This is my KNIFE!!! Your first review provoked me to buy this knife. I have to say THANK YOU NUTNFANCY!! It has been my favorite knife I have ever owned.
Had this knife for about a year now and it is amazing. Use it as an edc and used it to gut a deer and put it through some hard use. Sliced through the chest bone of the deer with ease and only had to oil the action and work it back in (got a bit stiff) and still works great. Love this knife!
I've had a 950 for about a year and half now and I do love the knife. But as Nutn has said many times in the past, "The heavier knives I start to leave at home." And the same has happened for me with this one. It's become more a safe queen than anything. And it does quite well in that role, it is indeed beautiful.
GREAT REVIEW! I bought My 950 Rift last summer after I watched your review and I have to say i was amazed. Benchmade made a beautiful, strong, and unique looking knife. Thanks for giving it a second chance!
I bought this knife and it is worth every penny! Simply put : love it. All the negative (less positive :) ) points mentioned are true, but even so...the cool factor outweighs it. Thanks for the maaaaany reviews Nutn, keep it up!
That's my holy grail. Getting that exact on for the collection and the black bk1 combo for work. Hopefully by Christmas, as a graduation present to myself from paramedic school. Woo woo!!
i was wondering whether to buy this and i figured nutnfancy would have a review of it, or at least i was hoping. now i can watch 18 minutes of awesomeness and i know ill make the right choice!
I have been thrashing this knife for about a year now and its held up admirably. still rock solid lockup. I've bent the clip on it twice, but their service is awesome and they replace it and tune it up to spec for cost of shipping. This knife is definitely worth the cost. I've seen what osborne can do now, so I'm thinking about getting a 940 for carry when I'm not working.
Hey Nutnfancy, got this one in the mail today, april 2013 and they still aren't putting a radius on the handle scales. Luckily because of this vid i had my sandpaper and grip tape waiting at home for the 950 to arrive in the mail. Thanks for the super helpful reviews!
I got one. Yup. All black. It does break in fairly quick and is one of the more fast blades I own. Takes traction tape well too. Right across the scales (space and all) for the thumb. I'd say it really grows on you. My GF even likes it. That says something.
Benchmade recently notified retailers they could no longer discount their prices, resulting in a 25% increase on the price. As much as I like some of my Benchmade knives, I'm done buying them !
You carried it for 6 months? That is truly in depth research, my friend. Kudos for doing your homework before throwing it out there. A while back I had the same experience with the sharp shoulders on my Leatherman Kick (won in a raffle, not my 1st choice). I thought I was the only guy who sanded the handles on stuff until then. Didn't think it was "proper". No more. If I'm going to carry something, I'm going to be comfortable doing it. IMO this is a 5 dressed up as a 9. Peace to ya.
I own this knife in the Sbk version and I love it. Good heft, strong and fast. I chipped it a few weeks back but gave it some sharpening and good as new. Got a great deal on it and it was an instant fav. I can understand the weight issue though but sometimes it comes in handy.:)
thank you so much. I have waited forever for you to do a full review on this D: I saw the prelim review but I wanted MOARRRR. Definitely getting this as my next blade... then a zt 350...
Hey nutn, I'm an ex-machinist, and I just wanted to give you a heads up that carbide drills are not meant to be run slow. They are hard, and brittle, they need speed to cut properly. And typically without lubrication because of heat shock. Lubricating carbide can be like heating up a piece of glass and tossing it in a bucket of ice water. Looked like about a .5" bit, run the RPM at around 500 and take small, tapping pecks, should eat right through that hard stainless. Do not pre-drill.
I would advise taking as few pecks as required to manage heat and clear chips. The reason to limit pecking is that in a material like stainless, the bit must pass back through a work-hardened zone every time it's pecked. In a material as thin as a liner, it shouldn't be necessary at all.
The reason you might've broken those carbide bits is because carbide is not as tough compared to steel - any misalignment or bending in the bit will tend to cause fractures in the material. I would recommend cobalt drill bits (good ones are pricey) in a drill press, with a proper center punch and center drill, or a carbide end mill in a milling machine.
Great thorough review nutn. I agree, a real sweet high quality knife. I like a blade that can rust just a little if you don't care for it. Means they pushed the steel to the hilt on holding an edge. The way it holds up to the Psyco (the movie, specifically the shower scene, lol) on the boxes trick is pretty nice.
NUTN!! I cant believe you haven't reviewed the 908 stryker II..? same basic size as rift, awesome traction, slim, lightning fast, awesome clip, weight aint bad 4.38 oz, I feel this would be a hall of fame knife in your book.. I have swore by mine since 2002. now they have the new one with the axis lock!!!
I did a comparison video a few days ago on the rift vs the zt 0550. it was a surprise to see how they did in the field testing. The ZT made water-bottle slashing look like magic. It was a decent review.
