    Gene Rayburn is the MOST incredible game show host in the history of game shows. NOBODY has ever done the kinds of things Gene did. He was such a free spirit but yet he knew where to draw the line. This wasn't by accident. He had years of interacting with live audiences and it shows. Think oif the balls you have to juggle to do his job: The rules of the game, the pace of the show, commercials, Richard Dawson, camera angles, etc. He really knew how to chew gum and walk like a pro!

    I was surprised that no one said "hugging" in response to the question about the tree surgeon. Tree hugging became very popular among hippies in the 1960s and would have been well known by 1977,

    H/H match update and End-of-Week Recap:
    ...
    ~~~Today's Action:
    The game stumbles into a tie-breaker, but not before Gene climbs over the studio audience. Our challenger found four "Jock Straps" on the panel, but our champion isn't so fortunate with her question, drawing a blank. She is defeated after winning a single game and $600.
    *Today's audience match question: "Hans________"*
    (My thoughts: Brinker, Christian Andersen, Holbein)
    The celebs: Richard (Christian Andersen), Fannie (Brinker), Connie (-el and Gretel)
    The choice: Christian Andersen
    The answers: Brinker, Conried*, Christian Andersen
    *How did I forget Match Game alum (episodes 1036-1040) Hans Conried?
    No suspense today. We all know this champion ("Your cup overfloweth" - Gene Rayburn remarks to her) is going to pick Richard for the H/H.
    Stats: Richard has matched 115 of his 266 most recent attempts (43.2%), 54 of his last 126 attempts (42.9%), 35 of his last 82 attempts (42.7%), and 7 of his past 18 attempts (38.9%). His overall success rate is *42.1%* and this is his 744th attempt so far.
    For the sake of comparison: Orson has matched all 4 of his 4 attempts (100%), Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Fannie has matched 15 of her 31 attempts (48.4%), Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%), and Richard has matched 313 of his 743 attempts (42.1%). Connie Stevens has not yet answered a H/H question.
    *Today's H/H question: "Paris________"*
    (France has got to be the definitive answer. It's simple and basic. Something like "Paris in the Spring/time" is too much of a long shot. I can't even think of a decent alternative answer. I predict an easy match today.)
    Hmm. Even so, the contestant appears to be thinking pretty hard. Richard seems to come up with an idea quickly, but pauses, looking to Fannie as if for feedback. He shrugs and turns a card over as if to write, and the DING sounds, but Richard indicates he's not ready. He finishes and and files his card. A second DING.
    The champion offers the only reasonable answer I could think of: "France." Gene echoes my reasoning when he calls it "simple, direct." And the audience sounds pretty enthusiastic. I can sense the Goodson-Todman accounting team picking up their check-writing pen!
    Yes, it's unanimous, and Richard receives his much-desired second kiss from our new champion.
    Richard scores his 314th H/H match today.
    ~~~The Week that Was:
    After a surprising and entertaining head-to-head week last time (with three different celebs scoring matches!), we return to the cold, hard reality of another all-Richard H/H week. An audience match fail on "Tuesday" robbed us of one question, and, of course, Richard answered the four we did get. - This week's tally: Richard 2/4
    Recapping this week's panelists:
    *Richard* enjoyed another above-average week, matching two of four questions, with his overall matching average ending where it started, at 42.2%. As I've been saying for weeks on end, he's within striking distance of overtaking Brett in overall accuracy when it comes to the H/H, but will he ever strike?
    *Charles* sat idle this week (after scoring a match last week), holding at an excellent 48.6% accuracy.
    *Brett* was idle for her sixth consecutive week, and so her accuracy score remains a very good 42.3%.
    *Fannie* Flagg finished her 69th week of 90, but didn't get an opportunity to expand on her H/H stats this week (after two plays last week). Her track record holds at an excellent 48.4%.
    *Orson* Bean completed his 15th week of 16. Sadly, we won't see him again until the show's next-to-last week. And, sadly, he didn't get another shot at a H/H question this week. He holds at four matches out of four attempts. Depending on the vagaries of the "Star Wheel" on his final week, he may well retire with that perfect, albeit modest, record intact.
    *Connie* Stevens completed her first week on the Match Game '7x panel. She will have two more weeks in which to (possibly) tackle her first H/H question.
    ~~~Looking ahead, our stalwart regulars will be joined by two very familiar MG family members and another new one-and-done guest panelist:
    -----Semi-regular Marcia Wallace returns for her 9th week (of 18). Marcia last joined the panel for episodes 1066 to 1070. She also answered her first H/H question in episode 1070, but didn't achieve a match. I'm rooting for her to finally score that first match this coming week!
    -----Lee Meriwether will be back for her 10th week of 12 total. Lee last graced the panel in episodes 1056-1060, and, like Marcia, Lee has been chosen for the H/H only once, without matching. Lee also merits another shot at scoring her first match - I hope she gets it next week.
    -----Last but not least, David Landsberg will add his name to the ever-growing list of celebs joining the "Match Game '7x" panel for one week only.
    ~~~And here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.)
    (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts).
    Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts).
    Charles - 48.6% (34 wins in 70 attempts).
    Fannie - 48.4% (15 wins in 31 attempts).
    Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts).
    Richard - 42.2% (314 wins in 744 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1105, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
