He wasn't a slave, he was wearing fancy clothes and sitting comfortably while having a conversation with other people. None of them slaves but merchants, politicians, etc. Othello, who's represented in the painting, although fictional was written as a general in the Venetian army. The first Duke of Florence, Alessandro de Medici, was black etc etc. Much earlier than this, Saint Nicholas (yes that guy), which you can verify by visiting the Basilica in Bari (Pulia, Italy) where his remains are kept and where portraits of him are everywhere, was also black. Black history is a lot richer than people will have you think, and the relations between Africa and Europe were not always conflictual and about slavery. For the longest time European countries had the greatest respect for African ones and the two kept strong economical and cultural ties with each other. Until things took a dark turn as you know. Check out the book "Black Africans in Renaissance Europe" for example, it's a nice collection of writings on the subject.
