A quick note: for this video, I attempted to automate things with the Patreon text scroll by using the patron list export function so I could copy past names, but unfortunately sorting this is... not very easy, and I ended up missing some names. This includes 'Vaporwave Vibes' as well as 'irre' - I'm very sorry for that to both of you! If your name is missing, please note that I didn't forget about you, and for future videos I'll be going back to adding names by hand rather than relying on the list. It's entirely my mistake that this happened.
I was just thinking, the closest thing to itch io that i can remember in the 90s, would be Newgrounds and Albano blacksheep. I used to spend a LOT of time on those sites because i wanted to see even *more* experimental stuff than what we already had. Also i did eventually get a 3DO, and a Philips CD-i... but that was around 2003 - 04. I went through sort of a binge buying phase with ebay and video game collecting was an interest of mine. You could get certain things at their cheapest around that time. My main interest though, which people did not understand. At all. Was that i liked experimental stuff with video games. And there's a lot that came out of that too, yet they never give credit where it's deserved. Otherwise things do get old. This is how you keep things interesting.
Thanks for the reminder of how powerful the internet has been in enabling a sort of doujin-ification of independent art, providing a platform on which people can publish and encounter works completely outside any kind of gatekeeping of creativity whatsoever (for better or worse). People who have no living memory of a pre-Web 2.0 world don't realize how utterly gatekept any sort of artistic expression used to be for the average person. Unless you were cool enough to be in on a zine scene, an early web adopter, or a Japanese creator within commuting range of Tokyo Big Sight, your ability to access outsider art was almost nonexistent.
I grew up and ... still live in Japan and if you go to any old game store/recycle shop/whatever you always end up seeing a buttload of weird games that never made it anywhere else. weirdest of all to youthful me was the fact that they were for consoles I'd -never even heard of- which is pretty cool english language internet usually has no visibility of this stuff and japanese internet may as well be 1995 so a lot of these games remain mysterious and "invisible" as far as the internet is concerned
If there's something I love it's failed or obscure consoles being a breeding ground platform for creatives and artists. The 3DO really was ahead of its time wanting to just be this multimedia field of creativity and experimentation. Also nice shouting out Echo. Guess I appreciate being one of the well known examples of English VNs because I myself am a furry so seeing stuff from my community getting some love makes me feel happy.
My youtube algorithm is pushing these 3DO retrospectives to me lately and I couldn't be happier. It's great to see more long-form content on a nearly forgotten system like this and with special attention paid to its relevance in current-day retro and indie gaming. 10/10
God I wish more people talked about the bizarre world of Japan only 3do titles. Just probably the most overlooked library of Japanese oddities. BTW, you ever thought about covering Madou Monogatari and its more more popular and well known Puyo Puyo and the world of its weird lore and the Discstation spin offs? Just stuff like a GBC tactical rpg taking place in the far future of the Puyo world, an educational VN featuring the cast of Puyo Puyo in feudal Japan, the planned Madou 0 that was set to star the protaganist Arle as a fetus and the Shin Madou timeline that's been a source debate in the western fandom due to the language barrier and the likes. And that's just a few examples.
Damn another great video the 3do is amazing and is super unique. Most people just watch the avgn video and mark the 3do up as a laughing stock when in reality it was super ahead of the time and is home to unique games that we really don't get anymore.
Glad to see the 3DO get more love and interest in the past few years than it has ever had. As someone who owned one only to have as a glorified SF2 machine (let’s be real, most of us who ever bought one used was for this reason) I lament never getting to explore more of its library. To see how much got locked away from us was crazy, hopefully we get to see this platform in FPGA sooner than later!
I'd never even heard of the 3DO before this video so I'm really glad you made it! As an artist, it can get pretty discouraging creating sometimes but people like you truly inspire me to keep going. Thank you again for all the work you put into these videos, your channel is something special!
I LOVE Princess Maker 2! I never got good at the game, but getting to and beating both the fighting tournament and the War God by myself(with a Guide)was an amazing experience.
Amazing video! Definitely took me back to years past on YT watching hours of obscure retro gaming content. It makes me so happy to still be learning about new and inspiring corners of gaming, thank you!
I'm glad the algorithm had your videos pop up on my feed, I'm really enjoying going through them. Never did I expect Echo to get a shout out in a video haha, that was a fun little surprise. Thank you for your work, I appreciate the shout outs you do in these videos too, helps me discover even more channels to look at and enjoy
I love the video, the topic and all the cozyness of reviewing old and charming machines and games BUT (or rather, and) Dohna Dohna jumpscare got me hard Edit: I just noticed how bas this sounds 3 seconds after posting it.
