Sorry, the whole movie made me angry and I needed to channel it out somewhere.
This movie is literally just the parent trap. Here are some examples: 1) In the parent trap, there are 2 twins who switch places. One has a british accent, one doesn't. 2) Conveniently, both twins can alter their voices to sound like the opposite twin 3) JUST like in the parent trap, there is a scene where the characters have to do a handshape AND SOOOOO MUCH MORE.
And like he sort of highlights in the review, I think the two romances didn't work out well since 1. neither story gets enough time to really be fleshed out to the point the movie says they're at, and 2. one of the couples (*ahem* male love interests) is clearly MUCH better than the other and makes it look bad by comparison
I call it the 'Grace Kelly effect' (uncoined term). There are a handful of movies that have this plot. A 'regular american girl' travels to some small unknown european country and falls in love with the prince. It's like americans think there are all these tiny rich countries with super approachable monarchies in Europe that so happen to have a gorgeous prince looking to fall in love with some random american. As a European, I'm offended. (not really, it's just weird)
This movie was decent enough. It ticked all the boxes of Christmas movie cliches (romance,Yuletide setting, fictitious royals, precocious young child nudging the plot along, wacky hijinks, etc). Not to mentition that in one scene, they stop the movie dead to watch Netflix, inside of ANOTHER Netflix film?! Still, I watched it mostly for Vanessa Hudgens, as I like seeing her in Post "High School Musical" roles.

He wasn’t attracted to his best friend. He straight up told his daughter it would never happen between them because she’s too uptight. The princess was more spontaneous and he started being attracted to her when he noticed she’d changed
I think they try to explain it away by having Kevin say that Stacey is too organised and would stress him out. The Duchess is more spontaneous and carefree, and that's why he went for her. But it basically feels like he wanted Stacey, just a more carefree version of her.
Shit, Lindsay Lohan was smart enough to teach the other Lindsay Lohan the secret butler handshake in The Parent Trap remake. I'll also never understand the "play the instrument badly" trope. You can just refuse to play!
Plus in the parents trap, both of the twins sort had a good reason (by movie standards anyway) to switch lives, because it was supposed to bring their parents yogether or they wanted to experience the other parent or something like that. Here the dutchess is like, "Oh I just want to know what it's like to be normal." and the other girl doesn't even question this stupid idea and is like, "Lol ok."

I actually ended up liking the prince more than I thought I would! Even though he seems as dry as toast at times, I like that he was open-minded to Stacy's ideas, like delivering presents to the orphanage. Also, it was nice when he noticed that she was nervous to play the piano in front of everyone so he played the song with her. I thought that was sweet :)

With all the times people have done "The Prince and the Pauper" plot, am I the only one who thinks it'd be interesting if a film followed Mark Twain's actual story and had the switch happen by accident? In the book, Prince Edward and Tom didn't intend to switch lives for a week. They thought it'd be funny to switch clothes for a few minutes, and the prince left to yell at the guard who hurt Tom. The guard thought the prince was the pauper and threw him out of the castle. Then *both* the Royal family and Tom's family thought their respective "sons" had gone insane when they claimed to be someone else. Yeah, on the one hand, the way modern movies do it gives the characters a tiny bit of agency over the plot, but when done poorly it makes the adult protagonists look stupid for entrusting a complete stranger to handle their lives.
I'm so happy to find another person in the comments who even knows that Mark Twain wrote the original story! And I agree I would love to see a true-to-story movie.
Tbh it probably also doesn't help that the prince and pauper of the original story were children, or at least adolescents, so making the switch for funzies without thinking of the political consequences makes sense. In movies like this one though, the fact that two _adults_ would do something so irresponsible (and potentially threatening to national security!) just for the sake of their own entertainment really does a number on their credibility. ...Now that I think about it, the Barbie adaptation is the only one I can think of that doesn't have the princess and the pauper switch identities voluntarily-- at least not quite. In that one, the princess is kidnapped and so the pauper is asked to impersonate her temporarily in order to avoid kingdom-wide panic until she can be found. Meanwhile, the princess escapes her captivity but is mistaken for the pauper and put to work in the textile factory.