HAH! Great opening! I also have that mouse pad. The problem I have with axis locks is they don't seem to have tolerances for anything but complete, 100% lockup. Throw some crud in there and only get it 99% open and locked and I just don't trust it. As other people have said, those little springs. They could have and should done it better.
Very nice knife, love the handle scales the benchmade bone collector also has multi color g10 scales ( black and green)and is also a good looking blade.
One advantage to the RIFT you failed to mention, and maybe the reason for the shoulders of the handles being 'sharp' is that the RIFT is SLIM. I too noticed it was heavier than expected.
well when it comes to tactical knives you want weight and the rift is under the black class so regardless of what anyone may think it was made for tactical use, also the liners arent milled out for weight because it would reduce the rigidity of the handle and create more liner flex and due to the size of the knife the rigidity is needed.
@cadrician Great comment and agreed. Price is up there and there's a lot of other great options. Still lovin' the BM. Spydie Resilience seems excellent; a larger Tenacious. Haven't checked it out in person yet though. Thanks for the wishes too.
Cool review but the knife itself just doesn't tickle my "fancy" lol....thanks nutn for the informative review, as always. Looking forward to some more awesome reviews. Peace
Hey Nutn, I know this is an older review but I just found it and own the same blade. It's my 1st Benchmade and current EDC knife. I love the Axis lock, looks and deep pocket carry though I have busted the tip 3 times now. The blade also has some very small chips in the belly area. Great review and much short!
Yet again, I have sent my fourth Benchmade knife back in within a year. At Benchmade's price point they are producing some sub-par knives. Still very disappointed with their quality control. Sent in a Dejavoo 740, Presidio 5000, & two Mini Dejavoo 745 knives
I have been edc-ing and i do mean EDC-ing the rift for a long time, I think 6 or 7 years. Before purchasing this knife I worried a lot about the weight of the knife since I was switching from a griptilian EDC. You are right that the liner should be skeletonized but it stays cleaner and is easier to clean without it. I have never felt the extra 1/2 ounce or so. It disappears on pocket. My knife might be exceptional but it is solid in every way. I use it constantly for just about anything. I am a chef and I open a lot of boxes, I use it to prepare food. (yes I clean the knife before using it on food.) It is cleaned 20 times a day. Since it is wet a good portion of its life I can attest to 154cm propensity to rust but only a very little bit. steel wool and some good oil and you are brand new. If you want a knife that will become an extension of your hand, that is equally at home battoning firewood as in the kitchen or loading dock, the benchmade 950 rift may be something you need. I have a dozen or so knives, good knives, that would be suitable for edc and they rarely see the light of day. spiderco paramilitary two, sog pentagon elite, benchmade griptilian, kershaw scallion and leek, benchmade osborne 940 are all hall of famers in my book and I've carried them all, but not for long. Since owning the rift i rarely deviate. Sometimes they get loaned to a friend on a camping trip or something but my rift is always in my pocket so much so that I just don't feel right if I don't have a pocket to put it on. Off the charts first and second kind of cool. I love this knife.
question for ya, what do you do in particular when you clean your knives for food prep? I also have benchmades and do somewhat similar edc use with them.
In the professional kitchen we are required to keep sanitizer @ our stations so depending on how dirty sometimes soap and water then sanitize but unless there is grease or fat to remove I typically just sanitize. Outside of the professional kitchen I'm not endangering anyone but myself and I use whatever is easy I guess it only comes up while camping and hiking. So I always have Dr bronners magic soap if I have my cook kit and I always have alcohol prep pads if I have my first aid kit.
@Uri24 It means Every Day Carry, he has a vid on his channel about it. It is just a knife that you will always carry with you unlike a huge survival knife or a tactical knife.
@DutchOvnnn What about cobalt bits? I've had some success drilling through sheet stainless with cobalt bits. In addition, how about drilling a smaller hole and working your way up to your final diameter?
I like this blade, but for the price, there are other knives I would get over this one. The spyderco military, or like you said the mchenry williams knife definitely. Good review, keep em coming nutn :)
Overall a good review, I do have one piece of friendly criticism. I think you should not have to do any modifications (milling and sanding) given the high number of quality brands each with their own high number of models available. Especially given the price of his blade. Again, that's my own opinion. Thanks for all of you efforts in putting out these videos.
true. true. true. but, i paid $18 for mine. if you have the knife in hand, you see that it's a great value for the money. i mentioned it because there are guys out there who have to save for two months in order to buy a $25 knife, so the rift is just a fantasy.

