Kyle would be a PR person like Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow, or an information specialist that never sees combat but tells the Commanders all about the shit they're gonna encounter. Woody would be in Air Force data processing or some stateside blueshirt job. Taylor would be somewhere in the motorpool or artillery.

Had the choice of SATCOM operator/maintainer or EOD Technician. Kinda regret not going EOD as blowing shit up seems like a lot of fun and the EOD techs kinda just did their own thing. But went SATCOM got a 40k bonus too and a decent career when I got out.
sat com is cool, a buddy started it in the bundeswehr and he really likes it. i started as a eurofighter technician because the base is 20 minutes away frome me and i LOVE fighter jets
EOD has such a low pass rate I can guarantee even if you went for EOD you wouldn’t have been eod and would have gotten reclassified. Most of my MOS is eod reclasses (68c, nurse). They have like a 5% pass rate, usually 4-5 people graduate each class, start with I think 90.
Losing/dying to guys in pajamas seems popular, so I'd probably pick that.

Actually is super boring. One of my best friends I met in Afghanistan was a drone pilot and literally just sit in a metal box. Granted it had AC so that was nice but yea just sit in there and move a joystick around and look at black and Grey screens all day. Granted think there where like 4 times in total where he ran over and was like bro we are about to drop a bomb come watch and of course we did and it was sweet. But 12 months of mind numbing boredom for 4 bomb drops that lasted all of 30 seconds wasn't that great of a trade off haha.
Mostly boring with moments where u push a button and groups of people (mostly civilian) turn to ash and red sauce...
Dope job for people to scared its a lot easier to murder a family with children and men and women with a drone that miles away you staring at a screen with a button like a video game then to hand on hand combat

You've must have never served and know very little of the approval process that is required to even consider a drone strike. If they have even the littlest thought that innocent women and children are present we won't drop any ordinance. Take bin Landen literally the most wanted man in the world at the time. We wouldn't drop a bomb for 2 reasons women and children present and to be able to confirm it was him afterwards. And me being a satcom guy one night our fob was attacked and guess who was right beside me on the hesko wall. My drone pilot buddy laying down the hate. It's not that they are scared of actual combat it is we where given the opportunity for different just as valuable roles to support our ground pounding brothers and sisters to help them be an even more deadly force to be reckoned with.

When Kyle was talking about Helicopter Piloting, it made me think of a guy I went to Basic with who went through Warrant Officer School and became a Flight Warrant. Just getting there is hard. You have to get high test scores on the ASVAB, go through like 3 different physicals, have letters of recommendation, and be exceptionally fit. Even stuff that seems relatively ordinary can be extremely hard to come by
yeah kyle is a brainlet. just getting to the helicopter portion you have to do all the primary training that fighter pilots go through, only difference is you track to helicopters after your primary training stage. only difference is fighter pilots track to the T-38 in airforce and t-45 navy side after completing primary training.

They didnt not grow corn because it competed with domestic farms. It was because they did that by giving them fertilizer as an incentive and that all ended up in IEDs after being sold to the Taliban.

Y’all picked two of the hardest jobs in the military. Most jobs are just support jobs and are pretty cake. I think I spent 90% of my time as a ‘technician’ in the navy cleaning filters.
I’m a nurse(army) I get to work in AC, wear civilian scrubs to work, grow a beard, and don’t have to do unit PT. About as close to being a civilian as you can get and still be in the military 🤷♂️

In general the military sucks because it’s a lot of waiting around in shitty conditions for most people, a job that avoids that is the best job e.g. anything that keeps you at main base a lot pilots, communications, special forces guys doing single day raids etc. You get the best conditions by far and get to chill out in downtime in a place with decent infrastructure. Being stuck at an fob in the middle of nowhere for like 3 months would fucking suck.
A-10 pilot....is what young me would say. Adult me says counter intelligence.
No military pilot is sitting around, they're getting hours. Especially fighter platforms. Also you're not auto-hovering an Apache in a combat situation. You're flying that beast.

