" to full on "Fuck that. I'm not going to live long enough to ever get that good."
Pink Floyd 1973 .. "Money" from DSOTM could be thought of as 7/8 .
But it is probably not scored that way.
That's the immediate one the jumps to my mind, there are many more with this feel.
....?
What is the song at the end??
Guthrie Govan - Sevens
the name of the track at the end ?
Sevens, Guthrie Govan.
Off the album Erotic Cakes.
Anybody knows the ending song's name?
Sevens.
Fookin' Goothrie!!!
Great transcription and performances, except for the "wiggle and strangle" with wide vibrato or bends sharp or slides at the end of many phrases...Why?
The low quality makes this vid sound and look like a 90's vid game ... (my opinion)
I love when he speaks "The Late, Great, Shawn Lane..."
i cant see any nymber from the tabs -.-
Read the notes
u think i can read notes?
Anybody wants to buy my guitar? Think I'll go play a tambourine.
Guitar Techniques magazine
ahahah ron is amazing too :)
omg guthrie...
You mean Shawn ;) even Guthrie admits that Shawn has done things with his fingers that no other human will be able to achieve.
JD0x0 No doubt, this was the easy stuff by Shawn Lane. The thing to remember, too, is Shawn did this while battling arthritis from the age of 12 on!!!!! Imagine what he could have achieved had he not developed arthritis!
Damn, just stop guys... You're such expertts on making me depressed, fuckk...
Eduardo Diniz Ha, I have been playing for 31 years, and every time I listen to Shawn Lane or Guthrie Govan, I feel like burning my guitar, lol.
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover 4:13 ))
Lol, this is inhuman.... They're not of our kind, they're a much more advanced species 0__0
the name spastic science is terrific, too bad it's over the heads of most people here

Is this shit possible in double speeds????
You mean 360 bpm?
So tasty....
Whatever happened to Shawn Lane? Sometimes fancy licks sound cool slow.. nothing wrong with that.. sometimes they sound better real slow..not fast all the time..
he died
Thats it? No further details? If you know, post it up, dont say google it because google often does not know..
Michael Craig He started to deal with some lung problems later in life. He died young in his 40s.
It's all on Wikipedia
Not bad, Guthrie. The attempt was admirable.
What do you mean 'attempt?' The licks were taken from Lane's songs. Guthrie played them flawlessly, did he not?
I never understood, what that guitar highspeed bullshit has to do with music.
Gerd Progel do you mean, why do people like high speed playing so much?
It can be used to great effect but not when everything is lightning fast. I like some of the licks here played in the slow tempo.

Critisising the arguably best guitarist we have on this world now by talking shit. thats how you do it
This is not even close, if you want to learn Shawn Lane stuff look for power solos and power licks
Yes it is most of them (if not all) are literally transcriptions of licks from Shawn’s songs…
Yes, but it's only the simplier stuff not the "scarier" stuff.....
The Crown was passed to Joe Bonamassa
Joe who...Joe is not a fusion guitarist..Blues only.. Sorry..Like Joe but the torch goes to guthrie for shred fusions and a lot of other styes.
