I've had great results with plastic, which I used to train my Corgi puppy 13 years ago. Unfortunately, she passed away last year, but now I'm getting another Corgi puppy, so I will again use a plastic one. Thanks for the video, I was unsure as to what size to buy, so your video was very informative!
I raise guide dog puppies, so I have a new little puppy every 15 months or so Because of this I use a metal wire crate with a cover. I never thought to put something larger on top of the crate to keep it from touching so the puppies don't chew the cover. Great idea! I am going to add one of those ASAP just in case. I use the plastic crates when I take my puppy to work though because I find it keeps them calm around all the noise at work and allows them to nap. The larger size isn't a problem at work because I'm right there when they wake up for a potty break
Will be getting a wire crate for the main crate in the living room, and covering (as recommended, away from sides), but for a secondary crate to move around the house, a plastic crate.
We have a metal crate from a previous dog that is way to big...we are adopting two rescue dogs so we will want to keep them separated and crated for a while when we are not right there paying attention to them. I was opting for the wooden, but the first dog is a one year old pocket staffy mix...and your comment about the "teething/chewing" stage got me thinking...maybe the first crate will be metal (or even partition the larger crate)...thanks for the tips...new to your channel but plan to watch more!
We definitely recommend metal or plastic to start! We're so glad this video was helpful. We hope to see you around! While you may not have exact littermates, this video will be a great one to watch while you're raising two puppies together. It's full of great tips: ruclips.net/video/x3nefq0CeyU/видео.htmlsi=E2k1fQxuw7u-2aXm
We chose a metal crate for our puppy. Got lucky to watch your video at the right time. I also use the wood on top with cloth to cover the sides. He loves crate time !
I'm crate training my miniature labradoodle in a medal crate with a divider. I also have a plastic crate that he flew in and was delivered to me in. Because he may have peed in that crate during his travels, I will clean it thoroughly and use it as his travel crate. Thanks Michele for sharing all of your puppy training knowledge!
I'm probably going to go with a plastic crate initially. I'm going to be training a service dog so it needs to be able to travel well to work and events I go to. But down the road I'll probably get a fabric one just because I can trust them more and I carry enough clunky stuff in my travels. Plastic kennel though could stay at work, beneath my desk.
Definitely going for the metal I checked the reviews and I couldn’t even finish it’s just too much but it’s five star so I think I’m going for the metal
We are getting a zwergschnauzer puppy in about 4 weeks. We will be getting a plastic crate. I watched all your videos. They are amazing! Thank you for helping me prepare! I got rid of all the cables lying on the floor, plants that are toxic and I built a little fence to the kitchen. She will be staying in the studyroom for the first month. If she is a good girl, she will get the living room the month after. Can't wait!
We have got a 11wk old Malshi. Only found your video after we had started crate training with canvas crate. However he hasn’t had one accident inside it nor does he chew it. It’s so cosy. He loves it! Our only issue is with him biting us!🤣
I DIY'd a wooden crate without a top (using an old cradle), for my dog to be in, when I'm in the house (working from home because of covid ...) but since he grew up a bit, he can now escape from it during the night or when I'm out of the house. So, I need to buy a crate. I was thinking metal, but after watching this video, I changed my mind to plastic. Thank you for the help!
I have two bichon puppies but have not used my metal crate. I can’t see locking them up but perhaps I am wrong. I would need two crates she says. I hadn’t thought about them chewing a soft crate as that’s what I was thinking.
As your pups grow and advance through the teething and adolescent phases, you'll really need the crates to keep them safe when you're gone, and also to help them get necessary rest. Yes, two crates will be necessary, along with two pens for when they are awake but you can't supervise fully.
I believe in having two crates. One for traveling and one for home. The metal one is the main crate and the plastic is the travel one. It's mobile...used to travel to upstair and to the vet and events with us. I need a new crate.
We always big a crate that’s too big, we stuff it with cardboard boxes and blankets to fill the space in tho to make it smaller until they grow into it as the breed I get (Australian cattle dog always!) grows extremely quickly. We also spray the fabric with Apple cider vinegar to stop them from ripping it apart