I just discovered you from this video a couple days ago and i've been binging your videos all day everyday, I feel so lucky to discover someone who is so passionate about PC98 games and older eroge, theyre something that im very passionate about and i try to play any english ones i can find and deeply wish i could play the untranslated ones. watching your videos scratches that deep itch to learn about the games i cant play and i love your personality and your tastes!! I'm really happy to have discovered you
Multimedia cruising looks like it's the opposite of the lain ps1 game, where they're both multimedia about burgeoning technology and how people interact with it but take the concept in VERY different directions, them being on their respective consoles just adds to how different they are. I was surprised when you talked about english vns that you didn't bring up soundless which has a ton of denpa inspiration, when I was in middle school and didn't know as much japanese I was looking at denpa games like spongebob looked at that glass of water and soundless was the closest I could get to an early 00's denpa. Also I saw full metal box and yami no koe and I am very on board with more black cyc content.
When majong went full epic multimedia saga i cracked. This was a really interesting take on the 3do, really cool video, makes me wanna know japanese to see all the stuff i missed from many home and portable consoles.
i'm stil going thru the video but i just want to let you know you made my day with the knowledge of you covering slow damage someday, it's honestly one of my favourite visual novels from n+c!!! and i'm excited for that day when you do cover it :D i've been wanting people to talk more about it and i just discovered your channel not too long ago and i love your content a bunch!! edit: it's interesting to hear about the 3DO, never heard about it but it's such a treat to just hear about what came of it with all its allowance of creativity and multimedia abilities. thanks for the video!
Your videos are always such a banger to watch. I actually started watching this one with my dad and he recognized some of the games you showcased for the Macintosh from back in the day since he had those games on his PC. Don't know if he still would since he likes to preserve old things but it def brought us both some joy to listen about the 3DO.
My partner showed me this video, they're a huge lover of old-school VNs and your channel and now so am I! Your music sounded very familiar to me so I searched up your Soundcloud and I realized, oh my god, this is an old chiptune friend??? If you're who I'm thinking of anyway. I used to go by a bunch of different names, to this day I can never decide on one I like haha, but I think I was MistSomething at the time we knew each other? If this is who I think it is I just wanted to say hi and that it's really great to see that you're happy and doing well!!!
I love how the passion you talk about the devs having is echoed not just in your voice but in your enthusiastic attention to detail about the subject matter. This is an excellent video.
Excellent video as always. I can always rely on my curiosity about 90s curios to be satisfied here. Long may creators make short, weird, experimental games.
Hearing the name Princess Maker immediately reminds me of its spiritual successor in Trillion: God of Destruction. Also, this is a bit of a stretch, but you showed them in the intro for like a second or two and that gives me justification to talk about the beauty that is Human Entertainment. I absolutely love them. They have off-kilter stuff like SOS and the first Clock Tower and just did whatever they wanted. Suda 51 was a part of it, and some staff went on to create Nude Maker, which had some stuff like Steel Battalion and Infinite Space.
Overblood is worth the time spent, me and a couple buddies threw it on for a laugh one time and ended up really enjoying it, it fits into an evening or two if you're ever looking for something. Some of the game over animations are super funny and we all fell in love with the sidekick character, Pipo.
If you fancy more Overblood then the sequel is absolutely wild. It's probably one of the most ambitious PS1 games ever made. I won't spoil it but it builds upon the first game and makes it into a kind of third person immersive sim along the lines of Deus Ex with a whole lot of FFVII thrown in that encourages the player to come up with wacky solutions to explore the environments rather than being expected to complete a linear chain of item puzzles and combat encounters. The voice acting is equally amusing, though for the localisation they decided to give everyone British accents, including Ras who has become Scottish since escaping the laboratory from the first game and has opened a bar/pub.
Your channel and this video randomly popped up in my reccomended side bar, probably because I've been watching AVGN and Stop Skeletons From Fighting recently. Your writing is excellent, you seem like a very nice person, and the topics you cover are totally my jam. Keep up the good work, I'm definitely subscribing!
