Met Ralph Carter back in 1981. He was appearing in Harlem at a Junior High School auditorium filled with kids. When the event was over, he needed a ride to Brooklyn (He was living on St James Place) and I offered, since I lived in Brooklyn too and he accepted. It was great having him in my car and I found him to be a very bright young man. Now as we're crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, I asked Ralph for a small favor, which was, if he would accompany me home to meet my family before taking him home. He graciously accepted. Now as we're getting out of my car in the Wyckoff Gardens housing projects, the looks on the faces of the people sitting on the benches were priceless! My family was in disbelief as "Michael" from "Good Times" was standing in their living room! Great guy!
John Amos, a fine actor, left Good Times because he was tired of seeing the depiction of not only his own TV children, but other TV teenagers on the show, disrespecting their parents. This, he tolerated only for so long. He told the show's producer his concerns regarding this problem. He threatened to leave the show if this problem was not resolved. The producer knew he had a goldmine and was not about to change anything. So, Mr. Amos left the show. And after he left the show, he said in an interview, that if sitcoms keep depicting these bad examples of child behavior toward their parents and their elders, this will or may affect their behavior in later life. And if you notice closely, he is absolutely right! In my opinion, I definitely agree with him! In these sitcoms, children see and treat their parents like friends than authority figures. Personally, my parents never asked me to do anything, they ordered me when they wanted something done! It was, " Yes, Sir or No, Sir! Or, " Yes, Mother or No, Mother !" It wasn't " Yeah or Nah "! I was taught RESPECT, not only to my parents but to my elders! This is something that is not shown on sitcoms and it's a real shame! It's a child's duty to respect their parents, not the other way around! I loved my parents very much and I'm glad that they taught me the right things in life, like courtesy, kindness, respect, true friendship and love for God and my neighbor. I'm 66 years old and have not forgotten what my parents have taught me. For all of you youngsters out there, I hope and pray that one day you can say the same.
And that is exactly what has happened to society. They were pushing it, it has been an agenda to break up the family and to take God out of America, satanism is on the rise and fast. Christians are now being persecuted more now than ever. Good for him in quitting for the RIGHT reasons. God Bless, a man with integrity.
Great show one of the best during it's time and still today. Ms. Ester Rolle who played Florida (Flo) Evans was a beautiful Nubian lady, in my opinion, as well as a gifted and talented actress. Truly loved and missed.
This was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid. I watched it after school every day. Even though they were poor I always wished that Florida and James were my parents, maybe because my parents were not still together and what you always got out of every show was how much they loved each other. It was great to see what everyone is up to even though I am reading this a few years too late.
Again, nice compilation, although not quite sure why there's a slide that says Good Time was the first black TV comedy. Julia with Diahann Carroll ran from 1968-1971 and Amos N Andy ran from 1951-1953.
I watched this as a kid and am rewatching it again now. What a great cast for this show. Gotta love the dad. He takes no crap from the kids! Where are father's like that today!
I'm from Texas, when I was young and watching Good Times, I was always fascinated by the Evans family and every other family living in those high rise apartments. I couldn't picture anything like that...I wondered why we didn't have that here. Of course as I got older, I realized it was better since we had yards to play in.
Good Times is among my favorite tv sitcom show of all times. I love the show, what great times & moments watching this show as a kid growing up in the early and mid 1980s! :) ♥
My favorite's are the show's with James on them. I really liked having the entire family, with James and Florida being the head and the pillars of the family, and both set an example for their children.
Most people dont know that Good Times is a spin-off of a spin-off of All in the Family. Florida(Ester Rolle) was the housekeeper for Maude(Bea Aurther), Edith Bunker's cousin.
I didn't know Maude was Edith's cousin. So, you produce All in the Family, which spins off Maude(+Jeffersons)>Good Times. Wow talk about television dominance or the Midas Touch.
todd krager I think it was the way I put the (+jeffersons) in my post. It appears I'm saying the Jefferson spun off Maude. I was just listing the many tentacles of ATF as they came to me...they were all my favorite shows too. Maude not so much...well, Adrienne Barbeau, uhh, won't go there...lol!!

I don't know why Esther R who played the character Florida left the show because she thought JJ Jimmie Walker's character was a bad role model for black kid's. go figure on that one because look what we have today for role models.
As for her leaving for those reasons, that was bull. She left because Jimmie walker was receiving a higher salary. It was about money, not social conscience.
@@georgfriedrichhandel4390 Back then, I remember it being said that because the show was such a hit that John Amos wanted more money and that he wanted Esther Rolle to join with him. Also, they didn't want to pay the actors more, so he quit. If that was the case, I wish they would've paid him more. The show was better with him on it.
@@divadoll606 I must confess that I had not heard that but if it's true, then it confirms what John and Esther once stated which was that this series focused too much on the J.J. character which was something both lamented. That may be why the producers decided not to pay John more money because they figured that the series could live without him.
Thanks for posting however the sitcom was set on the Northside in Cabrini-Green. Though the project was never mentioned by name in the show. Cabrini-Green is also the setting for Cooley High.
Cabrini green was on the south side. it had it's own school, grocery store, laundry mat, in other words it was a city in a city. when it was built it was beautiful. it was for the poor to get them on their feet. but the people let it run down.

The show wasn't filmed in Cabrini Green. They filmed the outside of the building. Based on that It was implied that the show was filmed there. However, the set was arranged to look like an apartment inside of Cabrini Green.
James died at the begining of the 1976-77 season. I know this because that episode aired right after my father died. The episode aired September 21, 1976. Whenever I see this episode is coming on, I try and catch it. I usually cry while watching it, thinking of my dad (especially the part where Michael is upset that Florida is laughing and enjoying herself at the party). That reflected my mood at my dad's funeral.

Nice video but I just have 2 problems. The information on the actors disappeared too quickly, and Penny was not know as the "Millicent" one. It was Michael.
Esther Rolle thought JJ was a bad role model for young Blacks? He was an artist with a sense of humor, didn't do drugs, Never assaulted anyone. WTF is her problem?
His character throughout the show while they were on indicated that he was "unintelligent"...it should have changed at least after a while. But with Michael and Thelma being very smart...for me it balanced out.