I would not recommend bedding in a crate if your pups are prone to chewing items like blankets that are left in there. This is an extreme safety concern as well. I recommend this video for more information ruclips.net/video/sNB9Yaoc1Eo/видео.html
@@HowToTrainADreamDog she did fine with not chewing thankfully and we alway kept an eye on her during the day when she was running around. I’ve found cattle dogs don’t tend to chew things unless it’s an actual dog bed. Wish I had found this before we got our puppy. We had got him a cloth crate, he hated it and quickly learned he could jump on the side or the door and flip the crate to move it. He looked like he was he a hamster wheel. He was on his feet the whole time but I would have to put him under a table with chairs on ether side of him. I was afraid he would hurt himself if we continued to use it. I have been afraid to get him a new crate, as he gets very upset when ever he see the old one, but I did finally get him a plastic one. Now just to get him to be ok with it.
@@HowToTrainADreamDog I’m afraid that the first one has traumatized him. He is extremely afraid of the new one. Not even is favorite treats give by his 13 year old big brother, sitting in the back of the crate will get him to go in.
I had a metal crate for my previous dog. Used it for 14yrs. Its far too big for my new puppy. Was thinking of a soft crate for portability but listening to this video made me remember pups chew! Will most likely go for a metal one indoors and a plastic for travel. I don't like the idea of a plastic one inside. Im still debating with myself
We will be getting a new puppy on the 2nd of December, We have purchased a plastic crate for her, but we do have a metal crate from before that is in excellent condition with dividers and a removable tray, so we will see which one will work best when we bring Scarlett home.
That is awesome! Metal crates are great because they are collapsable and you can use the divider as they grow. Plastic crates are more sturdy and safe for travel, so you may want to use that one in the car as you travel with your pup.
We discourage bedding for dogs under a year of age. It can often becomes a chew toy and has the potential for dangerous choking or intestinal blockage, especially if the crate and unattended. Bedding might be something you introduce in the future. Some pups around a year of age are past the potty training and chewing stage and enjoy a bed in the crate or in the area the family relaxes. Each dog is different and you’ll have to consider your dog’s individual chewing habits and preferences. As with all new supplies, watch carefully after introducing it for any dangerous habits that develop!
We're getting our new family member in one week time.. I've been thinking which crate I should go for, and this video clip helps me to decide! Thanks a lot always!!
We are picking up our 9 week old puppy in 4 days. Which crate is recommended exclusively for car travel? We are getting the wire crate for our home, but it is too large for the car. Thank you for any suggestions.
It's a nice crate. Some of our students have mentioned that they wished that crate wasn't so expenseive espeically when they had to upgrade to the next size.
Hi! I’ve been watching all your videos and getting ready for my puppy but having a hard time picking the right size crate. I will have a mini Australian labradoodle do I get a 24inch or 30 inch with divider or 36 inch ? The breeder said it will grow from 18-25lbs. Thank you!
You've mentioned feeding a puppy their meals in their crate, in the interests of creating positive associations with the crate. But you also say to get a crate that's just barely big enough to fit my puppy. How do I feed my puppy meals in it's crate if the food dish can't fit in the crate along with my puppy? Great videos!!!
Ruh roh! We'll look into that. Yes, you can put a panel on top of the crate and then drape the sheet over it. That allows the sheet to hang down but still be inaccessible to the puppy. If the sheet it too close to the crate the puppy could pull it in and chew on it.
We are getting a goldendoodle in December. The breeder estimates that he will mature at around 40 pounds. I just don’t know what size wire crate to get. I want to get one that will fit him when he is “full grown”. Any suggestions?
Except that I want to have the crate ahead of time and other than 40 lbs worth, as estimated by the breeder, I have no idea how big he will actually get. I am thinking the 36” one.
Good point, Glenn. You might want to try the wire crate instead, which allows for a little more airflow. Here is one we like: howtotrainadreamdog.com/metal-crate
Our new puppy was absolutely terrified of being in her covered metal cage. If the door is closed she'd bark, howl, cry, chew the bars, paw the bottom tray etc. It was awful. She can now sleep in the crate but ONLY with the door open. Perhaps we have to buy a plastic crate.
My daughter and I will be heading back east 🇨🇦 to collect our puppies and fly ind back. Thought we’d use soft side carriers for the cabin. Suggestions?

