  • Ferrari 308s don't come much better than a carbureted GTB coupe with a built engine, tweaked suspension and larger wheels and tires.

I grew up watching Magnum so it was my dream cars a kid. I bought a black GTB whilst living in Spain in the 90s. Stunning car really wish I had kept it. Since then I've had a 348ts and a 355gts which the 355 was the better car but the 308 just had a basic feel to it. Thanks for bringing back good memories

@@paulthomson9709 I have to agree with you, Paul. It's not just Ferrari though. Nearly all of the manufacturers in that class have evolved into the "swoopy scoops and fins" that I just don't find flattering. Maybe it's an age issue... I'm old enough to remember the new "500 Superfast Ferrari" that we passed in Monaco (family trip) in 1963 or 64. My dad was stationed in Germany in the early '60s and everything new in that period had the graceful lines of a new E-Type or a 250 Ferrari of nearly any model, or Aston Martin or to stretch just a bit, even Bizzarrini.

Gorgeous example and underpriced even at $100K......Steering column is adjustable.. Under the lower cover/bib under the column you will find a nut/bolt set-up. Usually would be adjusted at dealership upon delivery to customer. Also, all those keys hanging off the ignition tumbler will wear it out pre-maturely.. all those keys must weigh quite a bit..

I love them too, but with the trend away from petrol powered vehicles, I am not so sure. In the Netherlands, a few years ago, they extended the age for a car to be considered an 'oldtimer' (with all sorts of benefits) from 25 to 40 years, decimating the entire enthusiast industry overnight. Sure, Ferrari's and the like were not that affected, but something similar can easily happen with those too. Like special environmental zones with emission restrictions rendering those cars far less usable.

Timeless beauty. I had a chance to use a 308 for a couple of weeks while rewiring it and they are just such a classic Ferrari. Only issue was they did like 70mph in first gear so the powerband is not really useful for around town but then again these cars were not really built to be grocery getters. But it got plenty of looks even from the girls lol.

US-spec Ferrari 308s had to meet US bumper construction and height regulations. That generally meant raising the ride-height around two inches, for most European imports of any make. Bummer. I'd guess this car is set very near the original Euro-spec ride-height. That, combined with fresh components and proper alignment settings, is why this car drives so well.

But the cost of maintenance would've been quite a stretch (just assume the engine and transmission WILL need to be rebuilt-$20-40k), and I couldn't have driven it anywhere anyway. A car like that is a magnet for anyone and everyone that wants to try and steal the car, steal something off the car, wants to key it, kick it, or what ever, just to tell their friends they keyed, kicked, or what ever a Ferrari.

As I was leaving he came back and pulled in. I had to ask him if it was real or a kit car-though I was 99% sure it was real, just from the sound of the engine, and the appearance of what I could see of the undercarriage. He said it was real, and that he'd just bought it recently. I'd never seen one of those in the flesh. They do not disappoint! The aesthetics of the design really puts everything made in the last 30 years to shame, in any price range from any manufacturer.

All of these older cars will be converted to battery cars. First by 3rd party companies. But Ferrari will eventually come around and realize they can "resell" older cars converting them to battery under the Ferrari badge. They can partner with US nationwide conversion companies that comply with their rules. The cars will have the history of Ferrari approved conversion and their resale values will remain higher than the 3rd party conversions.

No F1 Exhaust note? The Ferrari 348 is the single Biggest Bang for the Buck in Ferrari and exotic sports cars. Wait till you have an electrical gremlin with the 296. In Ferrari sports cars. Jeremy Clarkson declared the 355 “the greatest car in the world, ever.” But Less is More with the completely analog 348 as it doesn’t have the brass valve guide and/or electronic suspension issues the 355 has. Older is Easier as the 348 is the best “purely analog” Ferrari ever made according to Hoovies Garage, the Smoking Tire, Jay Emm, etc as the 348 comes without modern day features that actually detract from the experience of driving a Ferrari. Why drive a “fast” car “slow” when you can drive a slower car fast? Lastly, the 348’s 8,500 rpm flat plane crank shaft generates an Formula 1 exhaust note as F1 cars also use flat plane cranks to lower their center of gravity.

Nice video Zach. You were having too much fun driving that 308. BTW, the '78-'79 carb'd 308s (USA models) barely had 200 HP due to a Thermoreactor exhaust and low-lift cams (the same cams that were used in the 1980-'82 injected engines). So, you had about 70 more HP than a stock 1979 model. Do you like it better than your 911?

      @Retromod  4 года назад +2

Thanks. Yes, the 308 was a blast. Good to know about the actual power difference. As far as liking it more than the 911, I'd say they're just too different to really compare, since the 911 is a '69. But it was way more exciting than the '78 911 SC that I had.

I would expect this car to have a slight tendency to oversteer.

probably because of the Proportions being done correctly the body style is still,a Timeless design that keeps it a highly desireable car added with the combination of the exhaust note of the Carbireted engine it still speaks Ferrari ! i’m also thinking because of the resemblances itbhascto the Old Dinos does not hurt it with the Age group that can afford them as Dino cars in the 1970s were the rage that many Celebrities drove and in some form or fashion used in many Television and Mvie Productions ( many of which were Fiberglass Kit Cars on top f VW Beetle running gear or Pans ! but withHollywood Magic most people did not realize that was the case

Those wheels are disgusting. A '79 should have 14" wheels. Why does everybody turn beautiful classic cars into ghetto pimpmobiles?

Absolutely one of the most beautiful cars ever made - every angle is perfect.
Yes a 288 looks more purposeful and a Countach is more striking, but the 308 will always be the caricature of an exotic car.

Carburetors are great when they work properly, but unfortunately, with the ethanol blend gas we have to contend with in today's fuel, carbs can quickly gum up leading to very expensive repairs and down time.

This car will probably bee in the ballpark of the "Sprint Pack" 308 euro models only,
Ferrari offered a "Sprint Package" that was a very expensive Package in the 70s, 3000US
i think that the option was mounted by dealer because the engine needed to be run in for some specific miles before the kit was installed.
Sprint pack» including P6 cams, , Borgo HC pistons, different jetting , four exhaust pipes, modified body to take the four exhaust.
16" Speedline wheels fitted with Pirelli P7 and a bigger front spoiler
also the suspension was modified with stiffer sport springs/shocks to cope with the 16 wheels and added performance, and i think the rims where in magnesium.
Because the upgrade was so expensive it was only 4 cars in 1978 and 6 cars in 1979 that came whit the Sprint pack,(have no numbers for other early years? if i remember correctly it was about 300HP(224 kw)the specs was 5.9 0-60 and 280 km, it was a substantial increase of power from euro spek non sprint pack 255hp
original fitted "sprint pack" 300 hp 308 will not be cheap today and will probably go crazy in a couple of years.

The Euro cars are so much better looking. And I never understood what the Federal bumpers were meant to achieve; all that extra steel just transfers any accident damage further into the structure. But this one hasn't been lowered too much and the 16" wheels look great as well as allowing for more modern rubber. Very pretty car!
