I used to go to the wrecking yard years ago and get the torque converters out of Chevy Vega’s, they worked pretty good, 4000 stall but after you stomped on them for a little while their stall would increase always kept like two or three of them on hand, get them for 20.00 bucks in the bone yard.
I never minded driving my 86 Olds 442 too much - 68 Olds 350 with a THM 350- 3000 stall/ 3.73 gear on the side streets, even the highway at 65 (3300 rpms) but after watching this video, my ride seems streetable and tame compared to this monster. It actually doesnt seem too bad for that high of stall and 4.56s with 29 inch tires. Hell, you could drive it to the track if it wasnt too far! Sounds mean. I dig it. Great roads for test drives. At 3500-3700 rpms, it sounds like it's not even working it that hard. Like it could cruise for a couple hours at that speed.

Hello curious if you feel i'm running the correct size convertor, the engine makes 400 ft lbs@3500 and 513@4500, what would you consider to be the best suited for primarily street driving?
It sounds good. I’ve always liked the sound of a high stall on the street. My combination is drastically different but with similar quarter mile times. 347 NA small block Ford in a Fox coupe, TKX trans, 3.73s with 9 inch wide, 26 inch tall slicks. I’ve run a best of 11.33 at 120, but the big drawback is the aluminum flywheel. It either bogs, or spins too much out of the hole. I only have 15 passes on this combination (the weather in the UK sucks so we can’t run as much as we’d like). The new combination in a 406 Clevor that should be done by next summer. It should be fun. Nice car
@johnhickman106 Nice, that is awesome. I have a foxbody. Can you run a 28-inch tire on the back. I'm thinking once I get down in the low 11's I will need one. What are your 60 fts and trap rpm's. I also have 3.73 gears. Thank you
@ My 60’ sucks still, best of 1.63. Trapping at around 6200-6300 if I remember correctly. I’ll have to check the data logs. You can use a 28 on Foxes and shouldn’t have any issues doing so, unless your rear squats a lot. You can see what all we’ve done to ours on the channel Fox’s Abroad. It’s two Americans and one Brit over here in the UK trying to do what we can overseas with these cars. All three of us have coupes with small blocks. One is a turbo 363, one is a supercharged 402 and mine. We are building a 406 this winter for mine and it will be supercharged after we iron out the bugs.
Big stall and compression makes it sound way way way lean unless you are just wide open throttle, anywhere between 3200-5400 just driving along it sounds like its super unhappy but when you stomp it and hold WOT it sounds right. Idle and wide open throttle sound good but everything inbetween will have you stressin out always thinking somethings wrong and second guessing your jets and just a headache
@NRJracing Good ear. I have my race carburetor on it. I have it tuned for wide open throttle. I have a afr gauge on the car. I do not run power valves in this carburetor.
Just what I need to see my bu is going back on the street with basically same engine and trans combo with 4.88 gears. Was wondering if converter ,gear and cam change was in my future,Not now looks just fine for 7 mile cruise to town for shows and cruise ins.
I have a pinto with a 351c. , C4 trans , 4.11 axle . 8" coan converter , stalls 5500. Been street driving it for years. Just gotta run deep aluminum oil pan, big cooler and fan
Love the videos Nyle. I was wondering, which engine are you running in this video, and what exhaust? Im not sure if its compression or the muffler, but it sounds killer.
I have a HQ Kingswood with a 383 sbc, TH350 and a 5000 8" dominator stall. I think its more the cam that makes it nice to drive or not. Mine is 257/267@50 .600 .600 110lsa Hyd roller and it's pretty rough before about 2200 or so. Your cam sounds bigger than mine probably the smaller cubes but I think if you had a smaller stall it would be much rougher to cruise around.
I was always under the assumption that running a converter on the street with that high of a stall would cause transmission overheating I guess I was wrong but then again I live in phx az so idk
mine ran hot at least for sure on engine side, 68 Camaro with 402, th350 4000 stall, 4:10 gear, it did not like 95 plus days in central mo, had a b & m supercooler
@jdm4569 Nice, I have been running high stalls for a few years now. With a good converter, large cooler, and deep trans pan it should be fine. Living in Arizona, I would be safe and put a gauge on it.
@tappyVQ A higher stall allows most engines to operate closer to its peak power. The closer you can keep it to peak power, the quicker the vehicle will accelerate. To allow a transmission to stay stationary at a 5k stall, you will need a transmission brake. I do not know much about cars with launch control.
@____MC____ I can heat it up with back to back transbrake passes. Hot lapping on a warm day. I try to stay away from that. When the track Is closing soon I have done it.
@____MC____ Yes, it depends on how efficient your torque converter is. Mine is A1 converter that is efficient while driving. If the converter is inefficient, I can see it heating the transmission up. Pick a good brand torque converter, and ask questions. I do cruise nights, car shows, and late night spirited driving without problems. I have found my converter used on marketplace. I had A1 go through it.