The plastic crate you recommend has misleading measurements -- it measures from shoulder to shoulder rather than the actual inside of the crate itself. Do you have another recommendation?
Good video. I was going to get metal but now think I will get plastic. How do you accomodate for the puppy's growth ? I will be getting Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy. Do I get a small crate to begin with and then get bigger one as he ages? What characteristics set apart a good plastic crate? . Thank you for any replies
With plastic crates you have to keep replacing it as they grow, I would recommend a wide crate while they are growing and switch to a plastic one later if you want
What size crate should I get if my puppy is going to be growing really fast she’s a lab/st.bernard mix and is almost 8 weeks right now and about 22 inches long

My dog is 10 years old, recently adopted. I got a wire crate for him. He digs at the tray and slides it out from under the crate. Then he poops/pees on the floor underneath. I'm buying a plastic crate for him. How do I get him to fully empty his bladder outside and use his powers for good?
Hi Wendy. Make sure you are giving your dog plenty of time for his potty breaks. Sometimes they can get distracted and this can keep them from finishing their business. Thank you for your tips. I have a 4 month old Morkie and just yesterday, 1/3/2021, got her paw caught in the metal crate. What would be a good crate and should I stick to a plastic one ? Thanks 😊
So sorry we are just seeing this comment now. I apologize that we didn’t see it sooner. We hope all is well with you and your pup. We recommend holding off on any bedding until your pup is older.
I have a nightstand that I want to convert into a crate for my puppy coming home soon. Is that ok instead of the metal crate I have for training? Is it ok to use both at the same time?
I'm getting a Bernese Mountain dog. If I choose a Crate of her size.. it Will be too small in two weeks! How to choose something that will last? I want a plastic Crate...
Congrats! Bernese pups are precious. A crate that is too big or two small can cause discomfort and a negative association with the crate, so it’s important to use the right size. This can require a little bit of trial and error as the puppy is growing. A crate that is too big could result in a puppy that goes to the bathroom in one spot and sleeps in another. Your puppy should have just enough room to stand up fully, turn around and lie down in his/her crate. Here is the plastic crate that we recommend! Plastic Crate: howtotrainadreamdog.com/plastic-crate Another option is to look into a metal crate that comes with a divider. Here is the one that we recommend: howtotrainadreamdog.com/metal-crate
Hi! Crate training......I understand generally that undesired behavior must not be rewarded. So: My puppy is sure to be smart enough to realize when he is about to be released from his crate; and he is sure to be excited. How can I calm him before release so that he doesn’t conclude obnoxious behavior is rewarded with release? Tom/Rockford , Illinois
Search “Crate training a puppy” there are videos that talk about that topic. Generally: Wait for puppy to settle and give puppy a treat when settled. Only open the front gate a little, make sure puppy won’t bolt. Only open completely, with hand ready to gently close if necessary, when you are sure puppy won’t dash. The video explains it’s a process. Reward with treat after each successful step. Patience seems to be the key. Good luck with your search!
I might get a goldendoodle, what crate is best for that I want you opinion please or anyone else Who has owned a golden doodle please give your opinions in reply because I’m not quite sure what to do yet
We recommend the plastic crate for all breeds of dog. Try to find one that has a divider, you will have to adjust as they grow. For more specific questions regarding training, we recommend you post your questions in the Puppy Training with Michele Lennon Facebook group: howtotrainadreamdog.com/FB-group
No, that might be choking hazard for your pup. Instead, try to get a crate with a divider. Check out this one we recommend: howtotrainadreamdog.com/metal-crate
I question how will my puppy know it’s time to sleep the entire night in the crate if I have to leave her half the day for work in the crate covered up? Even if I get a break to let her out I will need to go back to work & possibly run errands afterwards. Is having her covered up in a crate for that long better than leaving her in the playpen with her crate during the day?
Hey, your “Puppy Training Crash Course” link in the description is no longer valid or working. As matter of fact, a couple of the Amazon crate suggested links are no longer valid neither. However, Thanks for the informative video.
We recommend you have one crate indoors, always supervise your pup outdoors and you can use the same crate for travel if it fits in your vehicle. You can also use a harness and a seat belt that buckles into your car's seat belt system. Here is one we recommend. howtotrainadreamdog.com/carseat-harness
Yes, cover the front. I leave the back uncovered and pushed up against the wall for better airflow but less visibility to things that might over-excite your pup while they are in their crate.
Yes, sometimes jaws too. In general we find the plastic crate to be a better option, but sometimes it's not practical due to size so the wire one is also a possibility.
Every time she explain about crates for example. Wooden crate- *shows plastic crate title* Sorry this is not hate I was just saying that was shown at the video again *NO HATE ONLY SHOWN*
Dogs crates are cruel and are used for the benefit of the owner and not for the dog. No animal should be shut in a cage. How would you like it? If you can't provide a safe environment for a dog then don't get one. They should free and safe or at least kept in a large dog proof room overnight or in the owners bedroom. Cages are cruel.

wow now I definitely know I chose right size and type, oh and by the way I chose the plastic ones.
I have a shih Tzu dog, what crate size do you recommend?
Just ask the shopkeeper for lap dogs
I guess small is good
If I use a plastic crate do I cover that like you suggest for a metal crate?
Yes, you can! Just be sure that there is still proper airflow for your puppy!
When I get 2 mini dashound puppies can they sleep together or separate? Which would be best?
Puppies should always sleep in separate crates. This video will talk more about this: ruclips.net/video/p_RDIS9yoVo/видео.html
German shepherd is a true old tomorrow. What size do u recommend. I’m needing to get one today or tomorrow. Please help
*wire
AndyPorterMusic did u find the transition period difficult?
@@JohnandMalie have not got him yet but will let you know next month. Get him at end of June
What size crate should I get if my puppy is going to be growing really fast she’s a lab/st.bernard mix and is almost 8 weeks right now and about 22 inches long
Ariel O'Dell I would get a 48” wire crate with a divider.
i have a metal crate for my lab but he just wont go in there?
The metal crate is a great choice. Crate training takes time and patience. We have many videos on the RUclips channel all about crate training. This is the most recent one that will give you the top advice: Best Crate Training Tips: ruclips.net/video/rnMFXmzh_Cc/видео.html

