What's really impressive to me about this game is how well the FMV characters are anchored in 3D space. That seems like a pretty difficult trick to pull off on hardware back then. A lot of games which used FMV for characters back then just stuck them in a fixed position on screen.
Or an Unreal engine remake. I once found a post on Reddit years ago where someone was trying to start making one for the Unreal engine. But considering I haven't heard anything about it since then, it's likely that it never even got off the ground.

There was a total conversion of the 3DO version of Killing Time in the works for GZDoom at one point. But sadly, it's been canceled/dormant for quite some time. Boy oh boy was it beautiful! With Killing Time: Resurrected announced recently I legitly had a hype that I haven't had for a Nightdive ReRelease since Doom 64, and I think one reason for that is because of the charm and design that the game has in general. The visuals, the sounds, the acting, even down to the open-area style exploration, really surprised me considering the game got released barely 2 years after Doom. Another interesting thing that I discovered recently was a PSX build, I would say it's similar to the Half Life Dreamcast port in terms of how far it was into development, although buggy you can pretty much play it from start to finish and see every cutscene and listen to every song. I played through a bit of the unreleased PlayStation port; definitely an interesting game. I believe that version has a much better framerate, while being a faithful port of the 3DO version unlike the PC. I didn't stick with it because I thought the level design got quite confusing early on. It's a shame because I think some QoL improvements could make this a more enjoyable game to play. EDIT--I take back my recommendation of the PSX version. It has distinct levels which the 3DO version does not, and while the framerate is better, it's inconsistent, ranging from 20-60 fps, so even if you're running a VRR monitor the range isn't quite acceptable. I think the best way to play this game currently is to use the Opera 3DO core in RetroArch; you can then overclock the emulated CPU by 4X to play this game at 60 fps.
the entire library is sitting on an 8tb hard drive unused and the Emulators only barely function. I'm strongly considering it System would look sleek right under my N64.
I know you like to overclock the emulator with 3DO, any chance of getting this up to 30fps? PS I wanted this bad as a kid, those screen grabs looked too good to be true.
Fantastic game for its time for sure VGE. Shame it came at a time when the 3DO was just on it's way out after the Playstation was debuted and many didn't pay attention to this game. Anthony..
It's an FPS "openworld" from 1995. It's a good game, just old and kinda jank like everything else in the 90's. Only a few games from the 90's aged well compared to modern optimized controls and gameplay concept.
@@sunderark Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying all the 2D stuff is amazing or doesn't feel dated. But there's a heck of a lot more of the 2D stuff that holds up great compared to the 3D stuff from that era. Street Fighter Alpha 3, Third Strike, Garou, Raiden Fighters Jet, Super Metroid, Gunstar Heroes and plenty more all hold up much better and don't have the aged controls or jank the early 3D stuff had.
Unfortunately it looks like Nightdive recently ported/remastered the DOS version instead of the much more atmospheric 3DO one. I hated the DOS version, they ruined it. They made the DOS game play and look more like a custom DOOM WAD instead of the creepy haunted house of the 3DO because of the way they changed the level design. The way the alpha channel looked on the 3DO FMV sprites was far better than the 8 color PC conversion. The rooms seemed to fall off into darkness better on the 3DO but looked more cartoony, glowy and brightly lit on PC. I didn't like it but I guess they catered to the then popular DOOM craze at the time. Too bad because the true 3DO version seems lost to time other than playing on an emulator . The main problem with the 3DO one is the frame rate. Fix that and it would be the best version.
@@VideoGameEsotericaIf I'm not mistaken, the 3DO console was just as expensive as the NEO GEO aes console. The 2nd (3DO) model I bought at that time was 600 $CAD.
ooof. comparing this game to bioshock is a crime. the only similarities are the atmosphere and story, but the gameplay loop is inferior to the original doom.
I whole heartedly disagree. Open world fps. Environmental story telling. Art deco design. Splicing is basically the concept of the water clock and modifying the body to achieve immortality

Sci fi and horror are the genres i find most interesting. Sci fi to me is kinda like techno horror in a way
Then you’d def love it
I saw 3DO odes on Stone age Gamer im more tempted than ever to make that leap. Make use of that S-Video switch
Gotta do it
the entire library is sitting on an 8tb hard drive unused and the Emulators only barely function. I'm strongly considering it
System would look sleek right under my N64.
Def gotta
i am stuck on the pc version for YEARS wher ei don't knwo where to go and what to do, just wondering aimlelssly
That’s half the fun. But it is way more maze like than 3DO
Great video as always. I'm interested in trying this but probably won't buy a 3DO ... How much worse is the PC version?
Totally different. Like a different game different
I think about the 90s and imagine they were not so long ago but man I was born in 1995... Lol
Haha I was born in the 80s so I feel you
PO'ed is a great game !👍👍👍
It’s a wild time
I know you like to overclock the emulator with 3DO, any chance of getting this up to 30fps? PS I wanted this bad as a kid, those screen grabs looked too good to be true.
