British Guy visits The Tenderloin, San Francisco - is it as bad as they say? 🇺🇸

- The Tenderloin is notorious for crime, prostitution, dug dealing and taking, homelessness and gang warfare - all out on the streets.
I, an introverted British guy, decide to take a stroll the neighbourhood with my camera in hand. What's the worst that could happen?
#sanfranciscototierradelfuego
Hi Matt, so ratios USA to UK population, USA is 5 or 6 times bigger,as you said with the stats, wasn't too bad, think east Croydon is worse. Take care mate
East Croydon is worse than everywhere 😆
The only reason why you didn't see the REALLY bad stuff, is because you were walking mostly on the outskirts of the Tenderloin, close to Market street, and didn't venture inside the center of the mess. You should have walked up Leavenworth, from Golden Gate Avenue all the way up to Geary street, or even Ellis street... Human feces and needles are still everywhere. That's where all the horror is... Nothing really changed. It's nasty here.
Maybe next time I'm in town I'll check those areas out (or maybe not...)
Great video friend... Be safe out there Matt, especially walking around with your camera... 💖💖💖
Crazy facts and statements but yeah we walked through the Tenderloin too, it was a little sketchy in places but I’d say that was the case for most of the city. Certainly felt a LOT safer there than I would in most of London. There’s always that feeling of being eyed up as a target but id say that’s way more pronounced n London. Yeah we visited in the day too, I guess it could be extremely different at night.. 👍
Really, I've never had an issue walking around London even in places like Brixton and Peckham. Certainly felt safer there than in the Tenderloin myself. And they're much less likely to have guns in London 😆
@@no_soy_rubioto be fair it was the wee hours of a Saturday night into Sunday morning and I felt like I was being stalked on my last visit!
@@GENerationXplorers tbf I did get stalked when I lived there over 20 years ago 🤣
Thank you for sharing. Pleased to see there has been a great improvement compared to before.
Thanks Catherine!
The Loin isn’t so bad honestly….its our Skidrow
That...doesn't make it sound any better 😅
As an SF resident, the tenderloin and downtown has cleaned up a lot over the past couple years. Back in 2021, it legitimately was as bad as the media portrays it to, but since then the media and outsiders have been riding that train and continuously bashing SF as a whole because of the state that one neighborhood was in a few years back. Good to see an outsider coming to check it out and seeing it for themselves. Its still SF's most screwed up and dangerous neighborhood, but as you saw in the video, its not NEARLY as bad as the media makes it out to be. Also, when you visited Union Square, that was not considered to be part of the Tenderloin. Union Square is its own district and is significantly better than the Tenderloin itself.
Glad to hear things are getting better!
Visited SF about 20 years ago and was warned against going to Tenderloin. So we stayed away from it. I think it was wise advice.
Agreed!
You gotta find something better than that to keep me watching.
Next video is completely different!
Be careful , Rubio ! Sei vorsichtig !
Lucky you, you could send me to tears of joy. I`m so happy for you.I hope you are having fun
Please stay careful at the tenderloin, there are some characters there you don`t want to get too close to.
Sadly it is reflection of any inner city across the globe. Thanks for showing us around Matt. Stay safe.
Thanks Chris 😁
@@no_soy_rubioWELCOME TO AMERICA 🇺🇸😃
@@no_soy_rubiohere in America we are known as gun loving American 😃
@@no_soy_rubionighttime at the tenderloin can get really bad
@stevenjohnson8736 yeah I wasn't gonna risk it at night time lol the mission district was bad enough
Great video Matt, there are some things bad but not all is bad. Take care my friend, those are dangerous streets, and there are many people with some behavioral problems😀🙋🏽♂️
Thanks Sergio mate 😁
Looks cleaner than London.
Really, which part?
That pretty much matches our impressions of the Tenderloin. We stayed here (Travelodge - now closed) as it was a cheaper option and there were three of us either fairly confident or perhaps blissfully unawares. There are obviously people around whose lives are more chaotic than most and who need more help to improve their lot. The reputation of the area may be a little exaggerated in relation to other places around the States that we would most definitely not wander. Last time here there was a really colourful farmers market on the plaza across from City Hall. There were a few homeless as we wandered down Market Street but no more than we see in many UK cities. I understand that this area is now a National Historic District. It was in the days before digital photography and so I was saving my slide film for more attractive areas. Interesting to see your take as always. BTW the Cheesecake Factory on Union Square has an outdoor area offering views from high up over the square.