@@HowToTrainADreamDog thanks for your response, i shall give that a try
My dog is 10 years old, recently adopted. I got a wire crate for him. He digs at the tray and slides it out from under the crate. Then he poops/pees on the floor underneath. I'm buying a plastic crate for him. How do I get him to fully empty his bladder outside and use his powers for good?
Hi Wendy. Make sure you are giving your dog plenty of time for his potty breaks. Sometimes they can get distracted and this can keep them from finishing their business. Feel free to check out our Better Puppy Behavior Workshop to learn more about how your puppy’s brain works and how to adjust your training dial accordingly.

Thank you for your tips. I have a 4 month old Morkie and just yesterday, 1/3/2021, got her paw caught in the metal crate. What would be a good crate and should I stick to a plastic one ? Thanks 😊
plastic, I already have one for my cats but we don't use it anymore and we are looking for a puppy to join our family.
Hi for the metal crate, do you have the puppy sleep on the black plastic slate in it or do you put a dog bed on top of that
So sorry we are just seeing this comment now.
What size crate is best for a lab puppy..8 weeks old and 14” tall?
My dog is 48 pounds. The sizing guide options is 30-50 or 50-70
Which size do I get? He’s a husky mix
Where can I get one of those leashes in the back ?????

Another option is to look into a metal crate that comes with a divider. Here is the one that we recommend: howtotrainadreamdog.com/metal-crate
Still don't know
Your dog can guide you on which one he/she likes best!
Does anyone know if there’s any plastic crates that have dividers?
Some of the newer plastic crates have dividers!
If the crate is too big can i put some pillows on the back to make it a little smaller?
No, that might be choking hazard for your pup. Instead, try to get a crate with a divider. Check out this one we recommend: howtotrainadreamdog.com/metal-crate
I’m about to get a shih Tzu
I will have a puppy very soon but I am confused about the right size of the crate, she is a Westie 3 months old. Would you please help me with this?
Did you figure what crate to start with? Our westie is coming on Saturday
I question how will my puppy know it’s time to sleep the entire night in the crate if I have to leave her half the day for work in the crate covered up? Even if I get a break to let her out I will need to go back to work & possibly run errands afterwards. Is having her covered up in a crate for that long better than leaving her in the playpen with her crate during the day?
i think it's better to leave her in a playpen during the day but make sure she has something to occupy herself with
I tried to click the link for the crash course and it didn't work
Hey, your “Puppy Training Crash Course” link in the description is no longer valid or working. As matter of fact, a couple of the Amazon crate suggested links are no longer valid neither. However, Thanks for the informative video.
We have had my cavapoo puppie for one day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im getting a puppy this weekend and I am probably going to get a plastic crate
Do you recommend separate crates for indoor and outdoors and travel? Or should we just stick to one crate?
We recommend you have one crate indoors, always supervise your pup outdoors and you can use the same crate for travel if it fits in your vehicle. You can also use a harness and a seat belt that buckles into your car's seat belt system. Here is one we recommend.
howtotrainadreamdog.com/carseat-harness
😊
Informative, but background music is too loud and almost unnecessary.
When I cover the crate, should the front be covered too?
Yes, cover the front. I leave the back uncovered and pushed up against the wall for better airflow but less visibility to things that might over-excite your pup while they are in their crate.
We are going to choose plastic
Awesome! We hope that worked out well for you and your pup!
Metal
my puppy is so smart he escaped his crate at night
Toes are also more likely to get caught in wire crates.
Yes, sometimes jaws too. In general we find the plastic crate to be a better option, but sometimes it's not practical due to size so the wire one is also a possibility.
Plastic. Just not sure if the size I purchased is too big.
A good rule of thumb is to have a crate that is 2 inches above their head while standing up and 2 inches past their nose and tail.
Every time she explain about crates for example.
Wooden crate- *shows plastic crate title*
Sorry this is not hate I was just saying that was shown at the video again *NO HATE ONLY SHOWN*

Thanks for your engagement!
Plastic. Everything thing you said is right on
Dogs crates are cruel and are used for the benefit of the owner and not for the dog. No animal should be shut in a cage. How would you like it? If you can't provide a safe environment for a dog then don't get one. They should free and safe or at least kept in a large dog proof room overnight or in the owners bedroom. Cages are cruel.
