Man I just found your channel this evening and binge watched everything. This is absolutely awesome and invaluable knowledge to a guy that is just getting into hot rodding engines. Thank you for all of this!! I'm going to try my hand at an aluminum headed 355 hopefully sometime this summer if I can swing all of the parts. Watching your videos has given me some valuable insight and you definitely earned a new subscriber who is very much looking forward to watching this channel grow!
@@nylegreen261 Yeah thats a keeper for sure. My first car was a metalflake red 1968 ford fairlane fastback it was a bad ass car but it wasnt till I hit 21 that I got a 69 camaro and a 66 chevelle and never looked back…. been a chevy man ever since
I also had a L31 vortec in my 74 c10. With a tiny 218 cam at full weight and stock suspension it went 13.0 on motor and 11.9 on a 150 shot of nitrous. I have since then redid the short block with forged pistons, a 228/232 custom grind cam from bullet, and swapped the vortec heads for profiler aluminum heads. I've only made one pass on the new setup and went 11.3 on a 200 shot
Nice, you have a good running motor. Does the c10 have a 2 piece driveshaft? I have a 1977 c20 it has the 2 piece driveshaft. Im curious on what kind of power it would handle.
Very cool to do so many comparisons. I don't see anyone else on YT doing this. You probably already know but a wide LSA 114 compared to say a narrower LSA 106-108 will run smoother and pull more at the top but the sacrifice isn't worth it the same lift and duration but with say a 107 LSA would be very noticeable.
Man I love the Vortec cylinder heads too man. Hard to beat these heads as to the older stuff. Seems to me you could take the bowl clean up heads off the one with the 5/64 ring engine and put them over on that engine in the car. Put the same came over in it the comp 501 cam. Put the thin head gaskets with it as well. Less work and expense. Just put the L31 062 heads right on it. Only other option would be to get a set of maybe budget claimer 1 eyebrow pistons in it ,and then if you wanna go super fast spray it! Like a 200 shot or something. You'd need the split lift cam to do that really. Which you have all that stuff. Then mess with jetting. I'd put 89 size in the front and 94 in back. Also a dual plane Air Gap intake will make a little more power too. This thing makes power like a big block so you have to figure likewise😮😅
I have the same Vortec LT31 engine that you have with a Melling 22280 cam in it. I may run the thin head gasket for more compression. Identical cam except for a 110 LSA. Edlebrock RPM intake It with a 650 or 750 Holley . This will be going in a 66 Chevelle with a M20 4 Speed and a 3.73 Posi rear. Do you think that I could run a 12.99 or better 1/4 mile with this combo? I really like your videos. Thanks
Nice thank you. I believe that your goals are well in reach. Do plan on drag radials or slicks. I also think the cam you have would be faster than mine in a L31.
On your vortec heads do you have screw in studs and guide plates, i have ran much smaller cams and pulled the factory rocker arm studs out because of too aggressive cam profiles?
No I haven't. As soon as I get a sign that they are moving I will pull and change to screw in studs. I have heard the 062 and 906 castings are harder to pull then older castings. I have had older castings heads studs move though.
My old killa vortec had a big 'ol sloppy rolla' cam in it. .858/.809 284/293 @.050 on a 110 lsa. 15.7 to 1 compression 440 cubes. Was done revving by 5200. Some say the cam was mismatched, but I say bullspit. What do you think?
Nice set up. Im thinking your light years beyond were im at. I couldn't figure out how to run a cam that large in a vortec head let alone a shortblock. Would love to test it.
Any help guess on how much power a 350 stock with 993 heads with rockers intake carb headers 280 Clayton smith - is pushing ? I just bought the car and we’ll I am curious 🧐
That is a great question. You might no more about this then I do. I could probably do a thousand test and still not be able to answer this. The things I'm seeing right now is how much ramp rates influence performance and characteristics.

I love these budget build videos ❤❤❤ Please keep these coming when do any little change and gets any power difference 💪💪💪
Sounds good thank you
@nylegreen261 You're Very Welcome!
Enjoy the content, you just proven what i was telling someone else about vortec headed engines!
Thank you
Great video. You answered a bunch of questions that I had about my car!
Nice glad to help.
Good looking car man always liked those chevy II novas. Grew up in the 70’s with a few buddys that were running them
Thank you. Had it for 20 years now. I bought it as soon as I had my first good job.

@Nyle Green It has a one piece driveshaft
Love to see the testing. That thing pulled pretty good into the higher revs for only having a 220* Cam.
Yes I thought so to. I thought it was faster then it was by how it revved out.

Thank you.Yes I think this cam on a narrower lobe separation would be quicker.
That 114 lsa is no joke...fat torque curve!!!!!
Thanks so much !

On the online Wallace racing calculator your 8.20 1/8 would equal a 12.85 1/4 mile time.
Nice that was what it ran when the motor was stock. With the cam and intake upgrade. It ran a 7.87 1/8th.
I think those k motion springs 700 are about 465 lbs open I think for that cam you need about 300 open

That is tuff for me to say. Corrected horsepower maybe 280 to 300 horsepower.
What is a Vortec blueprint? Is this something we can buy?
What's better, a cam with split duration or a cam with even duration? I always wonder about that.
That is a great question. You might no more about this then I do. I could probably do a thousand test and still not be able to answer this. The things I'm seeing right now is how much ramp rates influence performance and characteristics.
@@nylegreen261 Even duration cams would be best with solid lifters as you could adjust the lash and use different rockers ratios for fine tuning.
I like it. When I change to better cylinder heads. I plan on playing with lash and rocker ratios.
I have a similar setup in my 67 nova..Blueprint Motor 398hp..427 ft lbs torque..turbo 350..2600 stall and 4:11 gears..do you think it'll run 12s?
Yes it shouldn't be a problem. Let me know how it runs.
She really throws down man.
Thank you. Its a blast.
7.87 1/8 = 12.35 1/4
Not to bad. My 350 crate 330hp ran a 7.91 in the car. So a slight improvement. Thank you.
💞 P r o m o s m
A vortec headed 350 has the potential to go way faster than this. Pre vortec stuff easily went faster.
No doubt!! I'm just a tight budget hobbiest having fun.
@@nylegreen261 same here amen to that 👍
