It ain't just the Hilox that your donations would save. Our own medical facilities are in constant shortages. Get out & give a unit! The workers in the field giving their own 'straight from the source', wouldn't the white blood cells damage (though not necessarily or directly) off the Hilox patient? It sounded like in the story they'd have to clear the WBC out before infusing it.
If all they needed was blood cells with hemoglobin, why not try livestock? Cattle and horses have a lot more blood to spare than a human, and if they're being used for meat anyway, they could take all of it.
It comes down to the question asked in the story, "What part of the Hemoglobin caused the effect" without an answer to this question non-human sources could have drastic consequences anywhere from leading the treatment to no longer be effective, to causing a mutation in the virus that allowed it to be deadly to Terran originating biology. Plus there is the matter of getting the blood from Livestock and transporting it in time as mentioned Humans have one of the lowest genetic complexities so even more time is spent filtering out all the harmful or useless components, or filtering in the needed components for the treatment.
@@DisIzDaName Well I'm working on a story that deals with interplanetary/dimensional races alongside the standard fare for fantasy so issues like this are things I've had to work on for my own story. And as a writer I do love seeing people bring up questions for alternatives or details that can be hidden or subtle, and I know many authors have a similar appreciation due to how rare it is to see backlash over lore and theory craft from the communities of those stories.
@@truekurayami I don’t think getting blood from live stock would be a huge issue though. If they were able to determine what caused the blood to be so useful and it ended up that one of our livestocks could handle it, then instead of harvesting the animal on earth (or at a station) they could transport living cattle to colony and home worlds. Humans would accompany the cattle and stay with them to make sure the cattle still lived peaceful(ish) lives and the meats could a get transported back to earth for consumption while the rest stays planet side for medical purposes

I'm confused about something. Why wouldn't the human embassy and mercy fleet already have backup supplies of blood for medical purposes? If you're that far from home, you would need to have some kind of backup supply in case of emergencies.
Even blood has expiration. I would hope in a few centuries in the future, medical technology can grow recombinant blood in labs, so we would not need blood donation.
@@wgh4636 I get that blood expires, but you'd think that far in the future they'd have some kind of medical technology capable of preserving it for years.
@@chrisdufresne9359 even if we assume long term storage there's still the logistics of need vs supply and opportunity cost, as storage only provides a buffer and takes up resources, so one must balance what else those resources could be used for, and once said buffer is depleted supply throughput and production, become the dominant choke points

those stories might seem outlandish, if not for the absurd crowd of donors I've always found in the waiting rooms of blood banks every time there's a circular message calling for blood donations Plus, they include free blood tests and complementary breakfast after the donation so, what's not to love about it
I'm used to humans spilling their own blood to save others, it's not usually a donation though. This was a good story.
If I recall 2% of US exports come from selling blood, mostly fueled by those who are poor going in ever 2 weeks or so to make 50 bucks.
"Donate to save an alien race" sounds like a really popular cause, come to think of it. HFY!

Awesome.
A friend of mine's dad had, iirc, a 25-gallon donation pin from the Red Cross.
He'd been donating every two months since a very young age.
I lost track of mine.
Whole and plasma.
First time was for Typhoon relief.
And I didn't stop until I was told no more.
This is one alliance that was paid in blood . Literally!
Having both given, and received blood over the years, I loved this story so much.

they mentioned filtering it out
Its not our blood that produces white blood cells so as the story mentions white blood cells can be filtered out.

They likely did just not in the quantity need the volume of ‘in case of emergency’ and the amount needed to save a planet are on very different scales
