Hey Jor I did a cleaning on it about 7-8 years ago. It wasn’t terribly dirty right off the machine this time around. Probably dirty enough to cause it to run rough. Thanks for watching bud! 👍
I just completed all of the maintenance steps that your video showed me how to easily perform. It started the first pull also!!! Thank you sir! You are right this model is built like a tank! Mulches grass like a dream.
I picked up one like it on Craigslist for $20 in non running condition. Turned out to be no compression and worn rings. Rebuilt the engine and now it works and cuts great.
I really appreciate the video . Just got my brother in law’s toro . Going to try this tune up and see if I can get it running . Really like your presentation style and energy. Simple concise direction
After watching several of your videos regarding these vintage Super Recyclers I got interested in purchasing one. I found one locally for $100.00. Mine may be older, it has the 6.5 Briggs, aluminum deck, and three speed console. Also electric start. Deck is perfect, not a scratch. I checked the oil and gas. Took off the bag and cut the grass for the last time. Didn't use the bag. Did a quickie oil change and put a bit of Stabil in the tank with some non ethanol fuel. Can't wait until spring to give it a full service and detailing. In one of your videos you said to grab one of these if you see one. So, I told the wife that it's totally your fault!!😁
Hey orange! No worries I’ll take the blame! Lol! Tell her you got a mower now that will outlive any of the new crap that’s out there! 👍👍 thanks for being a cool fan!

I bought one of these 4 years ago used for $100 bucks. was about the same age as yours. intended on buying a new mower eventually but then I found out how great this thing was (and how I would have to spend a bundle to get anything comparable that is built today). came here because its not starting after sitting for the winter. if you see this - I was trying to figure out if I'm getting the full amount of power out of the self propel , and if theres anything I can do to check that out. thanks again for the video.
Thanks Robert! I agree! I think the big thing is that this mower has never had time to sit and seize up. It’s been running every season. And those old toros were about as close to commercial grade as you could get. They were very well built. I’ll tell ya this, if I see one on Craigslist for sale, IM BUYING IT. They just last and their cheap to fix plus they cut great! Thanks for watching bud!
@@GarageGear I've got a old Toro Recycler (not a Super Recycler) that I'm going to fix up over the winter & sell next spring. It should be a fun project.
I have a 2005 SR4 as my main mower. Engine swapped. Deleted the BBC. Autochoke, no primer. Blacked out the ugly gray wheels. It's pretty sweet. I'd say they're entry level commercial machines. They're well built. Good video JB!
@@GarageGear Same engine that came off it. 190cc briggs except with a standard toro shaft to accept a stock blade adapter. 25mmx3-5/32" Shaft, 7/16-20 tapped hole. I also deleted the bail handle so I can pickup sticks at my own will without the engine dying.
Thank you for sharing, great tips and you make it look easy. Now I'm going to see if I could get my husband to help me and show me your video. Thank you very much
Hey JB, great video! I've got that model and noticed that your brother in laws has the paper air filter, not the original oiled foam. I've read pros and cons of both. Which do you believe is better for the engine? I have no issues cleaning the foam with dawn and re-oiling. Do you think paper catches smaller particles, assuming theres no tear? Thanks!
Hey Brad the paper filters are original. The oil filters are aftermarket. I avoid those oil filter because they can gum up carburetors. Mechanics see the same issues with throttle bodys and O2 censors. The paper ones work just fine.
I fully AGREE js12278! Most engines have similar designs and could be fixed using these procedures! It’s always satisfying to hear that engine run after it’s been cleaned! Thanks for watching bud!👍
Cool history on the mower - it's great to have "heirlooms" like that, especially when they still get the job done after so many years. Have you tried using a ultrasonic cleaner for these small carbs yet? That's next on my list to purchase & try.
This toro really is an heirloom lol! Pretty remarkable! I really should give an ultrasonic cleaner a shot. Heard many good things about them. Could be a worthy investment. If you get a hold of one let me know. How’s the new addition to the family?
He could definitely do that! The deck is still in great shape. Some discoloration but this works as it should. Probably would get another 22 years out of it. How’s life treating you this week Randal?
I would remind him of its history , and the great mechanical condition and no mower made today will come close to this reliability and dependability so he better take care of this mower .
i need a photo of the cabe that is attached with a bracket on the front of the lawnmower above the spark plug since I forgot how the bracket goes on which keeps the cable from moving around that attaches I am assuming to the carburetor on the right side of the lawnmower
Help! I've got a 5.5gts Toro Recycler that's leaking gas. I pulled the aircleaner and cover off to find two gas inlets on the carb. One has the line coming from the tank and the other has just a 3" angled hose going to nowhere and I can't find any place it should go. Any suggestions? The short hose going nowhere is the one leaking gas. Thanks.
Hey Grady I’d have to see it in person but I’m guess the short tube is the breather tube that hooks onto the back of the air intake plate. I would clean your carb out and check everything inside. Usually that’s where the problem is. 👍
Thank you. Question, got a mower that starts,,,, just weak as heck... the grass doesn't go to the back of the bag so it acts full very quickly. How do I fix this?
I have a 5.5 hp from 1995 that is running rough revving up and down. The air filter looks fine and so does the spark plug. Should I clean the carburator?
I personally would have stuck with the recommended conventional 30 weight or maybe conventional 10w 40 if the motor is super worn. I think full synthetic is an overkill for those briggs quantums. if that engine is worn synthetic will do worse than good. It will burn faster and expose potential leaks. Otherwise great video. They sure don’t make mowers like they use to these days.

Hey Mark they are great machines if you take care of them! If I find one on Craigslist that’s in decent shape I may just grab it lol! Thanks for watching!
Mine doesn't want to start easily but Once it starts it runs well and restarts well. I noticed when I pump the bulb a bunch of times before trying to start it, the gas runs onto the deck so I think the bulb isn't pushing the gas where it needs to be to prime. Something clogged I can check?
Hey clearanceman! I’m wondering if you’re priming it too much? Or too many times? If it does it all the time I would clean the carb to see if that helps and any other surrounding parts. 👍
@@GarageGear OK, I need to look more carefully, the path the primer pushes the gas into the carb may be somewhat clogged so it's not getting into the carb but just running down on the deck when I primer too much. And yes, I might be primering too muc but three pushes does nothing and 10 does nothing but cause dripping gas so I think it's clogged.
So grabbed the wrench to undo the bottom of the carburetor and that 10mm nut is round. Tried the vice grips on that round nut , it is almost like it is welded on , not budging! Amazon has it available for 20+ bucks plus shipping so that is the next buy .