@nutnfancy When you're drilling hardened stainless there's a trick with the drill bits... don't buy cheap carbide ones make SURE it's a submicron grade carbide (if it's under $7 a bit it's not submicron generally) and don't run it faster than about 200rpm
@nutnfancy What is your opinion on the CRKT M16-14SF? I have been looking at it for a while and I would like to know your opinion on it. For me, it would be used as an EDC and a hiking/survival knife.
@ManVsWildfan Well the collection is always changing so it would just be a snapshot in time. Also I won't give the bad guys an inventory. It might give them a reason to come out to the Nutnfancy ranch to die.
Axis lock is one of the best locks. FYI, you can find this exact knife with the charcoal G10 brand new from a very good dealer for $114.75...it's not that hard. Nutn' overpays for all his knives cause he buys them from the wrong stores. :P
Nice knife!!! Thanks for your services Nutnfancy. A salute to all the veterans and currently serving. Thank you.
This is my KNIFE!!! Your first review provoked me to buy this knife. I have to say THANK YOU NUTNFANCY!! It has been my favorite knife I have ever owned.

Man, I love the look of that handle. That is sweet.
Keep it goin with the great knife reviews. Yours are always the best!
Your enthusiasm cracks me up. You've really got this down now, huh? You're so much more polished than a couple years ago. Nice review.
thanks for serving nutn. happy Veterans day. u rock!
That's my holy grail. Getting that exact on for the collection and the black bk1 combo for work. Hopefully by Christmas, as a graduation present to myself from paramedic school. Woo woo!!
its so refreshing to have a new Nutnfancy knife review. its been to long old friend.
I'm glad I'm not the only adult that still makes plane noises with objects I hold! Great video nutn!
i was wondering whether to buy this and i figured nutnfancy would have a review of it, or at least i was hoping. now i can watch 18 minutes of awesomeness and i know ill make the right choice!

benchmades are pricy but always worth it.
who's this Jim Ping guy that everyones always complaining about?
This may be the best knife review you've done.
Hey Nutnfancy, got this one in the mail today, april 2013 and they still aren't putting a radius on the handle scales. Luckily because of this vid i had my sandpaper and grip tape waiting at home for the 950 to arrive in the mail. Thanks for the super helpful reviews!

I have to say this has to be one of the better looken knifes I have seen in TNP, IMO.
You have the greatest sound effects of all time !
Benchmade recently notified retailers they could no longer discount their prices, resulting in a 25% increase on the price. As much as I like some of my Benchmade knives, I'm done buying them !
As always, great video Nutn, keep doing what you are doing man!
Another homerun from Benchmade! Great review Nutn, keep 'em coming!!
it's about time!!!!!!!! aaaaaaah more knives more wilderness adventuressssssssssssssss
This is my first benchmade knife, love it, carry it every day!
You carried it for 6 months? That is truly in depth research, my friend. Kudos for doing your homework before throwing it out there. Here in Finland this 950 Rift costs 179 EUR, almost 245 USD. I would say it would have to be really awesome knife for this price.
nutnfacy's kids are gonna inherit a lot of cool stuff. lucky ducks!
thankfully already have one so I don't need to get another knife. You're hard on the bank account. Thanks for the vids
That's a beauty, nutn. Diggin' the 950.
I just bought one of these awhile ago. Awsome kife!
P.S. Thanks for serving Nuthn.
always love the knife reviews, great job as always nutn!
thank you so much. I have waited forever for you to do a full review on this D: I saw the prelim review but I wanted MOARRRR. Definitely getting this as my next blade... then a zt 350...