My 2011 Camaro SS with a 6L80e auto transmission with a Circle D 4200rpm lockup stall converter is soft below 2300rpm but will keep up with traffic 2500-3000rpm you have to try pretty hard from a dead stop to keep the rpms below 3000rpm throttle response is wicked it has stock 3.27 gears it has a big engine oil cooler and big transmission fluid cooler in stop and go heavy traffic transmission stays 180-187 degrees on a 94 degree Florida day with the converter in lockup 80mph is 2100-2200rpm of course this is not a daily driver if you floor it from a dead stop 5 feet out your at 4500rpm like right now going over a 2800rpm stall converter for daily driving won't be good in heavy city traffic and it will kill your gas mileage but it will surely be better than a stock converter would acceleration will be much snappier with a stall night and day difference
A 2800 rpm stall converter will start pulling good at part throttle 2000-2100rpm street driving a mild 2800 stall will cut .5 - .7 off your 0 - 60 times with good traction
@nylegreen261 car runs good love 62-67 Novas solid old school setup that can out run most newer expensive muscle cars like the raw feeling you get from these older hotrods the 5000rpm stall puts it right in that sweet spot
I too would like to know the brand, I assume you need a good brand like ati to have the converter be as tight as he claims, I also assume the cheaper ones, just add clearance and/or miss match off the shelf parts to slight degree to get the higher stall speeds. I'm about to put a used 4500 rpm ati in a heavy car and I'm really nervous about that....
@@nylegreen261 thanks I have a 1973 Z- 28 I bought new, replace the engine to a gm 69 , 370 hp LT -1 350, in 1975, 488 gears B and M turbo with 3,000 to 3200 converter also B+ M. Run 11.70 s 126 mph in 1976. The mph was hi because of , alittel shot of nos. Pretty fast street car back then, not so much anymore. 😢 Still driving it .
Am I understanding correctly that you’re cruising at 60 @3500 rpm? Is that not rough on the trans? I know my Buicks power glide is fairly smooth with a 2800 high stall. Like 2500rpms @ 60
@davidkilpatrick5654 I haven't had tranmission issues. I have been running steep gears for years now. I do local car show and cruise nights. I have done a 6 hr round trip on the highway at 3500 rpm's. I wouldn't want to do that again.
With a 5000 rpm converter, my car still cruises at 60mph@2500 rpm, as I'm running 3.10s in the axle. The car is so light, that the converter doesn't really slip all that much unless I get into the throttle. The engine is still stumbling at 2500 though, so fuel mileage is pretty bad unless I'm cruising at 75+, then it begins to smooth out and I get 13mpg.
You have to adjust your build according to where you drive and what you can tolerate. I can tolerate radical machines for daily driving. Drove a 66 nova for 20 years that was not quite as radical as this one, but what many guys would say was too much for a daily driver. I loved it. Only on 100+ degree days, was overheating a concern, and only in stop and go traffic.
So any guess how much effect on trans temp would it have with a 3800-4000 lb car and a 3.73 gear? I'd like to put a 3800-4000 converter in my 66 C10 short bed, but I was afraid the extra weight and the taller gear would generate too much slippage/heat. I don't have a trans temp gauge, but i'm running a 2500 stall just to get it to idle in gear right now and haven't had any indications things are getting too hot. Motor is a 10.2:1 358 with a 227/233, .489/.503 cam on a 109 LSA.
@williampierce5615 No, I need to better with it. I will have the transmission looked at every few years. I have had it for over 20 years. The clutches are the same. I have broken the case and replaced a band. Also a hub.
It takes a GOOD converter to be able to flash up over 5000roms on the brake, BUT still be plenty tight enough at part throttle to cruise around more like a stock(ish) converter. The mail order, off the shelf, 10" units are usually garbage, and feel like a wet rag at anything under it's full stall speed. DON'T waste your money on those. Kust pony uo the bucks ONCE, and special order a quality unit MADE for your specific application, and you WILL be able to drive it all day long.
@@lancelanphier9509 high stall converters slip a lot especially stop and go traffic, climbing hills, and eventually causes high temperatures. They are great for launches though and big burnouts.
Stall speed doesnt stall till that rpm.. You can still cruise around at 2000 rpms with a 5000rpm stall. Its all fluid dynamics in the converter, its the most vital part of a car that most people skimp out on.
I think your 450hp is a bit conservatively modest for an 11.90 car tho i dont know the mph ,sounds killer reminds me of back 20 yrs ago when i drove a drag car like a street car and the engine overruled the stereo at full volume goin 55-60....fun times dont miss the 8mpg carbed engine of my yesterdays but after moving to mpfi its faster but more driveable and near 20mpg.
@@bluesky-ud9wg Except for horsepower. On an engine that flows a decent amount of air the air filter and possibly the air cleaner assembly will be a restriction. Where he is driving around there just are not that many foreign materials to be pulled into the engine. Ever notice how on fuel injected cars where there is no longer a breather tube attached at the air cleaner that the air filters seem to last forever? The crankcase blowby was what was causing air filters to become so dirty.
I wouldnt necessarily call this on the street, this is back riads. When "on the street" is mentioned, i think its a pretty safe bet we assume other traffic and traffic lights are involved.