The funniest part is them thinking you get to choose whatever job you want.
It’s a list of what they need at that time overlaying a list of what you qualify for, regarding your ; intelligence, prior education, physical, medical history, credit check and your final security clearance approval level.
After testing and investigating to figure out all that, whatever you qualify for and they need at the time, you choose from that list.
For some low iq, GED having, low credit score suckers, the list is one or two jobs that nobody ever wants.
Think plumber or sanitation engineer(garbage man).
All pilots have to be officers so any of those routes are seriously complicated and take an ultra high level of commitment and personal discipline.
There is a reason less than 1% serve and less than 10% of those have “cool” jobs, or an exciting MOS, in the armed forces.
It takes hundreds of men to test, maintain, repair, issue, transport, arm, disarm, update, decontaminate, and decommission a....(tank helicopter whatever) and only one or two to drive them.
For every one pilot, there is a couple hundred other people doing some pretty lame jobs from counting bullets to hauling toxic materials that all help make his cool guy operations possible.
Thinking you would not only qualify for but also luck out with the perfect timing and land one of the coolest jobs is definitely optimistic.

If you are a cook it is because YOU choose cook over the other less appealing jobs on your custom made list of job options.
Which by the way, would be on the list for people that couldn’t qualify for any level of security clearance or had questionable physical history/ color blind lame duck type people.
They don’t waste a stud athlete PHD holding genus on kitchen duties so the cooking job option would not be on some stud/genus PhD guy’s list of jobs to choose from.
He would choose from the aircraft pilot/cool guy, medical type of job list.
So see, lame duck cook to stud A-10 pilot, don’t matter everyone choose their particular role.
Everyone just has different options available to them to choose from.
Most people just don’t realize how crappy of a Gi joe soldier they would be in real life until they go through entry testing and figure out the only actual services they can reliably provide for the military is a lame list of warming up everyone’s food, doing dishes, unclogging the plumbing, counting magazines etc.
But then YOU still choose.

Navy seals are also frogmen, the water and sand isn't just for discomfort factor. Since Vietnam they use them in elite infantry roles alot of the time, however they retain their speciality

I think Kyle could have have got tabbed. Then eventually in time got his scroll. Probably stay a part of the E4 mafia. SFAS is harder in terms of physical fitness, plus being qualified you can't have ailments. Same thing with SEALs. Going ranger is the way to go though. Plus what civs don't get is you can recycle, it's not a one time shot deal. Also woodys mentality would get buried, that high speed shit gets snuffed out quick in any SOF training.

Tank operator of sorts. Considering actually doing this for a career in the Canadian military, I just need to get fit before I do. Also for those curious, the Canadian military uses the Leopard 2 tank (I think A4 and A6 variants, not sure about A5). Alternatively, I would like to have that same job but for the reconnaissance/IFV type vehicles.

Being in a tank would be close to the bottom of my list I would rather be shot than burned alive in a metal box, planes are much better now but back in both world wars so many pilots also burned to death or survived but with life changing injuries, I've read tales where pilots have ejected from a burning plane only to find on the way down the wind fans the flames and they slowly fall to earth whilst burning. Horrendous, I was in hospital in East Grinstead where they pioneered plastic surgery during the war and they have so many pictures of men whose face has been burnt off, scary shit

I tried to join the airforce to be a pilot when I was 17, I guess you only get there if you have at least a bachelors degree.

When I was going to join I just wanted to go overseas. I already had a career so I wasn’t worried about a special job. I just wanted to be a fighter. I think it was called 11B but I have tattoos on my hands so they wouldn’t take me. If I was going to do the military for a career then I would have tried to be a sniper and maybe become a army ranger. Even though I have heard the rangers are very cliquey and it’s who you know and who likes you that gets you in.

I told him what I wanted to do and he said that because of the tattoos on my hands they could not except me. he said no tattoos on the hands, neck or face. I talked to someone in the army with hand tattoos and he said its something he got after he was in for a couple years and they didn't care.