Hi Ivor, there was a farmer's market the day I visited too, in the same location! I completely agree, people do need help to improve their lives. I wouldn't like to see the even worse areas that you've mentioned! Hope you're well, just catching up some of your French escapades now.
Very cool to see you in America too 🥳 very nice pictures and impressions 👍🎥 come well into the new week my friend 👏👏👏👏🎥❤🙋♂
Thanks man 🎸🤘
Stay safe, bro...keep up the interesting videos...
Thank you!
When I visited San Francisco in 2015 the square in front of city hall was full of homeless people. Every where I went I was shocked by the squalor. It actually looks like it has improved since then.
Compared to some of the videos I've seen it definitely looks better!
Working people and city government have lost their patience with the homeless. For years they held on to this idea that everyone will prosper if you just give them the help they need, but that's a complete lie. Most of the homeless have zero intention of ever becoming self-sufficient. All offering them help does is increase their numbers...California's generous aid to the homeless has worked like a magnet for homeless from all across the country.
Are you going to eventually head towards where they filmed Rocky In Philadelphia on your travels?
No I'm heading south mate, USA is too expensive to travel in long-term
Very interesting video, thanks for sharing content of areas off the beaten track! Safe travels mate
Thanks mate 🙏
A rather unique name for a neighbourhood! I agree with you though, it didn't seem too bad compared to other "sketchy" neighbourhoods I've seen photos of in America. But like you said, I suspect it would be worse at night.
Yeah I felt LA was sketchier, but maybe they've cleaned that up too. I'll find out in a couple of weeks!
Great sharing my friend 🙏👍🦋💐
Thank you for sharing interesting travel videos on the streets of San Francisco.. Have a nice day👍
Wow, 3 videos in a week! 😂 you’re on a roll. Keep safe dude.
Thanks man, 3 short ones, probably could've put them all in one tbh 😆
I thought it was worse...
👍 I admire Your bravery 😎 I would afraid to visit this place 🥰🥰🥰🥰
interesting and honest insight into San Francisco mate
*💯full view☑Au🦘like👍😎*
I’ll stick to the beef version 🤔🍄
Yeah I think I remember seeing part of this as I stayed at a hostel near there
Grew up in S.F. And it’s no where what it used to be ,but the same can be said about most urban cities. Too many people
Too many of the wrong people I'd say!
Hi Matt! There were some lovely areas close by Tenderloin. Bullet cases on the street? OMG!!😱Glad you made it through safely. Take care ❤
Thank you 😁
Interesting to see the Tenderloin seen worse but as you say probably best avoided in the dark
All the best Matt
Simon 👍
Cheers Simon!
Thank you for sharing : Like 105 for you :) I wish you a wonderful weekend
Just don’t stay for too long, be careful who you talk to, be careful who try to grab you. Some of my friends got glass bottles thrown at them. I saw a Homeless Lady Beating a Random Guy with her Broom as he passed by.
Pleased the worst that happened to me was being called a stupid mf 😅
@@no_soy_rubio yeah I went to college out there and literally barely made it out alive.
Looks rough there. Reminds me of some places I've been through in my life, just sad. Be safe my friend!
Thank you! I didn't spend too long there, didn't wanna push my luck 😆
@no_soy_rubio I don't blame you! Glad you're safe 😄
Take care always ❤
I love going to those kind of places when I’m travelling, to get to see the Real reality of each place! Well done Matt! 🍺🍺
Cheers Bip 😁 I like seeing where the real people live 👌
Drove through there on accident on Saturday. Saw people smoking off tinfoil and shooting up out on the sidewalk at 3pm. I was shocked!!
Crazy isn't it, people are so brazen
mi like desde este canal tambien amigo
Matt, que lamentable mucha gente en situación de calle como acá en BsAs,🤦🏻♀️😢
Si es una lastima como viven, la gente necesita ayuda
es un hermos lugar que nos regalas aqui amigo
Never been there, and I don’t want to go there, but I appreciate your video. Nice job 👍
No waterfalls here, I'd give it a miss
Thanks, mate. At least its looking better than skid row.
