I think the answer is actually simpler than that. In the intro lifepod 5 deploys basically as late as possible, making it so when it lands it is fairly close to the Aurora. It is highly likely that the other 15 lifepods deployed earlier and landed in the void, other craters or even skimmed off the atmosphere entirely and continued to wherever the Aurora was going to originally. (If you read the logs it is shown that the Aurora was using 4546B as a gravity slingshot while simultaneously scanning for evidence of the Degasi)

My personal theory as to the life pods is that Riley was repairing the floatation devices on the life pods (perhaps a production issue caused the Aurora’s life pods to be defective) and that’s why he was in one of the only two life pods that actually floated. It also might help explain why the electrical panel came loose so easily during descent: He had improperly (or incompletely) fused/screwed/shut the panel and that caused it to fail.

If the flotation devices failed, once the lifepod was deep enough it would begin to bend inward. The deeper it got, the more it would crush, including the people inside. If they got out of it, they either would have been too deep to reach the surface or killed by Ghost Leviathans.
If the flotation devices worked, they would likely have spent as long as they could in the lifepod, but eventually run out of food and tried to explore into the ocean or get to the crater… and either way, the answer eventually becomes more ghost leviathans or they died of dehydration / starvation.
