In SF, predatory capitalism has consumed all the available prey. San Francisco's problems result NOT from an excess of socialism, but from an excess of CAPITALISM. I hate how people blame progressive politics on the issues in sf. Of course the city has been mismanaged but the core issue is nimbyism which is an apolitical topic. Not building enough housing got sf into this mess and the high cost living that resulted from low housing supply caused cost of living to surge. Tech workers became the main demographic the city tried to attract pushing out everyday people. When COVID hit and wfh happened they left because of said high cost of living. This is literally because they didn’t build enough housing and that’s not conservative or liberal that’s just bad governance.

My father grew up in SF.
He lived right on El Camino Del Mar, within a single block of where the Presidio starts. From his bedroom window, he looked down the shoreline of Baker Beach and could see the Golden Gate Bridge clearly. He attended the language school at the Presidio and could have walked home for lunch if that was allowed. He left for the military and then worked his whole life in the intelligence field.
He went back to visit friends and relatives in SF, many times since he graduated high school in the mid 1950s (from George Washington HS).
He said he started to notice major changes as far back as the 80s, but it wasn't until the late 2000s that the city really went to hell in a handbasket.
These days he wouldn't visit if you gave him free airfare.
It's too painful to see what the city has become.

This is insane. And heartbreaking. Heartbreakingly insane.
In '94, on a dare from friends, I shoplifted about $25-30 worth of shampoo and other small items from a grocery store. I was caught and arrested, then later had to go to court to pay ~$500 (~5 times the value of the stolen goods, plus court costs). I was 12. *Twelve* and society expected more from me than *GROWN MEN AND WOMEN* in SF, who can rob stores (and individuals) of up to *$1,000* and face absolutely no consequences. This isn't to say I want a greater presence of gov't police in everyone's business in San Francisco. But someone (preferably the people) needs to stand up and say "enough!" This video is what happens when no one expects anything more from people. There *has* to be a middle ground between too much of a police presence and complete apathy that foments lawlessness and the doom spiral of once-great cities.

Hey Leo, thank you for shining a light on S.F. with this great video!
I'm a born, bred, and raised California OG. I have lived in S.F. three separate times in my life. This city USED to be vibrant and fun...full of creative, compassionate, amazing people, venues, and artists. The entire city had a friendly community vibe. Sadly, the city was transformed by vagrant corporate employees and entrepreneurs (from elsewhere) who didn't have any connection (other than a paycheck) to this once thriving city.
The housing demand created by the influx of employees working in tech, made the city feel disjointed. Locals got evicted from their homes, rents skyrocketed, the homeless population increased off the charts, government policies that make mo sense were enforced, and crime increased at least 10 fold.
    It's a shame.
The 'starving artists' could no longer afford to live there. People who lived peacefully in S.F. could no longer afford to stay in the city.
The extremely unfriendly business taxes make running a small biz a pipe dream.
S.F. is currently a cesspool of filth and crime.
    It's sad.

What infuriates me is that the elitist politicians/rich people are not affected. They still can do whatever they want, go whereever they want, and have their kids go to private schools. They live behind close gated communities where there are no addicts, homeless, and criminals.

What they can't do is walk down Market St. and without feeling depressed.

Good day Mr. Leo! This is heartbreaking to see, I lived in SF for 4 years before I left to live out of state. I am here flr vacation and I thought things were gonna be the way they were but i guess not. Thank you for the raw video and taking us viewers around the street to see what has been going on. Have an awesome one

I used to work on market and also on Pine. The mall was open with full occupancy, Carl’s Jr. was still there, that donut shop was there, multiple coffee shops, chocolate shops, multiple nutrition stores, the workwear store was there, the army navy was still there, Quiznos, Walgreens, the gap, all within a couple blocks of one another. From what I understand they are almost all gone if not all gone. People should know that even 20 years ago most of these retail stores had a policy of not stopping shoplifters. But when the city Council and mayors decided to just stop prosecuting all crime, including drug, dealing, drug use, car, break-ins, and then anyone who was arrested gets let out immediately, things went completely to hell. Also, they will not arrest the drug dealers because all the drug dealers are illegal immigrants now and if they arrest them they have to deal with the problem of arresting an illegal immigrant which we know they don’t want to deal with. The last thing they will ever do is deport somebody or turn them over to immigration. All this scares all the tourists off that would patronize those businesses. Then the governor shuts the entire state down and tells everybody to stay home for two years and not work. People never return to that area for work so there goes another 50% of the foot traffic for those businesses. This was 100% caused by leftist policy and nothing else.

Also, it should be noted that within five or six blocks on the same side of market Street there was often two of the same store! There was two Carl’s Jr.. There was two GNC on the same side of market, and then another one a couple blocks away on Pine Street! Corporations were able to operate multiple store, fronts all in the same neighborhood and turn a profit. There would be a Benetton in the mall and then across the street from the mall there would be a Sisley, which was a Benetton owned brand. The world flagship gap location was right there on market. I believe where the cable car turnaround was. If you can’t get foot traffic in your store where the cable car turnaround is then there is no way a business can survive there.

Market street has been going down long before the pandemic. The city has reconfigured the street many times and basically eliminating all foot traffic and vehicles. They made room for empty electric buses and bicycle riders who are mostly nutcases.

Left and right are the same people. They are all poll-iticians. Only for the polls. You vote for them and they tax you as well. A lot of them live right there in San Francisco too. Keep voting sheep.

Just to qualify, this is a fairly emptied downtown. But the rest of the neighborhoods are populated with businesses and people who live there.