5200 stall on the street? No thank you. Even with enough transmission cooling on board to survive the Converter will make the car drive like it's always on snow in any scenario that isn't WOT to high RPM. Full throttle will be drag race ready for sure but part throttle spongy in all other street driving situations is a way too tough to live with set up, IMO. Could this car be driven to troll for illegal street racing on any given Friday night? Sure! Is it a good trade off for much of any other use? Nope. There is always different ways to get to the same 1/4 mile time. A pure trailer to the track drag racer can easily use a 5,200RPM converter and the smaller displacement, very racy, SBC set up you have in the car right now. A true street/strip that works well with a far more reasonable and far easier to live with stall speed, IMO, can achieve the same times. Lower RPM Stall and a bigger inch SBC could be set up to make big power earlier in the RPM range to achieve similar times. A 3,000-3500RPM stall speed is about as aggressive on the street as I'd ever target for a car that will see street driving along with trips to drag strip for a serious WOT run for the numbers!!
@mrporsche4236 What in the world could cause 3K not to be street able?? I guess you don't realize that most motorhomes and dually trucks have 4:10 & 4:56 gears, if they had tachs in them the owners would crap their pants. A lot of 4 cylinder cars run at close to 3K also. When an engine redlines at 7500 3K really aint that high.
From what I understand the bigger cam causes some load up before you get into higher rpm’s. Have a pretty sought 410 cleveland stroker in my 72 ranchero and does the same thing in traffic sometimes.
@rottweiler9535 It is rowdy. I have the carburetor tuned for wide open throttle with no power valves. I have done it like this for years now. It is easier for me to track jetting. I do have other carburetors with power valves. This 4150 beats out the others at the track. It's fine for local events. I haven't had issues with plugs fouling.
With a big enough trans cooler, a large enough fuel tank and good valve springs anything is possible lol. I’ve had valve spring failures before from constant “no load” fixed rpm and constant higher rpm prolonged exposure. I’ve also ruined my current converter from destroying the fins. Entirely too much weight and hp, now I have converter shudder. Turns out the fins of the pump look like they ate gravel, but no metal in the pan. Hey noob question here, why would you want a higher stall converter? Would you stall it to say 5k rpm while stationary and have “launch control”?
@tappyVQ A higher stall allows most engines to operate closer to its peak power. The closer you can keep it to peak power, the quicker the vehicle will accelerate. To allow a transmission to stay stationary at a 5k stall, you will need a transmission brake. I do not know much about cars with launch control.
Nyle is the engine got the 280H Comp Cam in it? cheers Brett

@kermets No, this engine is my 12.5 compression 357. Thank you

At what point or what truely causes a torque converter to get too hot?
@____MC____ I can heat it up with back to back transbrake passes. Hot lapping on a warm day. I try to stay away from that. When the track Is closing soon I have done it.
@nylegreen261 what if you're a couple hundred rpm off your target stall? I wonder whats really safe for street use.
Who said they're not streetable?

Over 3000 rpm not streetable
Sure it is...just depends on your particular driving conditions and tolerance level.
@mrporsche4236 What in the world could cause 3K not to be street able??