Hmmm I'm on the fence with that one 😆
Very nice video 👌,my friend!!!! thanks for sharing!!!😊
Whats your overall view of sanfransico is the underbelly that bad

@@no_soy_rubio have you visited the skyscraper district of sanfrancisco is it true a lot of bussiness have shut down in downtown sanfrancisco
@gerarddeegan1164 yeah seems like a few have but it's not as bad as a lot of places in the UK for example. Loads more homeless and junkies in the street though
Enjoying these videos Matt. Thanks for posting. You are cute too 😊😊
Thank you 🙈
hola amigo aqui ando en tu video
disfrutando por donde tu estas
Muito cuidado por aí 😘
Interesting ❤❤❤😊
If that’s bad then the Medway towns are apocalyptic
Why is it called the tenderloin rember bullet cases the public in the united states are allowed to carry guns😮 which is a shocking thing in the american institution😮
Been to San Francisco so many times (cause I live less than 2 hours away from it without traffic) but I don't think I ever visited tenderloin...the only big city I've seen poops on the street is Lisbon near a train station
Wow, really! I saw quite a few shady characters in Lisbon (most of them offered me drugs) but never saw any of what you mentioned, thankfully!
cool looking building, the reports of the area sound absolutely horrendous... corroded by urine omg! Its cool to see this place through your eyes. Definitely a few people looking crazy. nice turd there feck. Its awful, in this day and age no one should be on the streets :/
Yeah it was pretty grim 😬
😂😂😂 Turds 1 😂 😂😂
If you had to stay in California long enough you will experience lots of firsts and will leave you traumatized. Be very careful my friend! Be very careful/ You seem like a good hearted mate
I'm in California for about 2 more weeks then off to Mexico
@@no_soy_rubio good for you! Stay safe
Good morning my friend ❤
I was just thinking it's not as bad as its reputation by the look of it... then you turned a corner and it nose dived. Still better than it could be I suppose.
Better than it used to be I've been told!
Hey man found this video randomly. Majority of the video you were not in the tenderloin, you were out the outer most technical area of the tenderloin basically where it starts and ends. you were on market street and city hall area for most of it which is dingy, but not the real depth of it. From larkin to taylor st, and Post to McAllister is the TL. you dont really show any of this in the video. Also you didnt see 6th street either in SOMA, which isnt even TL but is as bad. Just saying. Id walk at least the majority of the blocks in the neighborhood before concluding anything. If you spend 1 hour and walk most the blocks you will see countless syringes and lots of pipes and, people either dying or OD'ing in broad daylight. Cant say ive ever seen bullet casings though
Ahhh cool, good to know. I was following Google maps and the area they deemed to be the Tenderloin. I came through that area again a few days later on the bus and saw people just passing around pipes and smoking in broad daylight in front of families. Awful.
oh god I lived in SF in 89 that area was always a shit hole
Didn't know it had been bad for that long!
Stay safe buddy
So many homeless people and drug addicts. Disgusting
que bonito dejas aqui
son geniales
There are way too many outsiders making videos about the rough spots in SF. Why? What is their motive? Why is it so important to constantly show the bad side of our town?
For some reason these videos aren’t often about the poverty in Appalachia or other conservative hellholes. 🤔
I made plenty of other videos on San Francisco/Bay Area too, for whatever reason RUclips promotes these and you clicked on it 🤷🏻♂️
@@no_soy_rubio I just clicked for the pretty face. ✌🏼
@@Katnip452 I'm flattered 😅
I had no idea city hall there was so beautiful. It’s hard to believe that someone would drop a turd right in the middle of the sidewalk. At least lean up against something. How was the club after dark? 😂 Honestly, I’d stay away from anything and everything in San Francisco. At least you are getting some good footage and enjoying yourself. 👍
Some areas are great, like the Golden Gate Park, but a lot of it is worth avoiding (except the club after dark 😆)
London's a lot better, right?
It's hard to say which is better or worse but you certainly don't see people in the middle of London openly dealing and smoking crack
🙂🙂🙂🙂
Nice vdo
Cheers unc
It looks pretty much the same when I was a teen in the 80s! 😂
During the crack epidemic I'm guessing
Awesome video 👍