You can but it behaves badly
The jump really fucks up when you do
Fantastic game for its time for sure VGE. Shame it came at a time when the 3DO was just on it's way out after the Playstation was debuted and many didn't pay attention to this game.
Anthony..
Yes it had bad timing but even with that it shined for the little bit of time it had
This game has a pc version on steam it’s different in some ways but still there.
Looks like a great game. Would love to give it a go.
Emulates well :) go play
Have you played the new remake?
Check my uploads ;) Fridays vid
come from nightdive Resurrected trailer.
Lot of people have :)
Oh hell Yes! I love this one, hidden gem is right !
Glad there are more fans out there :)
Think there are nostalgia glasses heavely in use here😂
Oh I heavily admit that lol
It's an FPS "openworld" from 1995. It's a good game, just old and kinda jank like everything else in the 90's. Only a few games from the 90's aged well compared to modern optimized controls and gameplay concept.
@@undeadsamurai8590 *only a few 3D games from the 90's - the 2D stuff is still master class.
@@tomstorm255 That's also a bit of nostalgia glasses in that statement.
I had this around 1998 I think
Late but worth it!
NIGHTDIVE ANNOUNCED A REMASTER/REMAKE!!!
Good news...😊
Today!
They’ve remastered the FMV enemies for this and I’m sure they will alter the lighting. I’m just happy it’s happening
I wanted this game, at that the time it was released, but it was way too expensive.
3DO wasn’t cheap back in the day
@@VideoGameEsotericaIf I'm not mistaken, the 3DO console was just as expensive as the NEO GEO aes console.
The 2nd (3DO) model I bought at that time was 600 $CAD.
It was as expensive for sure
Do you write a script, or just speak off the cuff in your videos?
Off the cuff. I’ve never written anything for the channel
ooof. comparing this game to bioshock is a crime. the only similarities are the atmosphere and story, but the gameplay loop is inferior to the original doom.
I whole heartedly disagree. Open world fps. Environmental story telling. Art deco design. Splicing is basically the concept of the water clock and modifying the body to achieve immortality
I have to agree. just because it's Art Deco doesn't mean it's in the same realm. System Shock was already out for a year.
No I’m automatically right! Lol playing around
What are your thoughts on the PC version? It looks like an almost completely different game
Fun but nowhere near as charming
the environments seem interesting
One of my fav parts honestly
PC has a better outdoor environment and more cohesive physical environment for sure.
It's a good game but it did have a few problems with the game !!!
1995 is decades earlier than 2007?
I think I was referring to today
So it's BioShock but with flappers then?
FlapperShock
Looks like great fun and clearly Doom inspired but is screaming out to be upscaled.
It’s a bit pixelated but I’m into it
I cant get this one to run well on my Steam Deck and i have no idea why lol
How so?
@@VideoGameEsoterica oh 3do emulation through Emulation Station/retroarch. Other games run fine, but killing time just feels off and runs...off? I'm sure I messed with a setting at some point lol
did yo tried windows version ? i was not even aware this game existed back in day
@@LordDeBahs no I suppose I could though! I've been emulating the 3do one
Totally diff and not as good
Why just isn't there engine to run these obscure games like gzdoom for the classic doom?🤔... Discovering games like these lately without knowing about it before peeves me
Someone was working on it
@@VideoGameEsoterica can you please tell more info so I know what keywords I need to google about
Gzdoom killing time
@@VideoGameEsoterica thanks
👍
Since this is your favorite game i assume you know how to play it well. But i never see you strafe a single time in this video. I assume the game does have the function otherwise i don't see how it would be playable.
You can strafe. This is just how I play as strafing can be a bit laggy on camera due to frame rate
Strafing was a luxury at the time, most people didn't even bother. Remember, we played Doom and Wolf3D with the arrow keys on the keyboard, CTRL and Space to shoot and open doors.
game looks cool but lets be honest it was released when doom and doom 2 already existed which had far more advanced pseudo 3d engine
Yes but it was doing something wholly unique and diff narrative and gameplay wise
I will deff play original though now ita 9n the download as i speak thanks
It’s worth playing for sure
Mine’s Half-Life.
A hall of fame level game for sure
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah I mean it’s not an uncommon pick. But I just loved it from the opening scene. Half-Life Alyx is on another level though.
It’ really just is that good
Also the unreleased now released ps1 version lol
Yep :) sadly it’s prone to crashing
@@VideoGameEsotericawould be great if someone figured it out enough to patch it. I hope someone reverse engineers the code
Me too. I have never finished that version as it just crashes too often
@@VideoGameEsoterica strange on my pal mod chipped ps1 it dont seem to crash only played 30 mins was not one problem..
I’ll have to give it another shot