I think the 3DO was the CDi, but done right. What’s interesting is that we were very close to getting an upgrade in the form of the 3DO M2, which was better than the N64, but would be crapped on by the Dreamcast.
this is the first video ive seen from u just from searching 3DO out of curiosity,, immediate sub!!!! so interesting and the ending message gave me chills :') gonna binge watch ur other vids RN!!!!
Oh good, someone finally talked about my favorite thing about the 3DO. It was a system that ANYONE could make a game for. There were no limits. The games you covered here are actually MY favorites too!
Superb video! Really enjoy this kind of coverage of something like the 3do. Also, i was watching this while playing trails to azure and got very concerned at the music from zero playing when it did lol
I love how older consoles had some truly niche and bizzare titles. But this? This is on another level, and I LOVE it! Absolutely fascinating. Ps: fist time here, instant sub. ❤
A well put together video! It was awesome to see all your effort into showing the hidden gems for the 3DO that came from outside of the U.S. 👍 I bought my FZ-1 from the AT&T store back in 1993 (and still have it too!)
Possibly trying out SMT, you say... Also, having watched a retrospective of 3DO RPGs recently, this is a nice supplement to it. (Also, Doctor Hauser has me interested, even if it feels a lot like a slideshow)
To add to her commet at @4:10 Actually what something to that list of systems that were similar, would be the Commodore Amiga. That was seriously super innovative for it's time and set up from the begining as creator/artists/musician's dream machine. So many of what it did revolutionized what become industry standards and/or would be firsts for industry in terms of creativity/software. Amazing best in-class music & video creation (video toaster!) and the game library was no slouch either. Huge assortment of games of all sorts, some which eventually come out for other platforms and types came out for it. It's just sad that it just didn't make it big anywhere else than Europe. We kinda missed out on the "micro's" craze that engulfed Europe at the time, and unfortunately a lot of the innovation, freedom and creativity it brought with it. So much software and games would be made by single person or a very small company. It's still so engrossing and interesting to learn about, especially from my prospective being completely new to it all so many years later. It's like finding a whole new world that I completely would've missed out on. Definitely an interesting subject worthy of it's own video(s) and something I'd love to hear your opinion on!
Damn, Life Stage looks pretty awesome actually? It has a certain charme that gets only tarnished by the framerate. Other than that it has pretty awesome and realistic looking models and textures for that time. Great video overall! Dr. Howser is just *chefskiss*
Great video. I’ve never heard much of 3DO stuff in Japan, so this is insightful for me. Also, enjoyed the hours of conversation we had after I translated that section for the video~
incredible video it was fun trying to find this video again and then being completely confused as to why i didnt just finish thisi n one go like i usually do with immensely enjoyable videos
I'd love to see a video about Kenji Eno specifically. He was one of the most brilliantly weird and experimental game designers of this era, there's so much interesting and mysterious little details surrounding his carrer, it's really fascinating. Your channel is awesome! 💚
This early multimedia CD era always fascinated me. Usually it was more PC, Sega CD stuff, and the occasional Saturn game, but I can't believe I've never heard of these things!
Recently got into 3DO Emulation, mainly due to remembering the original NFS and then trying out the version of Wing Commander on it. Really made me start to appreciate the 3DO in a way I did not expect.
Subscribed. I hope you'll read my comment. If you love the 3DO and several oddities that rivels 3DO in a weird modern way, Ouya is the way to go. I'm with a community of people dedicated to keep the servers and system preserved and alive. You can play those games for free today and when I say the library is slept on, I mean it. There are so many strange oddities on the Ouya that honestly bring alot to be desired. I think you'd like it and I'd heavily recommend it in 2023. Let me know if you want the discord.
So I'm only a super casual gamer and I know nothing about how these things work, but I feel like the PS1's LSD Dream Emulator would fit with the general vibes the 3DO has -- specifically in Japan. It seems out of place on the PS1 and I think it would work better alongside some of these. Granted, LSD DE didn't release until 1998, and for all I know the 3DO wouldn't have been able to run it, but hey. Maybe in a parallel world it's a 3DO game.
20:55 Solatorobo is one of my favourite games as well! (Also, thank you for making this video, I've always found the Japan only side of the 3DO's library really interesting, and its a shame that it doesn't get talked about all that much)
i love this channel, you'll be talking about some japanese game or console or what have you and then suddenly you'll talk about an old boomer shooter or how you make music. thanks for your unique videos on some of this stuff. i would've never known about the 3DO and how big of a deal it could've been otherwise and it'd forever be known to me as "lol, that one failed console that sucked"
A quick note: for this video, I attempted to automate things with the Patreon text scroll by using the patron list export function so I could copy past names, but unfortunately sorting this is... not very easy, and I ended up missing some names. At least you take the time and acknowledge your mistakes, then try to correct them... Your awesome for that.
