A Note from Charlie & Christine: -------------------------------------------------------- Thank you all so much for reaching out! My wife Christine and I have been deeply moved by the warm wishes and support from the sailors of all the 7 seas and from the land bound occupants of all the 7 continents and bits that are surrounded by the oceans we love so much. Both Christine and I have experienced storms at sea, literally and figuratively. You have listened to Captain Q share my current cancer storm, which is ongoing with twists and turns including an emergency gall bladder removal the other day. Stories are our currency in that we own a company, Camden Writers, that specializes in oral histories for families and businesses. I thought you might like to hear a couple of our stories. In 1997 Christine and her British sailor husband David set out on their new sloop. They spent the night in Marblehead MA and headed Down East the next AM. First a stop in Manchester MA for lunch with friends. Approaching the harbor, the wind died and there was a sea still running as David walked to the bow. On his return to the cockpit, a swell swung the boom to port and smashed David in the head. He went overboard, no life jacket, and he went down quickly just off Great Misery Island. Christine, having spent about 12 hours on this new vessel, most of those hours sleeping, wasn't able to do anything to help him. A nearby vessel got David out of the water, and Christine off of the sailboat. Christine and David, still alive, were taken to Beverly Hospital where the doctor told Christine that he could keep David alive, but there was really no point as David would be a “Vegetable.” Fast forward to Camden, ME where Christine spent the next two years. A journalist by trade who had lived in Bahrain, Fiji, and Great Britain, she began to write histories for friends and found this to be her great passion. Thus began camdenwriters.com in which we are now partners, Christine writing and me, a former architect, doing the graphic design work for the books we produce. We work all across the States and in England. The week we were married in 2004, on a sunny calm afternoon, we placed David’s ashes in the sea he loved, in the quiet waters between Great Misery and Little Misery Islands. When we met, Christine still wanted to sail and our boat Halcyon has been our summer home for 15 years, cruising the coast of Maine. David is always with us when we are sailing, especially when running before the wind, when our block and tackle boom jibe preventer, which I’ve named “Davy’s Locker,” is working. Every step I’ve taken on Halcyon I’ve thought of David. We are not used to telling our own story, but you have all given us such an outpouring of love, caring, and support, we wanted to share with you. We can't tell you what your kindness has meant to us. Thank you so much, Charlie and Christine
Charlie, He sees, He hears, He knows. Scream at or whisper to Him, He will lesson. Thank you Captain Q and Randy for the chance to speak to and for Charlie.
Captain Q, you are just a sweet and decent man. I certainly will send an e-mail to Charlie, and this boat is a real gem. Bless you and Charlie and all sailors everywhere. Thanks for all these great videos.
Captain Charlie. we just saw your beautiful boat. All of us here in LSD, lower slower Delaware, are lifting you on our shoulders so you cruise smoothly. Sending you all our strength, to kick it out! Soon we want to see you cruising down east! Our kindest regards to Capt Q and Randy, our favorite sailors! Keep your fab reviews coming!
2DAY IS 12 MAY 2024 AND I WATCHED & LISTENED TO THE CAPTAIN TALK WITH CHUCK PAINE . DELIGHTED TO FINALLY SEE CHUCK PAINE & MABY IN HIS OWN WORKSHOP . THANKS ! ! !
Charlie, stay strong and fight hard we are with you and your boat is a masterpiece ! get it in the water this spring and take Captain Q sailing so we can see a video of it
My father died of pancreatic cancer. So, if this man can get through this squall, hats off! And may he hear from his family and friends: "For he's a jolly good fellow...which nobody can deny..."
Captain Q undergoing angioplasty today. The following response by Captain Q to a comment about an earlier video was posted earlier today: "Thanks for your thoughts and others have mentioned it and I have ignored it until this weekend when i checked to local hospital and as I write I am waiting to go for angioplasty this am. I have A similar experience with the slow advance of short breath so today I have 610s and one quad bypass in my history. It’s just easy to ignore it but thank you for your kind note hopefully will come out the other side ready to climb the ladder’s." Wishing Captain Q fair winds and following seas!!! See you topside soon, Captain!
Captain Charles, Prepare for Battle Stations, prepare for underway. Cast off lines, full speed ahead. I will be praying for you on this fight. My only regret is not being able to make your sure you had a full stomach under my watch. God speed brother. MS1/SS.
I really like this site because of the clever and witty humor of captain Q but now see the good captain for his compassionate integrity of his fellow sailor. Good luck to Charlie and will say a special prayer for him..
It was so awesome getting the interview with Chuck Paine. He looks and sounds like any ordinary Maine fisherman or farmer (OK, his downeast accent isn't as thick), but this man is right up there with DaVinci, Rembrandt, Picasso, etc.... An absolute genius.
What a stunner! This is definitely my kind of boat. God's rich blessing on you, Charles, as you weather this storm in your life. Stay strong and always remember, you're never alone!!
I just recently discovered the channel and watched this today. Great channel, fun and informative. Charlie, Wishing you well through your travails. I'm a retired Navy CPO. I was stationed at Newport, working out of King Hall from 2004-2007 before retiring. We'll pray for your healing, your comfort and the doctors wisdom in treatment. Fair winds shipmate!
Capt. Q is stronger than he looks. While checking the prop by pulling/pushing it with one hand, he said that he put 200 pounds of force on it. That’s one strong old sailor. Love your videos, keep them coming.
Heart of gold Capt. Q, heart of gold! So a Morris 36 and Chuck Paine in one episode is pulling out all the stops. A rating of an 18 is well deserved on this great sailor! All our best from the Crew of TITANIA to Charlie, wishing him as smooth a recovery as possible.
