The rapport and banter between you both has me in stitches every week. It's like watching Abott & Costello, for those of us old enough to remember. Especially your back and forth about the huge mirror in the aft cabin. The pregnant pause, before the killer lines you delivered was masterful. I think you've really hit your stride this series. Nobody else imparts so much information, with such a light touch. Thanks again gentlemen. PS I barely noticed the 'chainsaw' at the end. I was transfixed by the sight of the Capt'n sitting in his stockinged feet in the water. In my fifty-five years, I've never seen such a sight before ;) PS hope the Capt'n's leg is fully healed. I imagine the warmish salt water helped it no end.

My wife and I met Bob Johnson, probably at a boat show prior to his building the Island packet Yacht company. We had looked at Irwins and endeavors, toured both factories; Bob had been a designer at both companies and the boats would have been great boats to live in at dockside. But we wanted to travel offshore and consulted with Bob for some time, then decided his first Island Packet was not ideal for crossing the Atlantic. We ended up buying a Bristol Channel Cutter and loved every minute we owned it before one of the Florida hurricanes damaged beyond what we were capable of repairing.

Back in my boat hauling days I happened to spend a weekend at a parking area in So Cal next to a marina that I was going to make a pick up from on Monday this Marina also hosted the racing sail boats, there was a buzz about a particular boat that was coming in for the upcoming race It just happened to show up at the same location and weekend I was there .the strange thing was it had no keel .A second truck showed up latter that day with the mast's rigging and the keel the keel was tarped over Strange i thought why cover the keel ? you guest it it was the very first winged keel as i call it and I got to have a sneak peek at it .how's that for a bit of sailing history trivia . I was also the first person to transport a little sail boat that circumnavigated the world called the Serafin .

She'd make a great family cruiser as the Captain said but that chain plate definitely got my attention. I'd have to tear into that a bit and see what has to be rebuilt before even splashing her as that appears to be one of her main chain plates for the rigging. A lot of TLC and she could be awesome and the Captain's analogy about the old dog really fit. I hate to say it but maybe at half the asking she'd be an okay deal but then again...
Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless.

She is a beautifully designed boat. The water damage adjacent to the chain plate worries me a little, otherwise it seems in pretty good shape for a 34 year old boat. I am curious, when you say you emphasize that it is a 'coastal cruiser', what about this boat makes you say that. Usually, I would consider a 44 footer to be capable of at least some blue water sailing. Could you educate me as to why this is not the case? Thanks and I hope you are able to keep these videos going without getting too burned out with all the traveling. I appreciate your hard work!

The boat needs alot of work at a selling price that high you should have new plumbing, electric, stowe is so old it's probably analog with mechanical gears chainplates inbeded in fiberglass bad idea and just cause you put a 25,000.00 dollar paint job does not make a boat sell , buyers are so much smarter then when this boat was produced

Perhaps I am wrong but Irwin reminds me of a Gulfstar . Same idea of a production charter boat in it's day. The old addage "you get what you pay for" comes to mind. I believe I would fix her up all pretty and flip her. Price becomes the issue really to turn a profit on the project. Critical I know but for some reason I never liked the quality of this boat. Great job once again Captain Q and Ran Day . Reminds me of back in the 70s and a hospital with really bad magazines. I stocked them up with about 300 of my own Yachting World etc in various waiting rooms. I remember this boat from one of the issues. Be well.

Only difference hulas used gloss varnish below (my estimate ion)
And the stevens we did just completed a 6000 mile run through NWP flawlessly
I have not been on a h44 but I would expect very similar boats just three feet shorter.

Oh oh so much to say. Like all production boats so many corners cut. My family in the early 80s bought a Irwin 31 citation. Why well let me tell you. We had club on Lake Minnetonka with several Catalina 30s and my family just couldn't buy off on a Catalina. So we almost bought a Sabre 30 a beautiful boat. A used Tartan 3000 and a new S2 9.1. The 9.1 would have been a killer in the MORC fleet on the lake which was a very serious deal but not at our club. So what to do.? A lot of parameters analysis.
Well the Irwin rated pretty close to the Catalina 30 in Phrf. We knew the Irwin had way more storage. Well we bought one with out every seeing one. The boat was great. Best build hell no but pretty damn solid none the less.
This 44 seems like an ideal looper boat. I was thinking only of buying a motor yacht for my loop boat. But now re- thinking that.
Sorry Q , I know from 30+ years in the business no PB!!

The issues with Irwins is the overall robustness of the structure and also the issue of how the boat handles in heavy weather (weather helm & issues with some of the fiberglass durability/construction). If you want to do coastal cruising and head to the Caribbean it's perfect fine... just those more significant crossings will really push the structure and sail-ability to the limit.

What makes it coastal only? Or maybe best is why someone wouldn’t want to use for blue water?

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  2 года назад +3

    Without Prejudice
The more i Think about the cause of the Major Structural Cracks around the Chain Plate...it occurred to me That this boat MAY have been struck by Lightening!
If the boat was struck by Lightening, then a significant amount of Damage MAY have been caused to ALL IMPORTANT PARTS Of this boat.
Perhap's potential PURCHASER'S should ask Questions, And, Seek A boat Report from a Qualified Surveyor?!!
A Lightening Strike can cause the damage as seen, but, would also Damage Just about Every Expensive item on the boat, unless she has the Necessary Built in Protection's. Which is rare!
Whatever caused the Major Cracks around the Chain Plate, i feel for the owner.
But, i would feel more for any Life which was subsequently Unnecessarily EnDangered by going on the Sea Or Ocean, in a Dangerous boat, and, that goes for any Dangerous boat.
In straightforward words Lives are more important than things.

The chainplates are a big problem. Water from top trickles down the lumber and rots. A lot of repair work. I had a 40' irwin that was demasted cause of this. To much work on checking all components on boat. Besides setting mast and hauling it to water. Too much money to start.