And like he sort of highlights in the review, I think the two romances didn't work out well since 1. neither story gets enough time to really be fleshed out to the point the movie says they're at, and 2. one of the couples (*ahem* male love interests) is clearly MUCH better than the other and makes it look bad by comparison

I call it the 'Grace Kelly effect' (uncoined term). There are a handful of movies that have this plot. A 'regular american girl' travels to some small unknown european country and falls in love with the prince. It's like americans think there are all these tiny rich countries with super approachable monarchies in Europe that so happen to have a gorgeous prince looking to fall in love with some random american.
As a European, I'm offended. (not really, it's just weird)

This movie was decent enough. It ticked all the boxes of Christmas movie cliches (romance,Yuletide setting, fictitious royals, precocious young child nudging the plot along, wacky hijinks, etc). Not to mentition that in one scene, they stop the movie dead to watch Netflix, inside of ANOTHER Netflix film?! Still, I watched it mostly for Vanessa Hudgens, as I like seeing her in Post "High School Musical" roles.
There was another movie that did that in Netflix recently, it was also a christmas movie. Kinda dumb imo

This is so correct. I thought It was just me.... Movie like monte carlo make sense because the guy did not know any of the doppelganger before hand so it makes sense that he can fall in love with one of them but this does not apply to this movie. NOT at all....
He wasn’t attracted to his best friend. He straight up told his daughter it would never happen between them because she’s too uptight. The princess was more spontaneous and he started being attracted to her when he noticed she’d changed
I think they try to explain it away by having Kevin say that Stacey is too organised and would stress him out. The Duchess is more spontaneous and carefree, and that's why he went for her. But it basically feels like he wanted Stacey, just a more carefree version of her.
The only thing that made this movie bearable was Vanessa Hudgens, because she’s a queen

Plus in the parents trap, both of the twins sort had a good reason (by movie standards anyway) to switch lives, because it was supposed to bring their parents yogether or they wanted to experience the other parent or something like that. Here the dutchess is like, "Oh I just want to know what it's like to be normal." and the other girl doesn't even question this stupid idea and is like, "Lol ok."

I actually ended up liking the prince more than I thought I would! Even though he seems as dry as toast at times, I like that he was open-minded to Stacy's ideas, like delivering presents to the orphanage. Also, it was nice when he noticed that she was nervous to play the piano in front of everyone so he played the song with her. I thought that was sweet :)
Another plot hole; didn't the prince and Lady Margaret have to marry for some "joining two countries together" type situation? How could the prince just declare he will marry Stacey instead when they had basically an arranged marriage 🤔🤔
Stacy was also part of Lady Margaret's family.
I haven't seen the movie but just by watching this video, I thought to myself that what happened would definitely not have been as easy as it was in this movie

The BEST version of this story is Barbies The Princess and the Pauper. The Prince has personality, only one falls in love over a short amount of time, it passes the Bechdel test with flying colours. AND campy and awesome songs!

With all the times people have done "The Prince and the Pauper" plot, am I the only one who thinks it'd be interesting if a film followed Mark Twain's actual story and had the switch happen by accident? In the book, Prince Edward and Tom didn't intend to switch lives for a week. They thought it'd be funny to switch clothes for a few minutes, and the prince left to yell at the guard who hurt Tom. The guard thought the prince was the pauper and threw him out of the castle. Then *both* the Royal family and Tom's family thought their respective "sons" had gone insane when they claimed to be someone else.
Yeah, on the one hand, the way modern movies do it gives the characters a tiny bit of agency over the plot, but when done poorly it makes the adult protagonists look stupid for entrusting a complete stranger to handle their lives.
I'm so happy to find another person in the comments who even knows that Mark Twain wrote the original story! And I agree I would love to see a true-to-story movie.
Tbh it probably also doesn't help that the prince and pauper of the original story were children, or at least adolescents, so making the switch for funzies without thinking of the political consequences makes sense. In movies like this one though, the fact that two _adults_ would do something so irresponsible (and potentially threatening to national security!) just for the sake of their own entertainment really does a number on their credibility.
...Now that I think about it, the Barbie adaptation is the only one I can think of that doesn't have the princess and the pauper switch identities voluntarily-- at least not quite. In that one, the princess is kidnapped and so the pauper is asked to impersonate her temporarily in order to avoid kingdom-wide panic until she can be found. Meanwhile, the princess escapes her captivity but is mistaken for the pauper and put to work in the textile factory.
In Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper it's actually an accidental switch.