Shout out to Charlie. Captain Q has shown us your boat. The boat reflects the Captain and I love her. I'd sail her around the world in a minute! Charlie fight back and get well. We all wish you well!
Re Mr. Paine. Loved that segment, wish that was MUCH longer, this guy has a lifetime of knowledge to share! And to Charlie, Hang in there man, our BEST WISHES are with YOU!!!
All of the videos on this channel have been amazing. Captain Q and Randy have a great thing going and I'm a big fan. Thanks for sharing all these boats.
Capt. Q another fine job on a "Yare" boat as Robert Perry would say. Thanks a ton to Chuck Paine, what a treat to see one of the legendary designers. Be happy, be safe.
Hi Charlie I hope you have a positive result with your medical problems and that things improve for you, you have a great boat and if captain Q can't sell it nobody can. .
So sorry about the storm Charles. I lost my only brother, also Charles, because he didn't have enough time. If he did I would have encouraged him to check out the diet for a small planet. I had a department head who used it successfully with ovarian cancer. Not sure if it would work with pancreatic cancer. My brother loved to sail. Your boat is a beauty, I am glad to have seen it. Hang in there!
Best wishes to the owner Charley! My best suggestion is to get yourself a golden retriever. A beautiful friend with a heart of gold will keep you smiling in difficult times. Cheers to your speedy recovery!! Ben, Boulder City, Nevada
I t think a separate message to offer a thank you to Mr. Payne is in order. I have always liked his work. The Morris boats are wonderful. He seems like such a great guy! He wanted to say much more maybe you could do an episode with him and other notable designers that we may not have known?
I love how these episodes are evolving. What a great treat to have a story of a friend but also a boat designer provide interesting content. Keep up the good work.
Charlie, from one of those lucky enough to have met CaptainQ virtually I hope you know that though one true friend you have now many more. My family and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Remember what was once said during a very dark time, "never give in"!
Hang in there Charlie .stay strong for your recovery. Really enjoyed the tour of your yacht. Really pretty. You have obviously lavished a lot love on it.
Hang in there Charlie!!! Don’t really know ya but mad respect for a guy that keeps such a beautiful boat in such great shape. Now time to focus that energy on yourself visualize the cancer having had a nice dinner politely leaving your body. Know it will happen and it will. Take care!!
i have never sailed a foot in my life...i'm too old to start and not fluid enough to buy a sailboat anyways. but every time your video pops up, i spend 20-30 minutes pretending that i'm a serious boat buyer who plans to circumnavigate the world a time or 2. great show this one. great show. so glad i've stumbled upon it so thanks for that. good luck charlie. i sincerely mean it.
Good post, CQ. Dickerson boat builders were similar in low production but good quality for the Chesapeake anchorage: Gibson & Dobbin's Island. They built my dad's design for his 40' sloop, Vignette. A lot of good memories. And some of the best sleep of my life! :^) Nothing like sound of a wood hull and a halyard against the mast. But those damn flies! My older brother made it his mission to kill every one! :^)
Charles, fair winds and best wishes from Chicago. What a great boat! Thank you Captain Q for another nice episode. In enjoyed the special guest section. Cheers!
Wow! What a sweet story. Thanks so much Captain Q. And of course... the "complete". story. Wow! Gold ! And best wishes to the family. Maybe the boat won't sell and this boat could "stay in the family." Gold!
Beautiful boat and so well taken care of. Out of my price range. Best wishes to Charlie, my Doctor was dignosed with pancreatic cancer a year ago. He's still practicing Medicine now, because he's doing what he loves.
Prayers for you Charlie, just finishing my own voyage with neck/throat C (it put my boat shopping on hold, but thanks to CaptainQ every Thursday it became a little more bearable as something to look forward to) only 2 more radiations and 1 Chemo left, hang tough, hope to see you out on the water soon.
I wonder how long it took Randay to search through Wheel of Fortune video to find someone buying an “E”. Just another small detail to make these videos some of the most entertaining and informative vids on youtube. Well done. Thank you Captain and Randy once again.
What cracking little big boat!!! What a great episode!! Wishing Charlie all the strength and positivity whilst he navigates some stormy seas. Thoughts are with you Skipper!!
Get well Charlie and keep fighting! Attitude makes the difference, I have seen the difference a positive attitude makes in my own friends who dealt with this. It may just be me, but this 36' Morris feels larger than the Shannon 39, at least on the inside. I truly liked this one.
Get well soon Charles and enjoy the rest of your retirement. Would love to see a picture of your boat under sail, perhaps Captain Q could post one up? Stay safe.
Capt'n Q. Beautiful vessel. Best wishes and fair winds Charlie!! I purchased my current sailboat from a cancer survivor who ultimately lost the battle. . He sailed her through the South Pacific, was an incredible master, and a true gentleman. I learned a great deal from him and rechristened the boat in his honor, she's now called "Fred B. Wood". If you are ever on the west coast I'd be happy to give you and Randy a tour!
You guys are great and please give my best to Charlie. His boat is beautiful and wish I could buy it now but Covid has taken all my savings. Oh well, maybe another time. Tell Charlie not to be sad because he is selling his boat but be glad he was able to own such a beautiful boat and enjoyed her for all the years he did. Life is all about the journey. Positive thoughts and wishes Charlie, Gary Lindstrum
All the best to Charlie in his life challenge. Ill speak for all of us in Quebec. Capt'm, are those suspenders getting wider? hahaha. Great episode.. Loved the wood trims on this boat. Great find. Hope she finds a new owner that can maintain it to its high quality. Great work guys. Stay safe.

My older brother made it his mission to kill every one! :^)