I was just thinking, the closest thing to itch io that i can remember in the 90s, would be Newgrounds and Albano blacksheep. great stuff!

Seeing Echo mentioned in one of your videos is really cool to see given how much you cover horror VNs.
Omg this is my video it was made for me!!!
Nah, made for me. I owned a 3do IN Japan at this time.
@@ciscornBIG Plot twist, it was made for both of you.
Is this a Junji Ito reference
Not even browsing random RUclips videos can I run away from Echo. I truly am running in circles.
My youtube algorithm is pushing these 3DO retrospectives to me lately and I couldn't be happier. It's great to see more long-form content on a nearly forgotten system like this and with special attention paid to its relevance in current-day retro and indie gaming. 10/10

this video hits all my weird niche interests, thank you
Yooo the new neptunia girl in the humb lets gooo
First time watching your vids on this Channel, now I'm subbed... Thanks to the RUclips algorithm.
I'd never even heard of the 3DO before this video so I'm really glad you made it! As an artist, it can get pretty discouraging creating sometimes but people like you truly inspire me to keep going. Thank you again for all the work you put into these videos, your channel is something special!
amazing video as always
I LOVE Princess Maker 2! I never got good at the game, but getting to and beating both the fighting tournament and the War God by myself(with a Guide)was an amazing experience.
Aaaah I'm so glad you showcased so many cool and underrated 3DO titles ! It was a joy to watch. ; w ;
...you two should collaborate sometime >.>
the youtube recommendations have been fantabulous lately ! ah i'm glad i found this channel this is really damn cool
this video ROCKS!! i think about this video alot
>Alice
>occasional Blue Archive BGM
nice
Amazing video! Definitely took me back to years past on YT watching hours of obscure retro gaming content. It makes me so happy to still be learning about new and inspiring corners of gaming, thank you!
For some reason I'm really in love with the 3DO logo which makes me appreciate the console probably more than it deserves
GURL! I STARTED SCREAMING OUT OF JOY WHEN YOU SAID YOU WANT TO MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT SLOW DAMAGE! I'M SO HYPED FOR THAT!!!!
The 3DO walked so that the PlayStation could run.
This video has an incredible crunchiness to it that I adore, especially while floating around early-internet cyberspace, my dream.
I saw a 3DO at a thrift store a year ago, and every time I hear about the 3DO now, I kick myself to hell. 😔
I love the video, the topic and all the cozyness of reviewing old and charming machines and games BUT (or rather, and)
Dohna Dohna jumpscare got me hard
Edit: I just noticed how bas this sounds 3 seconds after posting it.
I'm really happy to have discovered you
I really like the selection of games you showcased in this video. There is a cool artsy feel to them.
I love the archive of unusual pieces of art I will never get to experience. Thank you.
When majong went full epic multimedia saga i cracked. This was a really interesting take on the 3do, really cool video, makes me wanna know japanese to see all the stuff i missed from many home and portable consoles.
i'm stil going thru the video but i just want to let you know you made my day with the knowledge of you covering slow damage someday, it's honestly one of my favourite visual novels from n+c!!! and i'm excited for that day when you do cover it :D
i've been wanting people to talk more about it and i just discovered your channel not too long ago and i love your content a bunch!!
edit: it's interesting to hear about the 3DO, never heard about it but it's such a treat to just hear about what came of it with all its allowance of creativity and multimedia abilities. thanks for the video!
Thanks for this work! I'm a 3DO nerd and hardware enthusiast and enjoyed your perspective!
OH MY GOD I REMEMBER YOU, IM SO HAPPY TO HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN!!!
I love how the passion you talk about the devs having is echoed not just in your voice but in your enthusiastic attention to detail about the subject matter. This is an excellent video.
I'm glad someone talked about 3DO in a positive way. An underrated console (more of a platform).
Excellent video as always. I can always rely on my curiosity about 90s curios to be satisfied here. Long may creators make short, weird, experimental games.
Correction: 3do sold close to or more than 2.5 million worldwide
PIIIIPPPOOOOO!!!
Really fascinating! Thankyou for transporting and guiding us through this wondrously niche corner of the gaming world!
first time watching the channel, love the theme but the production and narration is just very very good, thanks for the video!
