I remember meeting Shawn while he toured with Black Oak Arkansas in Mexico City with singer Jim Dandy when he was 16 . Even at tgat young age he was an incredible musician and he was incredibly humble about his gifted playing. He is sorely missed but never forgotten. Love you bro ! Rock on forever !!
I think it's really interesting that he always starts shredding with an upstroke; I've found it definitely helps with fast passages if you can get used to it!
Thank god! There is hope for me. My angle of attacked opposite like his. I thought I would have to unlearn twenty years of picking the opposite way of 99% of the players. Now I know there’s hope
Some people just have God given talent. You can practice all you want, but practice doesn't make you play that clean. You can either do it or you can't. Gilbert or Malmsteen doesn't plan faster today than they did 20 years ago. They may learn different phrasing or techniques, but I don't believe you gain speed the more you practice. There's just a hand/brain capability you can't teach.
How can your mind keep up with that speed? It's one thing to practice a song and be able to do fast parts without conscious thought. But he just whips out these fast licks on the spot.
I have several cats. Cats are fast. However, if my cat learned to play guitar it's unlikely that he could play as fast as Mr. Lane. Highly unlikely even. Cheers!
Steve Monroe There is a story out there (I don't know how true it is) that Shawn Lane opened for Yngwie once and after his set, Yngwie refused to come out and perform.
Pedro Omar Soto Where is your evidence that Shawn opened for Rising Force? I would say those musical styles wouldn't be a good match for any concert promoter to have done. Where is the news article that mentioned Yngwie refusing to do a concert and all the fans getting pissed? Plus, 1985 Lane was playing with a Memphis bar band, The Willys, so no, he didn't open for Malmsteen.
Best picker ever. Lacked taste though unfortunately. Could play good bluesy stuff. I like how he holds the pick like George benson. More substantial sound. Wish he had some acoustic stuff because he probably would’ve been super fast on acoustic as well.
Why do these guys always use reverb, delay, etc., when trying to do an instructional video? It's just plain stupid. Heck, why do they even use distortion and overdrive? Unless it's a lick or phrase that requires distortion and overdrive in order to make it sound a certain way, it only gets in the way of hearing every pick, pull, hammer, etc. These guys need to quit trying to hide. Let it all hang out, fellas.
Ignore14 Reverb, delay.... it's part of most guitarists sound. If someone is showing you THEIR style and sound, then they are not going to turn off the distortion and delay because that isn't what they use on the records. What if you bought a Van Halen instruction vid and it was Eddie and he had a totally clean tone and was playing all his distorted songs that way. ? It would sound like total shit. Obviously this guy has never watched other Shawn Lane vids where he is showing you some lick from one of his tunes. He's got a little too much delay in this vid but to say every guitarist should just turn off the distortion and effects is rather ill-informed. If you are watching a Shawn Lane vid it's rather expected that you are not a newb. And Shawn SHOWS you where he's putting his fingers and you can see his pick hand. You don't even need sound for that.
1:07- "That's kind of a MEDIUM speed" Haha!

