When I first started...I got so frustrated with nothing turning out as I wanted. Thing is, I had too many ideas and wanted them all on one page. I really doubted my own creative skills. But I got better at it and when I saw what materials others bought and used? I discovered that the fancier and expensive the collection of crayons, sprays, stencils and paints people had, the less creative you have to be...some just do an assemblage of things they just ordered on line. That made me rather proud as I only had some gesso, old journals, 12 caran d'ache neocolor II, and old set of acryllic paints, a dried out glue stick and I used my make up brushes. I bought some black markers and kept every piece of paper I found interesting and started with that. I love the experimenting with a few bits and bobs and alternative materials I have already...like masking tape that has frayed on one side and essential oils that I found at the back of a shelf in our garage. Stealing paper napkins from fast food resto's and fake allergies on BBQ just to get some extra...I feel like a Magpie feasting on cluttered things, haha. Even my bag has got secret compartments to hide my little treasure trinkets. But it's so much fun and rewarding when you know you've got the perfect piece to make your page really stand out. So glad I didn't get rid of my first efforts too as they come in handy for a new idea or I finally finish them and they are transformed into something well worth it. There, it was a pleasure looking at your work and thanks I got to share this with other fans. 🖖

Ah Pascale, I can relate to so much of what you say! I definitely agree that in a way the less you have, the more creative you become, in fact sometimes I am paralyzed by choice if I have too many things to play with - it helps to just take a limited choice of supplies and go from there. Having said that, when I buy new art supplies, I do get the best I can afford as the cheaper ones can sometimes be a false economy when they don't work so well - I'd rather have a realy limited range of colours in a good quality paint for example, than a huge collection of colours in a less good paint. if that makes sense? I also have free supplies like napkins and junk mail and things I pick up or friends keep for me - hoarded in boxes and drawers in my craft room, waiting for their moment to shine! Anyway, thanks very much for your encouraging words, I really appreciate it :)

@@artyfartyannie I have a twist on Teesha Moore's idea. I ran my face through one of those photo booth apps that distort your face and a girlfriend said, "Why don't you use that as one of your Dolly's faces?" So I did and then I found a couple of art journaled dolls on Pinterest that their dresses were made from a paint can and soup can labels and I went from there. I also try to match Dolly's dresses and the saying. If you don't want to watch a bunch of videos with my dolls in them, my Flickr account has an album of them. You can get to them through my about tab if you want to look.

Hey thank you for your kind words and for subscribing, I've just retired so planning to do much more on here very soon (I now have a "This is not a Book" to start on, so might film how I do the pages, what do you think, would you watch that? To answer your question, I have coated some of the pages with matte medium, Mod Podge or similar - makes them more durable and I like the look and feel, however word of warning, they need to be thoroughly dried or they will stick together and ruin the page. I also sometimes use a coat of clear or white gesso as a base, because the book paper isn't great to work on with some mediums. Clear gesso might in fact be a better solution as a top coat, but haven't tried that yet. Hope that helps and hope you will enjoy doing your own journal :)