So glad the system is getting some love, I knew there was more to it than meets the eye!
I think the 3DO was the CDi, but done right. What’s interesting is that we were very close to getting an upgrade in the form of the 3DO M2, which was better than the N64, but would be crapped on by the Dreamcast.

god many of the games on this look SO fucking cool, thank you for reviewing and talking about them!!
A well put together video! It was awesome to see all your effort into showing the hidden gems for the 3DO that came from outside of the U.S. 👍
I bought my FZ-1 from the AT&T store back in 1993 (and still have it too!)
I wish I knew about this platform back in the day. These are the kind of games I enjoy discovering especially back then at the time
The 3DO is a bit of a treasure trove of obscure oddities, and you've done a great job of highlighting many of them.
OUTTA NOWHERE AMELIE DOREE PUTTING OUT A VIDEO ON THE 3DO???
Can't wait for you to cover slow damage! This game is loaded with social commentry. it's really one of my favourite vns
Amelie...I just gotta say the sheer insanity that is that thumbnail dragged me straight here lol.
Possibly trying out SMT, you say...
Also, having watched a retrospective of 3DO RPGs recently, this is a nice supplement to it. (Also, Doctor Hauser has me interested, even if it feels a lot like a slideshow)
i am absolutely integrating "fun for the whole polycule" into my lexicon
This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I love your style. Can't wait to watch some more with my friends!

HOLY SHIT IT'S THE GEX MACHINE!
(I missed scoot the woz)
I love the adorable art and style of Tail Concerto, so I gotta check out Solatorobo!
Net Yaroze for the PS1 had a similar vibe, it was a dev kit for hobbyists
N.O.B and Dragon Tycoon Edge are two of the most beautiful games I've seen in a lobg time. Thank you for showing them. I needed that.
I've been playing 3DO the past week nice
Thanks you can't wait for the your next video
incredible video
it was fun trying to find this video again and then being completely confused as to why i didnt just finish thisi n one go like i usually do with immensely enjoyable videos
Love hearing about super obscure games, great video!
Let's 3DOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
...
* takes breath *
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Your channel is really underrated. Im gonna toss you the 5$ that we all pass around.
Recently got into 3DO Emulation, mainly due to remembering the original NFS and then trying out the version of Wing Commander on it.
Really made me start to appreciate the 3DO in a way I did not expect.
There's a lot of really good game recommendations in here! I love it.
This is a cool ass video, definitely keeping an eye on your channel.
Oi, new Amelie Doree video is out!
I'm no good at writing eloquent or witty comments so I'm just gonna say I really really really liked this video!
I've felt for a while now that 3DO would have worked better as a computer.
strange actually seeing someone having something positive to say about the 3do usually you only hear about its failures, interesting video
So many snes games that never came here and don’t get me started on the pc engine
babe wake up another hourlong video about japanese 3DO indies
So I'm only a super casual gamer and I know nothing about how these things work, but I feel like the PS1's LSD Dream Emulator would fit with the general vibes the 3DO has -- specifically in Japan. It seems out of place on the PS1 and I think it would work better alongside some of these. Granted, LSD DE didn't release until 1998, and for all I know the 3DO wouldn't have been able to run it, but hey. Maybe in a parallel world it's a 3DO game.
20:55 Solatorobo is one of my favourite games as well!
(Also, thank you for making this video, I've always found the Japan only side of the 3DO's library really interesting, and its a shame that it doesn't get talked about all that much)
WAKE UP BABE NOELLE JUST DROPPED THE 3DO VID
Thank you so much for this video. I learned a lot! Very surprising to see that the 3DO had a certain degree of success in Japan.
Love your videos!!
Never seen a video covering this aspect of the 3DO in all my years watching gaming content, I subbed
This is a very good video; both the subject matter and the style of writing heavily remind me of ThorHighHeels.
i love this channel, you'll be talking about some japanese game or console or what have you and then suddenly you'll talk about an old boomer shooter or how you make music. thanks for your unique videos on some of this stuff. i would've never known about the 3DO and how big of a deal it could've been otherwise and it'd forever be known to me as "lol, that one failed console that sucked"
If you talk about the Princess Maker series, you should talk about Petite Princess Yucie. It’s an anime adaptation of the games and it’s pretty cute!
my brain lit up way too much seeing Winning Post mentioned lol
