I like your patience and how you go through all the steps without stopping the camera. That is very helpful because we could learn from you and your manners and trial and error method. your tone is very calming and that is what I want to hear when I need to go through such a detailed job. Thank you so much... you did such an excellent video.

Thank you, thank you. It's July 2019 and I still have an HP Pavilion that I still needed to repair. Your videos were a tremendous help with this. I feel for how painstaking the little screws are. Just wanted to let you know your videos are still worthwhile and very good.

KERSH mine has been clicking and rattling for the past few years. I just took it apart, same as yours, plugged right up. I'd rather buy RAM than a fan, but it can't hurt.

The two small "leftover" screws are actually from under the hard drive. You forgot to put them pack in before you replaced the hard drive at the end. 😉 Hope that helps with the "mystery" of the extra screws! Thanks by the way for your videos. They really helped me out a lot with cleaning my fan and replacing the thermal grease.

Cheers for uploading this. I just picked up a second hand HP Pavilion laptop from a friend. Thought I better check the fan before firing it up. Glad I did. It was full of crap. But thanks to your guide it is now clean as a whistle. Thanks.

I'm looking at this in 2020, and this is just as useful now as it was back in 2014. Was that your son who is so smart and suggested that it may not have power in the battery. He was right. His voice sounds like my son's did a couple of years ago. He is also very intuitive. Part one and two were great vids. It's good to see how swapping the fan out can be done on a laptop. Time and patience can save you money.

Thank you for these two videos! First time I ever disassembled a laptop! Cleaned and replaced the thermal paste also ... now works like new! Keep in mind, this first attempt was on this older model laptop ... best to practice on older gear, that way if something breaks, oh well...

Thank you Mr. Dave! I have went from rags to PC riches thanks to your tutorial. Three minors error I made : 1 - didn't plug the fan in fully - re-plugged it firm and it works perfectly. 2- putting LARGE screws in the back of the mother board - this blocked the battery from being flush - replaced with correct SMALL screws ( wondered why so many were left)- AOK . 3- After stripping it 2x , got careless removing said screws out and damaged the Power button ribbon cable slightly - can still " Hot wire" it by removing the keyboard > AC power takes over and everything runs fine - will take a closer look tomorrow but that is a $ 2 snap fix. The 2019 fan works much better than the original. The big thing you did for me Dave is destroy my fear of working on PCs.
I watched the vid 2 x , then paused as I went along with my repair and by Jove it works - maybe brudder didn't get all the mechi brains. Thanks again Dave - 2 Thumbs up.

Great video! Thanks for the step by step instructions, the hardest part for me was trying to track down the thermal heat sink compound, radio shack closed down where im from but was able to buy a small packet from a computer repair shop in town for $2. Total cost for the reppair was $11 (9 for the fan and 2 for the hs compound). Also one of the extra screws you have is the one holding in the motherboard. Just a fyi, Thanks again!

I just used this mega useful tutorial to strip my G6 to replace CPU fan, when all was dismantled I found my cheap Chinese replacement fan only had 3 wires to the OE 4 wires, so I lifted the blade off the OE motor, (It's only held by magnetism) cleaned the centre pin and oiled the bearing with 3 in 1 now it works perfectly. I found I had one 6.5mm screw too many and one 4mm too few, took the machine apart 3 times and could not find where I'd used the wrong one, so I just found the one place under the rear cover where the 6.5mm screw wouldn't foul anything and used it there.

I have a Question I was wondering if you could answer for me. I took my laptop apart just like you showed me and cleaned off the cpu and when I was cleaning off the heat sink I put a couple scratches in it because I used the metal screwdriver to scrap off the old compound off before I used the q-tip and rubbing alcohol. So my question is do you think it will be ok and still work properly? Even though there is a few scratches where the heat sink meets the cpu? Thanks and God Bless and Have a Great Day and hope to hear from you soon!.

  • @77curly

I too was able to get it apart and back together (and also had a couple of little screws left over). I powered it up and it worked - got to the Home Screen. I then shut it down and when it went to power it up again, I kept getting a message “Preparing Automatic Repair” and then it shut down. Any thoughts?

  • @wbrells

Great video! Didn't need to replace the fan, just the thermal paste that was all dried up. I used a pea-sized spot of Noctua NT-H1 thermal paste which seem to be highly rated. The CPU temperature (via Open Hardware Monitor) is now under 40C when the system is idling but can peak around 70C when the system is working hard. (BTW the shutdown temperature for the A6-4400M processor is 100C, so I guess I'm safe!)
The only problem to report is the last step - great difficulty replacing the plastic disk/memory cover plate. It just would not seat in proper position. I think the problem was partially related to the position of the black cable next to the snap-on connector near the hard disk cable. Positioning the problem cable to the side of the snap-on connector (instead of on top of it) seemed to help, but even after playing with it for AN HOUR the cover plate still isn't as flat as I'd like! Any thoughts?
BTW, I don't think the WiFi card and its connecting wires need to be disconnected. Saves a bit of work!

What I don't like about the HP Pavilion series is the fans virtually run all the time the computer is on. Other PCs have thermal fans which only operate when the CPU gets warm, then they power down during low-load operations, like working on a word document. The problem with this design is the fan unit collects a lot more dust causing the fan unit to fail regularly. It was only when my HP main board got a power surge that the tech replaced the old dying fan (which began to play up when the unit was 13 months old) and put in a thermal fan instead. It runs only when the CPU gets warm. I won't get another HP again! Too many problems with them.

suggestion , magnetize your screwdriver makes it much easier to remove tiny screws , work slowly with patience and note the position and size of each fastener removed with video or photos (there is often a symbol present for a fastener position as well in some cases) to reflect back upon on reassembly, view videos on youtube on what to use to clean old thermal compound and how to re-apply to the CPU/GPU (Processer in this laptop has built in Graphics hardware as well) chip to ensure a good heat transfer bond to heat pipe contact plate , use gentle care in flipping up the release tab and removing ribbon cable connectors, for snap in connections (Used on the Fan connection) never pull on the wires grasp the snap in plug connector and slightly rock while pulling up to unplug . one should not need to remove the CPU/GPU from the retention mechanism. All computer hardware can be damaged by static electricity so use care to avoid any static charge on your body.. touch a grounded surface before handling the motherboard, or its components.