great video nutn and veri keep up the great work
Good review Nutn,if you like this knife you'll love the Kershaw Blitz
I've had 2 of these, think you are pretty much right on with this review. Great job!
The 950's just a beefed up 940! Would love to see a beefed up 943 with that modified clip point! That would be badass. :) Great review nutn.
I picked up a Ganzo G710, pretty darn impressed. Thanks for the tip.
@nutnfancy Hey Col.
Happy Veterans day!
Thanks for your service to our Great Nation!
Semper-Fi
BR Marine
a wonderful knife...i'm drooling over it...
I'm surprised, I couldn't find the Bone Collector more comfortable.
Cool handle. I love how it looks.
Great review Nutnfancy. Plenty of 2nd types of cool, but that price tag is a chunk to swallow at once.
Thanks Nutnfancy.

If youtube doesnt get this sub box not showing up stuff figured out, im gonna go crazy.
With benchmade you get what you pay for

He also noted in his Benchmade 730 review that he didn't like the 530 because it was a "true spear point"
Peace
BM's newish deep pocket clip, like the one on the contego and adamas, works really well on the rift.
@FightDiary Thanks guys, much appreciated.
i definitely need to pick one of these up great review as always.
Hey Nutn, I know this is an older review but I just found it and own the same blade. It's my 1st Benchmade and current EDC knife. thanks for your opnion i keep it in mind because i already doubted the automatic rift i think i`m gonna get the manual rift
if nutn made a knife that was under $200 i would buy it without any thought.
awesome review Nutn.
Yet again, I have sent my fourth Benchmade knife back in within a year. At Benchmade's price point they are producing some sub-par knives. Still very disappointed with their quality control. Sent in a Dejavoo 740, Presidio 5000, & two Mini Dejavoo 745 knives
Why isn't this blade in the HOF, NutNfancy? I collect knives, and after my 1970's Gerber Folding Sportsman III, this is the best blade I've ever held.
Thank you as always for the detailed and informative review Nutn we all appreciate it, our wallets loath it though =)
Just in time for Christmas!
Nice, I was starting to feel with draws from lack of a awesome knife review!

Use a cobalt bit to drill your liners, there specifically designed for hardened steel and are typically cheaper.
The looks on the knife are awesome, but a little expensive for me as an EDC. 2nd type of cool fore sure. Thanks for posting!
Damnit!! Something else I want to go out and buy *sigh*
Thanks for all your hard work.
@nutnfancy glad you said that.. thought I'd screwed it up some how
Ugh, revisiting this video has really made me wanna duracoat my 710, and switch out the backspacer to pillars.
I'd still press the 950 into tactical use. For me I feel the little bit of flaring is enough. Otherwise pretty much completely agree.
@Ballisticbob517 I love the 940...a reference blade for sure.
that blade is sick.
i know what my next knife will be. it looks like a shortened contego to me.
Nice knife! Darn RUclips subscription box is screwed up again. New videos not showing up :(
dang you guys are fast...... great vid
A quality tomato slicer!!! ...if you into that sort of thing. Great looking knife.
true. true. true. but, i paid $18 for mine. if you have the knife in hand, you see that it's a great value for the money.
i mentioned it because there are guys out there who have to save for two months in order to buy a $25 knife, so the rift is just a fantasy.
Very quick question, actually not about the knife, but rather the video. What is the name of the transition effect that you use to open the video? I'm starting to use Sony Vegas to edit my videos but I can't seem to find that particular effect.
How does the rift compare to the volli 1000001 I'm torn between these two knives any help
@nutnfancy When you're drilling hardened stainless there's a trick with the drill bits... don't buy cheap carbide ones make SURE it's a submicron grade carbide (if it's under $7 a bit it's not submicron generally) and don't run it faster than about 200rpm
Drop a Rift blade into a Griptillian body and THEN you got this awesome looking blade with the tactical grip.
its nice to hear your voice again nutn lol, i havent been able to watch your vids for a while, gotta a little catching up to do
@nutnfancy What is your opinion on the CRKT M16-14SF?
Nice taser...can we expect to see a review/pou vid sometime?