No one will ever be able to play a guitar the same way Shawn could, his ability is untouchable even years after his passing
@nutyeet4016 I will give me 5 years more
He was one of the greats!
I've never heard anybody pick as fast as Shawn. The speed at which he plays is almost inhuman! Even the best of today's shredders can't come close!
Michael angelo nearly I guess lol
Nope
Rusty Cooley and Marshall Harrison I guess
Marshall h.
Not only was he the master of guitar, he mastered piano, bass and drums. His genius applied to everything in life. He was extremely knowledgeable.
so fast and yet so clean!
Astonished every time I hear or watch him
7:37 My........GOD !!!! That picking !!!!!
+quazzie1 god he was so sick
+quazzie1 He could have killed us all right there!
He ripped a hole in the space time continuum!
+quazzie1 is it actually just me or did Shawn Lane's hand never rest while picking? it looks like it was "floating" or whatever you call that
All of his stuff is pretty unbelievable I agree, but I kind of miss the earthy quality. The grab in the nuts.
not human
the 6:32 "ok" sounded like he had shown even himself something impossible :D :D
My man starts on the upstroke. Of all the cats i've wanted to validate the upstroke start, i'm very happy it is Shawn.
Yes
nobody has ever or ever will have shawn's combination of speed, phrasing, and melody.
Shawns speed especially on this lesson is untouchable even marshal Harrison said Shawn was insanely fast. No one is this fast or this clean 😳
Paul Gilbert is the only cat alive that could play with Shawn... the 🤘
@@jomama9445 niciodată nu va putea Paul Gilbert sa țină pasul ăsta...nimeni în viața dintre cei mai rapizi nu ar putea...Nic Tony MacAlphine...nimeni
lol! why am I still even watching this? there's no hope for me here. hahah
It's settled..I will always begin picking on the upstroke!
1:06 "Thats kind of a medium speed"
....wut?!
The one part on that one note, wicked!
Where can I get the 10 million pages of tabs for this video?
I think it's really interesting that he always starts shredding with an upstroke; I've found it definitely helps with fast passages if you can get used to it!
Trying that. It's hard to unlearn certain things.
Love you my master great Shawn.
I've practiced 3 decades to get to his medium speed. And even then...yeah.
Does anybody know if Shawn ever used economy picking for string changes? It looks like he does when he shows the slow version. Fast? I can't tell. :)
"Another thing you can do is..." Shawn, still can't do the first thing.
He might as well say: another thing you can't do lol
Thank god! There is hope for me. My angle of attacked opposite like his. I thought I would have to unlearn twenty years of picking the opposite way of 99% of the players. Now I know there’s hope
frikkin GREATness
R.I.P...
3:28
First time I've seen him being unable to play something. And he's cool about it :)
haha too
I wonder what kind of pick he use?
I want to know how old he was by this recording
oh well, back to smoke on the water
Great stuff
;~)
The chromatic example is just... wow

False... speed, like anything can be learnt.
Holy cow man!
This Lessons are NOT for Economy pickers!
So i give up. Explains why GG admired Shawn.
Just look at those fingers: minimum movement = maximum effect ( and then the rest)
Easlebum actually his fingers doesnt seem too econmic, they move alot but extremily fluent, like a piano player
tabs plz
In my religion Shawn is God and Buckethead is Jesus. Thanks for the video!!!
bpcborja and Paul Gilbert is the Holy Spirit
@@DarkShines86 🤣🤣🤣👍🎸🎸🎸
This guy is from another planet.. Wow what a technical virtuoso. His tone though.. ugh lol
Mantaaaavvv Man💣🎶
Shawn was so fast.
I think I forgot how to count. Where did my fingers go? Oh, there they are... hiding in the corner, shaking.
He surely meant half of his max speed lol !
I love it when he says "YOU can play it like this..............
Holy shit! !!!!!!!!!!!
How can your mind keep up with that speed? It's one thing to practice a song and be able to do fast parts without conscious thought. But he just whips out these fast licks on the spot.
He's been practicing a lot.
Freebird!!!!!!

7:38 ....
1:50 HUH?
Yngwie is that what you said her name was... LOL
No idea what just happened - is it a robot?
fuck that delay tho
He plays WITHOUT FUCKING LOOKING AT THE GUITAR
i just wondering can yngwie beat him? lol
How can you not tell?
Steve Monroe ofc no.
Steve Monroe There is a story out there (I don't know how true it is) that Shawn Lane opened for Yngwie once and after his set, Yngwie refused to come out and perform.
Omniverse Music That is true, was one of the first rising force concerts.
Pedro Omar Soto Where is your evidence that Shawn opened for Rising Force? I would say those musical styles wouldn't be a good match for any concert promoter to have done. Where is the news article that mentioned Yngwie refusing to do a concert and all the fans getting pissed?

Michael angelo isn't as fast
Too much delay. Must be addiction to effects.
Bucket... you dirty dog!

troll
***** Hide?! Clearly, Shawn doesn't need to hide. It's just the sound he prefers. Nothing wrong with that.
"Hide".... pffft!
+TruthSurge How is that a troll he is absolutely correct.

3:30 interesting he always starts on upstrokes. God this is so not musical though. Guys don’t play like this please!
I'm faster.
